End of the season and the Good Ol' Days
There is a difference in the air - while it may be the same temperature as late spring day, the smells of soon-to-be harvested crops sweeten the breeze, there is a feeling at the end of the year similar to the ending of a work day - except this time it's the end of the racing year. It's a time that always punctuates my memories of each season.
A thread on Dirtdrivers.com had several people reminiscing about times gone by and the sound of Ford Flatheads, Offys and Novi engines in cars of the 50's and 60's.
But the "good ol' days" are relative. I'm not a youngin' compared to some of the new crop of drivers and fans, while I may be a kid to the likes of the folks who remember races at Capitol Beach, Sunset Speedway, Midwest, and so on. We all have our memories. I remember with some fondness the days of 16-foot wings on sprint cars and the World of Outlaws were truly "Run whatcha brung" - others remember no wings at all. The younger people know nothing of little wings.
Maybe in 20 years the racing technology will change so that the sound of a Chevy V-8 will sound sweet to those who remember it and be foreign to the spectators watching dual-overhead cam, or electric, or some synthetic-fuel-burning 15,000 RPM motors winding in their place. Who knows?
For all of us, it's different. But it's important that we remember these things and look fondly upon them. But we can't browbeat others into thinking that the natural evolution is inherently bad. People complaining about purses, track conditions, rough driving, accusations of cheating, and so on have been part of racing since day one. The last-lap wins, jubilant drivers and the thrill of a good show have been permanent fixtures as well. It's all part of the entire experience.
No time today is worse than the other, nor is it necessarily better. It just is, and it should always be a time to cherish. None of us would be there if we didn't like it. Racing is entertainment at its core, and even those who work in the field are still part of the entertainment industry. We are part of it because we want to be, it isn't like farming, or building, or those things people have to do. So we need to remember WHY we are there and use that to fuel our memories of days gone by as the laps run behind us.
It's in our nature to long for what we thought was the best of times but so long as we're enjoying the racing, every time we go to the track, and no matter if what we see is good or bad, we're always living in the "good ol' days."
Sprint Driver Rodney Droud to Retire this Weekend
The Final Race
(08/29) Folks, the time has finally come. After a great deal of prayer and soul-searching, it is time to call it a racing career- I intend to retire after this weekend’s Nebraska Cup at Eagle Raceway.
Ever since I won that first track championship with the Opp Racing Team, I had toyed with the idea of “hanging it up.” Why not go out a “winner” while the going was good? But the following year, Dad put together a potent team that just wouldn’t allow it. I ended up winning a second consecutive title and the thrill to drive kept gnawing at me. So I decided to race on and off in 2006 and figured that I was still good enough to do it again this year. But I want to be honest: it’s been a struggle. While Dad has put me (and Jr.) in a great car this year, I haven’t been nearly as “effective” as I hoped I could be. We had makeshift crews almost every night (except for my long-time crewman, Scott Deines) and that took its toll on me. While Jr. could handle it, I was incapable of separating the duties of a pitman and a driver and I think it showed in my performances. We were blessed to have some wonderful sponsors in ’07, but it wasn’t nearly enough, especially after the early season crash that destroyed one of Dad’s cars. While it wasn’t my fault, I wasn’t able to shake the fact that Dad was having to foot 99% of the bills and that really bothered me. The crash two weeks ago, which was a true “racin’ deal,” took the last bit of wind out of my sails.
I was honored when former owner, Jeff Bogue (57), paid me the ultimate compliment by asking me to drive his car again. My 2004 championship winning owner, Ed “Zippy” Opp, also threw me a huge helping of confidence when he told me afterwards that he thought I should keep racing because “you still have what it takes.” And even though he’s my dad, I find it hard to believe that he wouldn’t be straight with me and tell me like it is; he’s said time and time again that he does believe in me and knows I can do the job. I’m humbled by the fact that many have encouraged me and have faith in me, even to this day. I still think I can do it. In fact, I’m convinced that I have “the goods” to take the car to Victory Lane. But it’ll happen only one more time- this Sunday.
As I said earlier, I had really been praying about this and it’s my belief that God revealed what He wants me to do. I don’t have any idea what this means or what I’m supposed to do next, but as I put on my 2005 picture card, the Bible tells us in Jeremiah 29:11-12, “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord, “plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.”
Thank you so much for all the love and support you’ve given to Lori and I over the years! You have been great friends through it all…

I-80 Drivers Ranked in NASCAR NWAAS Top 10
drivers are ranked in the top 10 national standing of the NASCAR Whelen All
American Series (NWAAS); NASCAR's weekly racing series. Al Humphrey is tied
for fourth, and Joe Kosiski is only two points behind the fourth place
drivers. NASCAR ranks the top 500 drivers in the NWAAS, and there are
approximately 1800 drivers across the nation.
Not only are two of I-80 Speedway's drivers in the top 10, there also are 4
in the top 25, 8 in the top 100, with a total of 24 ranked nationally in the
top 500.
The drivers and their ranking are:
4-tie) Al Humphrey,
6) Joe Kosiski
16) Jason Hobscheidt
24) Leon Zeitner
61) Kenny Edwards
65) Jay Stewart
68) Clint Benson
89) Al Zeitner
110) Scott Koskovich
124) Bill Leighton, Jr.
176) Justin Zeitner
182) Todd Morgan
188) Andrew Kosiski
225) John Nicholson
231) Mike Collins
234) David Livingston
238) Dave Doll
260) Mike Wallace
337) Brad Soll
448) Keith Mander
455) Dwayne Pospisil
461) Gary Joens, Jr.
467) Rick Stolley
471) Corey Zeitner
The point structure utilized by NASCAR for this ranking features an
"inverted" point's format, with car counts affecting the amount of points a
competitor receives. Points will be awarded in ascending order with the last
place car receiving two points, next-to-last receiving four and will then
move up through the field in two point increments. (For example, the feature
winner in a 10-car field will receive 20 NASCAR points, while the feature
winner in a 25-car field would receive 50.) Competitors will count their 18
highest point finishes with a season-ending date of September 30, 2007. At
the end of the season, each top 500 driver will receive a certificate of
recognition from NASCAR displaying their 2007 ranking.
