From Gary Dominguez

After many calls, and e-mails from concerned members of the racing family, we are going to try again to see if we can get a good idea on the level of interest for a sponsorship seminar tentatively set for Saturday, October 20. Location, time and cost is still pending. If we can get a minimum of 25 registrations, we will be able to proceed.

Editorial: Survival Through Quality

"The first lesson of economics is scarcity: There is never enough of anything to satisfy all those who want it. The first lesson of politics is to disregard the first lesson of economics." - Thomas Sowell

We're in an age of the "lowest common denominator" in racing. Instead of finding ways to help people obtain the means, or even the desire for the type of racing they want to compete in, promoters, sanctioning bodies and even racers instead continue to lower the bar for under the silly notion they're helping the sport.

Just like Chinese toys, what price is being paid for this trend? Maybe we're seeing a dumbed-down program or at its worst, an unsafe one.

I will never fault anyone trying their hardest, even if all they can manage is a go-cart ride in the backyard. However, they're in the minority. There are far more talkers than doers and they're cheapening the ranks.

People worry about the ending of tracks, about the end of certain classes. People clamor for rules changes, purse increases, class creation...all things that require no work of themselves.

While there is some responsibility of the promoters and sanctioning bodies, how much has the racer tried on their own? How many low-cost ways have the racers tried to gain sponsorship, make connections, network?

There's no meeting in the middle!

One person presented an opportunity for people to find the means to compete. Gary Dominguez put on a sponsorship seminar last season to teach and guide racers on how to obtain sponsors. It seemed to pay off for Jay Russell's bunch. This year Gary offered the sponsorship seminar again, but canceled due to lack of interest.

He was offering this for little but their time and an email. That's it. Few takers.

But there's no shortage of people sitting with beer in hand and keyboard in front of them for bitching and typing more than what it would have taken to attend the seminar. Instead, they hope someone else will take care of the problem. The promoter should pay more, or add more classes, the sanctioning body should cut costs or add another class and so on and so on.

Maybe someone could attend a FREE seminar. But no...instead we have to create yet another class that is slower, more boring, and likely more dangerous than the last one.

Instead of working to provide a path to improvement, tracks and sanctions keep lowering the bar, sure to get the back-gate revenues and license fees. It doesn't matter. They still think they can "make it up in volume." As I said before, there isn't enough back gate money to be made to pay for modern tracks and what it takes to compete in today's entertainment business.

Entry level racing is just that - entry level. Sooner or later one would think that a person would want to move up and ahead. Otherwise it gets boring and you know what, as much as pee-wee football is fun to watch if your kid or relative is playing, nobody's filling up 50,000 seat stadiums to see it.

Nobody's there to see the opening act, the Junior Varsity game, the entry-level class. What puts butts in the seats - what grows the track to allow for more purses and more fans and more races is quality, regardless of what class that may be.

It's been said that we have to grow the sport and make it more appealing to fans. So why do promoters keep rolling out hamburger and telling fans it's steak? And why does the racing public gladly eat it?

Let the entry-level be the raw ingredients - they're the salt and pepper, the flour and butter - absolutely necessary but not enough on their own. The final recipe demands effort and willingness to accept that it's not going to come fast. Would you go to a nice restaurant and accept a Swanson TV dinner?

Instead of setting goals higher, they ask promoters to put on shows paying ridiculous purses...purses higher than most premier classes see all year. We enable the entry-level to be content, if not prosper at the expense of the overall program which will die when they lose fan interest. It's like Welfare for racing.

Maybe it's time to demand some reform.

Who really benefits here by letting people languish in entry-level classes? I've grown tired of the watching the politics and game playing between promoters, the cries of "elitism" against people who aren't satisfied and have the stones to say something. I'm tired of the ridiculous notion that people who aren't content with the state of the sport are hurting it. I'm tired of the gladhanding politician/promoter telling us we should be glad to have what we do. Are we content to pay while they just try to drink as much as they can from a drying well? Why not find another source of water?

Nobody wants racing to die. Nobody is trying to kill it. But if we accept the poor product, we aren't saving the sport, we're just delaying the inevitable. It will die. All we do is prolong the suffering and disgust people so much that nobody will be sorry when it's gone, nor be in any hurry to bring it back.

I-80 Cornhusker Classic Night 2

Jim Brennan

(Greenwood, Ne., 09/23/07) 50 new cars pushed the 2 day total to over 280
cars for the Cornhusker Classic weekend. Feature winners on night 2 included
Chris Spieker, Kyle Berck, Marty Steinbach, Scott Carlson, Kortney Kosiski,
Kennin Colestock, Pete Fink Jr.,
Dan "The Man" Mueller and Tom Myers.

