Eagle Raceway: Droud, Alcorn, Small, and Rhiley Beat the Rain

From Eagle Raceway:

Despite a reported 3 inches of rain on Friday, coupled with off and on
rain showers throughout the afternoon, Student Breakout Night presented
by Stereo West Auto Toys brought a really good crowd out to America's
Race Track Eagle Raceway to see the return of a regular wingless sprint
show to the high banks for the first time in recent memory.

A rain shower just as hot laps were running put the evening's
festivities in jeopardy, but the Eagle track prep staff saved the day
along with the dedicated racers who remained on the track long enough to
bring the racing surface back.

Even with that slight delay, racing kicked off at 7 P.M. First up were 2
heats of the Bud Light Wingless 360 sprints. The month-long wait after a
rainout on the first attempt with the class was quickly forgotten.
Drivers from as far away as Phoenix, Arizona and Minnesota raced
alongside local sprint car pilots in a long awaited return to Eagle's past.

There was plenty of excitement in the other classes also, including a
breathtaking series of rolls by the 11AA of Doctor Ed Raines in the 3rd
heat of the Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds. The 00 of Barry
Kinnersley also silenced the crowd as he nearly duplicated Raines' rolls
just past the flag stand on the 4th lap of the Stereo West Auto Toys
IMCA Sport Compact B Feature. Thankfully, both drivers walked away; with
Kinnersley's car being driven back to his pit stall.

The first A-Main event saw the Bud Light Wingless 360 Sprints on the
track. A local celebrity, Don Droud Jr. in the family-owned #2, jumped
from his outside front row position into the lead followed by the 57 of
Rik Forbes. As the race progressed, he stretched his advantage to nearly
a half-lap cushion. He kept that advantage until Jeff Lowrey's #45 spun
to the infield with only 5 laps left. Droud again jumped ahead of his
competitors and won by nearly a straightaway.

"This was really cool" Droud Jr. stated. "I wish we could run the
wingless sprints more often than just once a month. I want to tell Roger
thank you for giving us this chance," he added. "I am so excited right
now!" he finished. Droud Jr.'s sponsors include Schmeiding concrete,
Hoppe's Hauling, Erickson Chiropractic and Lincoln Drywall. "I do want
to thank my dad, and a special thank you to my sisters; Monica and Dawn
for their support".

In the Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modified A Feature, the opening laps
saw Dylan Smith in the 95 at the point, followed by Tom Spanel in the 3T
and Dan Wayman's 5ST. With 8 laps gone, Rik Gropp moved into 3rd only to
be passed by the #3 of Chris Alcorn with 9 laps remaining. Reigning
points champion Alcorn then advanced to 2nd 2 laps later, moving Spanel
to third. With just 2 laps left, Smith got trapped behind the lapped #8C
of Chad Anderson. This gave Alcorn the break he needed to jump into the
lead and hold on for the victory, keeping him atop the points standings
for another week.

"I had serious doubts about being able to pass Dylan tonight. He was
really good where I was bad, and without the lapped traffic I could
never have made it" Alcorn said. "It was great to finally get into the A
through our heat, although we did get some minor front-end damage. I
really needed to find some more speed from what we had in our heat," he
added. "It was a really smooth track tonight. A little soft in places,
but with the rain, there's just not much that can be done. Roger's
definitely getting there, and hopefully it will stop raining so we can
get the track we know we can" he finished.

The Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sport Compact main event saw Mike
Simpson's #63 in front, then Jason Tadlock's 99 and Joey Danley in the
14. But, with 16 laps left, Dan Rhiley had already advanced to third in
his 2 Men and a Shop #2. It took Dan only 2 laps to move into second
position behind Simpson. The two battled for the next 9 laps, before
Rhiley managed to make the pass for the lead. Just 3 laps later, with 2
laps left the 2K of Kyle Schamp advanced to 2nd. The rest of the event
was a tremendous battle between Rhiley and Schamp, with Rhiley winning
by the slimmest of margins at the flag stand.

In the Valentino's IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature, Derick Noonan led in his
#21 with Daniel Jackson's 98 and the 38C of Casey Moyer close on his
rear bumper. Moyer moved into second with 12 to go, and into the lead
the following lap. 2 laps later Jackson was spun by the S53 of Scott
Robinson, allowing the 42 of Rob Brown to move into third position
followed by Rich Small in the 11X. On the restart, Brown jumped into
second and Small took over third. The following lap Small vaulted into
the lead, followed by Brown, but a yellow flag negated both drivers'
advancements. The restart saw Brown and Small in first and second,
followed by the 92 of Don Hall Jr. and Justin Wulf's 86. Three laps
later, Small overtook Brown, and Hall Jr. was forced to drop out of the
competition. The racing order remained unchanged until the last lap when
Wulf moved into second place. This was Small's first victory this year,
after having won 4 times last year.

"This was great" Small stated. "The first time in 4 weeks we didn't get
a flat tire. Definitely the best track this year by far" he added. "You
have to enjoy each and every win here at Eagle, because no win is easy
with the level of competition we have here. I really love racing with
all of these guys" Small said. Rich's sponsors include Front Runner Fab,
Triple H Farms, M'Credible Gun Dogs and Dave Dubas. "I also want to
thank everyone who's helped us out this year, and I can't wait to race
again next week" he finished.

Remember that next week sees 2 fabulous nights of racing; kicked off on
Friday with the "Back Row Challenge" featuring the Budweiser 360
Championship Sprints, the WDRL Late Models and the Stereo West Auto Toys
IMCA Sport compacts.

Then, Saturday night sees the return of the renowned World of Outlaws
for it's only appearance at Eagle Raceway this year. Also racing will be
the Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds and the Valentino's Hobby Stocks.
