Metz, Behrends get first wins of season at Red Cloud

By Mike Hughes

RED CLOUD, NE (July 7)—Greg Metz of Washington, KS, and Brett Behrends of Webber, KS, finally earned their way to victory lane for the first time this season at The Speed Bowl in Red Cloud, NE, Friday evening, July 7.

After finishing last in the 17-car field a week ago, Metz redeemed himself as he led all 20 laps of the caution free IMCA Modified feature. Metz pulled away from Dwight Housh for an easy win. Jon Thompson finished a distant third with Tim Watts and Lonnie Schriner close behind. Metz and Lonnie Veteto were victorious in the two heat races.

The IMCA Stock Car feature also had a first time winner in Behrends. Hometown driver Ron Olson led the first 10 laps of the 18-lap event before Behrends made the winning pass. Josh Hudson finished a close second, followed by Matt Streit, heat two winner Cory Struckhoff, and Jason McCartney. Heat one winner Geoff Jermark finished sixth.

‘The Bussman’ Jim Buss of Hastings had an impressive drive to win his fifth IMCA Hobby Stock feature of the season at ‘The Bowl.’ Unable to run his heat race due to motor problems, Buss lined up scratch in the 15-lap feature. But Buss worked his way up thru the field and passed leader Joe McDole on lap 6 and never looked back on the way to the checkers. McDole, heat two winner Wade Wagenblast, Delbert Selvage and Rocky Zimmerman rounded out the top five. Jared Lewis won the other heat race. The feature race was red flagged twice. The first time on lap 1 when Jamie Reiman rolled over on his top in turn 1. On the following lap, Brandon Naasz rolled his car hard in turn 2 when he made contact with the outside fence. Both drivers were unharmed.

Guide Rock duo Ron & Kent Duffy won their fourth Cruiser feature of the season and second in a row as they took the lead with 2 laps to go in the 10-lap race. Terry Gradig & Gary Rannebeck finished second, followed by point leaders Adam Sidlo & E.J. Kothe. Heat race winners included T.J. Jameson & Matthew Niemeyer and David Theer & Troy Himmelberg.

The Good Ol’ Time Racing Association (GOTRA) made a special appearance. Howard Sheets of Fremont led the first 7 laps of the 12-lap feature before Rich Anderson of Columbus took the lead and pulled away to the checkers. Ken Ganskow finished second, followed by Sheets. Heat race winners were Dennis Proskocil and Anderson, while Sheets earned the hardware in the trophy dash.

Racing returns to The Speed Bowl Friday evening, July 14, as the regular four divisions return to action. The first green flag flies at 8:00 p.m.
