By Mike Hughes

RED CLOUD, NE (September 23)—The Speed Bowl in Red Cloud, NE, wrapped up the 2007 racing season on Sunday evening, September 23, with its final night of racing. This was a make-up race from an August 24th rainout.

‘The Red Cloud Rocket’ Lonnie Schriner and Jon Thompson dominated in the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature. Schriner took the lead at the drop of the green with Thompson in tow. Thompson took the lead on lap 2, but Schriner regained the lead on lap 5. The duo sailed around the 3/8-mile oval, lapping half of the 16-car field enroute to the checkers. Schriner scored his ninth win of the season and the track championship. Thompson was second, with Scott Smith a distant third. Tim Watts and Lance Borgman rounded out the top five. Heat race winners were Jim Pearce and Watts.

Jason Smidt of Minden won the IMCA Stock Car feature in a close race with Jason McCartney and Wayne Walker. Smidt led the opening lap, but was passed by McCartney on lap 2. The lone caution flew on lap 6 when Matt Streit and track champion Brett Behrends of Webber, KS, tangled, eliminating both cars. McCartney led the field back to green, but Smidt regained the top spot on lap 12 and held on to the checkers. McCartney, Walker, Shane Stout and Brant Beam completed the top five. Streit and Walker won the two heat races.

Ricky Runnion of Phillipsburg, KS, led all 15-laps of the caution filled IMCA Hobby Stock feature to score his first ever feature win. Heat one winner Joe McDole finished in the runner-up spot, followed by track champion Jim Buss of Blue Hill. Rocky Zimmerman finished fourth and Mike Shriver fifth. Jared Lewis won the other heat race.

Curtis Craig & Emile Schamp of Smith Center was a double winner on the night as they won the Cruiser heat race, then led all 10 laps of the feature race to claim the checkers. Drew & Ken Barry finished second, followed by track champions Adam Sidlo & E.J. Kothe of Hastings.
