Speed Bowl WILL race on Sept. 17

By Mike Hughes

RED CLOUD, NE (August 30)—The Speed Bowl in Red Cloud, NE, will get in their season finale on Sunday evening, September, 17, after IMCA approved the race Wednesday.
Originally IMCA would not approve the make-up date at Red Cloud due to Lexington, NE, also rescheduling their final race on that date because of a rainout on Sunday, August 27. Since Lexington normally runs on Sunday nights, IMCA approved their make-up date and would not sanction the Red Cloud race. However, promoters at both tracks conferred and felt that very few drivers competed regularly at both tracks and both contacted IMCA. IMCA then gave approval to The Speed Bowl to race on Sept. 17, along with Lexington.
The Red Cloud finale will get underway at 6:00 p.m. with make-up features for both the IMCA Stock Cars and IMCA Modifieds to be run first. Then a complete regular race program will be run, followed by mechanics and powder puff races. Late Models will NOT be on the Sept. 17 race card.
The Cruiser feature was completed on Friday evening, August 18, and 8 laps of the 14-lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature was completed before the race was red-flagged because of rain. The hobby stock feature has been declared official as the race was past the halfway mark, and race leader Jamie Reiman of Blue Hill was declared the winner.

HOBSCHEIDT, HARTMAN, RICHARDS, KURTZER & CHRISTENSEN WINNERS IN WEEK 3 OF THE CHASE

Jim Brennan

(Greenwood, Ne., 8/26/06) The NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Race for the Chase saw repeat winners in all classes; Jason Hobscheidt, Scotty Hartman, Floyd Richards, Austin Kurtzer and Nate Christensen.

The Certified Transmission Pro-am 18 lap feature saw Rick Negrete jump to the early lead. But point leader Scotty Hartman got a good jump from his 6 th row outside start and by lap 2 he was up to second. On lap 5 Hartman took the lead with Chad Sanders and Jason Cieslik giving chase. Cieslik moved into second on lap 12 and proceeded to make this a close race. On the last lap out of turn 4 Cieslik dropped to the inside of Hartman and got right up alongside of him. But Hartman was not to be denied and powered to his 6 th win of the year and third straight in the Race for the Chase. Cieslik held on to second ahead of Sanders, Terry leveland and Nick Hermsen.

The Dodge Crate Late Model 20 lap feature saw Tony Leonardo grab the early lead with Shawn Harker right behind him. As they completed lap 1 Harker had the lead. Jason Hobscheidt started the feature on the inside of row 4 and by lap 3 he was up to 4 th . On lap 5 Hobscheidt took the lead and sped away from the rest of the field. Point leader Billy Leighton Jr. moved to second on lap 10 but could not reel in Hobscheidt. For Hobscheidt it was his 4 th win of the season. Brad Perdue grabbed third ahead of Harker, Brad Soll and Craig Preble.

The Sports Mod feature saw Larry Robinson Sr. take the early lead only to have “Fearless Floyd” Richards pass him out of turn 3. Richards maintained the lead til the bitter end picking up his 4 th feature win of the year. In doing so Richards took over the point lead by 2 over Robinson and Harry Nixon. Nixon's car had transmission problems in the heat race, so he jumped into Mike Christiansen's car and came home with a 6 th place finish. Jim Hendricks had his best finish of the year in third ahead of Jim Fritz and Lacey Tuttle.

The Tobacco Free Nebraska Pro-Hornets feature belonged to Austin Kurtzer who led from start to finish. Kurtzer had several bad weeks that saw hin drop from first to ninth in points. So with a low point average he started on the outside front row. Brandon Wergin made an attempt to stay close, but had to settle for 2nd ahead of Point leader Lindsey Yost, Kevin Stanzel and Joe McConnell.

The TFN Novice Hornet feature Deanna Wallace and Sara Doll broke out front With Wallace taking the lead in turn 2. Point leader Nate Christensen took the lead On lap 4 and cruised to his 9 th feature win. Justin Soule came on to finish 2nd Ahead of Steve McConnell, Thomas Liechti and Will McConnell.

Swenson Holds Off Humston to Win Mid-Nebr NCRA 360

From Randy Fisher: DONIPHAN, Neb. -- It took three times but Chuck Swenson found out it was a charm as he lead all 25 laps to the checker Thursday at Mid-Nebraska Speedway in the O’Reilly NCRA 360 Sprint Car Series, presented by ICM/Ethanol.

Swenson started on the outside of the first row and jumped into high gear when the green flag fell. He roared by pole sitter J.D. Johnson to take the lead going into turn one. But it was all for naught as series point leader Garry Lee Maier spun exiting turn two, which brought out the caution and sent him to the back of the field on the restart.

On the second try, Swenson again jumped into the lead. Track officials thought he jumped too quickly and the field regrouped on the false start.

But the Watertown, S.D., driver was not to be denied on the third try to get this race underway. Just as he had twice before – but this time without any cautions – Swenson powered by Johnson and into the lead, as J.D. settled into second.

Chad Humston was a fan favorite all night, hailing from nearby Giltner, Neb. He started fifth in the feature and moved up two spots on the first lap.

Rounding out the early top five were Brian Brown and Toby Chapman.

Swenson continued to pull away from Johnson and by lap five, lead by a half-straightaway.

