Red Cloud opens Thunder Series

RED CLOUD, NE (July 28)—A large field of cars gathered at The Speed Bowl in Red Cloud, NE, Friday evening, July 28, for the first of the 4-night ‘Thunder Series’.

Hometown driver Lonnie Schriner led from green to checkered in the 20-lap IMCA Modified main event to claim his second win of the year and the $1,000 winner’s check. Jon Thompson chased Schriner the entire distance, then was nipped at the finish line by Dusty Blake for the runner-up spot. Larry Sutton and Dustin Daniels rounded out the top five. Heat race winners were Thompson, Sutton, Brian Calhoon and Dwight Housh, while Daniels and Jordan Grabouski claimed the 2 B-mains.

Guide Rock’s Matt Streit finally found his way to victory lane in the IMCA Stock Car division. Streit took the lead at the drop of the green in the 20-lap feature and was able to hang on through 3 caution periods to claim his first win at the 3/8-mile oval this season. Eric Rempel won the race for second over Lance Borgman, Brett Behrends and Josh Hudson. Borgman, Cory Struckhoff and Jared Remus won the three heat races.

‘The Bussman’ Jim Buss continued his winning ways in the IMCA Hobby Stock class with his seventh feature win of the year. Wade Wagenblast led the first 9 laps in the 15-lap feature before the Hastings driver took command. However, after a caution flag on lap 12 for Jamie Reiman, Buss was docked one position on the restart for jumping the start on the previous green. But after the green came back out, Buss drove around Wagenblast to take a lead he would not relinquish. Mike Shriver finished in second, followed by Jerry Hudson, Delbert Selvage, and heat one winner Wagenblast. Rocky Zimmerman and Buss were victorious in the other two heat races.

Point leaders Adam Sidlo & E.J. Kothe of Hastings started outside pole of the Cruiser feature, jumped to the lead on the opening lap and drove away for their sixth win of the year. Ron & Kent Duffy made a late charge but settled for second, followed by Pat & Joe Hersh. Joe & Jacob Krone won the other heat race.

Racing returns to The Speed Bowl Friday night, August 4, with the regular four divisions in competition. Race time is 8:00 p.m.
