Repeat winners at The Speed Bowl

By Mike Hughes

RED CLOUD, NE (May 19)—Some familiar faces found their way to victory lane at The Speed Bowl in Red Cloud, NE, Friday evening, May 19.

Josh Hudson of Kensington, KS, won his third IMCA Stock Car feature of the season at the 3/8-mile oval. Cory Struckhoff, also of Kensington, led the first 7 laps of the 20-lap race before Hudson was able to make the pass. The lone caution of the race came out on lap 18, bunching up the field for the restart. Hudson was able to hold off his teammate, while Jared Remus finished third, followed by Brett Behrends and Matt Streit. Ron Olson and Geoffrey Jermark won the two heat races.

The IMCA Modified feature saw its share of caution flags in the 20-lap event. The race got off to a rough start when Lonnie Veteto took out a section of guardrail coming out of turn 2 on the opening lap. When the race restarted, Dwight Housh took the lead, only to see the caution on lap 2 for a spinning Joby Hanson. On the ensuing restart, Superior’s Jon Thompson passed Housh to take a lead he would not relinquish enroute to his second win of the year. The caution waved 3 more times in the race, keeping the field close. Hometown driver Lonnie Schriner hounded Thompson late in the race but had to settle for the runner-up spot. Tim Watts, Dusty Blake and Todd Peterson rounded out the top five. Thompson and Hanson were victorious in the two heat races.

Blue Hill’s Jamie Reiman won his first IMCA Hobby Stock feature of the season at Red Cloud in the most exciting race of the night. Chase Carraher led the first three laps of the 15-lap race before Reiman took the top spot. Carraher retook the lead on lap 5 and held on until lap 8 when Reiman took command again. Reiman, Joe McDole, and Carraher ran side-by-side and nose-to-tail the last half of the race, with 5 other drivers within striking distance and swapping positions. Reiman held on for the win, trailed by Jerry Hudson, McDole, Jim Buss and Wade Wagenblast. Heat race winners were Jared Lewis and Carraher.

The Guide Rock duo of Ron & Kent Duffy won their second Cruiser main event of the season. The Duffys led most of the way to the checkers with heat two winners Adam Sidlo & E.J. Kothe in second. Josh & Vic Jacobitz finished third, followed by heat one winners Joe & Jacob Krone.

Racing action returns to The Speed Bowl Friday evening, May 26. It will be ‘Bud Night’ with lots of giveaways and a special appearance by the #8 Budweiser race car. Race time is 8:00 p.m.