The Modified 30 lap feature saw Mueller wrestle the early lead away from
Mark Wyman. Clint Homan was the first to challenge Mueller, but ended up
giving way to Robert Brinkman on lap 9. Brinkman could not overtake Mueller
and ended up the 2nd place car. Johnny Saathoff and Reece Coffee had to use
the last chance races to get in the feature and both had great runs. After
starting in the 9th row Reece finished third and Saathoff finished 4th ahead
of Greg Metz.

In the IMCA/USRA/I-80 Late Model feature Kyle Berck started on the outside
front row and charged to the lead at the drop of the green flag. Chris
Spieker started 6th and moved into 2nd on lap 2. From there it was Berck and
Spieker stretching their advantage over the rest of the field. Lapped cars
were Berck's undoing as Spieker chased him down and took the lead on the
white flag lap. At the finish it was Spieker, Berck, Al Humphrey, Leon
Zeitner and Jason O'Brein as the top 5. Jay Stewart headed the rest of the
top 10.

The Grand National feature saw Shawn Harker jump to the early lead with Kyle
Berck, driving Ron Dake's #33z, moving to 2nd by the end of lap 1. Berck
took the lead on lap 7 after a side by side battle with Harker. Ron Tex
closed fast to take 2nd away from Harker.
Jason Hobscheidt, Dave Livingston and Al Humphrey rounded out the top 6.

The Hobby Stock feature had a lot of action to it with Rick Munson, Josh
True, Robert Tippery, Kyle Vanover and Tom Myers battling for the early
lead. Munson grabbed the lead on lap 2. On lap 3 Max Harder came into the
picture and took the lead. Josh Sink took the lead on lap 11 and went on to
take the checkered flag first. But post race inspection found him having an
over compressed motor and he was disqualified giving the win to Tom Myers.
Bill Woehler took 2nd after the dq.

In the Pro-Am/Pro-Stock feature Shawn Bulin and Marty Steinbach battled for
the early lead. But Steinbach took control when Bulin spun on the back
chute. Dave Plowman inherited 2nd at this point and did his best to run down
Steinbach. But a fast closing Tim Podraza took 2nd on lap 13. Steinbach
went on to win with Podraza, Rick Negrete, Joe Feyen and Thad Thomson
rounding out the top 5. Negrete was the hard charger though moving up from
an 8th row start.

Darin Hoegren took the early lead in the Novice Hornet feature. But Kenin
Colestock was on the move and made a high side pass on Hoegren on lap 3. The
pass was so high that Colestock even bumped the wall. Colestock went on to
take the victory over Hoegren, Andrew Cuva, Barry Kinnersly and Jake Sells.

The Pro Hornet feature saw Joe Copeland jump to the early lead. But by the
end of lap 1 Jason Miller had the lead. Miller went on to record the win
over Pete Fink Jr., Alex Fink, Mike Kennedy and Perry Soule. But Miller
refused a claim and was disqualified giving the win to Pete Fink Jr.

The Novice Crate Late Model feature was a barnburner. Micah Brown took the
early lead and held it til there were 3 laps left. Jase Kaser took over at
that point. But on the last lap Kaser tangled with Ryan Gladwin and Kortney
Kosiski snuck through the hole to pick up the win, her 2nd of the year. Mike
Gillespie finished 2nd ahead of Brown, Scott Keffer amd Mollee Collins.

Floyd Richards took the early lead in the B-Modified feature only to lose it
on the back stretch to Anthony Attanasio. Chad Dills took the lead on lap 3.
But it was short lived as Scott Carlson took the lead on lap 4. The race
ended due to the time limit for restarts with Carlson taking the win over
Dills, Richards, Jim Hendricks and Hank Dewild.

opening night of the Cornhusker Classic on Saturday night. The featured
class was the NCRA/TORA Super Late Models and John Hampel came away with his

Spieker passed Boen for 2nd on lap 2
And Hampel was in 3rd by lap 5. Hampel moved up to 2nd on lap 7 and set out
to catch Anderson. Anderson and Hampel opened up a quarter of a lap
advantage over the rest of the field and started threading there way through
lapped traffic. Finally Hampel caught up to Anderson and took the lead with
3 laps left as Anderson's motor started popping and cracking. Anderson held
on to 2nd ahead of Bryant Goldsmith, Al Humphrey, Leon Zeitner, Boen, Chris
Spieker and Joe Kosiski. Delbert Smith and Billy Leighton Jr. rounded out
the top 10. After winning consolation races Al Zeitner and Mike Collins

Speed Bowl closes out 2007 season

By Mike Hughes

RED CLOUD, NE (September 23)—The Speed Bowl in Red Cloud, NE, wrapped up the 2007 racing season on Sunday evening, September 23, with its final night of racing. This was a make-up race from an August 24th rainout.

