JMS Joins NASCAR

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series serves as the foundation of NASCAR – the grassroots racing across the United States and Canada. That ‘Home Track’ effort continues to grow stronger with the addition of three tracks to the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series beginning in 2008: Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, Wisc., Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Neb., and Tri-County Motor Speedway in Hudson, N.C.

“We are very pleased to welcome three outstanding tracks to the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series,” said George Silbermann, managing director of racing perations. “These tracks bring a level of competition and excitement to the fans that have become synonymous with NASCAR’s short-track racing.”

In becoming part of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, the tracks’ NASCAR-licensed members will become eligible to compete for state and national championships in addition to their track titles.

Following is a look at Junction Motor Speedway located at McCool Junction, Ne. one of the newest NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Home Tracks.

NASCAR Grassroots Racing Grows With More ‘Home Tracks’

• Delmar Friesen’s vision was a dirt race track in the corn fields of Nebraska. The result was Junction Motor Speedway, a 3/8-mile dirt track five miles south of York, Neb., off I-80 and nearly a straight shot west of the state capital in Lincoln.

“It’s like the guy who put the baseball field in Iowa: Have a field; come play,” Friesen said. “It’s a similar situation.”

Junction Motor Speedway has been open for four years and hosts six classes, led by its Late Model division, on Saturday nights beginning April 19. The six-percent banking on the straightaway and 12 percent in the corners provides plenty of high-speed racing excitement. The addition of Junction Motor Speedway gives NASCAR drivers in Nebraska another venue to chase points in pursuit of state and national honors.

“Being part of NASCR is going to give our facility more recognition,” said track manager Barb Nunnenkamp. “And the drivers are really going to enjoy what it brings them.”

The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series is NASCAR’s national championship program for short-track racing. Connecticut-based Whelen Engineering, a leading manufacturer of automotive, aviation, industrial and emergency vehicle lighting is the series sponsor. More than 10,000 drivers compete at NASCAR-sanctioned short tracks throughout the U.S. and Canada.

NASCAR launched a multi-faceted ‘Home Track’ campaign, with the help of NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers Greg Biffle, Carl Edwards and Elliott Sadler, at the 2007 Daytona 500 to help bring attention to the short track programs that make up the foundation of NASCAR.

The campaign continues in 2008 with Biffle, Edwards and Clint Bowyer being joined by short-track stars such as Joe Kosiski, Marc Davis, Woody Pitkat, Chrissy Wallace, Peyton Sellers and Phillip Morris. In addition, fans can follow their favorite local drivers through www.NASCARHomeTracks.com.

The short-track racing program in NASCAR was founded in 1982. Since its inception, the series has been a successful starting point for the careers of many top drivers. NASCAR stars Biffle, Bowyer, Jeff Burton, Kurt and Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Edwards, Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, Travis Kvapil, Bobby Labonte, Jamie McMurray, Scott Riggs, Sadler and Brian Vickers all began their careers in this series.

Midwest Speedway videos

Ryan Tunks, creator of the Midwest Speedway Preservation Society website posted some links to videos from the defunct Midwest Speedway on Dirtdrivers.com. For those unfamiliar, Midwest Speedway sat at the corner of 27th and Superior streets in Lincoln, NE, now home to a Wal-Mart.

While the track hosted everything from supermodifieds to late models, arguably the speedway's biggest claim is being the birthplace of the 360 Sprint class.

For some of us they're great memories, for the newbies - a way to see the 360 Sprint class in its infancy and to watch the IMCA modifieds begin to branch out to other tracks.

"Hang with Herman" at select USMTS events

Kenny Wallace fans can “Hang with Herman” at select O’Reilly USMTS National Tour events; Proceeds to benefit Victory Junction Gang Camp

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa — RLD Marketing and Night of Victory are happy to announce that NASCAR driver Kenny Wallace will be participating in five special evenings of “Hang with Herman” while he travels with the O’Reilly USMTS National Tour.

