Hall of Fame Night at Eagle Raceway, presented by Heidelberg's Sports
Bar saw a large crowd, and plenty of action on the high-banked 1/3 mile
track. There was 3 and 4-wide racing in all the heats.
The American Sprint Car Series (ASCS) sprints invaded the track for the
first time in quite awhile; bringing 8 of their best and a couple of
Eagle alumni to do battle with the local 360 drivers. The local drivers
stood up well to the test; winning all 3 heat races, the ASCS Fast Dash
and the A Feature.
After all of the heats were run in the 4 classes, the ASCS Fast Dash was
first up in the main events. In the Dash which would determine the
starting line-up for the A Feature Mike Boston jumped to the early lead
in his #51, followed by a pair of ASCS regulars with the 4J of Lee Grosz
in 2nd and the 5X of Dave Glennon close behind in the third spot. That
was the finishing order.
Next on the track was the Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sport Compact B
Feature. Leading the early going was the #18 of Maynard Kinnersley with
the 18R of Ron Frank in 2nd, the 24 of Mike Rice in 3rd and Jason
Tadlock's #99 in 4th. The running order stayed the same until 3 laps to
go, despite fierce competition farther back in the running order. At
that time Neil Pella drove his 3N around Tadlock to move Tadlock to 5th.
On the very last lap Pella went very high, allowing both Tadlock and the
#31 of Chris LaChappelle to pass him.
The ASCS sprint B Feature was led by the #5 of Eric Lutz, with Toby
Chapman's 84 in 2nd, Jay Jordan's #19J in 3rd and the 21 of ASCS driver
Brent Vonk in 4th. They stayed there until with just 5 laps to go Vonk
hit the wall hard in turn 1 collecting the 3R of Cory Rawstern. Just
prior to the red flag flying, Lutz blew his engine going down the
backstretch. That changed the running order with Chapman in the lead
followed by Jordan, the 24B of Frank Galusha and the 96KX of Adam
Gullion. Galusha and Gullion waged a ferocious battle to the checkers
with Galusha holding on to 3rd, barely finishing ahead of the 96KX.
In the Stereo West Auto Toys A Main event Jeremy Noonan moved out front
in his #33, with the 28 of Richard Meyers and the 21 of Jake Sells right
behind. On the 3rd circuit Jack Prall IV hit the turn 1 wall very hard
in his #45, then slid back across the track right in front of Amanda
Rhiley's 51. Rhiley then struck Prall IV, forcing both cars to retire
for the evening. On the restart Sells moved around Meyers, as did Kyle
Schamp in the #2K. On lap 5 Jack Prall III in his #44 racer moved up
into the #4 spot. With just 8 laps left Sells moved around Noonan for
the lead, with Schamp following him into second position on the very
next lap. Prall III moved around Schamp for a short time before getting
out of shape and falling back. With just 6 laps remaining Dan Rhiley's
steering wheel came loose, causing him to run head-on into the wall
coming out of turn 4. That made the running order Sells, Schamp, Noonan
and Prall III. On the restart Schamp got around Sells to grab the point,
but Noonan slipped coming out of turn 4 and Rhiley made contact spinning
him out. Noonan was forced to go to the pits and Rhiley was moved to the
rear of the field for rough driving. On the restart Sells retook his
place at the front of the field and held on for the victory with Schamp
in 2nd, the #62 of Justin Busboom in 3rd and the 18R of Ron Frank in 4th.
Jake Sells is in his first year ever racing, and tonight gave him both
his very first heat race win and first ever A Feature victory. "I want
to thank my family and crew for all their help" Sells said. "My 10 week
old daughter Molly is in the hospital, and I really almost didn't come
out; but my wife said it was okay and I'm glad I did. I want to dedicate
this win to Molly," he added. "I need to thank my 2 other children
Nicolas and Sydney for rooting for me all year" he finished. Sells'
sponsors are Kinnersley Grading and General Siding.
Next on the lineup was the Valentino's Pizza IMCA Hobby Stock Feature.
Dan Jackson took the lead in his #98, followed by the #93 of Thorn Marsh
and Don Hall Jr. in the 92. On just the 2nd lap Nick Beckman in the 22
shot around Hall Jr. and Marsh for 2nd and Casey Moyer advanced his 38C
to 3rd on the very next lap. The next time around Beckman grabbed the
lead from Jackson only to be re-passed by both Jackson and Moyer the
next lap. Following Moyer into the 4th spot on the following lap was
Rick Bradley's #28B. With 8 laps left Beckman got around Bradley and
moved under Moyer for 2nd. Shortly after Beckman got severely out of
shape and dove into and out of the infield. That made the running order
Jackson, Moyer, J.R. Macku in the 1R and Bradley. As the pack came down
to take the white flag Moyer got sideways coming out of turn #4 and was
struck and spun by Macku. Macku was moved back 4 spots for the contact.