Johnson suddenly had his hands full keeping Humston at bay for second. Humston looked low a couple of times and finally made the pass stick the following lap.

While Humston was pushing Johnson back to third, Dustin Lindquist has moved up a couple of spots into fourth ahead of Brown.

The running order stayed the same with about the same distance between the top five drivers when Swenson encountered lapped traffic on lap 12. That gave Humston a chance to move up behind the leader.

For several laps, Humston tried to slip to the inside going into the turns. But each time, Swenson would pull away exiting the turns and maintain his lead.

On the 23rd lap, Humston used the traffic to his advantage as he went by Swenson on the high side exiting turn four, or so it seemed at the time.

Just before Humston got to the start stand, the caution came out for one of the back markers, Rick Ideus, who had spun in the middle of turn four.

With the caution, scoring reverted to the last completed lap, which moved Swenson back in front of Humston for the lead on the restart.

The restart came with just three laps left around the 3/8ths-mile oval. And Swenson once again got the job done, streaking away from Humston with the green.

No one could catch Swenson the final three laps to the checker as he won for the second time this year in the NCRA 360 Sprint Car Series.

Humston held on to finish second amidst a round of applause from his fans who were present. Johnson finished third, followed by Lindquist and Brown.

“I knew Chad was there when he caught me,” Swenson said in the winner’s circle. “I was worried about that last restart.”

Humston was beaming afterwards, despite finishing second.

“Chuck showed me the door a couple of times,” he said. “I tried to jump in there but just didn’t have anything for him.”

Maier, the season point leader and defending series champion, rebounded from his first lap spin to finish ninth. Johnson, second in points, has two wins, a second, and a third in his last three races as he continues to cut into Maier’s lead with just a few races to go in the season.

Lincoln Journal Star: Tracks try the unusual to bring in new fans

BY TODD HENRICHS / Lincoln Journal Star

Roger Hadan knew he had to take some chances.

Attendance at Eagle Raceway had waned in some eyes over recent seasons, and the track’s owner said he would close the facility unless someone stepped forward to operate the track.

Hadan, Eagle’s offseason savior, had plenty of ideas of how to get fans to the racetrack on Saturday nights. Only, some of those ideas didn’t set well with long-time fans, folks he couldn’t necessarily afford to chase away while trying to drum up new business.

“They were dead set that Eagle was not to become a circus,” Hadan said this week. “But I think we’ve got to do whatever it takes to put people in the seats.”

As Eagle’s season winds down — only two points nights remain — there is no big top over the familiar dirt oval east of Lincoln. There have been some great feature races in the perennial sprint and modified divisions.

Yet 2006 might be remembered locally as the year of the gimmick...(click for full article)

Goldsmith Grabs Super Latemodel Win at I-80 Speedway

By Joey Sparano

(GREENWOOD NEB., 08/20/06) The teenage phenom Bryant Goldsmith raced from the eighth starting position to win the Dodge Super Latemodel "A" feature at the I-80 Speedway. J.C. Wyman and Ron Tex Jr. would each pick up their first feature win of the season, as Jesse Sobbing took his second win in a row on 3M night.

The 25 lap NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series "A" main event would see the #26JR of Corey Zeitner take the early lead. Zeitner would maintain the top spot, but the car on the move was the #24 of Bryant Goldsmith. Goldsmith, who started fourth row outside, would make his way up to third by lap six. He would then launch by Zeitner for the lead at the half way point. Goldsmith would race to a straightaway lead until lap 22, thats when the yellow would fly for Robbie Andersen who hit the front stretch wall. Under the yellow, the current NWRS National Points Leader Joe Kosiski headed pit side with a flat left front tire. Kosiski would come back to finish 13th. Goldsmith would survive another late race caution and go on to take his first victory at the I-80 Speedway. Scott Koskovich would have a great second place run, he would be followed by Ed Kosiski, Leon Zeitner, and Billy Leighton Jr.

The Home Pride Modified feature event would be a caution fest. The 18 lap feature would have seven yellows in the first eleven laps. During all the yellows J.C. Wyman would inherit the lead. Wyman ended up being the class of the field as he was unchallanged for the top spot. With the win, Wyman jumped from ninth in points to inside the top five. Bob Zoubek, Jerimiah Sillman, Jeremy Leiting, and Stacey Wilhelm rounded out the top five.

Ron Tex Jr. would take the lead early in the the Grand National "A" feature. The race would go 20 laps straight and Tex would take the feature win over Gary Leapley and Joey Bauer Jr. Points leader Dave Livingston finished fourth with Brad Perdue taking fifth.

The 15 lap Stereo West Auto Toys Hobby stock feature saw Ron Allen take the early lead on lap one. By lap two, 12th place starter and current points leader Jesse Sobbing would take the lead. Sobbing would then never look back as he took his fourth win of the season, and his second in a row. Sobbing would also receive the $100 Tom & Tiff's Family Restaurant bonus. Jerod Weston and Jeremy Swanson would finish second and third after they both started in the seventh row. Josh True and Tom Myers rounded out the top five.

HARTMAN MAKES IT 2 IN A ROW IN CHASE; LIVINGSTON &
NIXON RETURN TO WINNERS CIRCLE

Jim Brennan

(Greenwood, Ne., 8/19/06) The NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Race for
the Chase saw Scotty Hartman make it 2 in a row in the Pro-ams while Dave
Livingston and Harry Nixon returned to the winners circle in the Late Model
And Sports Mod classes.

