Eagle 8-25: Danley, Alcorn, Kros and Busboom Win Season Finale

By Greg Soukup

A very large crowd was in the stands for the Season Finale and Championship
Points Night at Eagle Raceway, sponsored by Auto Trans Matic. An
unseasonably mild August afternoon gave way to a cool August night as the
season's points championships were decided at "America's Home Track".

The first B Feature was for the Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sports Compacts.
At the end of the first lap Jack Prall III was in the lead in his #44,
followed by the 99 of Jason Tadlock, the 22 of rookie Elliot Halvorson,
Barry Kinnersley in the #00 and the #24 of Mike Rice. On the 3rd lap
Halvorson got loose, allowing both Kinnersley and Rice to get by. The top 5
remained unchanged to the finish with Prall III winning, Tadlock 2nd,
Kinnersley 3rd, Rice in 4th and Halvorson taking the final transfer spot.

The Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds then came out for their B. Dan
Wayman's 5ST was in 1st with the 95 of Dylan Smith in 2nd, Doug Deterding in
the #13 3rd, the 57 of Brian Cudly in 4th and the 8C of Chad Anderson in
5th. Before the first lap was over Anderson moved around Cudly for the 4th
position. Cudly slowed dramatically and George Haney moved up into the final
transfer spot. At the checkered flag it was Wayman, Smith, Anderson,
Deterding and Haney.

The last B Main saw the Budweiser Championship 360 Sprint cars on the track.
The early going showed Frank Galusha's #24B at the point, followed by Ryan
Kitchen's #21, Josh Riggins in the 14, the 20D of Dan Nickolite and Terry
Holliman in the #23. On lap #6 Chris Roseland got around Holliman for 5th.
The finish showed Galusha winning, Kitchen 2nd, Riggins 3rd, Dan Nickolite
4th and Roseland coming back from a rollover in his heat race to transfer to
the A Feature.

Then it was time for the Feature events of the evening to begin. The Stereo
West Auto Toys IMCA Sport Compacts lead the way. The first lap was marred by
a red flag which came out when Neil Pella rolled over between turns 1 & 2.
Pella was unhurt, and even told the fans "That was FUN!!!" before retiring
to the pits to the cheers of the crowd. On the complete restart Jason Miller
grabbed the lead in his #77 with Harry White's #3 in 2nd; following them
were the #51 of Amanda Rhiley and the 0 of Rich White. Amanda Rhiley got
around Harry White for the 2nd spot before a lap was completed. 3 laps later
Justin Busboom grabbed 4th position from Rich White and then moved around
Harry White the following lap. Dan Rhiley moved up to 4th after 3 more laps.
On lap 12 Amanda Rhiley spun and went into the infield. The cars held their
positions with Miller crossing the finish line first followed by Busboom,
Elliot Halvorson's #22 and the #26 of Derek Dreamer. When the top 4
finishers went to the infield, Maynard Kinnersley placed a claim on the #77
of Jason Miller. Miller refused the claim however and, per IMCA rules, was
disqualified and forfeited all of his points and winnings for the evening.
Miller also received a suspension for 4 IMCA points racing nights. This
resulted in Justin Busboom being declared the victor.

This is only Justin Busboom's 3rd year in racing, having competed at
Beatrice Speedway in Hobby Stocks his first year. The next 2 years were
right here at Eagle Raceway, running in the Sport Compact division. "I just
want to thank all of the fans for coming out every week," Busboom said. "I
hope they enjoy the good close racing that the Sport Compacts bring to the
track every night, and I hope they all come back next year" he stated.

Despite having finished in the 6th position, young Kyle Schamp managed to
take home the season championship in the Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sport
Compacts. "Next year I hope to be out here in the 2K IMCA Modified" Kyle
said.

The Valentino's Pizza IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature was next. Don Kros moved
into the lead in his #53, with the 22 of Nick Beckman in 2nd and the #9 of
Rex Schreiner in 3rd. Schreiner got around Beckman on the 2nd circuit. On
lap #6 both Beckman and the #21H of Shane Hiatt got under Schreiner. Rick
Bradley suffered a flat right rear tire on his #28B before the lap was
completed however, forcing a restart. On lap #12 Hiatt spun. That made the
running order Kros, Beckman, Schreiner and the #86 of Justin Wulf. On the
very next lap Wulf got loose, allowing the 38C of Casey Moyer to grab the
4th spot. Wulf took only 1 lap to get back around Moyer and pass Schreiner
also to move into 3rd. At the finish stripe it was Kros, Beckman, Wulf and
Moyer. Another disqualification was made when Beckman was found to have
modifications at the rear of his racer. That put Wulf in 2nd and Moyer in
3rd.

This was Kros' 2nd victory in a row at Eagle. "I need to thank my crew;
Jeff, Gene and Millie Kros for helping me all year and giving me a winning
car. I hope that all the fans come back next year, because I can't wait to
get back here and do some more racing," Kros stated.

The Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds then rolled onto the 1/3-mile
high-banks of Eagle. Dusty Anderson led in the 8A with Tom Spanel's #3T,
Lucas Robinson's 95R, Justin Jurgens' 22J and the 11AA of Ed Raines close on
his rear bumper. Spanel moved into the lead on lap #5. Jesse Robinson spun
his #75J the same lap, but the leaders had passed the flag stand. Defending
track champion Chris Alcorn got around both Bob Rusinger's #7 and Raines'
11AA the next lap to grab 5th. The following circuit he also passed Robinson
to take over the 4th spot. On lap #10 Spanel and Anderson got together and
spun in turn #4. This put Jurgens at the point, followed by Alcorn, Robinson
and Raines. It took Raines only 2 more laps to get around Robinson for the
3rd spot. With just 4 laps remaining Alcorn got around Jurgens for the lead.
Meanwhile, Doug Deterding had been on the move from his tail-end starting
spot. With 3 laps left he had moved up to the 4th spot. When the checkered
flag flew it was Alcorn, Jurgens, Raines and Deterding.

"First of all, I want to thank all of the fans for having come out to see us
all year. They've been here through the cold, the heat and all the bugs
cheering us on every week. The racers really appreciate them having stuck
with us this year" Alcorn said. "Next, I need to thank my sponsors for
giving me the equipment to race week in and week out" he stated. Chris'
sponsors include Midwest Unlimited, Alcorn/Thompson/Hill Motorsports, The
Alley Bar, Spanel Racing, L & L Motorsports, Jet Racing, Doctor Johns and
Heavy Company. "I kind of wish the track had stayed the way it was in the
heat race, nice & slick; because we missed the set-up for the Feature
completely. Luckily the moisture came up and I finally got the car to go,"
he added. "I just hope that the car count was high enough to allow this win
to count towards the national championship. It was great to win back-to-back
points championships here at Eagle, but the National win would top it all
off" he finished.

The last A Main of the evening was for the Budweiser Championship 360
Sprints. Rookie Trevor Grossenbacher pulled out to a small lead at the drop
of the green flag in his #35. Behind him the running order was the 7G of
Mike Gabelhouse, the 17 of Gage Dorr and Gene Acklund in the 14G. Dorr got
under Gablehouse to snag the 3rd position on lap 3. Next lap Tige Jensen's
71 and Acklund's 14G got together, causing Jensen to spin with a flat right
rear tire which sent him to the pits. Acklund was relegated to the rear of
the field for his involvement also. The running order prior to the restart
was Grossenbacher, Dorr, Gabelhouse and the 28 of Ken Klabunde. After the
green flew, Adam Gullion went under both Gabelhouse and Klabunde to move
into 3rd. Shortly after that Ryan Kitchen spun his #21 in turns 1 & 2,
bringing out yet another yellow. With 16 laps remaining, Gullion and Jason
Danley's #82 both got around Dorr to take over 2nd and 3rd. 5 laps later
Danley passed Gullion for 2nd and set his sights on Grossenbacher. Danley
had been moving rapidly through the field passing everyone on the bottom of
the track. With just 10 circuits left in the race Danley moved under
Grossenbacher to snag the lead briefly, until Tige Jensen and John Klabunde
spun in turns 1 & 2 causing a restart. When the green flag flew,
Grossenbacher moved down to the bottom of the track to fend off Danley. With
5 laps left Jay Russell moved up to 3rd in the #76 and then got around
Grossenbacher the next lap after Danley also passed him on the high side. At
the finish it was Danley, Russell, Grossenbacher, Brad Krutz in the #91 and
Adam Gullion.

"I want to thank my crew, Marvin Brees, Dave Skillman and Jake for all the
hard work they do for me every race. I also need to thank my owner; on that
last yellow flag he signaled for me to get up on the wheel and get going.
That was what got me into the lead. I got lucky and found the bottom first,
letting me get by all of those cars in the early going. I tell you this;
Trevor drove one heck of a race. He saw me get by him on the bottom, and
when that yellow came out he moved down to protect it. I knew I had to get
the jump on him on that last restart, and luckily I did" Danley said. "I
want to thank all of my sponsors too, because without them we wouldn't be
able to race". Danley's sponsors include Cosaert Thorobreds, Cubby's
Greenwood Truck Plaza, Jerry Crowley Investment, Mark Burch Motorsports,
Egan Equipment Company and Skillman Auto.

Be sure to come out next SUNDAY afternoon, September 2nd for the "Nebraska
Cup" at Eagle Raceway. Featured will be the Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sport
Compacts (sanctioned), Valentino's IMCA Hobby Stocks (unsanctioned & no
claim but IMCA rules apply), Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds
(sanctioned) and the Budweiser Championship 360 Sprint Cars. Following the
races there will be a Pit Party in the Hospitality Pavilion for everyone
wearing a pit armband.
