NASCAR Weekly Classes Kick off May at I-80

Greenwood, NE (April 29, 2008) – With Mother Nature wreaking havoc on the beginning of the 2008 season at I-80 Speedway, all eyes are on the weather forecasts as drivers and fan alike hope to get the Sunday, May 4 show of the NASCAR Dodge Late Models, Great Clips Modifieds, Certified Transmission Pro Ams, IMCA Midas Northern Sport Mods and Sport Compacts show in the record books.

“Mother Nature has not been good to us so far this year, said Ed Kosiski, track promoter. “I know the drivers are anxious to get their season started and fans are ready to watch some of the best racing action in the area.”

Besides racing action, fans will get a chance to win prizes in I-80 Speedway’s version of “Let’s Make a Deal.” Also, all kids can get their favorite driver number painted on their face, and one lucky Ralston Dairy Queen Kids Club member will get to be the junior flagman with I-80 Speedway’s flagman, Larry White.

Racing on Sunday is slated to start at 5:55 p.m., with hot laps at 5:30 p.m. Pit Gates open at 2:30 p.m. and front gate open at 4:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $8 for adults, $5 for juniors 13-18 with ID, $1 for kids 5-12 and kids under 5 are free.

Next week on Sunday, May 11 Taylor’s Flowers presents racing at I-80 Speedway, and mothers will receive a free flower from Taylor’s, as well as some other gifts.

Greenwood, NE (April 25, 2008) – The races for Friday, April 25 and Sunday, April 27 have been cancelled.

“We have had so much rain over the past few weeks, we felt it was best to go ahead and cancel early so the fans and racers can make other plans,” said track promoter Ed Kosiski. “The track is just too soft.”

Besides the amount of precipitation already received these past couple of weeks at the facility, the weekend’s forecast of low temperatures and showers also contributed to the decision.

regarding Sunday, 4/27 by 3pm today.

Butler County opener postponed to May 2

Greenwood, NE (April 15, 2008) – Fans and drivers alike are hoping that Mother Nature cooperates this week in order to get the opening night of the NASCAR Whelen All American series in the book at I-80 Speedway on Friday, April 25. Scheduled for the night are the Dodge NASCAR Late Models, Great Clips Modifieds and Certified Transmission Pro Ams. On Sunday, April 27 the SLMR returns to I-80 Speedway for their third appearance of the season, along with IMCA Crate Models, Great Clips Modifieds, Hobby Stocks and Sport Compacts. That Sunday night also will showcase a NAPA Hobby Stock $300 to win feature race.

“We have not been able to get the first night of the NWAAS this year due to the weather, and have had to cancel twice,” said Ed Kosiski, track promoter. “Hopefully Mother Nature will “black flag” the rain this week.”

On Friday, race fans will get a chance show their NASCAR knowledge by playing NASCAR trivia for prizes. Two lucky fans will go head to head in a battle of the brains. Ralston Dairy Queen Kids Club members will get to make autograph books before the races so they can get driver autographs.
During intermission on Sunday, fans will compete against each other in a “Fastest Firesuit Race.” Four fans will get to dress themselves in a firesuit, compete in a foot race and get out of the suit. The fastest fan will win a prize. Plus two lucky Kids Club members will get a chance to award the trophies to the feature winners for the night.

The Friday show is slated to get under way at 7:00 pm with hot laps at 6:30 pm. The pit gate opens at 4pm and the grandstands open at 5:30 pm. Ticket prices for Friday are $8 for adults, $5 for juniors 13-18, $1 for kids 5-12, and under 5 are free.

Racing on Sunday is slated to start at 5:55 p.m., with hot laps at 5:30 p.m. Pit Gates open at 2:30 p.m. and front gate open at 4:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $8 for adults, $5 for juniors 13-18 with ID, $1 for kids 5-12 and kids under 5 are free.

I-80: Close Battles in Caution-Filled Night

Greenwood, NE (April 20, 2008) - A tired, but happy Travis Dickes (21t) took
the second feature win of the Spec Late Model Racing season at I-80 Speedway
after battling yellow flags and a rough track.