The Certified Transmission Pro-am 18 lap feature saw Larry Robinson Jr. jump
out front from his outside front row start. Robinson looked like he would be heading
to the winners circle until lap 6 when he retired with a flat tire. Shawn Bulin
inherited the lead at this point. But Hartman was on the move taking over second on
lap 8 when Thad Thomson spun out. Hartman took the lead on lap 10 and then survived
a restart on lap 11 to record his 2nd straight win in the Race for the Chase and fifth
win overall. Bulin held on to 2nd ahead of Joe Feyen, Shane Bales and Terry Cleveland.
Nick Steier, Chad Sanders, Ray Dessel, Jeff Atkins and Jason Cieslik rounded out
the top 10.

The Dodge Crate Late Model 20 lap feature started out with a bang as five cars tangled
in turn 4 bringing out the red flag. It started when Todd Morgan got sideways and
collected the cars of Scott Green, Shawn Harker, Kortney Kosiski and Kenny Edwards.
Green and Harker were able to restart but the others went to the pits. When the green
Flew again Trevor Millikan jumped out to the early lead ahead of Livingston. But by
the time the first lap ended Livingston had the lead in a brand new car. But the car was
pushing in the corners and Livingston wore himself out trying to keep the car turning
left. Livingston managed to put it away after a restart on lap 17 and recorded his first win since July eighth and his 4th of the year. Dave Doll had a strong finish to come home
second ahead of Billy Leighton Jr., Ron Tex Jr. and Scott Carlson. Leighton reclaimed
the point lead as Jason Hobscheidt finished 8th.

The B-Mod feature saw Jim Hendricks grab the early lead only to lose it to Harry
Nixon in turn 3. Nixon would be challenged by Roger Harpster first and the Daryl
Weilage late. Weilage was just inside his rear quarter as the checkered flag fell.
Harpster held on to third ahead of Floyd Richards and Jim Fritz. For Nixon it was
his 7th win of the season. But Weilage took over the point lead by 1 over Nixon.

The Tobacco Free Nebraska Pro-Hornets saw Austin Kurtzer take the early lead,
but by lap 3 Cory Hutchison was challenging. Hutchison took the lead on lap 6
but lost it on the next lap to second generation driver, Joe McConnell in the M & M’s
#36. McConnell held on for his first win of the season over Jamie Spanel, Lindsey
Yost, Steve England and Travis Meyer.

The TFN Novice Hornet feature saw another McConnell brother, Steve, take the
early lead over Nathan Brown. McConnell would hold the lead til lap 6 when point
leader Nate Christensen passed him. Christensen went on to record his eighth feature
win of the year. Kelson Kurtzer closed strong to take 2nd ahead of Steve McConnell,
Brown and Will McConnell.

NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series action continues next Saturday with the Crate
Late Models, Pro-ams, B-Mods, Pro-Hornets and Novice Hornets. Hot laps are
at 6:30 with the first green flag dropping at 7. It will Cookies Food Products night
with a kids candy grab at intermission.

Eagle Raceway 8-19 Results

Larkins, Jordan, Kropp and Rhiley Eagle Winners

By Jason Orth

Eagle, Neb., (Aug. 19, 2006) – The point leaders faltered while a former champ showed he still had what it takes to win Saturday night at Eagle Raceway. Mike Boston, the sprint point leader failed to make the A feature, Mike Meyer couldn’t make it back to the track in time in the Modified A, while six-time Modified champ Kevin Larkins made a rare return visit and torched the field. Trevor Kropp won his first A feature at Eagle in the Hobby Stocks while Dan Rhiley moved closer toward a championship in the Tuners.

While Mike Boston failed to qualify from the B feature to the A, the point race in the sprint division had a chance to be blown wide open. However, second place Jeff Griffis came to a stop on lap five, while third place Ryan Roberts rolled hard on lap eight. They would finish 19th and 18th , respectively. Meanwhile, Dean Chadd began to dominate the field, extending his lead to nearly a quarter-lap until he made contact with the lapped car of Gene Ackland. Chadd spun in turn four and was hit by second-place Brad Krutz.

Jay Jordan inherited the lead and was untouchable on the fast track. Jordan crossed the flag ahead of Jack Dover, Terry Holliman, Mark Pace and Toby Chapman. Gage Dorr picked up his best finish at Eagle in sixth place.

Kevin Larkins was known for making his way through traffic quickly when he dominated the Eagle Raceway modifieds throughout the 1990s. Nothing changed as Larkins blasted through the field and took the lead by lap six. The six-time champ pulled out to a half-lap lead over Chris Alcorn, setting a new track record in the process. Larkins’ 15.316-second time on lap thirteen obliterated the 15.822 second mark turned by Jon Schwartz in 2005.

A late race yellow flag bunched the field back up, but it would make no difference as Larkins won by half a straightaway over Alcorn, Clint Homan, Terry Hurt and Tim Pickens. Point leader Mike Meyer was caught up in an opening lap crash and failed to make the call by the time the green flag flew. He would finish 20th and gave up the point lead to Alcorn. The gap between first and second now sits at five points with two shows remaining.