Helping to keep racing on track

When the Beatrice Speedway decided to say thank-you to racing supporter Garold Kleveland recently, it did so in a big way - a 40-foot way that is.
Saturday night as the Beatrice Speedway celebrated its 50th anniversary, Kleveland was honored during intermission for his years of service to the local racing community.
“Garold Kleveland has been a big part of Beatrice Speedway since Aug. 25, 1957,” Beatrice Speedway promoter Tim Fralin said. “He's supplied a wrecker and crew to every race we've had at the Speedway since that date.
“I don't know what we'd do without him.”
The Speedway's way of “saying thank you” to Kleveland was to honor him during the anniversary celebration and to name the catwalk in the back pit area after him.
Along with all of the other things he'd done for the race track over the years, Kleveland helped with the construction of the original section of the catwalk, which has since been added to.
“We made a 40-foot long sign and we're naming the catwalk after Garold,” Fralin said. “That's just a small step toward the appreciation he really deserves.”
Fralin said it was time to recognize Kleveland and track officials believed there was no better time than on the 50th anniversary of the Speedway.
Kleveland said he was “surprised” by the honor.
“I was really surprised,” Kleveland said, adding his family knew about the recognition, but didn't let him in on it. “Everybody kept everything pretty secretive.”
While Kleveland said the catwalk has been a nice addition to the pits and a bonus for those wanting to watch the races from the track's backstretch, he admits he's never seen a race from there.
“I've never watched a race from the grandstand, either,” Kleveland said, adding he “pits” with his wrecker along with the race car drivers on the track's infield.
From their spots inside the track, Fralin said Kleveland and his volunteer crew are always ready and waiting to help.
“On any given night, Garold has three to six trucks out here,” Fralin said. “If we had to pay for that by the hour, the cost would be astronomical, especially over 50 years.
“To have him supply that for us at no cost every week is incredible.”
Fralin said Kleveland is “always there” when the racers need him, whether it's to tow their car off the race track or help load the car when they are ready to go home.
“If you need something after the races or you need a ride home, they'll tow your car,” Fralin said. “They've done it for numerous drivers out here over the years.”
Aside from the equipment and manpower he and his crew provide, Fralin said Kleveland also brings a lot of knowledge to the racetrack each week.
“When you've been at it as long as Garold, there's probably nothing anybody could teach him,” Fralin said.
Fralin said Kleveland always finds a way to get the job done with the least amount of damage to the race cars involved.
“We've seen him do the two wrecker bit where one is going backwards because there's no wheels on the car or it's incapable of moving,” Fralin said. “When you're hanging a car in mid air and hauling it with two wreckers, it takes special effort.
“They take good care of the equipment when they take it off the track. They don't just hook on and pull it off. They treat it like their own.”
As a former racer at the Beatrice Speedway, Fralin said “more than once” he's been taken off the track on the hook of one of Kleveland's wreckers.
“It means a lot when they show respect for your equipment,” Fralin said.
Along with taking care of their primary duties of pushing and towing race cars, Fralin said Kleveland and crew are always willing to help safety crews when needed in critical situations.
“They're always right on the spot,” Fralin said. “If somebody is hurt, they'll lend a hand if needed.”
Fralin said Kleveland's crews have helped cut drivers out of cars after wrecks.
Although races had previously been held at another location in Beatrice, the first races at the current Beatrice Speedway, located on the Gage County Fairgrounds, were held Aug. 25, 1957.
Kleveland and his wrecker crews have been a mainstay at the track since that time. He was previously honored by the racing community when the Beatrice Speedway Hall of Fame recognized its first class in 2002 and he was one of five individuals inducted.
When the track first opened, Kleveland said “everyone” was anxious to help. He said each race night there were multiple push tracks and pack trucks helping with the racing program.
Kleveland said he and his family were “new in town” when he first started volunteering at the former race track at the old fairgrounds in 1955.
In the early days, Kleveland said everybody who had a wrecker or push truck was at the track on race night.
“I don't know if we were ever really asked to get involved or if we just wanted to be part of it,” Kleveland said.
When he first started working the races, Kleveland said he had an old panel track, which he used as a push truck. The earlier-day race cars, including models like the 1932 Plymouth, had to be “pushed” to start Kleveland said, and it took a number of push trucks just to get races started.
Kleveland bought his first wrecker in 1959 and immediately started taking it to the race track.
There have been many positive changes in racing since he first started working at the track, Kleveland said. He said all of the safety equipment at the Speedway has improved greatly over the past 50 years.
Kleveland said radios, which help the safety crews stay in contact with each other, were one improvement.
Over the years, Kleveland said his “duties” at the race track had changed.
“Now, the four-wheelers do the majority of the pushing,” Kleveland said. “They're quicker and they're more maneuverable.”
Another positive addition was when fire trucks were first used at the track.
“We used to carry a fire extinguisher in our old power wagon,” Kleveland said. “But that was slow and we were dumb. We didn't have near the safety features we have now.”
Kleveland said track fire crews are now specially trained in how to handle situations on the race track.
“Having the fire truck and the ambulance there has taken a lot of responsibility off us,” Kleveland said.
Driver's safety, however, is always Kleveland's first concern, though.
The incidents he remembers most over the years at the Speedway have involved driver injuries, including having to extricate drivers from their cars.
Watching and helping other rescue personnel work to free drivers from wrecks has prompted Kleveland to add to the equipment he brings to the race track.
Pipe cutters, which can be used to take the tops off race cars and free drivers, were one addition he's made over the years.
“It all evolves from just the experience of things happening,” Kleveland said.
Kleveland said track officials have been proactive in “getting things done” when safety issues need to be addressed.
Kleveland said a lot of people, include Gage County Ag Society members, volunteer their time at the Speedway week after week all summer long and work to make racing a good experience for all involved.
“You have to have a respect for what they're doing,” Kleveland said.
Racing has done a lot for the Beatrice community, Kleveland said, and to be a “rung” in its ladder is nice.
“The races bring a lot of commerce to our town,” Kleveland said. “I don't know that all of the town people realize that to the degree it is.”
