Dover does it in Eagle Sprints, VanLaningham's visit pays off

By Jason Orth

Eagle, Neb. (July 8, 2006) - Rookie Jack Dover won his first point-paying Budweiser Championship Sprint division A feature Saturday night at Eagle Raceway with a bold move on race leader Josh Riggins with only two laps remaining. Mike Meyer inched his way closer to a record seventh track title with his fourth win in the Sobe NoFear IMCA Modified class. Jesse VanLaningham led a slew of Beatrice Speedway regulars who hi-tailed it to Eagle Raceway after a rainout at their home track and won the Stereo West Auto Toys Hobby Stock feature. Mark Schumacker led all 10 laps of the Stereo West Auto Toys Tuner A main for his first win at the 1/3-mile track.

The Sprint A started off with Josh Riggins taking the early lead from the front row while Tadd and Terry Holliman gave chase. Overnight rain gave racers a fast and heavy surface all night, and by lap 10 Riggins began to run down lap traffic. Behind him Jack Dover battled with Mike Boston and Larry Pinegar, II for fourth place. A yellow flag on lap 13 for third-place Terry Holliman gave Dover the chance to nab second from Tadd Holliman one lap after the restart, and he closed in rapidly on Riggins, who had built a six-length lead.

As both hugged the bottom groove, Dover stayed close until lap 23 when he shot between an opening between Riggins and the berm to take the lead going into turn one. As the field worked lapped traffic, Riggins made one more move on the outside coming out of turn four, but Dover held off the challenge and crossed a car length ahead. The win was Dover's second at Eagle in his inaugural season, the first victory coming in the June 8 Jim Eckley Memorial race. Following Riggins was Pinegar, Toby Chapman and Chad Humston.

Another Beatrice regular, Jordan Grabouski may have been better off staying at home as the first B-feature winner barrel rolled hard in turn three on the opening lap of the IMCA Modfied A feature. After the debris cleared, Norm Zigenbein took off from the front row, while Aaron Pella pursued. The two battled for the lead with Pella briefly taking over on lap five until he pushed to the wall coming out of turn four and fell to tsecond.

Meanwhile, Mike Meyer charged from the sixth row and took second place from Pella at the halfway point, then beat Zigenbein into turn one with eight laps remaining to take the lead. Chris Alcorn came out on top of a three-way battle for second and closed the gap on Meyer with four laps remaining. It wasn't enough to keep Meyer from his fourth victory of 2006. Alcorn, Rik Gropp, Zigenbein, and Doug Deterding rounded out the top five.

Don Hall, Jr. worked his way to the lead of the 15-lap A feature after coming out in front of a three-wide race down the backstretch on the opening lap. Hall contended with Brian Cudly after Cudly made his way past Rex Schreinder on lap four. Behind them Jesse VanLaningham raced from the middle of the pack to take third place with just four laps down, and a yellow flag for Kyle Vanover set the stage for an intense restart.

Hall held point until lap 10 when VanLaningham made his move on the outside of turn four to take the lead. Despite two yellow flag restarts with five laps to go, VanLaningham was able to pull out to a half-straightaway advantage at the checkered flag over Hall. Aaron Dewalt nipped Cudly at the line for third, Casey Meyer was fifth.

Mark Schumacker dominated each lap of the Tuner A feature, but Adrian Dover tried her best to sound the Dixie horn on her “General Lee” machine as she shot through the field in the closing laps. Schumacker won by a straightaway over Dover at the line ahead of Neil Pella, Barry Kinnersley and Jack Prall, III. However, Dover was penalized one spot for contact during the race and would be scored third.