"I am worn out," Dickes said after his first SLMR feature win.

The race saw the 1x of Bo Egge taking the lead with Mike Collins (3) and
Kyle Berck (14) pulling up to battle for the top spot. Egge brought the
yellow out with 21 to go, giving Collins the lead. After another yellow,
Dickes took the lead with eleven to go. Berck tried to make a surge to the
front, but couldn't catch Dicke.

The Great Clips IMCA Modifieds had an exciting final five laps with Reese
Coffee (16) taking the lead from Chris Mills (00c) who went on to win the
race at the line by a bumper.

One of only two caution free feature races of the night, the Hobby Stock
division provided one of the most exciting finishes of the night. The 37d
of Brad Derry and the 78 of Shannon Anderson traded the leave several times
before mechanical problems caused the two to push up into each other coming
out of turn four on the final lap, allowing the 21h of Shane Hiatt to cruise
the bottom of the track and take the checkered flag.

The Sport Compacts also saw a caution free night as Pete Fink Jr. (13) took
the first win of the season.

Brent Baker (21x) took the win in the IMCA Crate Models, which saw a battle
for second between two brothers: the 92 of Jacob Brown and the 24x of Micah
Brown.

BCM Test and Tune Canceled - Again

Test and tune is canceled for this Sunday, April 20th. Opening night is still scheduled for Friday, April 25 and a possible pre-race test and tune may be scheduled. If run, the day and time will be posted Sunday evening.

$250 to start A feature

No, it's not a real race...yet?

When I worked for Eagle Raceway, whenever a big show would come along the two questions most racers asked was: how much to win and more often…how much to start the A feature?

I was reading through the April 2008 issue of Motorsport magazine and came across an idea forwarded by the FIA’s Max Mosely. While not running the governing body of Formula One (and doing odd things of late – you google it…), Moseley put up the idea of increasing pay, but to the BACK of the field.

The reasoning was that since the Ferraris and McLarens got 95% of the TV exposure, the smaller teams needed the extra boost they couldn’t get in sponsor revenue. His reasoning was that those small teams can’t run on just 5% of the budget of the larger teams, so why not give them a larger share of the pie? The big teams made the money in sponsors, the small teams would be subsidized to a greater extent by Formula One (all teams get a share of the contract revenue already).

With that in mind I thought of a similar idea. With the skyrocketing costs of racing, why not bump up the pay – but at the back of a weekly field. I took a look at the Eagle Raceway Sprint purse (from their website). The A feature pays 1000 to win, and $150 to start. What if you ran for $250 to start? The old argument that the A doesn’t pay for the tire and fuel is now gone, or at least a lot more manageable.

BUT, it comes at a price…let’s look. For the example, I used the payout for the sprints at Eagle since it was readily available and it’s a very unique division in that nobody runs Sprints in Nebraska weekly.

So, everyone from 9th on down gets a raise. More than half the field. 8th is unchanged.

Granted, the top 5 take a hit…6th & 7th’s deduction is minor.

“We can’t race on $1000 to win!” is a common statement. Well, for all but 9 teams, they found a way. And consider that three of those winners, Jack Dover (1 weekly race), Jason Danley (4) and Chad Meinholdt (1) all raced just a handful of weekly shows – combined it was less than half the season, that means all but 6 teams raced most of the races if not all at Eagle for less than a $1000 payoff each night.

So the question is: do you race for the trophy or the check? The winner still takes home more than anyone else, just only twice as much as the last place guy instead of eight times as much. I’m not talking about some sort of racing “communism,” I’m talking about sustaining your show, which is proving to be tough for some tracks, especially a one-track class. And perhaps, if the guy winning every week weren’t taking all the cash, maybe the little teams could catch up.

