Egge wins late model special at Red Cloud

By Mike Hughes

RED CLOUD, NE (May 12)—After two consecutive rainouts at The Speed Bowl in Red Cloud, racing action returned Friday evening, May 12, with a special appearance by the late models.

Bo Egge of Kearney took the lead from Milford’s Eddie Moore on lap 8 of the 20-lap Late Model feature and led the remaining distance to the checkers. Heat one winner Billy Murphy stayed within striking distance of Egge but never did mount a serious challenge. Rusty Miller finished third, followed by Vince Wagoner and Mike Hetrek. Egge won the other heat race.

Jordan Grabouski of Beatrice led wire-to-wire in the caution plagued 20-lap IMCA Modified feature. Jon Thompson of Superior challenged Grabouski several times and even took the lead on lap 7, only to have the caution come out, giving the lead back to Grabouski. Thompson and Lonnie Schriner hounded Grabouski throughout the race, but the two made contact coming out of turn 2 on lap 17, resulting in a caution after Schriner suffered a flat and came to a stop. Schriner had to go to the back of the line on the restart because of having to pit, and race officials also put Thompson to the back for the contact. Grabouski led the remaining distance for the win, followed by Todd Peterson, Tim Watts, Brandon Blochlinger and Dusty Blake. Heat race winners were Grabouski, Craig Corman, Thompson and Blake.

Guide Rock’s Chad Wulf had a big lead in the 20-lap IMCA Stock Car feature, but had to go to the pits on lap 8, giving the lead to Jason McCartney. Josh Hudson of Kensington, KS, Matt Streit and Brett Behrends battled for the runner-up spot until Hudson got by McCartney on lap 17 and held on to score his second win of the season at the 3/8-mile oval. Behrends, Streit, McCartney and Lance Borgman rounded out the top five. Cory Struckhoff and Geoffrey Jermark won the two heat races.

Rocky Zimmerman of Ayr led 14 of the 15 laps in the IMCA Hobby Stock feature, but was passed by Jim Buss of Hastings in the final turn on the final lap. Buss beat Zimmerman to the checkers by less than half a car-length for his second win at Red Cloud this season. Hometown drivers Jared Lewis, Joe McDole and Delbert Selvage completed the top five. Following the race, Buss had his motor claimed by Zach Reicks. McDole and Chase Carraher were victorious in the two heat races.

The Hastings duo of Adam Sidlo & E.J. Kothe had a clean sweep in the Cruiser division as they won the heat race, then held off Joe & Jacob Krone to win the main event. Josh & Vic Jacobitz finished third.

Racing action returns to The Speed Bowl Friday evening, May 19. Race time is 8:00 p.m.