Trevor Kropp made a low, turn four pass stick with five laps down to take the lead from Derick Noonan in the Hobby Stock A feature. Brian Cudly charged forward and with five laps left hounded Kropp throughout each corner, but Kropp kept his cool and won by three lengths. Cudly followed in second with Noonan in third, Shane Hiatt fourth and Don Hall, Jr. fifth.

The entire ten-lap Tuner A feature was all about side-by-side races for the win. Jack Prall Jr and Jack Prall, III battled during the first half of the race, but Barry Kinnersley and point leader Dan Rhiley moved to the front and took the top two spots shortly after. Kinnersley held off Rhiley until the last lap when Rhiley pulled alongside in turn three and won by just one car length. Kinnersley, Kevin Kuker, Neil Pella and Josh Trail rounded out the top five. The Pace Lap – Monday Aug. 21

- Roger Hadan floated the idea of “racing ‘till the snow flies” Saturday night. – Yikes. While I love the thought of shooting races in October, there’s a point when everyone is at their limit. Over the past years, I’ve been a fan of REDUCING the number of shows to help cut costs. With seasons that have gone from four months to half a year and more, tons of faux touring series races and specials, how much is enough? How much can hobby racers bear financially, and how much time can they bear to devote? One good point made on the message boards is that tempers of drivers (and officials) is getting thin – anyone at Eagle Saturday night saw a prime example in the sprint heat.

- Something more positive: what a great sight to see all those bikes going away to lucky kids courtesy of Bryan Racing, Eagle Raceway and all the folks who helped out on kids night.

- The NST race at JMS seemed to go quite well, with a good crowd by all accounts. I think I was surprised at the level of attendance given the proximity to Knoxville Speedweek (as I choose to call it). Maybe the fan base out there is a little different and not all attached to sprint cars?

- The Wingless/ASCS show at I-80 was a heck of a show. That’s the best I’ve seen the track ever. Didn’t make for a ton of broadslides, but the race was intense with the winner only being in a wingless car for the fourth time. Unfortunately, it was an awful night for Mike Oliver. Anyone who hasn’t seen the damage caused by his encounter with turn four in the 305 feature should take a look. It’s a wonder he wasn’t injured.

- With the sad accident with Steve King at Knoxville, the question of steering gear has become an issue in sprint cars. Chad Fegley pointed out that he has the main shaft magnafluxed after each front end collision and has had 4 cracked shafts! Doug Lovegrove’s crash at I-80 was blamed on steering failure. This didn’t seem to be a problem a few years ago, is it time to look at the design again?

- Maybe this isn’t the way they want it, but the Eagle Raceway modified point battle between Chris Alcorn and Mike Meyer is being settled in the pits. After Alcorn failed to make it out from the pits during an A feature yellow on August 5, Meyer won the race and took back the point lead. However Saturday Meyer was unable to get his damage fixed in time after an opening lap tussle and sat out the remainder of the A feature, giving the lead back to Alcorn.

- Speaking of track champions, Kevin Larkins, the “other” 6-time Eagle Raceway Champion torched the field Saturday night at Eagle, setting the new track record in the A FEATURE – obliterating the old mark by half a second.

- There is but one race left in the 2006 season at Butler County Motorplex: the final point night with Modifieds, Late Models, IMCA Stocks, Hobbies and Hornets. With the Bivens family making it clear that BCM is for sale and all indications saying that unless a buyer is found, there will be no racing…could this be the last race for the high-banked 1/3 mile?

- There’s been some debate over whether Eagle’s Nebraska Cup should be a point show. Some feel that the fact other cars who don’t run Eagle each week would attend and mess with the norm and affect things. I can understand to a point, but in the past the Icebreaker Challenge has probably brought MORE cars, and it’s been a point show so I don’t know how this is different. I also don't know how a night when one or two new cars show up versus five or six, which is all I expect. One argument for the points show is that it would motivate cars running for points to show up. In the past few years, there’s been plenty of no-shows by guys just tired or broke, especially with the drop in purse. UPDATE, the NE Cup for Sprints has been changed to just "season finale."

Red Cloud program rain shortened

By Mike Hughes

RED CLOUD, NE (August18)—Mother nature intervened during the racing program Friday evening, August 18, at The Speed Bowl in Red Cloud, NE. After 8 laps of the 14-lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature were completed, a slow steady rained forced track officials to postpone the remainder of the program until next Friday, August 25. The make-up features for the IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Modifieds and Late Models will run first, followed by the regular race program. Powder Puff races will cap off the final night of racing action this season at Red Cloud.

At press time, track officials were uncertain about the IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Jamie Reiman of Blue Hill was leading when the program was halted.

The Cruisers did get their feature complete before the rains came. Point leaders Adam Sidlo & E.J. Kothe of Hastings passed early leaders Joe & Jacob Krone late in the race to claim their 8th win of the season at the 3/8-mile oval. The Krones finished second, followed by Josh & Vic Jacobitz. The Krones won the heat race.

Alley Aces ASCS @ I-80

Lonnie Wheatley, GREENWOOD, Neb. (August 15, 2006) – Defending American Sprint Car Series Midwest Region champion Billy Alley notched his first series win of the season by wiring the field in Tuesday night's 20-lap feature at Nebraska Raceway Park's I-80 Speedway.

