With the dog days of summer fast approaching, it was a very warm windy afternoon as Eagle Raceway, America’s Home Track kicked off “Crash Bash” sponsored by Z92.
As happened last week, there were only minor incidents in the heat races, as 3 heats were fought in each of the classes on one of the best tracks of the year.
When the sun set, it was time for the feature events of the evening.
In the Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sport Compact B Feature Jeremy Noonan grabbed the lead in his #33. The #62 of Justin Busboom, the #63 of Mike Simpson, the #31 of Chris LaChapelle and the 13J of Jared Deterding followed him. Despite several heated battles, that was the order at the finish line.
Next up was the Valentino’s Pizza IMCA Hobby Stocks A Feature. Tonight’s feature had extra meaning, thanks to a very generous $250 donation by NAPA Auto Stores, which was added to the winner’s purse.
Starting on the front row, Brad Schreiner jumped out in front in the #10. He was hotly pursued the #9 of Rex Schreiner, the #21 of Derick Noonan and the 10K of Lee Kracht. Brad’s lead was short-lived however, as Rex passed him for the lead and Noonan also passed him to take over 2nd. A couple of laps later Kracht moved past Noonan for the 2nd spot. Kracht wasn’t finished however, and took over the lead with just 6 laps down. Behind him, the running order was Rex Schreiner, Brad Schreiner and the 28B of Rick Bradley. The running order remained basically the same until with just 2 laps left Rex Schreiner suffered a flat tire and dropped backwards rapidly. At the checkered flag it was Kracht, Brad Schreiner Rick Bradley and the 3K of Jerry Keaton.
“I want to thank the fans for coming out every week and supporting Eagle Raceway. I want to give a special thanks to my wife for letting me do this, and put in all the hours working on the car. Also, my pit crew deserves a lot of credit; Lee and Brad are a great help” Kracht stated. “I need to thank my Mom and Dad, and also Preston Janzing; they’re the closest thing I have to sponsors, and they are the ones who make it possible to do this. A really big thanks to Jerry Keaton for letting me use his shop and tools; and for all the work he does on the car with me. Last of all, thanks to Jack Golder for all of his advice; he’s the greatest” Kracht added. “The track was really fast tonight. I just moved to the high line because everyone seemed to be running on the bottom. I guess I found it first and it worked for me. The high line took us to victory lane tonight” he finished.
The Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds then took to the track for their A Main event. Pat Donovan moved to the point in his 4D, followed by the 42K of Jan Korth, the 1Z of Norm Ziegenbein and the #3 of Defending track champion and current points leader Chris Alcorn who had advanced from his inside 6th row starting position. It took Alcorn only 3 laps to move around Ziegenbein, but a yellow flag put him back into 4th. On the restart Ziegenbein and Alcorn both moved up, with Ziegenbein in 2nd and Alcorn in third. The 12X of George Haney also advanced, taking over the 4th spot. With 5 laps down Donovan began dropping back through the pack quickly. This allowed Alcorn to take over the lead, followed by Korth, Ziegenbein and Haney. On the very next lap Doug Deterding moved his #13 into the 4th spot. Three more laps were in the books when Deterding got around Ziegenbein for 3rd, and the very next circuit saw him move around Korth for 2nd. As the laps began to wind down, Deterding set his sights on Alcorn; closing in on every lap. With 6 laps left Haney moved up to the 4th spot with Aaron Pella taking over 5th. Just as Deterding began to move around Alcorn in lapped traffic a yellow flag came out. On the restart Alcorn found the extra boost he needed to take home the victory. Deterding finished a close second, but couldn’t quite catch Alcorn in the waning laps.
“The track was pretty good tonight, I just wish it would have widened out a little more. We did have very few cautions tonight, because it seemed that everyone picked a line and stuck to it” Alcorn said. “When that last caution came out, and I saw Doug up beside me I figured I’d better step it up. I didn’t want to lead so many laps and then give it away right at the end” he added. “I need to thank all of my sponsors for giving me this great car” he finished. Chris’ sponsors include Dr. John’s, Heavy Equipment, Midwest Unlimited, The Alley Bar and Spanel Engines. Alcorn finished by saying “I hope Mike Cacak is doing better. I send all the best wishes to him, and I hope we can see him out here again yet this year. It’s just not the same without him”.
The final A Feature of the evening was the Budweiser Championship 360 Sprint cars. When the green flag flew there was a melee on the front stretch, bottling up numerous cars. Defending track champion and current points leader Mike Boston’s #51 suffered front-end damage, sending him to the pits. Unfortunately, his front end collapsed as he was heading to his trailer. He was unable to continue. On the restart there again was a fracas on the front stretch as the cars came to the flag stand at the end of the first lap. This time the 45 of Jeff Lowery and the #32 of Chris Roseland went to the pits. Roseland was able to make repairs and return to the track, but Lowery’s evening was over. On this restart Tadd Holliman jumped out to the lead, and by the time 5 laps were over he had a straightaway lead on 2nd place Gage Dorr in the #17. Behind Dorr it was the 2X of past track champion Rodney Droud and Tige Jensen in the #71. With 6 laps down Droud moved around Dorr into 2nd position, and 3 laps later Jensen also got around Dorr to garner 3rd. With 11 laps left Dorr spun in turn 1; this moved the14G of Gene Ackland into the 4th position. On the second lap after the restart Jensen lost part of the right side exhaust from his engine and was forced to go to the pits. This moved Ackland into 3rd with Jeff Griffis in the #3 in 4th. There were several more restarts, including one when John Klabunde rolled his #77 between turns 1 and 2 with 7 laps left. Each restart saw Holliman hold and even lengthen his lead, only to have it negated by a caution. With just 2 laps left Ackland was forced into the infield, but returned to the track. This moved Griffis up to the #4 spot. Although Droud made several attempts to catch Holliman, Tadd took the checkers in first.
Tadd Holliman is in his 10th year of driving sprints, all of them at Eagle Raceway; but this is only his 2nd A Feature win. His last victory was in 2002. Although he normally drives sprint cars, he also runs a midget every year at the Chili Bowl in Tulsa Oklahoma during the winter. “I want to thank Eldon Rhoten for putting these cars together for my father and I. It was especially great winning tonight because it meant I finished in front of my dad” Holliman said with a big grin. “The track was great tonight. I never lifted the whole way around the track. I need to thank my sponsors, Holliman Auto Supply, Pepsi and NAPA for allowing me to race out here” he added. “It’s really great to win at Eagle, because every week we have at least 20 really good cars and they’re all capable of winning any night,” he stated. “I need to thank my pit crew; Darren, Eldon, Dan and Bud. I also want to thank my wife for putting up with me and my racing habit,” he said. “The last thing I want to say is that this win is dedicated to Mike Cacak. We’re all thinking of you Mike, and hoping that you keep improving” he finished.
Next up at Eagle Raceway is a Tuesday night special event, “Modified Madness” featuring the USMTS Modifieds and the Valentino’s Pizza IMCA Hobby Stocks. Adult admission is $15, youths (6-13) are only $5 and 5 and under are free.
Then, next Saturday evening, July 21st is Heidelberg’s Sports Bar present “Hall of Fame Night”. On the track will be the ASCS Sprint Series, accompanied by the Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds, Valentino’s Pizza IMCA Hobby Stocks and the Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sport Compacts.