“Hang with Herman” is a special “meet and greet” opportunity at the following dates and tracks on the O’Reilly USMTS National Tour:

Wednesday, June 18 … Park Jefferson Speedway, Jefferson, S.D.
Wednesday, June 25 … Huset’s Speedway, Brandon, S.D.
Wednesday, July 23 … Clay County Speedway, Spencer, Iowa
Tuesday, July 29 … Cresco Speedway, Cresco, Iowa
Wednesday, July 30 … Southern Iowa Speedway, Oskaloosa, Iowa

The evening is an opportunity to meet with NASCAR fan favorite Kenny Wallace, grab an autograph, get a photo taken, ask Kenny some questions, learn about Night of Victory and talk about racing!

“I am very excited about partnering with Night of Victory,” said Wallace, winner of three Most Popular Driver Awards. “I’ve had the opportunity to work with Night of Victory before and they really put together exciting events that benefit a very deserving cause. I hope the fans get excited about coming out to the dirt track early to have some fun hanging out with us before the races.”

The Night of Victory will be held on Sept. 17 at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., to benefit the Victory Junction Gang Camp. A prelude to the 10th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree, the event will be a day-long opportunity to reach fans in the Midwest. Throughout the day, the general public will be able to partake in the festivities at the track: they can meet NASCAR team members, see show cars, visit souvenir trailers, purchase merchandise and much more!

The evening will culminate with an autograph session with the NASCAR drivers and personalities, a “match race” with the NASCAR drivers, a catered meal and an auction with over 150 items of racing memorabilia to benefit the Victory Junction Gang Camp.

NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers will be on hand for autographs and photo opportunities.

“While we are expecting 500-700 people to be in attendance for the festivities, that number could easily be in the thousands for the race-fest portion of the day,” said Rachel Dean of RLD Marketing. “We’re excited to have Kenny promoting Night of Victory throughout the summer at the “Hang with Herman” events, and we’re also excited about having our logo on his modified.

“Kenny is a wonderful spokesperson and we’re more than thrilled having him promote our fundraiser for the Victory Junction Gang Camp.”

“Hang with Herman” tickets are $30 per person. Each ticket includes your ticket to the “meet and greet” with Kenny Wallace, your ticket to that evening’s O’Reilly USMTS National Tour race, a great meal and the opportunity to win some great prizes!

To order tickets, please contact Rachel Dean at 712-339-9064 or email her at racheltwait@mchsi.com. Visit www.nightofvictory.com for more information on the “Hang with Herman” and Night of Victory events.

2008 Special Events Schedule

I've compiled a list of some of the big events in a roughly 4-hour radius of Lincoln, NE. I noted the feature class (AKA, the class that's the reason you're paying more money to get in). I didn't include "sub specials," that is, events where there's no real bonus or outside sanction such as "Mid-Season Championships," "Fan Appreciation nights," etc.

For convenience, I've attached the schedule as an Adobe Acrobat PDF file.

If you see any additions or changes, let me know.

New era for Nebraska sprint pilot Alley

From www.billyalley.com

A new era has begun for Billy Alley and Shane Sterling, as they have teamed up to
become SA Racing. Billy is very excited to announce that Delta Oil will be the primary
sponsor for the upcoming 2008 racing season. “Proud would be the best word to
describe the last couple of weeks. I am very excited and proud to be apart of what is
going on in Lincoln, Nebraska. A lot of hard work has already been set forth in reuniting
the 22,” Billy comments.

“Delta Oil is very excited to partake in the continued success of Billy’s phenomenal
racing career. This commitment solidifies our relationship and we feel will elevate both
of our companies to new standards of excellence,” says Alex Lontayo, Delta Oil
spokesman. “Delta Oil is a primarily European based company, but working towards a
2008 product launch here in the United States,” exclaimed Shane Sterling. “Delta Oil
has very big plans for its United States debut and we’re excited that they will be a part of
Billy’s success and rise to the top of the motor sports world.”

“Billy is an exceptional young man with talent that is unheard of in the sport of racing.
What he has accomplished in his short career is nothing short of amazing. With the
success of Delta Oil overseas, they have come to the United States and chose Billy to
represent their company. With this decision, SA Racing has the full backing of Delta
Oil,” comments Shane Sterling.