Dominant all the way, Alley took the lead from the pole at the outset then survived a late caution to score his second win aboard Mark Burch's Engler Tool & Machine/Big Game Tree Stands No. 1m Wolfweld after capturing an ASCS Knoxville Nationals preliminary win in the familiar machine.

"Mark Burch always gives me really good stuff to drive," Alley explained in victory lane. "The combination between Mark and I has been kinda like a Rubik's Cube, it takes some work to get all six sides working but we're getting it there now."

Alley gunned into the lead at the drop of the green and led 16-year-old Jack Dover, Mike Chadd, Rick Ideus and ninth-starter Justin Henderson in the early stages. After the race's first caution with seven laps in the books, Dover surrendered the runner-up slot when he retired to the pit area with brake failure.

Alley again checked out, as the trio of Chadd, Ideus and Henderson intensified the battle for second by eventually racing in three-wide formation entering turn one on the 15th lap with Jeff Mitrisin hot on their heels.

A caution flew a lap later with Henderson in second behind Alley, as Chadd checked into the work area with a flat right front tire.

Following a final caution for the disabled mount of Preston Peebles II, Henderson closed to Alley's rear nerf bar with just two laps remaining. Alley was the class of the field on this night though, checking out to a comfortable 15 car-length advantage by the time the checkered flag flew.

Mitrisin battled past Henderson on the white flag lap to take the runner-up slot, with Henderson settling for the show position. Ideus crossed the stripe fourth, with rookie shoe Mark Pace rounding out the top five.

Jon Corbin claimed sixth, with Ken Klabunde, 19th-starter John Klabunde, Chadd and Gage Dorr completing the top ten.

Heat race wins were claimed by Alley, Chadd and Dover.

Ballou wins nonwing race at I-80 Speedway

BY TODD HENRICHS / Lincoln Journal Star

GREENWOOD — Robert Ballou phoned home to tell his family he was pulling the wing off his sprint car on Tuesday. But if his fourth nonwing race was any indication, he may put the wrenches away.

The Rocklin, Calif., driver put a masterful slide job on pole-sitter Bud Kaeding to take the lead on lap 14 and drove away to claim the win the Huskerland Non-Wing Nationals at I-80 Speedway.

Ballou, who ran sixth in Saturday’s D feature at the Knoxville Nationals, outperformed nonwing veterans including Kaeding, Jon Stanbrough, Levi Jones and Cory Kruseman, who came into Tuesday’s event leading the Sprint Bandit points standings.

The Bandits’ Tour ‘N Topless series moves to Wichita, Kan., tonight.

In Tuesday’s preliminary feature, reigning ASCS Midwest Region champion Billy Alley was in a class of his own. Driving the Burch Motorsports No. 1M from the pole position, Alley accumulated a full straightaway lead just seven laps in and cruised to an easy victory over fellow Knoxville Raceway regular Jeff Mitrisin.

Meanwhile, it was rough going behind Alley. Running second, Jack Dover came to a stop on a lap-seven restart, handing the runner-up spot over to Mike Chadd. Then on lap 14, Chadd squeezed into the wall in turns three and four and went to the work area with a flat tire.

With Dover’s troubles, Toby Chapman looked to be in position to clinch the Midwest Region points title with one event remaining. But running in the top 10, Chapman experienced problems that forced him to the pits on lap 11.

Unofficially, Chapman finished 17th, one spot ahead of Dover.

Tuesday’s leading finishers in the ASCS divisions:

SPRINT BANDIT 410s: 1. Robert Ballou; 2. Bud Kaeding; 3. Jon Stanbrough; 4. Levi Jones; 5.

MIDWEST REGION 360s: 1. Billy Alley; 2. Jeff Mitrisin; 3. Justin Henderson; 4. Rick Ideus; 5. Mark Pace.

Kaeding Tops NST Field at JMS

By Craig Murphy - National Sprint Tour

McCOOL JUNCTION, Neb. – After a crazy Saturday night at Knoxville, things returned to normal for the National Sprint Tour Monday night, Aug. 14 at Junction Motor Speedway.
In other words, Tim Kaeding won with Danny Lasoski and Steve Kinser close behind.

Lasoski started from pole and led early in the 30-lap main. The lead lasted until lap 15, when Kaeding trapped Lasoski in traffic to grab the lead.

“It’s sometimes better to be in second,” Lasoski said. “Tim did a good job there. He got me caught behind traffic. I wasn’t aware it was that good up high.”

Neither was Kaeding.

“I really didn’t think the top was going to be that good,” said Kaeding, who went on to claim his 12th win in the 30th race of the season. “I wanted to get some momentum up. I got lucky, because it stuck up there.”

Kaeding was glad to see Lasoski mired in traffic.

“Traffic can help out big time,” Kaeding said. “We’ve got 12 wins. Unbelievable. I just wish those two guys (Lasoski and Kinser) would have a bad night.”

As it was, both Lasoski and Kinser battled up front yet again. Kinser got by Lasoski for second on lap 20, though Lasoski regained the position for good on lap 28 while Kinser was third. Dean Jacobs posted his first top-five NST finish with a fourth, while Wayne Johnson was fifth.
Rounding out the top-10 were Jason Meyers, Shane Stewart, Kyle Hirst, Jason Solwold and Travis Rilat.

