Three first time winners at Eagle Raceway

By Jason Orth

Eagle, Neb., (July 29, 2006) – Jay Russell notched his first ever Budweiser Championship Sprint victory at Eagle Raceway in his first full time campaign at the 1/3-mile oval. Jim Musel picked up his first win in the Stereo West Auto Toys Hobby Stocks while Neil Pella also won for the first time in the Tuner division. Chris Alcorn dominated the last half of the 20-lap Sobe NoFear IMCA Modified A feature Saturday night to win his second A feature in a row and his fourth in six races. Coupled with two second place runs in that six-race span, he took over the point lead from six-time Modified champ Mike Meyer.

It was a rough night for some drivers. Dean Chadd flipped hard down the front stretch wall in his sprint heat, taking out the flagstand. Fortunately, no one was hurt and the flagstand was brought back quickly. Harm Rogman crashed hard into turn one on the opening lap of the Tuner A feature, while Adrian Dover’s run for the first Tuner championship at Eagle suffered a setback as she was involved in an opening-lap crash ending her night.

Once racing got underway Neil Pella took the early lead in the 10-lap feature. Justin Busboom gave chase along with Kevin Kuker. Busboom took control of second coming out of turn two on the final lap and tried to take the win, but Pella held off the challenge for the victory.

Jim Musel took the lead early on the opening lap of the Hobby Stock A feature. With six laps remaining Mike Hansen and Don Hall Jr. made it a three-way battle for the lead. On the final lap Hansen tried to dive underneath Musel for the win but it wasn’t enough as he trailed by just a car length at the flag. Hall finished third with Rich Small coming home fourth.

Dusty Anderson and Lucas Robinson battled throughout the early stages of the 20-lap Modified feature, with Robinson taking the lead on lap 12. Meanwhile, Chris Alcorn charged from the eighth row to fourth place by that time and slipped underneath the top three to take the lead with seven laps remaining. From there, Alcorn hugged the bottom groove and left the field behind, winning by a straightaway over Robinson. Doug Deterding came home third ahead of Rik Gropp and Anderson.

Brad Krutz dominated most of the first half of the 25-lap Sprint A feature on a track that now was race-worn and dry. But Jay Russell began to challenge, running the still fast high groove and closed in on Krutz with eleven laps down. He took the lead coming out of turn four and just before Mark Pace spun in turn three to bring out the yellow flag.

Adam Gullion began to challenge for the win with bold moves, and ran down Russell as the field hit lapped traffic with two laps to go. Gullion tried to make the move low in turn one on the final lap, but was held up by the lapped car of Rob Lipker. The loss of momentum allowed Russell enough breathing room to take his first ever win at Eagle. Gullion finished second, with point leader Mike Boston strengthening his advantage with a third place finish.

Bernie Bryan won an old timer’s race against names from Eagle Raceway’s past. Driving the feature-winning tuner of Neil Pella he held off a last-lap dash to the finish from Ed Bowes to win the race. JJ Riggins finished third.