SA Racing is also happy to announce the addition of several other prominent sponsors.
Aeroquip has come aboard to be apart of this exciting ride. “Their fittings are some of
the best and lightest in the industry,” says Billy. In addition, JEI Chassis and Wesmar
Racing Engines.

Several other sponsors have joined forces to help the number 22, such as Craig Bolz,
Buckles Brothers, Buss Excavating, Schmit Automotive and McClain Motorsports.
“Without the help of these local business owners, none of this would have happened,”
states Billy.

D’Agostino Racing, out of Ft. Lauderdale, rounds out the list of companies. “It’s hard
not to get involved with a race team that has such a positive history. It would be a poor
decision not to sponsor them.” says owner Derek D’Agostino.

“Racing is something that is universal. We are just proud to represent a global company
that has had success in other racing ventures. With the addition of SA Racing to their
sponsorships, Delta Oil will continue to thrive,” states Shane.

Four IMCA divisions to run Friday nights at Thayer County

From IMCA:

DESHLER, Neb. (Feb. 12) – Weekly racing returns to Thayer County
Speedway this season, with first-year promoter Tommy Denton in charge
of Friday night race programs.

Ten point races are scheduled for IMCA-sanctioned Modifieds, Hobby
Stocks and Sport Compacts starting May 2, while sanctioned Stock Cars
will make five appearances at the 3/8 mile clay venue. Season
championship night is scheduled for Aug. 22.

Deshler last hosted the Modifieds, Stocks and Hobbies as a Sunday
night track in 2006. Two enduro races were held there last year.

"This is a very nice facility. The track is in good shape so we don't
need to do any major work to get it ready for opening night," said
Denton, already busy meeting with sponsors and spreading the word to
drivers on the area trade show circuit. "We want to be able to put on
good programs and get people home at a decent time."

A former factory stock competitor, Denton worked for Allen Langdale
at Beatrice Speedway and Thayer County and credits IMCA's SuperFlow
Central Region director with helping him learn the promotional ropes.

"IMCA has rules that everyone knows and that makes it easier for
drivers and track officials," he said. "Sanctioning the Modifieds was
a no-brainer. You've got to have them because they're so popular.
There are already a lot of Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts in the
area, and it sounds like we've got guys from around Beatrice and
Minneapolis, Kan., planning to race Stock Cars here."

Modified points earned at Thayer County apply in the SuperFlow
Central Region. Both Stock Car and Hobby Stock points figure in Jet
Racing Northern Region standings for the respective divisions.

The opening night show is also NAPA Night at the Races for the
Hobbies, with another $250 added to the purse for that class.

Note: A tentative version had been posted earlier. Here's the official
version.

By Lonnie Wheatley TULSA, Okla. (February 6, 2008) - Set for its fourth year
of competition, the American Sprint Car Series Midwest Region has released
its 2008 schedule.

The ASCS Midwest Region is currently slated for eleven nights of racing
action in 2008 at eight different tracks throughout Nebraska, Kansas,
Missouri and Iowa.

For the third year in a row, the series opens the season with a two-night
stand versus the ASCS Northern Plains Region at Nebraska Raceway Park's I-80
Speedway in Greenwood, NE, on April 14-15.

After a pair of stops at Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, NE, on
May 23 and June 27, the ASCS Midwest Regional troops take on the O'Reilly
ASCoT National forces at Kansas City's Lakeside Speedway on July 4.

A week later, the series takes to the lightning-fast high banks of U.S. 36
Raceway in Cameron, MO.

Another weekend pitted against the ASCS Northern Plains Region is next on
the docket, with the two Regions squaring off at Denison, Iowa's Crawford
County Speedway on July 18 and then Nebraska's Eagle Raceway on July 19.

After sending its top competitors to the Brodix Tournament of Champions in
August, the ASCS Midwest Region puts the wraps on the 2008 season with a
three-race set on September 5-7, that includes Butler County Motorplex
(Rising City, NE), a first-time stop at Minneapolis (KS) Raceway and Eagle
Raceway's Nebraska Cup, where the series champion will be crowned.

Several other events are being negotiated and may be added to the ASCS
Midwest Region schedule in the coming weeks.