To be honest, while on paper it's a logical response to those who say the starting pay isn’t enough to cover basic expenses, I’m thinking this won't gain any traction. Here’s why:

1. While it’s proven unattainable for many, the advertising value of “Big Money to Win!!!” is just too much to overcome. And, I would even in my proposal say this applies only to your weekly show. The draw of the big money is what gets the hot dogs to the track.

2. People who know me know I’m a free-market kind of guy. To the victor go the spoils. Hard work should be rewarded. It’s a lot to ask people who’ve played by the rules, earned their stripes, to take such a hit for others. Plus, my idea of the purse and the effects of helping the back-runners get faster through money is a very “perfect-world” type of scenario and doesn't take a lot of other things into account.

3. Would the extra money make enough of a difference anyway? We may be too far gone to think that this kind of kick to the back of the field will do much good in the long run. As in most cases, this is a band-aid to a larger problem which requires things like radical rules changes, and perhaps other ways to raise the payout.

As I said, it’s just an idea – but with the fact that sanctions don’t seem to want to reduce costs through rules changes, racers won't cut their spending, nor promoters want to pay more in purse, it’s one way I saw to sustain the field, at least in the short term while other influences outside the sport (economy, gas, etc.) are putting pressure on racing.

I-80 ASCS Show Rained Out

From I-80 Speedway

The ASCS Sprint car show scheduled for Friday, April 18 at I-80 has been
rained out. A makeup date will be announced by the track later.

The ASCS Midwest Region season opener was rescheduled to a one day event
after a weather postponed the original show, which was to be run April
11-12.

According to race director and ASCS rep Chuck Zitterich, the rescheduled date will be "later this summer."

Wavelink Practice Days

WRP will have practice/play day this weekend for both Go-Karts and Micro
Sprints.

Saturday, April 19th the Go-karts will be first to hit the track this season
with a practice session starting at 7:00 p.m.

Sunday, April 20th, the Micro sprints will also have a practice session
starting at 7:00 p.m. as well.

As always, the season opener practice/play day is free of charge.

If you would like to purchase a reserved pit stall for the 2008 racing
season, you may also do that this weekend. Pit stalls are $50 each and are
assigned on a first come, first served basis with preference given to
drivers having paid pit stalls last season. If you have any questions,

Dover Dialed In For ASCS Shootout and Knoxville Opener

SPRINGFIELD, Neb. (April 17, 2008) -- Following his Ice
Breaker Challenge feature win at Eagle Raceway on
Saturday, April 5 and a pair of top ten finishes in ASCS
Sooner Region action last weekend, Jack Dover is dialed in
for the Third Annual ASCS Midwest vs. Northern Plains
Shootout at Nebraska Raceway Park's I-80 Speedway this
Friday.

Following the race at I-80, Team Dover Motorsports will
return to their shop in Springfield and remove the Eckley
Racing Engines 360 and drop in a 410 for the season opener
at Knoxville Raceway on Saturday night. Dover competed as
a rookie in the 410 division in 2007 at Knoxville and
finished 14th in the Championship Cup Series. Team Dover
Motorsports owners Marc and Lori Dover were presented the
Knoxville Raceway 410 Car Owners of the Year at the awards
banquet in 2007.

Dover began his Sprint Car racing career at I-80 Speedway
in the 305 division in 2005 at the age of 15. In August of
2007 Jack claimed an ASCS Midwest region feature win at
the 4/10-mile oval, his first ASCS victory. This season
Dover picked up his second ASCS win taking the Gulf South
Nationals at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown, TX, on March
1.

"We had a great run at I-80 last August and hopefully we
can be better this year." Stated Dover. "I enjoy racing at
I-80 and I'm looking forward to Friday night and hope the
weather cooperates."

Nebraska Raceway Park's I-80 Speedway is located in
Greenwood, NE, between Omaha and Lincoln off I-80 at exit
420, then 0.4 mile north on SR 63. Racing action gets
underway at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night.

