Jim Brennan

(Greenwood, Ne., 09/22/07) Over 200 cars descended on I-80 Speedway for the
opening night of the Cornhusker Classic on Saturday night. The featured
class was the NCRA/TORA Super Late Models and John Hampel came away with his
first feature win of the year in one of the biggest races on the schedule.

By virtue of the most passing points collected in the heat races, Kelly Boen
and John Anderson sat on the front row for the 35 lap feature event. And
after an early battle Anderson claimed the lead by the end of lap 1. Chris
Spieker passed Boen for 2nd on lap 2
And Hampel was in 3rd by lap 5. Hampel moved up to 2nd on lap 7 and set out
to catch Anderson. Anderson and Hampel opened up a quarter of a lap
advantage over the rest of the field and started threading there way through
lapped traffic. Finally Hampel caught up to Anderson and took the lead with
3 laps left as Anderson's motor started popping and cracking. Anderson held
on to 2nd ahead of Bryant Goldsmith, Al Humphrey, Leon Zeitner, Boen, Chris
Spieker and Joe Kosiski. Delbert Smith and Billy Leighton Jr. rounded out
the top 10. After winning consolation races Al Zeitner and Mike Collins