‘The Red Cloud Rocket’ Lonnie Schriner and Jon Thompson dominated in the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature. Schriner took the lead at the drop of the green with Thompson in tow. Thompson took the lead on lap 2, but Schriner regained the lead on lap 5. The duo sailed around the 3/8-mile oval, lapping half of the 16-car field enroute to the checkers. Schriner scored his ninth win of the season and the track championship. Thompson was second, with Scott Smith a distant third. Tim Watts and Lance Borgman rounded out the top five. Heat race winners were Jim Pearce and Watts.

Jason Smidt of Minden won the IMCA Stock Car feature in a close race with Jason McCartney and Wayne Walker. Smidt led the opening lap, but was passed by McCartney on lap 2. The lone caution flew on lap 6 when Matt Streit and track champion Brett Behrends of Webber, KS, tangled, eliminating both cars. McCartney led the field back to green, but Smidt regained the top spot on lap 12 and held on to the checkers. McCartney, Walker, Shane Stout and Brant Beam completed the top five. Streit and Walker won the two heat races.

Ricky Runnion of Phillipsburg, KS, led all 15-laps of the caution filled IMCA Hobby Stock feature to score his first ever feature win. Heat one winner Joe McDole finished in the runner-up spot, followed by track champion Jim Buss of Blue Hill. Rocky Zimmerman finished fourth and Mike Shriver fifth. Jared Lewis won the other heat race.

Billy Gregg of Hastings led from green to checkered in the 4-cylinder feature race. Josh Jacobitz finished second, followed by heat two winner Benjamin Hobbs. Darick Lamberson won the other heat race. The track champion was Andy Sole of Nelson.

The track management would like to thank everyone for their support during the 2007 racing season.

16th Annual Tiny Lund Memorial Results

From Shelby County Speedway

HARLAN, Ia (September 15). Cold temperatures, rain and even a fire in the pits could not hold back the 16th annual Tiny Lund Memorial Race at Shelby County Speedway this past weekend, as 1600 fans packed the facility. The track on Friday night was host to 178 drivers eager to make the main event for Saturday. The Dwight Wrich Pole Dashes were held as well, with Jordan Grabouski (#30 modified), TJ Criss (#12J late model) and Dustin Smith (#85 stock car) taking home some extra cash for winning the pole dashes.

The race on Saturday started off being renamed to Pack the Track 500. The track was packed and ready to go, it rained, the cars packed the track again, it rained again, the track was packed again… well, you get the just of it. After an approximate 2 hour rain delay, and numerous “practice” packing laps for the cars, the track was ready for the B-features to begin. Once again, the infield and back pit area were filled to the brim with 182 cars on the line-up sheet. The drivers must have been anxious to get to the main event, because the B-features for all classes finished rather quickly and without incident. Cheers were heard when the pace car, the real car that Tiny Lund used to win the Daytona 500, took to the track to lead the classes through their parade lap.

Twenty-two sport compacts took to the track first for their 15-lap feature. The 55 car of Bryan Smith took off at the falling of the green flag for the early lead, but Peter Fink (#13), Tom Summerfield (#67) and Tim Cass (#33TC) were right there waiting for the advantage to take the lead. With 10 laps to go, the 2R of Dan Rhiely got into another car, each going high in the bank of turn 4. Both managed to hang on and keep going without incident. With 8 laps to go, Summerfield takes the lead but it was short-lived. Summerfield and Dustin Benning (#25) got into each other causing Summerfield to slid back to 8th place. With 3 laps to go, Tim Cass takes over the 2nd spot, while Rhiely and Ole Olson (#23) are close in 3rd and 4th. Fink takes the checker flag, followed by Tim Cass, Bryan Smith, Olson, and Benning. Right after the race was complete, the fire truck took off to attend to a fire in the pits. It appears that the #87 car of Taylor Griffin caught fire when he returned to his trailer, but the fire was extinguished and Griffin was ok.

Next up, 24 hobbies took to the track for a 20-lap feature race. Once the green flag fell, the #12 car of Doug Smith, #62B of Andy Boeckman, and the #81 car of Devin Smith all took off and separated themselves from the rest of the pack. All these drivers are from Lake City – is there something in the water over there? Doug Smith and Boeckman were battling side-by-side for the lead with 12 laps to go. By this time, the entire field was spread out over half the track length. Marcus Fagan (#1F) and Tanner Powers (#60) were trying to make headway from 4th and 5th place. The Lake City crew was able to hold onto their early lead and finish strong with Doug Smith in 1st, followed by Boeckman and Devin Smith. Powers made it past Fagan for the 4th spot, while Fagan finished 5th.

