Alcorn Sweeps Eagle Double Features

By Jason Orth

Eagle, Neb. (July 1, 2006) – Chris Alcorn swept both A features in the Sobe No Fear IMCA Modified division Saturday night, while Budweiser Championship Sprint driver Chad Humston picked up his first win for owner Gary Swenson in the night’s final race, after Mike Boston snatched the victory away from him in the first A feature. Rich Small and Ron Novak each picked up their second Stereo West Auto Toys Hobby Stock wins, while Rich White and Kevin Kuker each won for the first time in the Stereo West Auto Toys Tuner division.

After a furious run of makeup features, the regular Saturday night action got underway just before 9 PM. The Tuner A feature was first up as Jack Prall, Jr took the early lead in the 10-lap contest. After Amanda Rhiley stopped in turn four, bringing out the yellow flag with six laps to go, Kevin Kuker grabbed the lead from Prall and never looked back. Former Eagle Raceway Late Model champion Mike Kelley made an appearance and took second place, with Prall coming home third. Newcomer Jimmy King and point leader Adrian Dover rounded out the top five.

The Hobby Stock A saw Jeff Kros take the early lead until he got sideways coming out of turn four and spun through the infield. When the dust settled, Casey Moyer took the top spot with Ron Novak and Rick Bradley giving chase. Novak took the lead on lap eight, but Moyer continued to challenge. Novak held off Moyer for the win, with Justin Wulf taking third, Bradley fourth, and Mike Hansen fifth.

Jesse Robinson inherited the Modified A feature lead after point man Steve Devitt spun and stopped in turn four in the early laps. A four-wide battle for second turned into a five-way fight for the lead as Chris Alcorn slipped underneath the crowd to take the lead with seven laps down. After a yellow flag for debris off Devitt’s machine with 11 laps remaining, Alcorn held the lead with Larry Goertz in second and a hard-charging Mike Meyer in third. Though Meyer passed Goertz with seven laps remaining, Alcorn put distance between him and the rest of the field and won by nearly a straightaway over Meyer and Goertz. Doug Deterding and Sean Burklund followed.

The Sprint A feature had two messy starts: the first when Tadd Holliman collected Stu Snyder in turn four, the second when Adam Gullion spun in front of the pack resulting in an eight car pileup. The red flag flew as Doug Lovegrove and Jeff Lowery rolled their sprinters. Officials opted to start the field single file, and B feature runners Mark Pace and Don Droud Jr. benefited from the other’s misfortune, moving up several positions on the restart lineup.

Pace made the most of his fortune as he ran down Rob Lipker for second with five laps down and race leader Chad Humston on the following lap. The track, beaten by heat, wind and 19 races began to go from dry to laying down rubber. As the track went away, Pace pulled out, extending his lead to a straightaway’s length. With 11 laps left, Pace smacked the turn four wall, breaking his suspension and allowing Humston to close in. The rubber on the track added traction and instant speed and Humston quickly reeled in Pace and passed him in turn two on the following lap. Within a few circuits, Humston put a half lap between his car and second place and would never look back. Pace, a rookie this season finished second, with Don Droud Jr. coming home third. Jeff Griffis finished fourth, Lipker came home fifth.

Next Saturday it’s Colby Ridge Fan Appreciation night featuring a full show, plus the rescheduled Subway Gauntlet Bus Race. Admission is just $5 for adults.
