Eagle Raceway 5-27-2006 Results

By Greg Soukup

Despite a reported 2 ½” of rain Saturday morning, “America’s Home Track” ran it’s full schedule of racing. Sunny skies and a strong southerly wind helped dry out the track. And thanks to the diligent and furious work of the Eagle track prep crew who didn’t even get onto the track until nearly 3 P.M., racing started right on time.

Several thousand fans turned out for Fan Appreciation Night, sponsored by Heidelberg’s Sports Bar. And, although the track turned dry-slick thanks to that same southerly wind, there was no shortage of exciting racing. At times in the “No Fear” Modified A feature, the racing was 3-wide.

The Modified A started off by having the front row starters Matt Richards and Tim Pickens relegated to the second row because of a bad start, but they quickly remained in the hunt for the top two positions. Richards spun out with 18 laps to go and Pickens took over the top spot 1 lap later. Sean Burkland then took over the lead with 15 laps left and held the lead spot until Mike Meyer overtook him with just 4 laps to go.

Meyer, having moved up from his starting position on the inside of the 6th row, managed to hold his position at the front of the pack and brought home the victory. He was followed closely by the B9 of Sean Burkland and the 21 of Phil Penney.

Mike said “It is nice to see that the track isn’t the same every week, and changes throughout the night”. “Since it was slick and taking rubber I knew that I had to be patient and watch the cars in front of me to see where I could run and then improve on what they were doing.” “Of course, I couldn’t do any of this without all of my great sponsors and my pit crew”. “I also want to say thanks to Roger Hadan. He’s doing a great job!”

In the Stereo West Auto Toys Tuners, Adrian Dover backed up her A Feature win by coming home in 1st place again this week. In only 4 weeks of racing, she has managed 3 wins!! Pretty good for any racer, but even more amazing since this is her very first year racing.

Adrian had this to say about her experiences behind the wheel: “We have such a fine group of racers here at Eagle. We get along so well. Without that feeling, we wouldn’t have nearly as much fun. And believe me, I am having fun!!!” She also sent out thanks to her sponsors, 3D Auto Transport and Dover’s Auto Sales. Adrian also said “I want to give special thanks to Corey, Jason, Jack and of course my dad Mark”.

Ron Novak of Blair captured the A Feature in the Stereo West Auto Toys Hobby Stocks. When asked about his win, Ron said “I just hung on and won.” “I had the trailing arm break right off the top of the axle with about 6 laps to go. I said to myself ‘Well, I can’t slow down now”.

Ron, a 3 year veteran now in the Hobby Stock ranks, is what many would call an old-time racer. Not because he isn’t a youngster anymore, but because he has no sponsors and no pit crew. Ron related that “If the roof leaks, I just grab the silicone and it doesn’t leak anymore”.

After having run the last 2 years at Columbus he added Eagle to his regular racing this year; all this out of his own pocket, and with his own labor. Way to go Ron, you are an inspiration to a lot of racers out there!!

Jason Danley, in the 82 made a triumphant return to Eagle Raceway by winning the Budweiser 360 Championship Sprint Feature after having started on the inside of the 6th row. Jason has been racing all over the area, but decided to come back to the track that he likes to call home. “It really does you good to go out and race against the type of competition we had to. It humbles you, and then you come back and find out that maybe you aren’t as bad as you thought. It’s great to back here at Eagle.”

Jason said that even though he didn’t race last week, he did come and watch Mike Boston’s 3rd straight A Feature win. “Mike won because he was the smartest. He knew where to go and went there.” “Mike and I have raced against each other for a long time, and he’s always raced me clean.” “As much as I hated to see Mike’s streak come to an end, I’m glad that I was the one to do it”.

When I approached Mike Boston he said “Not this week.” I then said “That’s probably just so you didn’t have to talk to me again, right?” To which he replied “Exactly!!” When told of what Jason had said about him and ending his streak, Mike said “I’m glad it happened really. Now the spotlight is on him and all the pressure. We just didn’t have a very good car tonight and I’m happy for Jason”.

When asked about the track conditions Jason had this to say: “I like a dry-slick track. It makes it easier on an old man”. “We needed a good night after the way we ran last night at Junction Motor Speedway”.

The A Feature for the Sprints was possibly the most exciting of the evening. Jack Dover moved into 1st place after only 3 laps, and then 6 laps later Ryan Roberts moved into 2nd. The two battled fiercely until with 5 laps left Roberts got beside Dover on the front stretch and made contact. That contact caused Dover’s nose wing to be damaged and he was forced to go to the pits after losing part of it on the track. Roberts was moved back to 4th place for having caused the debris. Danley then quickly took the lead and was followed very closely to the checkered flag by Larry Pinegar II in the 13F and Roberts in the 18.

Don’t miss next week’s action when Parker’s Rib Ranch presents “Student Break Out Night” at Eagle. Besides the regular classes, there will be a special School Bus race added to the program.