2008 Wish List part 2

I left the last wish list with a tirade about tracks not getting a good website going. Let's be a little more positive for the next.

1. Attend the Turkey Chase kart race this year. This seems to be just a fun way to get in an off-season fix for the racing blues.

2. See a competitive ASCS race at Junction Motor Speedway. I'm not knocking the track, I'm knocking the way the format is. I've seen passing at the big 3/8 mile. But what you have is essentially, the fast guy starts up front. While I understand the reward based passing point system, that's all fine and good until A feature time, which usually falls flat. Some time ago I asked if a good ASCS race could be held at a track larger than a third-mile. I-80's Wingless 410/ASCS/Mod show showed it could happen as, well every guy up front was fast! But that didn't take away from one of the better A features I watched all year with Jack Dover holding off some big guns to take the win.

3. Hit some other shows on Saturday besides Eagle! The sad thing is I have an emotional connection to the place, have a lot of good friends there and shooting there has been a desire of mine for a LONG time. I keep saying that, but this time I need to deliver.

4. That people who really care about their track's cause take the time to send some emails. I tire of seeing people saying that the TV, newspaper, etc. doesn't cover their show. Well, let me tell you this, newspaper staff is shrinking and their ability to find little tidbits is diminishing. Help them out! Before you think I'm going on another rant again, well no. Not yet. But I'll offer the words of P.T. Barnum: you can't sell it if they don't know about it.

5. Make it out to Knoxville a few times this year, maybe even for the Nationals. I haven't been there in 11 years. Really. If I go to the Nationals this year though - it will probably be from the Saturday before thru Thursday. I'll leave the Friday and Saturday parades for the TV.

I'm sure there are other things but this is good for now.

USMTS Schedule update & Eagle date moved to Belleville

WEBSTER CITY, Iowa - There's a few less holes in the 2008 calendar now as
officials announced Tuesday the addition of four more races to the O'Reilly
USMTS National Tour to fill in the dates that were listed as to-be-announced
(TBA) venues, and to move one event from one track to another.

New to this year's slate are two historic Hawkeye State tracks that will
host the mud-slinging Modified masters for the first time in the 10-year
history of the United States Modified Touring Series.

On Thursday, July 24, the Independence Motor Speedway will host the O'Reilly
USMTS National Tour for the first time with new promoter Brian Lillie
securing the show for the 3/8-mile oval located at the Buchanan County
Fairgrounds in Independence, Iowa.

Then, on Saturday, Sept. 13, the Marshalltown (Iowa) Speedway will be the
site of a sure-to-thrill action-packed contest as the rugged road warriors
of the O'Reilly USMTS National Tour make their first-ever stop at the
popular high-banked 1/4-mile oval. In addition to headlining the second
night of "Havoc on the Highbanks" at the Central Iowa Fairgrounds, the race
will also be the next-to-last stop in the Casey's General Stores Hunt for
the O'Reilly USMTS National Championship.

Speaking of high banks, the O'Reilly USMTS National Tour will be returning
to the legendary Belleville (Kan.) High Banks for the first time in more
than six years on Tuesday, Aug. 12, for a special event that will feature
Kenny Wallace and other to-be-announced NASCAR stars taking on The World's
Fastest Half-Mile Dirt Track. The race will also serve as a crucial stop in
the Casey's General Stores Hunt for the O'Reilly USMTS National
Championship.

The date was originally set for the Eagle (Neb.) Raceway, but USMTS promoter
Todd Staley decided to move venues when it was discovered that nearby I-80
Speedway (11 miles away) had already scheduled a special sprint car race for
that date.

Garnering a second date on the 2008 slate, the Thunderhill Speedway in
Mayetta, Kan., takes the Thursday, June 19, slot which will be the third
stop in a five-day, five-State swing. The O'Reilly USMTS National Tour will
also be at the high-banked 4/10-mile oval on Sunday, March 16, for the 6th
Annual Kansas Spring.

