by Randy Lawrence, NARHoF Media Director

LINCOLN, Neb. (Sept. 11, 2006) - 1983 Indianapolis 500 winner Tom Sneva will be the guest speaker at the 2006 Nebraska Auto Racing Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Oct. 13. Nicknamed 'The Gasman,' Sneva won the pole position for the Indianapolis 500-mile race three times (1977-78, 1984). In 1977 he became the first driver to qualify for the Indianapolis 500 at over 200 mph, and in 1984 was the first driver to qualify at over 210 mph.

Sneva suffered one of the most famous crashes at Indianapolis during the 1975 race. After touching wheels with Eldon Rasmussen, Sneva’s car flipped up and into the catch fence, tearing his car in half. He walked away with only minor burns. Seva retired after the 1992 Indianapolis 500 with 13 career IndyCar wins and 14 poles. He was inducted in the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2005.

The 2006 Nebraska Auto Racing Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony & Banquet will be held on Friday, Oct. 13, at the Fireman’s Hall at the Speedway Motors complex in Lincoln, Neb. The 2006 inductees are Clyde Baker, Jack Beck, Gene Kidder, Charlie Martin, Abe Slusky and Kent Tucker.
