Familiar faces in Red Cloud’s victory lane

By Mike Hughes

RED CLOUD, NE (July 14)—Victory lane saw all familiar faces at The Speed Bowl in Red Cloud, NE, Friday evening, July 14.

Superior’s Jon Thompson won his sixth IMCA Modified feature of the year. Thompson got a good jump at the drop of the green and led all 20 laps enroute to the checkers. A couple of early caution flags kept the field bunched the first half of the race but Thompson pulled away for an easy win. Brian Calhoon finished second, followed by Brandon Blochlinger, heat two winner Dwight Housh and Tim Watts. Lonnie Schriner won the other heat race.

Jim ‘The Bussman’ Buss of Hastings won his sixth IMCA Hobby Stock feature of the season but had to work much harder for his. After problems in his heat race sent him to the pits, Buss had to start scratch in the 15-car, 15 lap race. T.C. McCain of Downs, KS, led the first 8 laps before Jeromy Wagner took the top spot with Buss in second. Buss then took command on lap 10 and led the remaining distance to the checkers. Wagner held to second, with Joe McDole, Mike Shriver and Jared Lewis rounding out the top five. Heat race winners were Rocky Zimmerman and Chase Carraher.

Brett Behrends of Webber, KS, won his second IMCA Stock Car feature in a row. Chad Wulf led the first five laps before the red flag waved on lap 6 when heat 2 winner Troy Attwood rolled coming out of turn 2. Attwood was not hurt but was finished for the night. Wulf led the next four laps before Behrends finally made his way to the front on lap 10. Lance Borgman chased Behrends the remainder of the 18-lap event but had to settle for the runner-up spot. Josh Hudson finished third, followed by Cory Struckhoff and Wulf. Geoff Jermark was victorious in the other heat race.

Joe & Pat Hersh of Inavale inherited the lead on lap 2 of the 10-lap Cruiser feature and that was all they needed to make their way to The Speed Bowl’s winner’s circle for the second time this season. Heat one winners David Theer & Troy Himmelberg led the opening lap but developed a flat tire while under caution on lap 2 and had to pit. The Hershes led the field back to green and drove off for the win. Jeremy Teselle & John Lamb placed second, followed by John Annon & Josh Wonderly. Heat two winners were Doug & Jason Monty.

Racing returns to The Speed Bowl Friday evening, July 21, as the regular four divisions return to action. There will also be a hot dog eating contest during intermission. Racing starts at 8:00 p.m.
