OMAHA, Neb. (April 17, 2006) - If the opening events of the young 2006 racing season are any indication, I-80 Speedway race fans are in for another super season of competition in 2006. Terry Phillips took home the gold in the MLRA/TORA North-South Shootout on April 1 st and Brian Brown grabbed the winner's trophy in the record setting ASCS/NCRA Spring Sizzler on April 8 th . 59 Super Late Models and 69 360 Sprint Cars took part in the two special events.
Now the speedway, part of Nebraska Raceway Park's family of race tracks, and the only NASCAR sanctioned track in Nebraska, is set to make history by hosting the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series two nights per week in 2006. Only one other NASCAR member track in the US hosts the Dodge Weekly Series more than one time week. Sunday's program competes in Division II of the Dodge Weekly Series while Saturday's program competes in Division III.
Saturday, April 22 nd kicks off the new Saturday night series with Late Models (using spec. crate engines) as the premier division of NASCAR. The always popular Certified Transmission Pro-Ams, celebrating their 23 rd year of competition, and B-Mods join the Late Models as the NASCAR sanctioned classes on Saturday nights. The Tobacco FREE Nebraska Pro and Novice Hornets round out the Saturday night lineup.
The 6 th season of the Sunday NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series at I-80 Speedway starts on Sunday April 23 rd and features the Dodge Super Late Models as the premier division with the Home Pride Pro Modifieds and newly sponsored Stereo West Auto Toys Hobby Stocks also being NASCAR sanctioned. The competitive Grand National Late Models, which include the crate engined cars from Saturday night, round out the night's competition that'll also feature Kenny Edwards, brother of Nextel Cup star Carl Edwards, as a weekly competitor at I-80 Speedway.
