Boston Wins Fifth Eagle Sprint Feature

By Jason Orth

Eagle, Neb., (July 15, 2006) – Mike Boston of Crete, NE won for the fifth time in the Budweiser Championship Sprint division, the first five-time winner in the class since Billy Alley did it in 2002. Rich Small notched win number three in the Stereo West Auto Toys Hobby Stocks. Tracy Harr took advantage of some yellow flags to grab his first victory in the Sobe No Fear IMCA Modifieds, and Dan Rhiley came out on top of the Stereo West Auto Toys Tuner A feature after Barry Kinnersley was penalized after taking the checkered flag.

Neil Pella took the early lead in the tuner main event. With five laps to go, Kinnersley made the move on a sideways Pella coming out of turn four to take the lead. However, point leader Adrian Dover charged forward and passed Kinnersley with two laps remaining. As the two raced alongside each other through turns one and two, Kinnersley hit the back of Dover’s car, sending her sideways and Kinnersley past. Though he took the checkered flag, officials penalized him heavily for the incident back to fifth. The win went to second place Dan Rhiley, with Doug Lyons the runner up, Dover third and Pella fourth.

All 24 entrants in the Hobby Stock field started the 15-lap A feature. A five car pileup on the front stretch ensued as the field came around for lap two, and the red flag flew. After a brief tense moment as safety crews looked at Ron Allen, the race restarted with a three-wide battle for the lead. Jerry Keaton, Jim Musel and Rich Small raced side by side until three of the top four tangled in turn four, with Small coming out of the melee in front. RJ Macku and point leader Justin Wulf pressured Small throughout most of the race, but in the closing laps, Small pulled away for the win. Macku, Wulf, Rob Brown, and Brian Cudly followed.

Tracy Harr passed leader Jesse Robinson in turn one with seven laps down to take the lead in the IMCA Modified A feature. Chris Alcorn, looking for win number three moved quickly from the tenth starting position to challenge Harr for the lead with nine laps to go. As the field entered lapped traffic, Alcorn took the lead twice, but yellow flags flew before he crossed the line each time, which gave the lead back to Harr. After Robert Brinkman spun with four laps to go, it was a shootout for the finish between, Harr, Alcorn and Mike Meyer. Harr kept the bottom groove locked down. Alcorn tried to make a move on the outside, but couldn’t get the momentum up. Coming out of turn four on the final lap, Meyer tried to take both of them on the outside, but he couldn’t do the deed. Harr took the win, Alcorn and Meyer followed. Doug Deterding was fourth, while Rik Gropp finished fifth.

An unprecedented 25 cars lined up for the Sprint A feature. Jay Jordan took the lead, while Rob Lipker and Toby Chapman gave chase. Josh Riggins got together with Bill Garrow and Riggins rolled in turn four, forcing the red flag. Jordan held point on the restart, but Mike Boston was closing in rapidly after starting twelfth. With eleven laps down, Boston passed Gullion on the backstretch for third place. The yellow flew again as Ryan Roberts looped the car in turn two. Boston took second from Chapman as they went into turn one on the restart, then passed Jordan for the lead going into turn three. The yellow flew one more time as Jack Dover came to a stop in turn four after spinning.

Boston led on the restart, but Adam Gullion made the pass on Chapman for second with three laps remaining and closed in on Boston. On the final lap, Gullion got into the marbles in turn one, and Boston pulled away. Gullion held on for second, with Chapman third, Stu Snyder fourth and Gene Ackland fifth.

Next Saturday is the ASCS Midwest vs N. Plains region race at Eagle Raceway. The Sprints will not be running for track points, as this is an ASCS sanctioned show. The Modifieds, Hobby Stocks and Tuners will run a regular program.