Knoxville Raceway is located in Knoxville, IA, thirty
miles southeast of Des Moines. From south Des Moines take
the Highway 5 bypass to the Knoxville exit which will take
you through the city of Carlisle. Follow Highway 5 to the
first Knoxville exit (if ongoing road construction exists
take the Highway 14 exit then turn left at that stop).
From the first Knoxville exit proceed on what is Pleasant
Street turning left at the first stop light onto Highway
14/Lincoln Street. The track is about 3-4 blocks to your
left.

Dominguez to Step Down from Autograph Day

Once again, Midwest Racers Autograph Day was a resounding success thanks to
the tireless efforts of the Midwest Motorsports Promoting Committee. We had
44 racing machines and 9 Show cars on display. Approximately 2000 people
went through our displays at Uncle Ron's Wild West Saloon. Once again we
were second to none!
 
Since it's inception in 2001, Midwest Racers Autograph Day has signified the
kickoff of the local racing season. Religiously, it has been held on the
first Saturday of April. This date was selected because most tracks had not
begun their seasons, and it allowed ample time for racers to have their
machines completed. Most racing machines were ready to put on display for
the sake of their sponsors, and to attract new ones. It was also an
opportunity to network with themselves and the general public to attract new
race fans to their sport. The first event started with 15 cars, and grew to
as many as 110 cars by it's 4th year.  
 
They say imitation is the best form of flattery, so I truly feel flattered
that other factions have scheduled car shows, open houses, and races for the
same date as Autograph Day. This has affected our numbers somewhat, but we
still prevailed in all facets of our show including, but not limited to
attendance, car count, and media coverage. These factions were lacking one
thing: A committee that has a passion for racing, and it's preservation that
is also willing to spend one day a week being bored, and putting up with me
at our meetings. They are what made Autograph Day what it is; The best of
the best.
 
With all that being said, it is with a heavy heart that I must announce the
2008 Autograph Day has been my last. There are many factors I had to
consider for this decision. The main reason is that I think it is wise to
retire on the high side. I choose not to blame individuals as has been done
in the past at certain racetracks, but to truthfully say it has just become
too great a task to complete with the health, and personal challenges I have
recently encountered. . Although I am stepping down, Autograph Day will
continue on. I leave this rapidly growing event in the capable hands of our
former PR director, Mandi Oswald. Her young ideas and enthusiasm will ensure
the perpetuity of this event for years to come!

Following practice laps -- all pit pass holders will receive a meal in the pits. This practice night is totally dependent on the weather conditions for the rest of this week. We will not take a chance on ruining the track for our planned opening night on April 26th. Also there is some construction/concrete work being finished up requiring trucks on the frontstretch of the track.

Greenwood, NE (April 15, 2008) - Racing fans will have a full plate at I-80
Speedway in Greenwood, NE this weekend as the ASCS Midwest and Northern
Plains Regions 360 Sprint cars hit the dirt on Friday April 18 for their
rescheduled April 11th show. Also on the race card for the night will be the
opening point night for the NASCAR Late Models, Modifieds and Pro Ams. On
Sunday, April 20 the SLMR returns to I-80 Speedway for their second
appearance of the season, along with IMCA Crate Models, Modifieds, Hobby
Stocks and Sport Compacts.

This weekend also will be the 2nd annual signup for the Ralston Dairy
Queen's Kid Club. Kids 12 and under can sign up for the club, which allows
them into Kids Club Activities and gives them a chance to win prizes. On
both Friday and Sunday, kids will be able to make a banner for their
favorite driver.

"We are extremely excited to have the Ralston Dairy Queens as our sponsor
for the Kids Club this year," said Kelly Paxton, Kids Club Director. "We
have so many activities planned for the year that the kids will really enjoy
including autograph book making, Mr. /Ms. I-80 Speedway Trophy Kid, Jr.
Flagman, private parties with the drivers, and much more!"

On Friday, Race Fans will get a chance to win prizes through the game show
"Name That Tune," hosted by Joe "Stroker Ace" Proctor and Danielle "Race
Chick" Jensen. Two lucky fans will have their tickets drawn and will get a
chance to guess the names of songs. On Sunday, fans will get a chance to
compete in a limbo contest.