While his most recent honor was special, Kleveland said his biggest reward over the last 50-plus years has been in the friendships he's made with drivers, their crews and others at the local Speedway.
“Everybody tries to help each other,” Kleveland said. “The biggest share of the drivers and their crews are real appreciative and that makes it fun.”

Eagle 8-25: Danley, Alcorn, Kros and Busboom Win Season Finale
A very large crowd was in the stands for the Season Finale and Championship
Points Night at Eagle Raceway, sponsored by Auto Trans Matic. An
unseasonably mild August afternoon gave way to a cool August night as the
season's points championships were decided at "America's Home Track".
The first B Feature was for the Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sports Compacts.
At the end of the first lap Jack Prall III was in the lead in his #44,
followed by the 99 of Jason Tadlock, the 22 of rookie Elliot Halvorson,
Barry Kinnersley in the #00 and the #24 of Mike Rice. On the 3rd lap
Halvorson got loose, allowing both Kinnersley and Rice to get by. The top 5
remained unchanged to the finish with Prall III winning, Tadlock 2nd,
Kinnersley 3rd, Rice in 4th and Halvorson taking the final transfer spot.
The Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds then came out for their B. Dan
Wayman's 5ST was in 1st with the 95 of Dylan Smith in 2nd, Doug Deterding in
the #13 3rd, the 57 of Brian Cudly in 4th and the 8C of Chad Anderson in
5th. Before the first lap was over Anderson moved around Cudly for the 4th
position. Cudly slowed dramatically and George Haney moved up into the final
transfer spot. At the checkered flag it was Wayman, Smith, Anderson,
Deterding and Haney.
The last B Main saw the Budweiser Championship 360 Sprint cars on the track.
The early going showed Frank Galusha's #24B at the point, followed by Ryan
Kitchen's #21, Josh Riggins in the 14, the 20D of Dan Nickolite and Terry
Holliman in the #23. On lap #6 Chris Roseland got around Holliman for 5th.
The finish showed Galusha winning, Kitchen 2nd, Riggins 3rd, Dan Nickolite
4th and Roseland coming back from a rollover in his heat race to transfer to
the A Feature.
Then it was time for the Feature events of the evening to begin. The Stereo
West Auto Toys IMCA Sport Compacts lead the way. The first lap was marred by
a red flag which came out when Neil Pella rolled over between turns 1 & 2.
Pella was unhurt, and even told the fans "That was FUN!!!" before retiring
to the pits to the cheers of the crowd. On the complete restart Jason Miller
grabbed the lead in his #77 with Harry White's #3 in 2nd; following them
were the #51 of Amanda Rhiley and the 0 of Rich White. Amanda Rhiley got
around Harry White for the 2nd spot before a lap was completed. 3 laps later
Justin Busboom grabbed 4th position from Rich White and then moved around
Harry White the following lap. Dan Rhiley moved up to 4th after 3 more laps.
On lap 12 Amanda Rhiley spun and went into the infield. The cars held their
positions with Miller crossing the finish line first followed by Busboom,
Elliot Halvorson's #22 and the #26 of Derek Dreamer. When the top 4
finishers went to the infield, Maynard Kinnersley placed a claim on the #77
of Jason Miller. Miller refused the claim however and, per IMCA rules, was
disqualified and forfeited all of his points and winnings for the evening.
Miller also received a suspension for 4 IMCA points racing nights. This
resulted in Justin Busboom being declared the victor.
This is only Justin Busboom's 3rd year in racing, having competed at
Beatrice Speedway in Hobby Stocks his first year. The next 2 years were
right here at Eagle Raceway, running in the Sport Compact division. "I just
want to thank all of the fans for coming out every week," Busboom said. "I
hope they enjoy the good close racing that the Sport Compacts bring to the
track every night, and I hope they all come back next year" he stated.
Despite having finished in the 6th position, young Kyle Schamp managed to
take home the season championship in the Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sport
Compacts. "Next year I hope to be out here in the 2K IMCA Modified" Kyle
said.
The Valentino's Pizza IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature was next. Don Kros moved
into the lead in his #53, with the 22 of Nick Beckman in 2nd and the #9 of
Rex Schreiner in 3rd. Schreiner got around Beckman on the 2nd circuit. On
lap #6 both Beckman and the #21H of Shane Hiatt got under Schreiner. Rick
Bradley suffered a flat right rear tire on his #28B before the lap was
completed however, forcing a restart. On lap #12 Hiatt spun. That made the
running order Kros, Beckman, Schreiner and the #86 of Justin Wulf. On the
very next lap Wulf got loose, allowing the 38C of Casey Moyer to grab the
4th spot. Wulf took only 1 lap to get back around Moyer and pass Schreiner
also to move into 3rd. At the finish stripe it was Kros, Beckman, Wulf and
Moyer. Another disqualification was made when Beckman was found to have
modifications at the rear of his racer. That put Wulf in 2nd and Moyer in
3rd.
This was Kros' 2nd victory in a row at Eagle. "I need to thank my crew;
Jeff, Gene and Millie Kros for helping me all year and giving me a winning
car. I hope that all the fans come back next year, because I can't wait to
get back here and do some more racing," Kros stated.
The Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds then rolled onto the 1/3-mile
high-banks of Eagle. Dusty Anderson led in the 8A with Tom Spanel's #3T,
Lucas Robinson's 95R, Justin Jurgens' 22J and the 11AA of Ed Raines close on
his rear bumper. Spanel moved into the lead on lap #5. Jesse Robinson spun
his #75J the same lap, but the leaders had passed the flag stand. Defending
track champion Chris Alcorn got around both Bob Rusinger's #7 and Raines'
11AA the next lap to grab 5th. The following circuit he also passed Robinson
to take over the 4th spot. On lap #10 Spanel and Anderson got together and
spun in turn #4. This put Jurgens at the point, followed by Alcorn, Robinson
and Raines. It took Raines only 2 more laps to get around Robinson for the
3rd spot. With just 4 laps remaining Alcorn got around Jurgens for the lead.
Meanwhile, Doug Deterding had been on the move from his tail-end starting
spot. With 3 laps left he had moved up to the 4th spot. When the checkered
flag flew it was Alcorn, Jurgens, Raines and Deterding.
