I-80: Steve Kosiski Wins Fifth Annual Alphabet Soup Race

By Joey Sparano

(GREENWOOD NEB. 05/28/06)- The cars and stars of the WDRL, MLRA, and NCRA made their way to the I-80 Speedway for the fifth annual Alphabet Soup race. Nebraska native Steve Kosiski walked away with $10,000; which included the $5,000 winners purse and a $5,000 Afco Shock bonus.

The 50 lap Alphabet Soup Race presented by Dodge saw pole sitter Kelly Boen jump out to an early lead over outside front row starter Steve Kosiski. Kosiski would show his dominance early by taking the lead from Boen on lap two. Kosiski would hold the lead during the next sixteen laps when the race would see its only cautions. On the lap seventeen restartsecond place would change hands after Brian Harris slid in front of Boen. Boen would take the spot back five laps later. Meanwhile, consolation winner and Georgia resident Clint Smith would work his way up to the third position by lap 31. Kosiski would maintain the lead for the rest of the way while Boen and Smith battled it out for second. On the final lap Smith and Boen would make contact in turn one. Boen would keep control and go on to take second to Kosiski. Smith finished third, John Hampel was fourth, and the 2005 WDRL Champion Denny Eckrich finished fifth.

The Home Pride Modifieds found J.C. Wyman in the early lead on lap one in the eighteen lap feature. Wyman would hold it until lap six when Grant Junghans took control in his #2x machine. The Kansas driver would race like a veteran on his first night at the Speedway by leading the rest of the race and taking the checkered flag. Dan Mueller would start and finish second . Jesse Dennis would slide infront of J.C. Wyman for third, while Wyman ended up fourth, Brian Foote finished fifth.

Dave Doll would take his #97d to the front of the field on lap one of the 20 lap Grand National feature. Dolls lead would not last long, as on lap five the #1 of Jason Hobscheidt took the point. Hobscheidt's luck would end when on lap eight his hood would come loose. The yellow would wave as Hobscheidt went to the pits The new leader would be Doll again, but on lap twelve Billy Leighton Jr. would grab the lead. Leighton would keep the lead and go on to win. Doll, Mike Wallace, Ron Tex Jr., and Dave Livingston rounded out the top five.