Also returning this season are several fan favorite games including the
Cookie's Restart Raffle, Big Red Keno Lucky Fan Race and Nebraska Lottery
Lucky Fan Race.

The Friday show is slated to get under way at 7:00 pm with hot laps at 6:30
pm. The pit gate opens at 4pm and the grandstands open at 5:30 pm. Ticket
prices for Friday are $13 for adults, $8 for juniors 13-18, $2 for kids
5-12, and under 5 are free. Pit passes are $20 for NASCAR and ASCS Members,
and $25 for non members.

Racing on Sunday is slated to start at 5:55 p.m., with hot laps at 5:30 p.m.
Pit Gates open at 2:30 p.m. and front gate open at 5:00 p.m. Ticket prices
are $8 for adults, $5 for juniors 13-18 with ID, $1 for kids 5-12 and kids
under 5 are free.

The practice session originally scheduled for after the races on Friday,
April 18th will be run after the races on Friday, April 25th.

Beatrice Speedway Opener Postponed

Due to the amount of rain we have had this week and the forecast for snow
for the weekend; we have decided to cancel Saturday night's races. Opening
night will be April 19th, hope to see you then.

I-80 Carl Edwards Night

Greenwood, NE (April 11, 2008) -Fans of Sprint Cup Driver Carl Edwards will
get to see the #99 Office Depot Ford Fusion driver in action again as he
battles local drivers on the dirt at I-80 Speedway on Saturday, July 13,
2008.

The SLMR and IMCA classes originally scheduled for that night will still run
as scheduled. The Edwards night rain date is Sunday, July 20.

Due to a conflict with a show at a neighboring track, IMCA has asked I-80
Speedway not to run the IMCA Modifieds and Hobby Stocks on Sunday, August 31
for their season ending championship.

The IMCA Mods will instead run their final night on Sunday, August 24 for a
total of 10 point nights and the Hobby Stocks will have their final night on
Sunday, August 17th for a total of 12 point nights.

The NASCAR Modifieds will not run on August 24 and will instead run on
Sunday, August 31 for their final night.

The website schedule will be updated by early next week to reflect the
changes.

BCM Test and Tune rescheduled for April 20

"Weather is not cooperating at all this week. The track prep will not be
able to be ready by Sunday, so again we will postpone test and tune until
April 20th at two o'clock and opening night will be April 25th. The last
thing we want is to have a rough track beating up the cars. Sorry for the
delays."

I-80 ASCS Spring Showdown Rescheduled

Greenwood, NE (April 9, 2008) – The 2008 Spring Showdown featuring the ASCS Sprints Midwest and Northern Plains Regions scheduled for Friday and Saturday, April 11 and 12 has been rescheduled for Friday, April 18th and the Saturday sprint show will not be rescheduled. The NASCAR Late Models, Modifieds and Pro Ams will also run that Friday night.

“With the amount of precipitation we have had, combined with the forecasted rain and snow, we felt it would be best to reschedule our show so the drivers and fans would know before the weekend arrived,” said track promoter Ed Kosiski.

“Many of the ASCS Northern Plains region drivers come from Canada and Minnesota, and they are forecasted to receive up to 8 inches of snow making travel for them difficult,” added Kosiski. “In addition, the lows forecasted for those race dates would not be good for the engines or comfortable for our fans.”

The practice session following the race originally scheduled for Friday, April 18 will be run after the races on Friday, April 25.

ASCS Showdown at I-80 Speedway This Weekend

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (April 7, 2008) – The American Sprint Car
Series Midwest and Northern Plains Regions are set to open up the 2008
season in intense fashion by squaring off for two nights of heated action
atop Nebraska Raceway Park's I-80 Speedway this weekend.

The Third Annual ASCS Midwest vs. Northern Plains Shootout atop the
4/10-mile I-80 Speedway oval is set to go green at 7:00 p.m. on both
Friday and Saturday night.