The races were rolling right along and time was being made up from the earlier rain delay. Of course, as soon as I thought that was the case, I jinxed it. Twenty-four sport mods took to the track for their 20-lap feature and caution after caution was thrown. The racing started fast and furious with 3-wide racing in turn 1 on the first lap. The 4K car of Mick King was able to make it out front to take the lead rather quickly. Once in open air, King was able to pull away. The race for 2nd through 7th place was packed tight with 17 laps to go. The first caution comes out with 14 laps to go for the #14 of Jared Hansen. Hansen went over the bank in turns 3 and 4, but was able to return to the race. Right before the caution was thrown, the #2 car of Mike Brown was hit and he ended up on pit row just as the caution was thrown. Would he be the lucky dog and not be a lap down? The answer was no – the restart had Brown at the back of the pack. With 12 laps to go, the 5J car of James May and #13 of Brett Moffitt tangled in turn 2. Both were able to keep going, but it slowed them up in their chase for the lead. King was still the leader at this point. Caution came out again and the cars lined up double-file for the restart on lap 12. Upon restart, the cars of Greg Tichy (#480), Jason Kohl (#27), and Denny Berghahn (#6X) collided with each other in the front stretch, bringing out another caution flag. With 10 laps to go, another caution came out. The restart order showed King as the leader, followed by May, Chad Dills (#11), Chris Grothe (#90) and Fred Schimmels (#94). The #99 car of Josh May pulled into the pits and Jared Hansen pulled onto pit row during this caution. With the race restarted, the #3 car of Joseph Mefferd pulled into the pits with a flat tire. King was able to take the checker, followed by Dills, May, Moffitt, and Schimmels.

The 25-lap stock car feature was next onto the track with a 24-car field. Caution came out on the first lap, causing a complete restart of the race to occur. This was hopefully not a sign of things to come for the stock car event. With 1 lap down, another caution came out for an accident in turn 4 involving the #23 car and the #38 car. The restart order showed Dustin Smith (#85) in the lead, followed by Donavon Smith (#35), Tim Bengard (#19), Doug Adamy (#93), and Brian Blessington (#92B). Dustin Smith kept running the high groove through the corners to keep him in the lead. With 16 laps to go, caution was thrown for a car hitting the wall on the front stretch (#29, Tanner Partridge) who ended up pulling into the pits. Dustin Smith still held the lead, followed by Donavon Smith, Bengard, David Smith (#8), and Adamy. With 15 laps to go, Adamy spun in turn 4 was t-boned and pushed over the bank in turn 4. Adamy finished 18th in the evening due to this incident. With 9 laps to go, another caution was thrown and the #10 car of Rod Snellenberg ended up in pit row. Dustin Smith still had the lead on the restart and took the checker flag at the end. Dustin Smith was followed by David Smith, Keith Knop (#10x), Ryan Webb (ZR1) and Bengard.

Twenty-four late models lined up four wide to take their parade lap before the crowd. The 35-lap feature started with the #12J of TJ Criss on pole. With 30 laps to go, the caution came out. The cars were all able to double-file for the restart. With 27 laps to go, the caution comes out once again. The 35 car of Ed Kosiski stalled in turn 4 and had to be pushed into the pit area. The restart order had the #10 of Jay Stewart leading, followed by Todd Cooney (#30), Dave Jorgensen (#1), Criss, and Corey Zeitner (26JR). With 25 laps to go in the race, Cooney passes Stewart for the lead, followed by Zeitner who passed Stewart now for 2nd place. Stewart maintained 3rd place at this point, but it looked like his car had something amiss and wasn’t as fast as when he first started. With 23 laps to go, the 30C car of Robert See pulled into the pits. Barry Sorensen (#45) who had started the race in 11th place was on the move up and was passing Stewart for the third place position with 20 laps to go. With 17 laps to go, Cooney caught up to the rear of the field and started lapping traffic. The race remained green from this point on and with the large amount of cars in the field and the front leaders mixed in with the pack at this point, it was very difficult to tell who was in which place. Of noteworthy “on-the move” cars, the 17M of Phil Miller started the race in 16th, fell back to 20th, but finished in 9th place. The 85 car of Kelly Tapper started the race in 13th and finished in 8th place. The 92 car of Josh Most started in 23rd position and finished in 14th. With 5 laps to go, Sorensen and Cooney were battling for the lead. It appeared that Sorensen had the lead to the checker flag and even had a victory lane interview. However, within the lap traffic that Sorensen and Cooney were fighting through while battling each other for the lead, the 5S of Jeff Segebart snuck in on the low side during the white flag lap and finished the race in first place. The ending left everyone confused, and had to be reviewed by the officials from video taken to know for sure what happened. The call that Segebart won the race was upheld.

