Spieker, Kosiski, and Berck Take Latemodel Wins at I-80

By Joey Sparano

(GREENWOOD NEB., 07/30/06) On a beautiful Nebraska night, a capacity crowd filled Nebraska Raceway Park's I-80 Speedway for Carl Edwards / Clint Bowyer Night Presented by Jack Daniel's. However, three local names would steal the show as Chris Spieker won the first annual Race of Champions, Ed Kosiski took the checkers in the Dodge Super Latemodels, and Kyle Berck grabbed the Grand National feature win at the 4/10 of a mile dirt oval.

The first annual I-80 Speedway Race of Champions would have Alex Humphrey and Clint Bowyer lead the field to the green flag. Neither would lead the first lap as third place starter Brian Harris jumped to the early lead. Harris would lead the first five circuits until lap six when the #33z of Kyle Berck would motor his way to the point. Lap ten would see the only caution period of the race as Ed Kosiski came to a stop in turn two. After the restart, the event would turn into a two horse race between Berck and the 2004 I-80 Speedway Track Champion Chris Spieker. Spieker and Berck would race side by side for many laps until Spieker's #33 would finally get by to take the lead on lap 18. Berck wouldn't give up so easily as he would get back by Spieker with only four laps to go. Spieker would stay on the top of the track and pass Berck on the next lap, this time for good. Spieker would go on to take the win in the 25 lap event; followed by Berck, Kelly Boen, Jason Hobsheidt, and Joe Kosiski.

The 25 lap NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series "A" feature event saw Jerry Warner take the early race lead from his outside row two starting spot. Warner would stay out front with Bryant Goldsmith running second when the yellow flew for a spinning Alonzo Grosse. When the race got back under way it was still Warner out front, but Ed Kosiski would jump into second after restarting fifth. Kosiski would then pass Warner on lap 15. Ed Kosiski then drove his #9 Dodge to his first win of the season. Joe Kosiski finished second. Goldsmith and Warner were third and fourth. Kyle Berck would bring home fifth.

Bill Bader Jr. would grab the early lead in the 18 lap Home Pride Modified feature. Lap six would see outside front row starter Bob Zoubek get by Bader for the top spot. The big mover of the night was the #96j of Johnny "The Jet" Saathoff. "Jet" would pull into the second position on lap seven, he would then race Zoubek for the win. Saathoff would get along side of Zoubek's #5s, but he could not make the pass. Zoubek went on to win his first race of the season. Saathoff, Bill Hull, Mike Johnson, and Randy Foote rounded out the top five.

After winning the "B" Feature, Nextel Cup Rookie Clint Bowyer drove to a seventh place finish in his #79 modified.

The Grand National "A" main would see a six car accident on lap one, with Nextel Cup star Carl Edwards getting the worse end of the deal. When racing resumed it was Carl's little brother Kenny taking the lead in his #25. Kenny Edwards would jump to a straightaway lead until lap nine when Rookie Dwane Pospisil would spin. When the yellow flag came out, third position belonged to veteran Kyle Berck. Berck would pass both Edwards and second place runner Dave Cook on the restart, he would then drive on to victory. Points Leader Dave Livingston would finish second, followed by Kenny Edwards, Dave Doll, and Rick Stolley.

Just like in the Modified, Clint Bowyer would win the Grand National "B" feature. He would then race his #07 Jack Daniel's machine to a seventh place in the feature.

Jesse Sobbing would win the Stereo West Auto Toys Hobby Stock feature event after first and second place runners Chuck Madden Jr and Josh True tangled on the last lap. Sobbing picked up the $100 Tom & Tiff's Family Restaurant bonus. Tom Myers, Rick Munson, Jeremy Auten, and Bob Kracher rounded out the top five.

With this being the last week to get into the Chase for the Championship, the following drivers made the top ten in points.
