Eagle Raceway 5-20-2006 Results

By Greg Soukup

A cloudy, drizzly morning at Eagle Raceway gave way to a sunny, warm afternoon. Eventually, that gave way to a wonderful, cool evening of racing at “America’s Home Track”.

All told, the crowd saw 11 heats, 2 B Features and 4 A Features on the high-banked 1/3 mile. Thankfully, there were no major accidents during the show.

The A Feature for the Stereo West Auto Toys Tuners was won by the 01 car of Adrian Dover.

Taking the checkered flag first in the IMCA No Fear Modifieds was Stacey Wilhelm in the 3W.

The victor of the Stereo West Auto Toys Hobby Stocks was #42, Rob Brown. After the races, I spoke with Rob and asked him if he had anything he would like to pass along to the fans. Rob replied: “It’s always great to win a feature, especially at a track like Eagle. I do want to say that I won tonight as a birthday present for my girlfriend Jean.”“It’s easy to be fast when you have a good pit crew like mine, and great sponsors like I have.”“I want to thank Brown Glass Company, L G S of Lincoln, Dean and Don Johnson, Spyder Race Cars and a big thanks to Jim & Todd”.

The Budweiser Championship 360 Sprint feature was thrilling to say the least, although there were several cautions in the early going. Don Droud Jr. broke from his outside pole position to lead the first 17 laps, despite a furious challenge from young Ryan Roberts, he gave Droud all that he could handle. After having gotten over the cushion in turns 3 & 4 on the 12th lap, Ryan came very close to tipping over; but recovered to again catch Droud and attempt to overtake him. Unfortunately, after what can only be described as a banzai move in turns 1 & 2 on the 17th lap, Roberts spun out and had to retire in 18th position. Eventual sprint winner Mike Boston had a lot of praise for Ryan, but did say that “he just needs to learn patience. In fact, Ryan was “the”subject of many conversations in the pits afterwards.

Boston moved into first place on lap 18. 2 laps later, Gene Acklund flipped in the 3rd turn. Mike had to hold off the 19J of Jay Jordan and Larry Pinegar II who finished 3rd after moving up from 15th starting position. Also making a huge rush to the front was Jeff Griffis who advanced from his 20th starting spot to finish 7th.

When I spoke to Mike after the races, I accused him of lying to me. Mike had to be reminded that when he came into the pits that afternoon I had told him that I had asked Darrel Boston if the team was going to let someone else win that night, to which he replied “Heck No!!!”. So, I asked Mike the same question, and he told me “of course, it’s boring if the same guy wins every week”.

Mike then told me: “Honestly, I’d rather be lucky than good. Sometimes, like tonight, things just fall your way. As I said last week, it’s unbelievable to win 1 feature here at Eagle, let alone 3 in a row.”
