RED CLOUD, NE (September 17)—The Speed Bowl in Red Cloud, NE, wrapped up the 2006 racing season on Sunday evening, September 17. Make-up features for the IMCA Stock Cars and IMCA Modifieds were ran from a previous rainout, followed by a complete race program.
In the make-up IMCA Stock Car feature, Lance Borgman of Beatrice won a drag race with Jason McCartney of Smith Center, KS, out of turn 4 on the final lap to pick up the win. McCartney led the whole race but lost out at the wire and had to settle for second. Chad Wulf was third, followed by Josh Hudson and Matt Streit.
Beatrice’s Jordan Grabouski took the lead from Brian Calhoon on lap 14 of the 18-lap make-up IMCA Modified feature to earn his second win of the season at Red Cloud. Calhoon held on for second, followed by Lonnie Schriner, Clint Homan and Joby Hanson.
Adam Sidlo & E.J. Kothe of Hastings led all 8 laps of the Cruiser feature to pick up their 9th win of the year and the track championship. Ron & Kent Duffy finished second in the feature race, followed by Joe & Jacob Krone.
Jim Buss of Hastings took the lead at the halfway mark of the 12-lap IMCA Hobby Stock feature from early leader Rocky Zimmerman of Ayr and appeared to be heading off for his 8th win of the season. But Buss broke on lap 9, giving the lead back to Zimmerman who went on to record his second feature win. Joe McDole, Jerry Hudson, Mike Shriver and Jamie Reiman rounded out the top five. Buss had a sizeable point lead though and won the points title. Heat race winners were McDole and Zimmerman.
Eric Rempel of Palmyra took the lead from Chad Wulf on lap 2 of the 14-lap IMCA Stock Car feature and drove away to the checkers. Heat one winner Cory Struckhoff finished second, followed by second heat winner Jason McCartney, Matt Streit and Ron Olson. Josh Hudson of Kensington was crowned the points champion, securing the title in the make-up feature earlier in the night.
All eyes were on Red Cloud’s Lonnie Schriner and Tim Watts of Beloit, KS, in the IMCA Modified feature as only four points separated the two at the start of the race. Schriner grabbed the lead from Lonnie Veteto on lap 4 of the 20-lap race and was not to be denied as he drove away for his 4th win of the season and the track championship. Veteto held on to the runner-up spot, followed by Dusty Blake, Jason Schoenberger and Clint Homan. Blake, Schriner and Watts won the three heat races.
Mechanics and Powder Puff races completed the final race program.
Track officials would like to thank all the track sponsors, track personnel, racers and fans for their support during the 2006 season.