The night concluded with the 35- lap modified race featuring 26 cars. The race started off with a bang when on the first lap, a three-car accident involving Craig Reetz (#1R), Tyler Pemble (#37), and Sean Barragan (#88), caused the caution to be thrown and a complete restart to the race. Upon the restart, Clint Homan (#27) led the field. Red Monson (#2) who started in 14th place, wasted no time in making his way to the front and took the lead from Homan with 30 laps to go in the race. Homan and the #3 car of Mike Albertsen were fighting for 2nd and 3rd, respectively. The hot racing action was slowed when with 27 laps to go, the caution was thrown for the #02 car of John Davis came to a stop on the track. On the restart, Homan reclaimed the lead from Monson, but Monson was not going to settle for 2nd and was able to gain the lead back with 25 laps to go. Meanwhile, the car of Jay Noteboom (#7N) was charging hard making his way into the top 5 cars after starting from his 21st position. Monson’s lead was in jeopardy when a caution was thrown with 9 laps to go for the tangling of Homan and Chevy Hadan (#4). Noteboom was right on Monson’s tail on the restart and within 2 laps, he was able to take the lead from Monson. However, Albertson also wanted a piece of the action as he started to mix it up with the top two cars of Monson and Noteboom. Noteboom, Albertson, and Monson staged a wild battle with Noteboom on the high side, Albertson on the low side and Monson in the middle. Albertson stole the lead for a lap, but Noteboom would gain ground and pull in front by a car length at the flag stand. The crowd was on their feet cheering on the finish of Noteboom in first followed by Albertson, Monson, Jeff Stephens (#92), and Greg Cox (#62). The crowd let everyone know how good the racing action was by giving the racers a standing ovation. All-in-all, it was a very exciting finish to the Shelby County Speedway 2007 season.

The Shelby County Racers Association (SCRA) would like to thank all the fans that came out to support the drivers and all the drivers who came out to support the track. All of this wouldn’t have been possible without all of you - so we would like to say thank you! Input on Sponsorship Seminar Requested

From Gary Dominguez- President, Midwest Motorsports Promoting

With the rising costs of racing, and more and more tracks closing down, or
limiting their schedules and/or purses, it has become obvious racers need to
find better ways of supporting their racing machines. I have been telling
racers this for many years.

We are not just racers anymore. We wear many hats now including, but not
limited to; athlete, entertainer, role model, public Relations directors,
and businessmen. As with any business, we rely on income from our customers
to survive. Your sponsors are your customers. As with any business, your
decisions directly affect how you keep your customers.

With that, Midwest Motorsports Promoting is again offering a sponsorship
seminar to all racers of all classes of all tracks. This seminar teaches
techniques on how to market for, obtain, and retain your sponsors.

Before we set a time, date and cost to this, we would first like to find out
if there is an interest in this program. I would also like to hear feedback
from past alumni of the course, both sucesses and failures.

please e-mail us with your input at gary.dominguez@woodsbros.com

Thanks to all,

Gary Dominguez- President: Midwest Motorsports Promoting

I-80: First LM Win for Leapley; Hipnar Wins Title

Jim Brennan

(Greenwood, Ne., 09/09/07) The NASCAR Whelen All American Series Chase for
the Championship continued Sunday night with Gary Leapley taking his first
Grand National feature win of the year and Todd Hipnar getting his first
career point title.

The Grand National feature event was one of the best races of the year as
Curt Drake won a 3 car battle for the first lead of the night. But Andrew
Kosiski and Gary Leapley were up for the task at hand as the 3 battled 3
abreast for much of the race. Right behind them in a 2 car battle were Dave
Cook and point leader Todd Hipnar. Leapley was running the high groove,
Kosiski the middle groove and Drake the low groove. With 3 laps left Leapley
took control of the race and with 2 laps left Cook shot up to 2nd. At the
finish line it was Leapley, Cook, Kosiski, Dwane Pospisil, Drake and Hipnar.
For Hipnar the 6th place finish sewed up his first track title in 18 years
of racing.

In the Modified class a spinout in his heat race, sent point leader J.C.
Wyman to the pits and cost him a top 12 inverted start in the feature. He
started 21st and it was just too much ground to make up. The feature started
with Jeremy Leiting grabbing the early lead. By lap 3 Reece Coffee took
command of the race and went on to record his 5th win of the year. Robert
Brinkman was 2nd ahead of Matt Richards, Mike Johnson, Jeremy Leiting and
Wyman. Richards 3rd place finish gave him the point title over Wyman and
Coffee.

The Pro-am feature saw Jeff Atkins grab the early lead. But on lap 2 Thad
Thomson took the lead and went on to record his 3rd win of the year over a
fast closing Rick Negrete, Joe Feyen, Shawn Bulin, Jason Cieslik and Marty
Steinbach. Bulin's 4th place finish earned him the Pro-am track title.

