I-80 May 20: Hobscheidt, Bulin And Carlson Get First Feature Wins In 2006

By Jim Brennan

(Greenwood, Ne., 5/20/06) – The NASCAR, Dodge Weekly Racing series saw 106
cars and drivers sign in to compete Saturday night. Jason Hobscheidt, Shawn Bulin and
Lynn Carlson picked up their first feature wins of the year.

Hobscheidt started the Crate Late Model feature in the 10th position and watched as
Jon Schwartz grabbed the early lead. Ron Tilley, who started 6th, moved into 2nd on
lap 3 and took the lead from Schwartz on lap 5. Dave Livingston took 2nd on lap 6 followed by Hobscheidt and Jody Krug. Hobscheidt took over the lead on lap 8.
Tilley, Livingston and Krug then locked in a 3 way battle for 2nd with Krug taking
that position on lap 13. Livingston came on strong to take 2nd with 3 laps left.
But Livingston could not overhaul Hobscheidt and had to settle for 2nd. Hobscheidts
first win of the season combined with Billy Leighton finishing 9th, gave Hobscheidt
the points lead after 4 nights of racing. Krug finished 3rd ahead of Dave Doll, Kent
Schimenti and Trevor Millikan.

In the Certified Transmission Pro-am 18 lap feature Terry Cleveland took the early
lead from his pole starting position and held it til lap 12. Shawn Bulin, who started
9th had been steadily moving up in the field and grabbed the lead on that lap. From
that point Bulin pulled away and went on to record his first win of the year. Cleveland
held on to 2nd ahead of Jeff Kupke, Don Mohr and Scotty Hartman.

Ben Romey charge in front from his pole position in the B-Mod 10 lap feature event.
But it would be short lived as Mike Christiansen passed him on the back straight.
Floyd Richards took over the lead on lap 3 with Harry Nixon moving to 3rd.
Christiansen who dropped all the way to 4th made contact with Nixon and spun him
out. On the next yellow flag Christiansen was set back 2 spots. Nixon worked his
way up to challenge Richards at the end. With both drivers running side by side
Richards was able to hold on and record his 2nd win of the season. Jim Fritz finished
3rd ahead of Jim Hendricks Jr. and Lacey Tuttle.

The Smoke Free Nebraska Hornets had a lot of problems on this night; the Pro-Hornets
had a 9 car pileup on the back straight away in the opening lap. Austin Kurtzers car
would end up standing on its nose. When they restarted Rick Havenridge charged to
the early lead. But officials ruled that Havenridge had jumped the start passing one car
before the green flag flew. So after lap 3 a yellow flag flew so official could set back
Havenridge his 3 spots. Perry “The Soul Man” Soule took over the lead on lap 4 and
Went on to record his 2nd feature win of the year.

In the SFN Novice Hornet feature on the opening lap a mixup on the back stretch saw
Amanda Leonardo get sideways and flip 5 times before coming to rest. The Safety Crew
got her stabilized and had to cut the roof off of her car to extract her. She was complaining of some neck pain, so the ambulance took her into the hospital to be
checked over. On the restart Mollee Collins took the early lead only to lose it in turn 1
to Lynn Carlson. Carlson held off a late charge by Nate Christensen to record her first
career win and in turn snapped Christensen win streak at 3. Collins held on for 3rd ahead
of Nathan Brown and Sara Doll.

There was a special Challenge race for teachers and administrators from the Ralston
School district in Hornet cars. The “Teacher Feature” started 8 cars. Mark Fugleberg,
The Ralston High School Tech teacher who helped some of his students build a hornet
car in 2005, won the race over Greg Sheperd, the Ralston High School Principal and
Bob Brown, the president of the Board of Education.