Even with the lead, Kaeding was aware it was anything but safe with Kinser breathing down his neck late.

“You can’t ever count Steve out,” Kaeding said. “That’s why he’s The King.”
Kinser, meanwhile, had his hands full both with his tires and Lasoski.

“I just didn’t make it,” Kinser said. “There’s not much to tell. They laid rubber. I killed my tires and got real loose. Again.”

Unfortunately Sunday's races rained out, but they are ready for Tuesday's Sprint show.

From Tom Gutowski, NRP GM

A big THANK YOU to everyone that gave so generously of their time, energy and sweat yesterday and also to those of you that donated the many items we needed at NRP/I-80 Speedway. Once again the racing family has shown why they are the best! Thank you all!

There will NOT be a work party needed on Saturday. Everything that we needed help with is done and now we can finish the organizing and restocking today and be ready to resume racing on Sunday.

Thank you again for all of your words of encouragement, help and generosity!

O'Reilly Sprint Bandits COMP Cams TNT – Five Nights of Dyno-Mite!

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (August 11, 2006)- Next Tuesday night, August 15, marks the first of five consecutive nights of explosive O'Reilly Sprint Bandits COMP Cams Tour 'N Topless racing action, featuring the super-charged excitement of 410-ci non-wing "Traditional" Sprint Cars.

The Second Annual Sprint Bandits TNT Midwest Swing will include events at four different tracks throughout Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri, with non-wing aces including defending TNT champion Levi Jones, Jon Stanbrough, Dave Darland, Dickie Gaines, Charles Davis, Jr., Brady Short, Bud Kaeding, Mat Neely, Jeremy Sherman, R.J. Johnson and current TNT point leader Cory Kruseman among those taking on winged stars going topless for the week such as Jesse Hockett, Travis Rilat, Larry Neighbors, Zach Chappell and Preston Peebles II among others.

In addition to the more than $85,000 up for grabs in the five feature events, another $7,350 will be doled out to the top five point earners over the handful of events with the champion taking away an extra $2,500. The runner-up will score an extra $1,500, with $1,250, $1,100 and $1,000 awarded to the third, fourth and fifth-ranked drivers, respectively.

Action kicks off with the Second Annual Huskerland Non-Wing 410 Sprint Car Nationals at Nebraska Raceway Park's I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, NE, on Tuesday night with an Open Wheel spectacular that also includes the ASCS Midwest Region as well as 305-ci Sprints. Levi Jones topped last year's inaugural edition of the event in a remarkable feature that included three and four-wide racing and slide jobs throughout.

On Wednesday night, the wingless warriors return to 81 Speedway in Wichita, KS, for the first time since 2001 when Mike Kirby topped the Walt McWhorter Memorial.

Round Three unfolds Thursday night, August 17, when the series introduces 410-ci wingless Sprint Car racing to the "Diamond of Dirt Tracks", Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO. The event will be preceded by an autograph session from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with Mat Neely's Lucas Oil Products Sprint Car on display as well.

The five-night swing culminates with the annual two-night affair at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, KS, on Friday and Saturday, with the Saturday, August 19, winner of the Ron Shuman Classic pocketing a cool $10,000. California's Bud Kaeding is the reigning winner of the Lakeside Classic after also winning in 2002, while Jesse Hockett picked off back-to-back wins in 2003 and 2004.

While the Lakeside finale offers up a $10,000 winner's share, the events at I-80 Speedway, 81 Speedway and Lucas Oil Speedway each pay a handsome $4,000 to win.

Indiana's Brady Short kicked off the 2006 season with an O'Reilly Sprint Bandits COMP Cams Tour 'N Topless win at Tampa's East Bay Raceway Park on January 31, with Cory Kruseman topping the second East Bay prelim as well as the $10,000 to win finale.

Arizona's Jerry Coons, Jr., collected $30,000 by winning Tuesday's Ultimate Challenge at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, IA. Coons has his sights set on more TNT wins as he will take in the events at I-80 Speedway, 81 Speedway and Lucas Oil Speedway.

Schriner, Schoenberger win at Red Cloud

By Mike Hughes

RED CLOUD, NE (August 11)—‘The Red Cloud Rocket’ Lonnie Schriner and Jason Schoenberger won feature races in their respective divisions in racing action Friday night, August 11, at The Speed Bowl in Red Cloud, NE.

Dwight Housh of Glen Elder, KS, led the first 8 laps of the IMCA Modified feature. However, after the third restart of the race on lap 8 for a stalled car, Schriner drove by Housh when the green flag reappeared and took the top spot. Jon Thompson moved to second by the halfway mark of the 20-lap race and hounded Schriner the second half of the race but could not make the pass and had to settle for the runner-up spot. Brandon Blochlinger finished third, followed by Tim Watts and Dusty Blake. Heat race winners were Thompson, Schriner and Housh.

Schoenberger, of Gorham, KS, led all 18 laps of the IMCA Stock Car feature. A late race caution on lap 17 when Josh Carpenter blew gave the field a chance but Schoenberger was up to the task to score his first win at the 3/8-mile oval this season. Heat two winner Geoff Jermark placed second, followed by Brett Behrends, Josh Hudson and Cory Struckhoff. Schoenberger won the other heat race.