The Hobby Stock feature saw Rick Munson take the early lead only to lose it
on lap 2 to Josh True. But True's lead was short lived as on lap 3 Josh Sink
passed him and went on to record his first feature win of the year. Track
champion Jesse Sobbing finished 2nd ahead of Tom Myers, True and Munson.

The next event scheduled at I-80 is the Cornhusker Classic, September 21st
thru 23rd featuring the NCRA/TORA Super Late Models, the IMCA/USRA/I-80 Type
Late Models, Modifieds, Grand Nationals, Pro-ams/IMCA Stocks, B-Modifieds
and Hobby Stocks.

Dover, Smith, Haglund and LaChapelle Win Eagle's Nebraska Cup

By Greg Soukup

The Nebraska Cup was held on a Sunday this year, and a total of 117 cars signed into the pits to try and take home the crystal trophies and the winner’s purse from Eagle Raceway, America’s Home Track. A large crowd was on hand to witness the events on a cool September evening.

13 heat races were run in the 4 classes, and all went off without major incidents. Next up was the Sprint Pole Dash, which would set the lineup for the A Feature. The top 2 finishers from the 4 heat races vied to grab the pole position and the $600 check that went with it. Brad Krutz took the lead in his #91 with the 24B of Frank Galusha and the 23 of Terry Holliman behind. It didn’t take long for young Jack Dover, “The Gas Man” to jump into the 3rd spot after passing Holliman on the very first lap. From there to the finishing 5th lap it was Krutz, Galusha, Dover and Holliman.

After a short intermission it was time for the B Features.

The Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sport Compacts were first. At the end of the 1st lap it was Amanda Rhiley’s #51 in the lead followed by the 61J of Russell Johnson, Jack Prall Jr. in the 67 and the 20T of Steve Shepard. Shepard moved around Prall Jr. for 3rd after the 67 dropped back rapidly through the pack. Shortly thereafter Russell Johnson’s 61J also dropped from the event. At that time, it was Rhiley, Shepard and the #3 of Harry White. With just 2 laps remaining Mike Rice got around White to take over the 3rd spot. At the finish line it was Rhiley, Shepard, Rice’s #24, Adam Vrbka’s 7V and the 22 of Elliot Halvorsen transferring to the A Feature.

Next on the card was the Valentino’s Pizza IMCA Hobby Stocks. The early advantage was grabbed by the 4R of Kurt Phelps followed by Murray Haugen in the #8 and Rick Bradley’s 28B. On the 3rd lap Danny Lane moved his #17J past Bradley to snag the 3rd spot. With 7 laps left Phelps dropped back, making the running order Haugen, Lane and Bradley. Just 2 laps later Haugen dropped out of the race, giving the lead to Lane. At the checkered flag it was Lane, Bradley, Shane Hiatt’s 21H and the 53 of Don Kros.

The Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds then rolled out onto the 1/3 mile. On lap #1 Cliff Turner looped his #51 in turns 3 & 4, causing a complete restart. When the race began again it was the Anderson’s in the top two positions with Chad Anderson’s #8A in front followed by Chad Anderson’s 8C and the 3T of Tom Spanel. On the 3rd lap Darren Hosick leapt around both Spanel and Chad Anderson to snag 2nd. On the very last circuit Mike Stearns got around Spanel for the 3rd position. Transferring to the A Feature were Chad and Dusty Anderson, Stearns, Hosick and Spanel.

In the first Budweiser Championship 360 Sprint B Feature, 2-time and defending track points champion Mike Boston took the point in his #51 followed by Adam Gullion’s 96KX and Stu Snyder in the 2D. The running order remained the same with Boston winning, Gullion in 2nd, Snyder in 3rd, Ken Klabunde’s 28B in 4th and the 10 of Dennis Moore Jr. in 5th.

The 2nd Sprint B saw John Klabunde’s #77 in the lead followed by Jeff Griffis’ #3 and Jeff Lowery holding 3rd position in his #45. It took Lowery only 2 laps to move around Griffis for 2nd. 3 laps later Lowery passed Klabunde to take the point. With 3 laps remaining Griffis also passed Klabunde and made a valiant try for the win coming out of turn #4 on the last lap, but was forced to settle for 2nd.