"First of all, I want to thank all of the fans for having come out to see us
all year. They've been here through the cold, the heat and all the bugs
cheering us on every week. The racers really appreciate them having stuck
with us this year" Alcorn said. "Next, I need to thank my sponsors for
giving me the equipment to race week in and week out" he stated. Chris'
sponsors include Midwest Unlimited, Alcorn/Thompson/Hill Motorsports, The
Alley Bar, Spanel Racing, L & L Motorsports, Jet Racing, Doctor Johns and
Heavy Company. "I kind of wish the track had stayed the way it was in the
heat race, nice & slick; because we missed the set-up for the Feature
completely. Luckily the moisture came up and I finally got the car to go,"
he added. "I just hope that the car count was high enough to allow this win
to count towards the national championship. It was great to win back-to-back
points championships here at Eagle, but the National win would top it all
off" he finished.
The last A Main of the evening was for the Budweiser Championship 360
Sprints. Rookie Trevor Grossenbacher pulled out to a small lead at the drop
of the green flag in his #35. Behind him the running order was the 7G of
Mike Gabelhouse, the 17 of Gage Dorr and Gene Acklund in the 14G. Dorr got
under Gablehouse to snag the 3rd position on lap 3. Next lap Tige Jensen's
71 and Acklund's 14G got together, causing Jensen to spin with a flat right
rear tire which sent him to the pits. Acklund was relegated to the rear of
the field for his involvement also. The running order prior to the restart
was Grossenbacher, Dorr, Gabelhouse and the 28 of Ken Klabunde. After the
green flew, Adam Gullion went under both Gabelhouse and Klabunde to move
into 3rd. Shortly after that Ryan Kitchen spun his #21 in turns 1 & 2,
bringing out yet another yellow. With 16 laps remaining, Gullion and Jason
Danley's #82 both got around Dorr to take over 2nd and 3rd. 5 laps later
Danley passed Gullion for 2nd and set his sights on Grossenbacher. Danley
had been moving rapidly through the field passing everyone on the bottom of
the track. With just 10 circuits left in the race Danley moved under
Grossenbacher to snag the lead briefly, until Tige Jensen and John Klabunde
spun in turns 1 & 2 causing a restart. When the green flag flew,
Grossenbacher moved down to the bottom of the track to fend off Danley. With
5 laps left Jay Russell moved up to 3rd in the #76 and then got around
Grossenbacher the next lap after Danley also passed him on the high side. At
the finish it was Danley, Russell, Grossenbacher, Brad Krutz in the #91 and
Adam Gullion.
"I want to thank my crew, Marvin Brees, Dave Skillman and Jake for all the
hard work they do for me every race. I also need to thank my owner; on that
last yellow flag he signaled for me to get up on the wheel and get going.
That was what got me into the lead. I got lucky and found the bottom first,
letting me get by all of those cars in the early going. I tell you this;
Trevor drove one heck of a race. He saw me get by him on the bottom, and
when that yellow came out he moved down to protect it. I knew I had to get
the jump on him on that last restart, and luckily I did" Danley said. "I
want to thank all of my sponsors too, because without them we wouldn't be
able to race". Danley's sponsors include Cosaert Thorobreds, Cubby's
Greenwood Truck Plaza, Jerry Crowley Investment, Mark Burch Motorsports,
Egan Equipment Company and Skillman Auto.
Be sure to come out next SUNDAY afternoon, September 2nd for the "Nebraska
Cup" at Eagle Raceway. Featured will be the Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sport
Compacts (sanctioned), Valentino's IMCA Hobby Stocks (unsanctioned & no
claim but IMCA rules apply), Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds
(sanctioned) and the Budweiser Championship 360 Sprint Cars. Following the
races there will be a Pit Party in the Hospitality Pavilion for everyone
wearing a pit armband.

ASCS Prime Time Premieres August 28
"ASCS Prime Time" will be a weekly show featuring discussion with and among drivers, officials and fans of the American Sprint Car Series from throughout the nation. The hour-long show will also be archived so those that miss out on the live version can listen to all the happenings at their convenience.
"This is great for K-MAC Sports but it's really great for ASCS fans, drivers and officials," ASCS Prime Time host Sarge Masom stated. "Because the K-MAC Sports broadcast site can be accessed by most anyone with access to a computer and the Internet, the ASCS show will allow series fans, drivers and team members to hear the show either live or via replay."
The show will run for 8-9 weeks every Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. central time. There are ongoing talks between ASCS officials and K-MAC Sports about possible post-season shows and race broadcasts.
"This really helps us take another step towards our goal of bringing some much-deserved and much-needed publicity to the dirt racing community," K-MAC Sports co-owner Chuck Licata said. "We're honored to have the confidence of Lonnie Wheatley and ASCS officials and we look forward to providing a quality program for all the followers of the series."
ASCS followers will be able to participate each week by calling in to the show at 1-877-786-KMAC or by e-mailing the show at ascs@kmacsports.com.
Guests for the initial installment of "ASCS Prime Time" will be finalized over the weekend and announced early next week, so make plans now to dial your computer in to www.kmacsports.com on Tuesday night, August 28, for "ASCS Prime Time".
Additional information regarding the American Sprint Car Series is available at www.ascsracing.com.
I-80 Military, Law Enforcement & Firefighter Appreciation w/Trailer Races Sunday
buildings set on boat trailers will race around the 4/10 mile I-80 Speedway
as Big Red Keno presents the NASCAR Whelen All American Series and Wacky
Trailer Races. Also on tap is "Military, Law Enforcement and Firefighter
Appreciation Night" presented by Whelen Engineering.
All Military, Law Enforcement and Firefighters will receive free admission
when they show their ID, or show up in uniform. This night was rescheduled
from August 12, when Mother Nature set a torrential downpour loose on the
track, and the night's activities were cancelled.
"We're glad we were able to work with Whelen Engineering to find a date to
recognize those who put the safety of others before their own," said Jon
Schwartz, owner.
After the action of the NASCAR Whelen All American Series, fans will be
treated to Wacky Trailer races. Drivers and crew decorate and place objects
on boat trailers that they hitch up to cars. Then, they race around the
track and try to hit each other, and dodge the objects falling off of the
trailer.