Blue Hill’s Jamie Reiman has been the man to beat in the IMCA Hobby Stock division recently. Reiman led all 14 laps to score his third win of the season at Red Cloud, and his second in a row. Point leader Jim Buss made a challenge the last few laps but had to settle for second. Jeromy Wagner, heat two victor Jared Lewis and Mike Shriver rounded out the top five. The first heat race was won by Reiman.

Six Cruisers started the 10-lap feature but only 3 were running at the checkers in the caution plagued event. Point leaders Adam Sidlo & E.J. Kothe of Hastings took the lead at the halfway mark and went on for their seventh win of the year. Joe & Pat Hersh finished second, followed by heat race winners Joe & Jacob Krone.

F & F Construction and the Valley Bowl, both of Red Cloud, were the evening’s race sponsor and put up extra purse money for all four divisions.

Racing returns to The Speed Bowl Friday night, August 18, with the regular four divisions in competition. Race time is 8:00 p.m.

Two Lincoln drivers in Knoxville Nationals finals field

BY LINCOLN JOURNAL STAR
Friday, Aug 11, 2006 - 11:48:21 pm CDT

Two Lincoln drivers — Billy Alley and Don Droud Jr. — have secured starting spots in the $140,000-to-win A feature for the Knoxville Nationals tonight in Knoxville, Iowa.

Both Alley and Droud Jr. were fastest in time trials on their respective qualifying nights this week, performances that went a long way in securing their spots in the biggest sprint-car race of the season.

Coverage of tonight’s features will begin at 9 p.m. on SPEED (cable channel 231).

Alley, the current points leader on a weekly basis at Knoxville Raceway, will start 13th in tonight’s 24-car main event.

Droud Jr., who only secured a ride at Knoxville within the last two weeks, will start no further back than the fifth row. As one of the top 10 point-getters after Wednesday and Thursday, Droud Jr. earned a spot in Friday night’s scramble. Scramble results, combined with qualifying, determined tonight’s top 10 starting spots.

The front row is likely to include Donny Schatz and Craig Dollansky. The only former Knoxville Nationals champions currently locked into the feature are 12-time winner Steve Kinser and 1983 winner Sammy Swindell.

Kinser and Swindell will start side-by-side in row 10.

NRP Storm Damage Report

See photos of the damage here

From Tom Gutowski, NRP Gen. Manager

I want to start off by thanking everyone who has stopped by or called and offered their help and support. I’m going to describe what I saw, pretty much as I saw it when I arrived at the track at 8:15am....about 45 minutes after I got the call that the Greenwood Fire Dept. had been dispatched to the track.

First and foremost, we’re so very lucky that nobody was hurt or injured as a result of the microburst (http://www.islandnet.com/~see/weather/whys/ubrst.htm ) that the weather service said hit our facility. Copart’s security cameras recorded a large flash at approx. 3:15am, the time we figure that all of this happened.

Thankfully Doug was attending the races in Knoxville but he had headed for his usual overnight stop in Winterset, IA before heading home in the morning. If they were full he said he would have driven straight back and probably would have been in his bed when the storm hit. Thankfully, they had a room and he wasn’t inside the mobile home when it was destroyed. I had dinner with Doug tonight and he is doing well but shaken by what might have been.

Corey, who takes care of our MX facility for practices and watches over it during the week, wasn’t so lucky. He was in his trailer when the storm hit and it moved a couple of feet in two different directions but he is fine and his camper was not damaged.

Jon Schwartz’s motor home was on its side and was missing a number of front end trim and bumper cover pieces. The insides were a mess.

Steve Kosiski's camper trailer suffered much the same fate. His slick golf cart now has Doug’s trailer sitting on top of it.

The I-80 pit shack was not so lucky but it’s salvageable. It ended up in the ditch with JR’s end of the building (the pass window) half gone and Don’s end of the building (driver check-in) having all of the windows blown out. The roof shingles are a mess but the roof looks solid.

Our grandstand ticket building is destroyed as well as the building that served as Little Sunset’s pit shack. They were moved a number of feet and flattened. They are junk. (3 of the 4,000 lb concrete barriers at LSS that had a small, 4 x 8 billboard on them were flipped over and into the drainage ditch! The big steel storage container that we all thought was OK was actually laying on it’s roof! There were at least 6 cage karts and most of LSS's track equipment inside.)

The bleachers on top of the CFB&G would have ended up in turn 1 & 2 but the railing on the back side stopped it from going any further. They’re pretty bent up and basically scrap iron now.

The 5 year old plastic fence (that obviously was having problems of it’s own without this) is gone and scattered everywhere.

Other damage included many billboards, large and small, both scoreboards, the Cookies Pavilion roof and many of the picnic tables, all over the grounds.

The turn 3 wheel fence, with the big fabric billboards on them, was laid over, pulling the concrete anchors out of the ground or shattering the concrete. At least 2 of the 5/8” cables were broken!

Two of the traffic lights (turn 3 and 4), including one set of the Whelan strobe lights (turn 3), were pretty torn up. Others were turned in their mounts but not damaged (we think).

The infield concession trailer is toast and everything inside of it too. It’s about 100’ from where it should be and rolled at least 5 or 6 times during its journey. Total Performance Parts’ storage container was moved but stayed upright.

