Boston Tops Sprints Again as Meyer Regains Point Lead

By Jason Orth

Eagle, Neb., (August 5, 2006) – Mike Boston won his sixth regular season Budweiser Championship Sprint A feature, the first time a sprint driver has won more than five races in a season since Billy Alley won five en route to his 2002 title. Mike Meyer won for the fifth time this year and got a break after Chris Alcorn couldn’t make repairs in time to return to action to retake the SoBe No Fear IMCA Modified point lead he lost just a week ago. Derick Noonan picked up his first Stereo West Auto Toys Hobby stock victory, controlling the entire 15-lap races while Doug Lyons won for the first time in the Stereo West Auto Toys Tuner division.

Boston, who also won the first of twin Eckley Memorial A features for seven total wins, ran down Rob Lipker and Kellen Love shortly after a red flag for a nasty two car flip involving Jay Jordan and Terry Holliman. Jordan’s car rolled down the front stretch, with Holliman jumping the rolling sprinter and coming down hard in turn one. Both drivers left the track on their own power, though Holliman complained of pain in his knee and ribs.

After taking the lead on lap eight, Boston dominated the rest of the race, while Lipker gave chase. In the closing laps, Boston took it easy through heavy lap traffic allowing Lipker to close to within three car lengths, but that’s as close as he would get. Boston took the checkers, followed by Lipker, a strong running Jeff Griffis, Jay Russell and the rookie Love.

Mike Meyer inherited the lead from Tracy Harr after Harr suffered a flat tire just before the midway point of the 20-lap IMCA Modified A feature in a quest to regain his point lead. Chris Alcorn, who clawed his way to the top ten after running the B feature came to a stop in an unrelated incident on the same lap and brought out the yellow flag. But, he was unable to make repairs in time for the restart and finished sixteenth.

Stacey Wilhelm made a late race charge for the lead but ran out of laps, finishing second behind Meyer. Doug Deterding has been a fixture in the top five this year, making another smooth run to third place. Raines followed in fourth, Sean Burklund was fifth.

Derick Noonan held point despite pressure from Dan Jackson and Jerry Keaton in the 15-lap Hobby Stock A feature. Noonan didn’t get fazed as he ran consistently clean laps and controlled the fast groove to take his first win at Eagle Raceway. Jackson followed in second, Keaton third. Rich Small finished fourth with Don Hall Jr. finishing the top five.

Doug Lyons ran down Tuner A feature leader Amanda Rhiley after the yellow flew for Adrian Dover as smoked poured out of her car. Kevin Kuker tried several times to make it around Lyons for the win, but couldn’t quite complete the pass and finished second. Rhiley came home third with Justin Busboom fourth and Amanda’s father, Dan strengthening his point lead with a fifth place finish.

Eagle Raceway takes Friday and Saturday off to host Monster Jam Summer Heat monster trucks and returns to racing on August 19 with Fan Appreciation night featuring five dollar adult admission.
