Like most others, I’m stoked. For any of the issues regarding track ownership changes, class rules issues, purses, admission prices, etc. we’re still blessed with an incredible buffet to satisfy our racing appetites. There are several tracks well within an hour’s drive of Lincoln at least 7 with oval racing alone! Stocks, sprints, hornets, karts…your call! I cannot think of any time in recent memory we’ve been blessed with that kind of opportunity to enjoy our sport.
Most of us race fanatics consider the “new year” to be the opening night of racing, the calendar be damned. So why not list some New Year’s Racing Resolutions for 2006?
Here’s some suggestions:
- As a fan, I’ll recognize that no matter what class of cars we like the most, racing is racing. The more ways there are to enter the sport, the more people get involved and the more our sport grows.
- As a promoter, I will respect the fan as well as the teams. I’ll start shows on time, keep the program moving as well as I can and provide a safe, friendly, entertaining and comfortable place for racers, die-hard race fans, occasional fans, and potential new fans alike.
- Understand that the new media of the internet gives us information readily and in incredible detail. There’s always going to be ruffled feathers, but think before you speak either on the ‘net or on the phone, or in person…how important is it really? Step inside the other guy’s shoes before venting.
- Get out to a race outside my “class comfort zone.” If I’m a sprint fan, go see some of the Late Model specials taking place. If I root for stockers, go see some of the ASCS specials, an Eagle Weekly show or maybe a midget or kart race.
- Remember that for 99% of the people out there this is a HOBBY. These people have day jobs, family and other obligations. Sometimes racing has to take a back seat. I’d venture that most teams get out of racing because they don’t enjoy it any more. There’s no need to make it rougher on them.
- Realize that there are going to be some great races, and some we'd rather forget. One week may have a photo finish at the flag, and another could see a follow-the-leader dry slick parade. Keep it all in perspective, sometimes a little variety makes things interesting down the road.