Tickets are $10 for adults, seniors 62 and older and juniors 11-17 are $8,
and kids 10 and under are free. Gates open at 5:00 p.m., hot laps at 6:00
p.m., and racing action starts at 6:30 p.m.

ASCS Midwest Region Update
SIOUX FALLS, SD (August 22, 2007) Rain…rain…and more rain…Holy flood
waters, Batman!
Over (5) inches of rain fell on the Jackson Speedway last Friday/Saturday
canceling the second night of one of the biggest paying races on our ASCS
Northern Plains 2007 schedule. We'll try again next year.
First, let's look at the upcoming schedule for the ASCS Northern Plains and
Midwest regions.
Up next for the ASCS Northern Plains race teams will be the (2) day
extravaganza in Brainerd, MN., the Mighty Axe Nationals, Saturday and Sunday
September 1st and 2nd. Last year over (200) total race cars checked in at
the back gate for each night which set car count records for the speedway in
Northern Minnesota.
North Central Speedway did suffer some grandstand damage over a week ago but
word is they're nicely getting things put back together and the (2) huge
year ending events are still a "go" so we hope to see a good car count for
this event. It will be one of the most fun events race fans and competitors
will have this season. Trust me. You have to be there.
We then head South to US36 Raceway in Cameron, MO on Friday September 7th
for the 2007 ASCS Midwest Region Championship race. Natalie Sather has all
but wrapped up the ASCS Midwest crown and I believe all she needs to do is
start the A feature and the title is hers. But I'm sure last seasons Midwest
Champion, Toby Chapman, will give it everything he's got and will fight
right down to the end.
We then head back north to Casino Speedway in Watertown, SD for an ASCS
Northern Points race on Saturday September 8th. Last years winner and
hometown favorite Chuck Swenson, will not be in competition as of the result
of his suspension which occurred at last weeks Jackson Nationals.
Which brings me to an important segment of this ASCS update.
There are quite a few rumors going around about what happened at Jackson and
surprisingly enough, most of these rumors come from people who weren't even
in attendance at the Jackson Nationals. Here's the facts:
We teched the top (4) cars from the A feature after the completion of Friday
night's race. When we teched the number X car, I found his cylinder heads
were in violation of the rules. After discussing this matter with the car
owner/driver, he declined the offer to pull the injection unit off for
further investigation and accepted his disqualification as it stood. The car
owner/driver has been suspended from all ASCS sanctioned events until
January 1, 2008. End of story as far as that incident is concerned.
The subject that I want to focus everybody's attention on here is this.
Racing today is a lot different from the olden days where all race teams
would build their own engines in their garage and have the local machine
shop down the street do all of their machine work. Most race teams today
simply order up their engine from a professional engine builder, and
sometimes, that engine builder is hundreds of miles from their race shop.
They buy these engines complete, dynoed and ready to simply drop in and
race.
It is your responsibility to make sure you are purchasing a legal engine for
whatever sanctioning body you plan on competing with. It is your
responsibility to make sure that your race car meets all the rules set forth
by the organization that you are competing with. We have stepped up our
teching procedures and will continue to do so.
Here's a preview of a few items that will be forth coming for the 2008 ASCS
race season:
**Changes**
As of January 1, 2008, all competitors using either FORD or MOPAR engines in
ASCS competition, must utilize the ASCS Spec Aluminum cylinder head in all
ASCS National and Regional events.
**Non Changes**
(Note – We have heard that the World of Outlaws have mandated the use of a
flat top wing with a (1) inch maximum wickerbill for the 2008 season. It
sounds like a few other 410 tracks might do the same.)
ASCS will not mandate a flat top wing with a (1) inch wickerbill for the
2008 season. It was an option in 2007 and will continue to be an option in
2008.
That's about it for this update. Hope to see everybody up in Brainerd for
the popular Mighty Axe Nationals September 1st and 2nd…CZ

NCRA Sprints Return to the Track, Mid-Nebraska Race Moved to Saturday
Nationals, it's back to the track for the O'Reilly NCRA Sprint Car Series,
presented by ICM/Ethanol.
The winged warriors race in Nebraska twice this weekend, but with one
schedule change. The Aug. 23 race scheduled for Mid-Nebraska Speedway in
Doniphan has been moved to Saturday at 7 p.m. The two race series will not
get underway on Friday in North Platte for a stop at Lincoln County Raceway.
With just three shows left, two-time defending series champion Garry Lee
Maier looks to close out the season with another crown. Maier, from
Cimarron, Kan., has a 295-point lead over Mike Peters.
This marks the second straight year for the late season Nebraska swing. Last
year at Doniphan, Maier was ninth with eventual season point runner-up J.D.
Johnson third. Maier won his fourth race of the season the following night
at North Platte, with Johnson again third.
This year, Maier is the only driver to have made all 10 features. He has
four wins, six top fives, and eight top 10s. Peters and Johnson failed to
make the feature opening night, but have each made the last nine.
Peters has been the most consistent driver this year. He has seven straight
top 10 finishes, the last six in the top five. The Wichita, Kan., pilot has
fourth-place finishes in the last four shows. His run of top 10s has moved
him to second in the standings.
Don Droud Jr., of Lincoln, Neb., had been second most of the season. He
missed the July 27 show because of a prior commitment and dropped to third
in points. Before that, he had finishes of first, ninth, and 13th.
Johnson has moved to fourth in the standings. The Goddard, Kan., hot shoe
has seven top 10 finishes in the last eight races. He has five straight top
10 finishes.

Auto racing technology accelerates
REGISTER SPOTLIGHT: TECHNOLOGY AND MOTORSPORTS
ROB GRAY
REGISTER STAFF WRITER
Cars roar, mouses click.
Iowa race tracks and drivers — from the deepest grassroots to the most high-profile levels — are increasingly finding ways to use technology to get the word out about their sport.
A growing number of racers, such as Joe Zadina of Corning, adorn their dirt cars with cameras in an effort to convey to sponsors, friends and the world - via Web sites such as YouTube - the experience of powering a stock car through Iowa's rich dirt.