It was then time for the Main Events to be run. First up was the Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sport Compacts. Joey Danley was first back to the flag stand in his #14 with Chris LaChapelle’s 31 in 2nd, the #2 of Dan Rhiley in 3rd and Jack Prall III’s #44 in 4th. It took LaChapelle only 4 laps to grab the lead as he moved around Danley. After the leaders cleared the finish line on that lap Jared Deterding’s 13J was spun out by the #4 of Bob McCloud. McCloud and Deterding both took up positions at the rear of the field. 2 laps later Rhiley got around Danley for 2nd. With 11 laps left Justin Busboom moved his #62 into the 3rd spot, followed 4 laps later by Barry Kinnersley’s 00 moving into 4th just 4 laps later. Busboom wasn’t settling for 3rd though, as he moved around Rhiley with 5 laps left. 2 circuits later Rhiley and Danley both suffered tire problems and were forced to retire to the pits. Chris LaChappelle held on for the victory followed by Busboom, Kinnersley and Prall III.

Although this was Chris’ very first racing victory, he managed it in only his 7th week of competition. “I need to thank my pit crew Dave and Jason Tadlock for both talking me into racing and for getting the car so good tonight” Chris said. “I also need to thank my sponsors, Grandmother’s Restaurant and Bull’s Eye Pest Control. But most of all I want to thank the fans for coming out to watch us. I’ve had a blast every night that I’ve been here and I’ll definitely be back next year,” Chris added.

The top 20 Valentino’s Pizza IMCA Hobby Stocks were next. 2-time and defending track champion Justin Wulf moved into the lead in his #86 at the drop of the green flag. Close behind Wulf were the 14 of Ron Novak, the 31M of Mark Haglund and the 1R of R.J. Macku. There was a scary moment on the 2nd lap as Kyle Bond rolled his #0 in turn 2, but he emerged unscathed and even made an attempt to restart the race after a visit to his pits but dropped out for good soon after. Nick Beckman moved his #22 around Novak on the restart and then passed Wulf on the next lap. With 5 laps in the books Beckman pulled into the 4th spot. There were 13 laps left when Nic Topil’s 7T moved into 4th around Beckman. 6 laps to go in the race Topil‘s 7T suffered a flat right front tire, sending him into the wall in turns 1 & 2. The victory was taken home by Mark Haglund, with Wulf 2nd, Beckman in 3rd and the 3k of Jerry Keaton in 4th.

It was then the Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modified’s A Main taking to the track. Bob Zoubek’s 5S grabbed the early point with the 95 of Dylan Smith, the 4X of Chevy Hadan and the #3 of Chris Alcorn in hot pursuit. Hadan and Alcorn got together in turn #4 sending Alcorn spinning into the infield. On lap 4 Tom Svoboda passed Hadan to take over 3rd and Hadan dropped out of the contest on the following lap. That made the running order Smith, Zoubek, Svoboda and the #13 of Doug Deterding. Svoboda got around Zoubek for the 2nd position on the restart. Chris Alcorn had not given up however and moved into 4th spot with just 10 laps left, taking over 3rd 2 laps later and moving past Svoboda for 2nd with 5 laps left. Try as he might, Alcorn could not overtake Smith who crossed the finish line first.

This is Smith’s 2nd year racing a modified, following 1 year in a street stock. Despite this victory, Smith stated that “This has been a bad year for us, and it’s so good to finally grab a win”. “I knew Chris was coming, because I could see him moving up the leader board when I checked it while running down the back stretch. I wasn’t worried about him taking me out, because Chris is a great driver. He always runs you hard but clean, and I’ve learned an awful lot from him about driving this year” Dylan continued. “I need to thank my crew for giving me such a great car tonight. Mike & Lisa Gocke, ‘Heavy’, Gary and Jaime do a wonderful job. They got the car so I could do anything I wanted with it and go anywhere with it. Also I need to send out a big thanks to Damian & Joni Smith, Ryan Fjell and Kramer Watts; Austin & Shelbie, Mom, Dad, Grandpa and Grandma always come out to support me too. The fans are great here, and are always there to root on all the racers. Lastly, I need to thank my sponsors” Smith finished. Dylan’s sponsors include Phil’s Steakhouse, Marquardt Plumbing Inc., Burke Show Cattle, Eckley Racing Engines, Fitness together, Super Wash, Hot Rods by Todd, Augustine Electric, The Alley Bar, Tonniges Chevrolet, Team Heavy, Vrbka Ag Solution, Cappy’s Hot Spot Bar & Grill, Active Life Family Chiropractic and White Eagle.

The Budweiser Championship 360 Sprints were the final A Feature of the evening. Brad Krutz took advantage of his pole position start, taking the point at the drop of the green; he was pursued by Jack Dover, Frank Galusha and Jay Russell. On the 2nd lap Chad Meinholtz drove his #69M around Russell for 4th. 2 laps later Dover got around Krutz for the lead in heavy traffic. 3 laps after that Meinholtz got around Galusha to take 3rd with Russell following him into the 4th spot. Rodney Droud tried to make his last sprint car race a memorable one by getting all the way up to 4th with 5 laps remaining, but Mike Boston passed him the following lap. With just 2 laps left in the contest Adam Gullion suffered an injury to his left leg when his engine expired. The restart saw Dover still in the lead, Krutz 2nd, Meinholtz 3rd and Boston in 4th. Meinholtz made a hard charge coming out of the 4th turn on the very last lap and finished ahead of Krutz for 2nd by the slimmest of margins.