At the checkers it was Jackson, Bradley, the 3K of Jerry Keaton and Rick
Munson in the M70.
Dan said that this was his 5th year of racing full-time, but his first
feature win. "I want to thank my wife and kids. After a heck of a year,
including almost totaling the car the very first night we got it back
together and finally made it hook up" he stated. "I also want to thank
the fans, because without them we couldn't do this," he added. Dan
finished the interview by saying "The track was really good for us
tonight, with the top side really grabbing ahold in the feature". Dan's
sponsors include 92 Motorsports, Richard's Machine, Andersen Overhead
Doors, Arbonne International, Bob Payne Lawn Service & Landscaping,
Extreme Motorsports Race Signs and Allied Tire & Oil Supply.
Between the feature events some of the "older" drivers returned to the
track in IMCA Sport Compacts for a 5-lap feature race of their own. Ed
Bowes managed to hold off Bernie Bryan and Regan Kitchen to take home
his first win in a few years. All 5 drivers who participated were
familiar names to all of those who attended Eagle Raceway and Midwest
Speedway "back in the day".
The Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds then came out for their main
event. Jerry Trejo held on from the pole for the lead in his 4t, with
the 12X of George Haney in 2nd and Dan Wayman's 5ST in third. By the 2nd
lap defending track champion and current points leader Chris Alcorn had
advanced all the way to 4th. On the same lap Haney and Wayman both
passed Trejo for 1st and 2nd positions. After the leaders passed the
flag stand Nic Bonney struck the turn 4 wall hard, brining out the
caution flag. After the restart Alcorn moved into 3rd place around Trejo
on the backstretch and then into 2nd on the following lap around Wayman.
From there to the finish Alcorn battled fiercely with Haney. Doug
Deterding got around to move into the 4th spot with 8 laps left. Alcorn
tried every trick in the book, and finally succeeded in passing Haney
with just 3 laps remaining. At the finish it was Alcorn, Haney, Wayman
and Deterding.
Chris began his interview by saying "The track was great tonight; the
top, middle and bottom…you could race anywhere. I've been telling
everyone that if Roger and his crew keep improving the racing surface
the way that they have been the other cars will start coming back. It's
fine to have it tacky once in awhile, but a slick track slows everybody
down and makes a better race for the fans. I probably slit my own throat
by saying that, because it makes it hard to move up from the back.
Luckily racing 2 or 3 times a week like I do keeps you sharp". "George
Haney is a great driver and racer. I didn't think there was any way I
could get past him, and if things hadn't happened exactly the way that
they did I probably wouldn't have won" he finished.
Last came the Main Event of the evening, the ASCS A Feature. Mike
Boston's early lead in the #51 was short-lived as Lee Grosz spun in
turns 1 & 2, coming to a rest facing the field as they maneuvered safely
around him. That moved the #17 of Gage Dorr to the outside of row #1 and
the 5X of Dave Glennon inside of row #2. On the restart Boston's lead
was again negated when Glennon lost power and slowed to a stop. The
resulting back-up of cars caused the 19J of Jay Jordan and another car
to get together. Despite numerous trips to the pits and back to the
track Glennon's engine woes forced him to retire eventually. After yet
another restart Boston took the lead again with the #23 of Terry
Holliman in 2nd, the 71 of Tige Jensen in 3rd and the 35 of Trevor
Grossenbacher in 4th place. On the 2nd circuit Lee Grosz moved around
Grossenbacher for 4th and then around Jensen for 3rd on the 3rd lap. He
then got around Holliman for 2nd as Holliman began to drop back through
the field. Boston began moving away from the field to nearly a ½ track
lead, but just as he was beginning to have to work his way through
lapped traffic a caution flew when Ken Klabunde flipped his #28 sprinter
after hard contact with the turn 1 wall. At that time the order was
Boston, Jeff Lowery in the #45, Jensen and the 76 of Jay Russell. On the
15th lap Russell got around Jensen for 3rd and with 7 laps remaining
Chuck Swenson moved into the 4th spot around Jensen. With just 4 laps
left Grosz dropped back to the 5th position. At the checkers it was
Boston, Jeff Lowery, Russell and Swenson being the top ASCS regular in
fourth.
"This was a good run for us. It made up a little for last week when we
got taken out of the race when our front end collapsed while trying to
get to our trailer to make repairs. I just hope we can keep going good
like this" Boston said. "I'm really not worried about losing the points
lead. We're here to win races, and the points will take care of
themselves" he added. Mike's sponsors include Lincoln Drywall Service,
Eckley Racing Engines, Vision Sports, Trade Center Automotive, Bob Payne
Lawn Service & Landscaping, Crete Auto Service and One Eyed Dog Saloon.
Next week be sure to attend McDonalds Junior Fan Club Night.