"When you're sitting up in the grandstands, the view's a little different than when you're in a race car," said Zadina, who drives in the pro streets class at Adams County Speedway.
"I mounted a camera on my helmet to kind of show (car owner Ross Griffith) what it was like to be in the car."
Race tracks such as Knoxville Raceway have so embraced Internet technology that this year 40 percent of the 90,000-plus tickets sold for the Knoxville Nationals sprint-car gala were sold online.
Three years ago, that number sat at zero.
On the national stage, meanwhile, racing continues to climb the high-tech ladder.
NASCAR and the Indy Racing League offer live Webcasts of select events.
ESPN's coverage of NASCAR includes a "Draft Cam," a view that graphically illustrates how "clean" or "dirty" the air is for a car in a race.
The message for racetrack promoters and racers alike is clear: "Ignore these developments at your own peril," said Iowa Speedway vice president and general manager Craig Armstrong.

Beatrice Speedway 50th Anniversary Celebration Aug. 25
The very first race at Beatrice Speedway was August 25th 1957 with Gordy Shuck of Edgar Nebraska pulling down the checkers piloting his 1932 Plymouth equipped with a 1952 DeSoto powerplant.
Grandstand admission was well over 2,000 people that hot summer day. Adult admission was 90 cents for adults and 50 cents for kids.
Thanks from Wavelink Raceway Park
for making the Food Bank of Lincoln/LPS BackPack Program canned food drive a
BIG success. Our collection barrels were overflowing by Sunday night with
food and all of the proceeds from the grandstand (if you forgot your can and
had to pay) were donated to the Food Bank as well.
Thanks everyone for the donations and support of this much needed program in
our community. A special thanks also goes out to Chris Heater and the MMSA
for coordinating the food drive and promoting it!

Eagle 8/18 - Boston, Dover, Deterding, Kros and Miller Win Fan Appreciation
EAGLE, NEB. (August 18, 2007) - Fan Appreciation Night and Kid's Night,
sponsored by McDonald's saw the largest crowd ever at Eagle Raceway. The
stands were near capacity, with 2-mile long lines of cars waiting just to
get into the facility. The warm temperatures were made a little less
oppressive by a strong southerly breeze. And the huge crowd saw what was,
bar none, some of the very best racing of the year. There was passing,
3-wide action and thrills throughout the evening.
Leading off the program was the make-up B Feature for the Budweiser 360
Championship Sprints. Jay Russell grabbed the early lead in his #76,
followed by Tige Jensen's 71, Gage Dorr in the 17 and defending track
champion Mike Boston in the 51. On the 2nd lap Boston moved past Dorr to
snag 3rd position. On the 10th lap he got around Jensen to take over 2nd in
heavy traffic and got around Russell 5 laps later to grab 1st. On the very
next lap Rodney Droud's #2X made hard contact with the wall coming out of
the 4th turn and then rolled. Droud wasn't severely hurt, but was unable to
continue due to the damage to his sprinter. On the restart it was Boston,
Russell, Jensen, Dorr and the 96KX of Adam Gullion. 2 laps later Jeff
Griffis, who was leading the points coming into the night got around Gullion
for the 5th spot. With just 6 circuits remaining Jensen move past Russell
for 2nd. At the checkered flag it was Boston, Jensen, Russell, Dorr, Brad
Krutz in the #91 and Gullion.
"It was really a good night for us" Boston said. "We missed the set-up in
the 2nd A Feature, but we're more than happy with a 1st and a 2nd;
especially after the low we had 3 weeks ago. But, that bad night just meant
we had to have a good night to make up for it" Mike finished.
The heat races were up next on the agenda. All ran smoothly with the
exception of the 4th sprint heat race. Bobby Becker's 8B made contact with
the rear of the 3G of Bill Garrow. After a number of end-over-end flips,
Becker emerged unhurt and managed to repair his sprinter and participate in
the B Feature.
During the intermission the big bicycle giveaway was held in the infield. It
took 2 semi-trailers to hold the 262 bikes that were handed out to the kids.
This event, spearheaded by Rhonda Bryan grows bigger and bigger every
year. Last year's giveaway saw only 86 bikes passed out to the younger
crowd. But, thanks to the diligent work by Rhonda and the very generous
donations of the race crews, drivers, sponsors and many local businesses
Eagle Raceway hopes to top this year's total next season.
In the Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sport Compact B Feature Kyle Schamp took
the lead and never relinquished it. Roger Elliot's 6 was in 2nd behind Shamp
's #2K with the #18 of Maynard Kinnersley in 3rd and the 0 of Rich White in
4th. Kinnersley moved around Elliot on the 3rd lap and the #62 of Justin
Busboom took over the 4th spot. Over the next 2 circuits Busboom moved into
3rd and then 2nd. With 4 laps left Rich White got back into the 4th spot.
Kinnersley lost his transfer spot for the A Feature when, with just 2 laps
left he lost his right front tire. When the race finished it was Schamp in
1st, Busboom in 2nd, White in 3rd and Elliot in 4th.
In the B Feature for the Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds the 26Z of Mark
Gaspar moved into the lead, followed by the V45 of Rik Gropp, the 5ST of Dan
Wayman and the 57 of Brian Cudly. Cudly began dropping back through the
field with the 24X of Darren Hosick snagging 4th. With 5 laps left Gropp
snagged the lead from Gaspar. 3 laps later Chad Anderson advanced into the
3rd position and Hosick moved around Wayman to take over 4th. At the finish
it was Gropp, Gaspar, Anderson, Hosick and Wayman.
Next up the Budweiser Championship 360 Sprints returned to the track for the
1st of 2 B Features. Gary Reber in the 8R got the early lead, followed by
Jason Danley in the 82 and the 96KX of Adam Gullion. Danley waited only 3
laps before taking the point from Gary Reber. Gullion moved into 2nd on lap
4, but a yellow brought out by Trish Dover's #9T making contact with the
wall in turns 1 & 2 moved him back into 3rd. On the restart Ken Klabunde
moved his #28 into the 3rd spot. With only 5 laps left Klabunde then got
around Gary Reber for the last transfer spot. Gullion moved up into 3rd
position, finishing just 1 spot short of a transfer to the A Main.