This is the 2nd win of the season for Jack, having taken the victory on the 18th of August also. Jack regularly runs a 410 sprint at Knoxville on Saturdays, where he finished 14th in the points and 3rd for the Rookie of the Year. Jack said, “My folks wanted to go somewhere else to race tonight, but I insisted that we come back to Eagle.” “It turned out great, because before I went out for the feature my mom said ‘You need to bring home that $2000 so that we can get you a new helmet’. I always listen to my mom, so I had to win,” he added. “The track was really good tonight, but it was confusing. I like that, because it makes you work to find out where you’re best line is,” he stated. Jack continued by saying “I need to thank all of my sponsors. They let me do this every week and I really appreciate all that they do for us”. Jack’s sponsors include Trail Performance, Eckley Racing Engines, 3D Auto Transport, Keizer Wheels, Langfeldt Overhead Doors Thorpe’s Body Shop and RMS. “I need to thank my pit crew too because Mike, Paul, Jason, Dave, Derrick and ‘Tracker’ do a great job for us every week. Also, a special thanks to Layne Priddy for all he does” Jack finished.

Although the regular weekly shows have come to an end, there’s still plenty going on at America’s Home Track. This coming Friday, September 7th you’ll be able to see “Full Pull Frenzy NPTA Tractor Pulls” and don’t forget October 28th when CD105.9’s Stephen King presents the Enduro Spook-tacular featuring Sport Compacts.

Thanks for supporting Eagle Raceway…America’s Home Track!

Humston, Kosiski Top I-80 Labor Day Extravaganza

Jim Brennan

(Greenwood, Ne., 09/02/07) The NASCAR Whelen All American Series
Chase for the Championship continued Sunday night with the Nebraska/Iowa
Supply Labor Day Extravaganza. Twin Late Model features were on tap with Rookie Chad Humston winning the first and veteran Joe Kosiski overcome a rollover in the 2nd heat to record a feature win in the 2nd one.

Kosiski went up on the back wall on lap 2 of his heat and kind of barrel rolled over coming to rest on its wheels. So with his car beyond repair for the 1st feature, he had to try and borrow a car that had qualified. That turned out to be his brother-in-law, Scott
Koskovich. The feature started with Todd Bell getting the early lead ahead of Humston and Jason Hobscheidt. Humston took the lead on lap 3 and never relinquished it. Kosiski, who started 26th with the borrowed car worked his way up to an 11th place finish..
Al Humphrey took 2nd ahead of Leon Zeitner, Hobscheidt and Al Zeitner.

For the 2nd feature they inverted the top 12 from the first feature which put Kosiski on the outside front row. Mike Wallace jumped out front early but by the end of lap 1 Kosiski had the lead and held it the rest of the way with Wallace holding on for 2nd ahead of Leon Zeitner, Craig Preble and Justin Zeitner. Humphrey finished 8th and is unofficially the track champion. Results are pending a tech inspection of the top 4 cars.

The Modified feature saw Larry Goertz jump out front early from his outside front row starting position. And despite some challeges by the likes of Scott Carlson, J.C. Wyman and Jeff Stephens, Goertz was able to go flag to flag for his first career feature win, It was a brand new car he brought out for the 1st time. Wyman finished 2nd ahead of Stephens, Matt Richards and Carlson.

The Grand National feature saw Jeff Tilley lead from start to finish in his dad’s #56. No one could mount a serious challenge as Shawn Harker came home 2nd ahead of Dave Doll, Ron Tex Jr. and point leader Todd Hipnar.

The Hobby Stock feature started with 13 cars and finished with 10. Roger Timperly took the early lead and held it til lap 2 when he spunout in turn 4. Point leader Jesse Sobbing inherited the lead and went on to record his 5th win of the year. Josh Sink finished 2nd ahead of Tom Myers, Brandon Wergin, Jimmy Nichols and Timperly.

The start of the Pro-am feature had the first 2 rows all bunchec up going into turn 1 and Marty Steinbach threaded the needle to take the lead in turn 2. Rick Negrete would come forward to challenge Steinbach over the last 7 laps, taking the lead on the high side with 3 laps left. Chad Sanders took 3rd ahead of Doug Stevenson Jr. and Don Mohr. Point leader Shawn Bulin finished 6th. For Negrete it was his 3rd win of the year.