It’s amazing that the grandstands, scoring tower, VIP booth and the decks were not damaged at all! Damage on all 4 sides and nothing that we can see is really damaged that badly. Go figure.

The entire facility is without power but we hope to bring it online tomorrow once we get everything shut off so we can bring it back online one circuit breaker at a time. We’ll need to check everything to be sure it works properly.

None of the light poles show any damage but “shaken” lamps have a way of not working.

Also, when the buildings were lifted up, moved and/or destroyed, they pulled the underground electrical wiring until it snapped. Hopefully we’re not going to have a big problem there.

Enough about that – it’s time to move forward and go racing!

A big thank you to Dave Doll and Double D Excavating for bringing two portable offices and a 36’ trash container, which will go a long way in helping us get back up and running.

A big thank you also goes to Nubbin’ for his generosity with window A/C units and everyone else who gave us tips on where we might locate things or have volunteered to help with the cleanup.

Another big thank you to Steve McKee and Scott Saltzman for pitching in and getting the pit shack ½ way together. You guys are always among the first to pitch in.

I will try to call all of you tomorrow that have posted, but if you don’t hear from me by noon, please call my cell 402-350-6120. I must’ve had over 100 calls today, especially counting the insurance stuff, so it’s easy for an old guy to get lost in all of that.

Our plan is to spend Friday and Saturday cleaning up, powering up the facility and getting the necessary buildings, equipment and safety items in 100% working order and to race Sunday.

I’m sending over 70 photos to our web site guy and hope he can get them up on the web site ASAP. He is on a family emergency trip to WV so be patient.

If you have any questions, please email me at tgutowski@aol.com.

Finally, to close this long post, I want to thank each and every one of YOU, our racers and fans, AND the owners (and their families) for not giving up, for going forward, for rebuilding this facility, not only after the storm, but the efforts before the storm too.

Thank you everyone!!!

I-80 Needs your help

For those sprint car fans, and race fans in general, NRP needs your help after suffering storm damage. Friday's races at Little Sunset and Soaring Edge are canceled, as are Saturday's races. The decisions on Sunday and Tuesday's Wingless 410/ASCS show have yet to be made.

Message Board - dirtdrivers.com: "NRP is looking to purchase or rent some small office trailers to temporarily replace some of the outbuildings at the track. (The pitshack at Little Sunset is one of those that needs replacing). Also needed is a 14-18 foot office trailer (definetely not larger than 18 ft) that could be used as a front gate ticket booth.

Also needed: tables, bar stools and large window air units for the ticket trailers. If anyone is cleaning out their garage...keep us in mind! When the front gate ticket shack was destroyed, and the I-80 pit ticket shack moved 15 feet, all of the stool and tables inside were broken. (And Don & Ron's windows were busted out so now they can't close them on you!)

They also are looking for a mobile home to replace Doug's.

Cleanup will start at the track tomorrow between 9am and 10am, and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Hornet drivers: Tommy said none of the cars were turned over, and none looked physically damaged. The #19 was apparently on jacks, but is now on the ground but upright.

If you do go to the track, they are asking you to stay on the roads, and to be very careful. It is very muddy, and parts of the parking lot have been washed away. There is no power out there so there will be no lights once it gets dark."

Steve King Passes Away

Unfortunately, the worst has happened. This is from Steve's website 88king.com:

Steve passed away at 15:32 today, August 10.
He loved you all. Thank you so much for your support. Please keep our family in your prayers. Arrangement details will be posted once they have been made.

King in Critical Condition after Knoxville Crash

Sprint-car driver remains in critical condition after Knoxville accident
ROB GRAY
DES MOINES REGISTER STAFF WRITER
August 10, 2006

Sprint-car driver Steve King, who was injured in a crash during Wednesday's Knoxville Nationals, is in critical condition with a life-threatening head injury at a Des Moines hospital, officials at the hospital and track said this afternoon.

Knoxville officials earlier today erroneously said that King, of Jetmore, Kan., had died.

Ralph Capitani, race director at Knoxville Raceway, said he was given inaccurate information from a member of a pit crew when contacted by The Register.

Capitani said at 3:30 p.m. today that he did not know more specifics. A spokesperson at Mercy confirmed again that King is listed in critical condition.

Preliminary reports from Knoxville Raceway indicate the wreck involved only King and happened when a part broke, sending his No. 88 car into the Turn 3 fence during a preliminary feature.

King was taken by helicopter to Mercy late Wednesday night to undergo treatment for a brain injury, according to his Web site.

Capitani said earlier today that races would go on as scheduled.

“Our hearts, our souls, our prayers are certainly with the family,” Capitani said. “He’s a fine young man."

There have been 14 racing-related deaths at Knoxville, according to Capitani and Des Moines Register research. The most recent death was June 16, when Courtney Roger Schuur of Fridley, Minn., was killed during a sprint-car exhibition race held as part of a once-a-year “old-timers” event.

An update this morning on King’s Web site — www.88king.com — asked people to “pray specifically that God will reduce the swelling on his brain, stop any internal bleeding and start the healing process.”

King is a fourth-generation farmer who received a degree in animal sciences from Kansas State. He was the 2002 and 2003 NCRA 360 Division champion.

The 46th Knoxville Nationals are scheduled to conclude Saturday night.