In the 2nd Budweiser Championship 360 Sprint B Feature Eric Lutz had the
lead in his #20, followed by Brad Wright in the 27 and the 23R of Tadd
Holliman. Holliman got past Wright on the 3rd lap, passing him on the low
side of the track. From there until 5 laps left Holliman battled with Lutz,
swapping the lead back and forth until after getting into the 1st corner too
hard Holliman spun. When the race restarted it was Lutz with the lead, Jay
Russell's 76 in 2nd and Wright in 3rd. With just 2 laps left Russell moved
under and past Lutz for the lead. The finishing order was Russell and Lutz
transferring to the A, with Wright in 3rd.
The first A Feature of the evening featured the Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA
Sport Compacts. Jason Miller took the 1st position in his #77 followed by
the #60 of Thomas Lietchi, the #3 of Harry White and Elliot Halvorsen in the
#22. White got around Lietchi for 3rd on the 2nd lap and Dan Rhiley moved
past Halvorsen for 4th on the following circuit. Rhiley then passed White
for 3rd on the next lap. With 4 laps in the books Amanda Rhiley spun her
#51, brining out the yellow flag. On the restart it was Wilson, White,
Rhiley and Lietchi. Rhiley moved into the 2nd spot with 10 laps left. 4 laps
later Halvorsen moved into the 4th spot, and then 3 laps later took over 3rd
position. When the race was over Wilson took home the win, followed by
Rhiley, the 21 of Jake Sells and Lietchi in 3rd.
"This is only my 7th week in this Prelude, but after winning 4 in a row I
just want it to be 5 straight" Wilson stated. His 4 wins were at Eagle
Raceway on the 4th of August, Beatrice Speedway on the 11th and then
Junction Motor Speedway during the Nebraska Championships earlier in the
week, with tonight's win at Eagle making 4. "I really want the win at the
Nebraska Cup in 2 weeks. That would be the topper," he said. "I need to give
a big thank you to my sponsors, Exhaust Pro and Miller Construction. Also, I
need to say that without Dan Rhiley and Rich White I never would have found
this car. They're the ones who really made all this possible" he finished.
The Valentino's Pizza IMCA Hobby Stock A Main was next on the card. Chuck
Madden Jr. took the early lead in his #2X, with Don Kros' 53 in 2nd and the
22 of Nick Beckman in 3rd. There was a complete restart however, after Rob
Brown hit the front stretch wall very hard coming out of the 4th turn. After
the restart it was again Madden Jr. in 1st, Kros in 2nd, Beckman in 3rd and
the #9 of Rex Schreiner in the 4th spot. Madden Jr.'s lead was short-lived
however, as he suffered a flat right front tire with just 3 laps in the
books. This put Kros in the lead with Beckman in 2nd, Schreiner in 3rd and
Jerry Keaton's 5K in 4th. The running order remained the same at the front
of the pack until Danny Lane's #17J suffered a flat right front tire with
only 7 laps remaining. On the restart Keaton moved under Schreiner to take
over the 3rd position, and 3 laps later Shane Hiatt moved his 21H past
Schreiner also. With only 3 laps left Beckman got around Kros, only to be
passed by both Kros and Keaton on the following circuit when Beckman got out
of shape. At the checkered flag it was Kros, Keaton, Beckman and Hiatt.
"I loved it tonight, lots better than most of the nights we've had this
year," Kros stated. "Roger always puts on a great show. They move everything
right along, and don't favor 1 class over the others. Eagle's a great place
to race," he added. Kros is in his 5th year of racing, and this was
coincidently his 5th win. Don's sponsors are Kros Construction and Extra
Touch Embroidery. "I need to thank my brother Jeff also, for all the hard
work he puts into this car every week" Kros finished.
The Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds then ran their A Main. Pat Donovan
held the lead on the first lap in the #4D, with Bob Ruisinger's #7 in 2nd
and the 11X of Steve Devitt in 3rd. Chris Alcorn, defending track champion
and current points leader had advanced all the way to the 3rd spot by the
3rd lap. He then got around both Donovan and Ruisinger to take over 1st on
the ensuing circuit. On the very next lap Doug Deterding got up to the 3rd
position in the #13 with Rik Gropp's V45 in 4th. Ruisinger got around Alcorn
briefly with 10 laps left, but dropped to the 3rd spot when both Alcorn and
Deterding got past him shortly after that. With only 7 laps left Deterding
moved past Alcorn for the lead. 2 laps later Gropp moved up to the 3rd spot
behind Alcorn, only to be passed on the very next lap by Chad Anderson in
the 8C. Although Alcorn made a furious charge coming out of turns 3 & 4,
Deterding held on for his 2nd win of the season.
"I tell you what; just 3 laps more and that right rear would have grown so
big I would never have been able to turn this car" Deterding stated. "This
is the most fun I've had racing in a long, long time," he added. "But it
seems that full moons or in front of 8000 people are the only time I can
win" he joked. "I want to thank Roger and the track crew for the great
track tonight. And, I also need to thank my car owner Mike and my brother
Dave for working so I can race every week. I need to thank all my sponsors
because without them I couldn't be out here, and last of all I want to thank
all the fans for their cheers. They're what makes this whole thing fun" he
finished.
The Budweiser Championship 360 Sprints came out onto the track for the final
race of the evening. After the initial start was called back due to contact
between Josh Riggins' #14 and the 7G of Mike Gablehouse, John Klabunde moved
his #77 into 1st, with Mike Boston's #51 in 2nd, Gage Dorr's 17 in 3rd and
the #53 of 17 year-old Jack "The Gas Man" Dover in 4th. On the following lap
Boston and Dover both passed Klabunde. 5 laps later Dover put on a textbook
slide job in turns 1 & 2 to get in front of Boston. By lap #10 Dover held a
straightaway lead. Dover drove through the very heavy traffic, which had
stretched all the way around the track to finish with a ½ lap lead over
Boston at the checkers.
Jack Dover finished 3rd in points at Eagle Raceway last year, before moving
to a 410 sprint car at Knoxville Raceway this year. Despite a top finish of
6th in the 410's, Jack obviously hasn't forgotten the fast way around Eagle.
