Leighton and Robinson Winners at I-80

By Jim Brennan

(Greenwood, Ne., 4/22/06) – The NASCAR Dodge Weekly Racing Series season opener at I-80 Speedway saw a pair of Juniors taking home first place honors; Bill Leighton Jr. in the Crate Engine Late Models and Larry Robinson Jr. in the Pro-ams.

The Crate Engine Late Models 20 lap feature had 2 race stoppages before one lap could be completed. The 2nd one saw 7 cars involved going into turn 3 with Shawn Harker and Brian Kenkel both flipping their race cars. Also involved were Trevor Millikan, Mike Wallace, Jay Burdic, Dwane Pospisil, Todd Morgan and Brad Soll. Both Harker and Kenkel's cars were destroyed, but fortunately no one was hurt. The 3rd time was the charm though as Dave Livingston grabbed the early lead with Jason Hobscheidt moving into 2nd. Bill Leighton Jr. started 7th in the feature nad by lap 3 he took over
the lead. From that point on Leighton was pretty much unstoppable as Hobscheidt settled for 2nd ahead of Ron Tex Jr., Dave Doll, Mike Merrill and Curt Drake. Heat races were won by Hobscheidt, Merrill and Tex.

The Pro-am 18 lap feature saw Tim Podraza and Scotty Hartman battle for the early lead with Podraza in front at the end of lap 1. Larry Robinson Jr. started 6th and by lap 3 he threaded the needle between Podraza and Hartman for the lead. While
Robinson pulled away from the field, Hartman, Podraza and Rick Negrete waged a spirited battle for 2nd. Hartman took over 2nd on lap 12 but could not catch Robinson and helf off a hard charging Nick Steier for 2nd. Negrete, whose car was overheating finished 5th behind Terry Cleveland. Podraza lost a battle with the 3rd turn wall and faded to a 20th place finish
with a flat tire. Heat races were won by Shane Boles, Robinson and Negrete.

The B-Modifieds only had 5 cars in attendance and Floyd Richards was trying to get his first win of the season. But with one lap left Harry Nixon passed him and recorded the win. Nixon also took the heat race win.

The Novice Hornet A-Feature saw Thomas Liechti lead the opening lap. On a lap 2 restarte Justin Soule took the lead and held it til the end of the lap when Nate Christensen took the lead. Christensen then sailed to the win over Steve
McConnell and Mollee Collins.

The Pro-Hornet A-Feature was all Perry Soule as he led from start to finish despite a couple of red flag periods for rollovers. The first one was Kevin Metcalf's car breaking an axel and flipping between turns 3 & 4. The 2nd one
saw Jamie Spanel get up on the wall out of turn 2. Neither driver was hurt. Soule went on to the win over Greg Ryba, Austin Kurtzer, Darin Hoegren and Ole Olson. Heat race victories went to Kurtzer, Ryba and Rick Havenridge. Lindsey Yost won the B-Feature.
