Red Cloud kicks off a new season

By Mike Hughes

RED CLOUD, NE (April 14)—A large crowd was on hand for the opening night of the 2006 race season at The Speed Bowl in Red Cloud, NE, Friday evening, April 14.

Dave Trauernicht of Beatrice used lapped traffic to his advantage to win the 20-lap IMCA Modified main event. Jason Schoenberger of Russell, KS, took the lead at the drop of the green with Trauernicht in pursuit. Late in the race as the leading duo came upon lapped traffic, Schoenberger had a lapped car pull in front of him and had to slow, allowing Trauernicht to make the winning pass. Schoenberger held on to second, followed by Greg Metz, Lonnie Schriner and Brandon Blochlinger. Heat race winners were Darrick Klima, Trauernicht, Wade Cross and Tim Watts, with Joby Hanson holding off Johnny Saathoff to the checkers in the B-main.

Jason Smidt of Minden took the lead on lap 2 of the IMCA Stock Car feature and led the remaining 18 laps to score the victory. Smidt was challenged all the way but never missed his line and took the win. Matt Streit won the race for the runner-up spot as he edged out Brett Behrends, Troy Attwood and Jason Schoenberger to the line. Cory Struckhoff, Josh Hudson, and Attwood were victorious in the three heat races.

It was a two-car race in the IMCA Hobby Stock feature as Jim Buss of Hastings was able to outrun Deshler’s Wade Wagenblast in the 12-lap race. Jamie Reiman won a three-car race for third over Delbert Selvage and Jerry Hudson. Heat race winners included Mike Shriver, Edd Huxoll, and Buss.

Guide Rock’s Ron & Kent Duffy went from third to first in the final 3 laps of the Cruiser feature to claim the win. Heat race winners Adam Sidlo & E.J. Kothe finished second, followed by Vic & Josh Jacobitz.

A candy toss was held for the kids during intermission.

Racing returns to the 3/8-mile oval Friday night, April 21. The green flag flies at 8:00 p.m.