"I'm just speechless!! To win in my first time back here at Eagle, it's just
great. My folks wanted me to go to Jackson, Minnesota to race but I said
'No, I want another win at Eagle'. So, here we are" Dover said. "We'll
definitely be back for the Nebraska Cup. I can't wait!" he finished. Dover's
sponsors include Thorpe's Auto Body, Trail Performance Coatings, Northland
Motor Oils, Chase Cam, Springborg Construction Containers, Langfeldt
Overhead Door, Keizer Aluminum Wheels, 3D Auto Transport, FVP and RMS.
Be sure to come out next week as the Budweiser 360 Championship Sprints,
Valentino's Pizza IMCA Hobby Stocks, Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds and
Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sport Compacts battle out the Season's Finale
points championship.
Special thanks to Rhonda Bryan, her family and friends, and all that helped
with Kid's Night!

Roth, Hipnar, Sink & Richards Take I-80 Features
(Greenwood, Ne., 08/19/07) The NASCAR Whelen All American Series
Chase for the Championship continued Sunday night with Travis Roth, Todd
Hipnar, Josh Sink and Matt Richards picking up feature wins. There was quite
a crowd on Dodge Dealers Fan Appreciation night at the speedway.
The evening kicked off with Grand National Feature event and there were 3
Restarts before they could get a lap in. When they finally got the race
under way
Gary Leapley threaded the needle between Shawn Harker and Jacob Brown for
the early lead. Leapley would hold the lead until lap 5 when point leader
Todd
Hipnar made the pass for the lead. Hipnar would lead the rest of the way
despite a
couple of restarts that put Ron Tex Jr. right on his bumper. For Hipnar it
was his 4th
win on of the year as he stretched out his point lead a little bit. Matt
Buller finished 3rd ahead of Brad Soll and Harker.
The Pro-Modified feature saw "Iron Mike" Johnson take the early lead. Buzz
Wilson and
Matt Richards came along to challenge Johnson and it was side by side and
nose to tail
for several laps. Richards passed Wilson for 2nd on lap 13 and proceeded to
reel in Johnson. On lap 14 Richards running the high groove passed Johnson
and went on to record his first win of the year. Wilson got passed Johnson
for 2nd with Jeff Stephens and
Reece Coffee rounding out the top 5. On a restart early in the race Stephens
had a flat tire
And had to go to the pits. He came back out in 20th place and proceeded to
make his way to that 4th place finish.
Mike Mass and Brandon Wergin would battle for the early lead in the Hobby
Stock feature with Wergin in front by the end of lap 1. Wergin would hold
the lead til lap 11
when a flat tire sidelined him and Josh Sink inherited the lead. Sink said
his car was running with only 10lbs of oil pressure most of the race. After
he took the checkered flag
on his 3rd feature win his motor blew up on him. Rick Munson drove a heak of
a race in battling for the win before settling for 2nd ahead of Jesse
Sobbing, Tom Myers and
Mass.
The Late Model feature saw the Zeitner brothers Al and "Lightning Leon" on
The front row and they battled for the early lead before Leon took control.
John Nicholson passed Zeitner for the lead on lap 3 and then set sail in the
high groove of the track. Nicholson held the lead til a lap 23 restart when
Travis Roth made the pass
that earned him his 2nd feature win of the year. Nicholson held on to 2nd
ahead of Leon
Zeitner. Co-point leaders Al Humphrey and Joe Kosiski came through the pack
to
finish 4th and 6th with Al Zeitner in 5th.

Saturday Night Season Championships Decided At I-80
(Greenwood, Ne., 08/18/07) The NASCAR Whelen All American Series
Season Championship races were held Saturday night with Ron Tex Jr.,
Kortney Kosiski, Scott Carlson, Shawn Bulin, Pete Fink Jr., Kennin Colestock
And Dan Satriano taking feature wins in their respective classes.
The Pro-Stock 18 lap feature saw Jim Kruse take the early lead only to lose it
in turn 2 to Shawn Bulin. Bulin led the rest of the way for his feature win of the year.
Larry Robinson Jr. closed on him late in the race but ran out of laps and had to
settle for second ahead of Tim Podraza, Scotty Hartman and Jason Cieslik.
Bulin also won the track championship. The top 2 rookie contenders Doug Stevenson
and Nick Deal finished 7th and 8th.
The 25 lap Crate Late Model feature saw Dwane Pospisil take the early lead. But it was short lived as Brad Soll passed him on the back chute. Soll stayed in front til about 5 laps left when Ron Tex Jr. blew by him on the high side of the track and went on to record his 1st win of the season overSoll, Joe Kosiski, Jason Hobscheidt and Kenny Edwards.
Hobscheidt is the 2007 Track Champion.
For the second week in a row the Novice Crate Late Models saw another career milestone win for a young lady, Kortney Kosiski. Mike Gillespie took the early lead and held it til lap 5 when Kosiski took over. Last week’s winner Mollee Collins ended up 2nd after Kenny Bartram’s car was too light crossing the scales. Gillespie held on for 3rd ahead of Rob Kosiski, Ryan Gladwin and Lindsey Yost. Gladwin ended up winning the Track
Points Title.
The B-Modified feature saw Nick Hermsen grab the early lead. But point leader Jared
Hoefelman shot through the pack and took the lead on lap 3. Scott Carlson took 2nd on lap 7 and began to real Hoefelman in. Carlson was hooking up on the high side of the track
And passed Hoefelman with 5 to go. Carlson went on to his 7th feature win of the year but
Hoefelman, a rookie, won his first Track Championship. Harry Nixon, Hermsen and Floyd Richards rounded out the top 5 in the feature.
Dan Satriano was the only 305 Sprint Car to show up, so he won his first feature of the year against himself.
The Pro-Hornet Feature saw Pete Fink Jr. pick up his first career win over Steve McConnell, Steve England, Joe Baker and last years champion Austin Kurtzer.
Justin Soule with a 7th place finish took the track championship over Baker and England.
The Novice Hornet feature saw Kennin Colestock lead from start to finish for his 2nd win of the year. Alex Fink came on to take 2nd over Dan Rasmussen, Russell Johnson and Sarah Preble. Fink won the Track Championship.