For the fifth straight year, the O'Reilly USMTS National Tour campaign will
kick off with a doubleheader at the state-of-the-art Junction Motor Speedway
in McCool Junction, Neb. The 5th Annual Nebraska Spring Thaw is slated for
Friday and Saturday, March 7-8, 2008. Friday's event will pay $2,000 to win
while the victor in Saturday's main event will pocket $3,000. More than 70
entries are once again expected for the annual lidlifter at the 3/8-mile
high-banked clay oval.

The USMTS is celebrating its 10th Anniversary Season in 2008 with many
special promotions to show thanks to the fans, drivers, team members,
families and sponsors who have helped make the USMTS the premier dirt
modified series in the nation. More announcements about the 2008 season will
be forthcoming over the next few weeks.

Update: there were questions about when and if the Eagle Date would be rescheduled. It will be up to the USMTS. Eagle Raceway Promoter Roger Hadan, concerned with turnout in 2007 offered up the track, but only if USMTS leased the facility for the night.

Lincoln's Droud Teams with Sparks for Run at ASCoT Crown

by Lonnie Wheatley

TULSA, Okla. (February 8, 2008) – The battle for the 2008 O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National championship just got tougher, as it has been announced that Lincoln, Nebraska's Don Droud, Jr., will team with Olive Branch, MS, car owner Bobby Sparks for the full campaign.

Droud throws his hat into a ring that already includes the likes of four-time and reigning series champion Gary Wright along with other past ASCS National champions including Travis Rilat, Zach Chappell, Wayne Johnson and Garry Lee Maier in addition to two-time series runner-up Jason Johnson.

"I'm excited about it, I look forward to stepping up my program and racing on a nightly basis with guys like Gary Wright, Jason Johnson and Garry Lee Maier," Droud explained. "I've always said that the ASCS National Tour is probably tougher than the World of Outlaws just because of the format and the guys that you have to run with every night. It's going to be tough, but I'm looking forward to it."

Droud opened up the season with the O'Reilly ASCoT National series last weekend aboard Bobby Sparks' Wells-powered No. 91 Hoosier-shod Eagle, making the feature cut on all three nights and escaping the triple tied for eighth in early-season points.

But no plans had been established beyond that season-opening event atop Tampa's 1/3-mile clay oval.

"I already had a deal worked out to drive for the Ochs brothers out of Jetmore," Droud explains of the team that he paired with to rank second in 2007 NCRA Sprint Car points. "Bobby and I had talked about the rest of the season a little bit, but I wanted to make sure he still wanted to after Florida 'cause the last time I was down there I was horrible."

"Everything was good last weekend though, so I spent at least two hours on the phone Sunday with the Ochs brothers and we were able to work things out, I'll be driving the full ASCS National Tour with Bobby Sparks and then I'll run their car the rest of the time."

The end result is a full slate for Droud in 2008 with approximately 45 nights of ASCS National action supplemented by another 25 or so nights with the Ochs team.

While pursuing the series $50,000 championship, Droud is also eligible for Brodix Rookie of the Year honors along with fellow rookie contenders Eric Baldaccini, Kathryne Minter and Gary Taylor.

Displaying his versatility by enjoying success in both winged and wingless Sprint Cars as well as Midgets in recent years, Droud teams with one of the leading car owners in the business.

Sparks has fielded winning Sprint Cars for over 30 years, spending the past five and a half years with Bixby, OK, shoe Darren Stewart at the helm. "Darren was like a son to me, but he wasn't able to commit to the full Tour this year so we had to make the change," Sparks commented.

"I've had a lot of people call and ask about the ride," Sparks explains. "Don and I get along real good and I've known him for a long time. You've got to be comfortable with the person you're going to spend all this time going up and down the road with, it's almost like a marriage."

This won't be the first time for Sparks and Droud to team up however, as Droud spent several races aboard the familiar No. 91 car several years ago.

"You've got to have someone that's hungry, someone that wants to win races. Don is that guy, he's at that point in his career right now and we're looking forward to a big year," Sparks concludes.

With Dennis Wells providing the powerplants for the Sparks Racing Team in 2008, the Droud-Sparks combo will next hit the track when the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour Nationals series takes to the Devil's Bowl Speedway ½-mile clay oval in Mesquite, TX, for the 35th Annual Spring Nationals on March 14-15.