Missouri's Brian Brown has found I-80 Speedway to his liking over the past
several years, winning two of the three ASCS Midwest vs. Northern Plains
feature events contested over the past two seasons. Brown topped fields
of over 50 entries on both occasions, with one of the 2006 events
succumbing to weather.

Overall, Brown has topped four of nine ASCS features contested at I-80
Speedway over the past three years, with other ASCS winners at I-80
including Jack Dover, Chuck Swenson, Billy Alley, Jake Peters and Terry
McCarl.

While Brown tries to add a tenth career ASCS Midwest Region win over the
course of the weekend, a pair of North Dakota drivers are set to kick off
title defenses.

Fargo's Natalie Sather enters the weekend as the reigning ASCS Midwest
Region champion, while Harwood's Lee Grosz kicks off his defense of the
ASCS Northern Plains Region title.

The 23-year-old Sather became the third different ASCS Midwest Region
champion in as many years by outdistancing 2006 Midwest king Toby Chapman
by 64 markers to claim last year's title with Hall-of-Famer Kenny Woodruff
turning the wrenches.

Driving for his grandfather and legendary car owner Doug Howells, Grosz
outlasted Dave Glennon and Eric Lutz for the Northern Plains title in
2007. Now 20 years old, Grosz ranked as the youngest ASCS champion last
year by snaring the championship as a 19-year-old.

Nebraska Raceway Park's I-80 Speedway is located in Greenwood, NE, between
Lincoln and Omaha off I-80 Exit 420, then 0.4 mile north on SR 63 then

The ASCS Midwest Region is currently slated for 11 nights of action at
eight different tracks throughout Nebraska and the immediate surrounding
area stretching into Kansas, Missouri and Iowa.

The ASCS Northern Plains Region is set for 15 nights of racing action at
nine different tracks throughout South Dakota, Minnesota, North Dakota,
Wisconsin, Nebraska and Iowa in 2008.

The nation's most prominent Sprint Car sanctioning body with 14 different
Regions throughout the United States in addition to the O'Reilly American
Sprint Cars on Tour National series, the American Sprint Car Series'
(ASCS) 17th year of activity will include approximately 250 nights of
racing at more than 100 different race tracks throughout 28 different
states and Canada.

Collins takes first win of SLMR season at I-80

Greenwood, NE (April 6, 2008) –Nearly 1000 fans braved the cold weather to watch 126 cars start off the 2008 season during a night filled with yellow flags and rollovers. Mike Collins started on the pole and jumped to an early lead in the Spec Late Model Racing Series, battling multiple yellow flags to take the win. The next stop on the SLMR series schedule is on Sunday, April 20 at I-80 Speedway.

Three drivers started off their IMCA point seasons with wins on the cold Saturday night. Brad Deery (37d) took the Hobby Stock win, ending a r race that included a spectacular flip on the front stretch by the 3k car of Jerry Keaton.

Brett Moffit took the checkered in the Midas Northern Sport Mods and Clint Homan won the Great Clips Modified main event.

McCarl, Collins, Gropp and Macku top Icebreaker Finale

Eagle, NE (April 6, 2008) - Although the weather was cold with a strong
West/Northwest wind, nothing could dampen the excitement of the second day
of the 2008 Icebreaker Challenge at Eagle Raceway; America's Home Track. And
even though the track dried quickly, the racing was fantastic all through
the afternoon and evening. And the crowd stayed warm by rooting on their
favorite drivers, and the racing kept their blood flowing freely.

In the IMCA Hobby Stock A Main, RJ Macku's 1R took the lead from the pole
position with Lee Kracht's 10K in second, the 32 of Trevor Kropp in third
and the 99 of Jesse Sobbing in fourth. On the third lap, Chris Mills spun
his #00c into the infield, giving fourth spot to Justin Wulf in the #86. On
lap #6 Kyle Bond drove his #0 around Wulf for the fourth position. Three
laps later, Kropp made contact with the 28B of Rick Bradley and retired from
the race. That put Wulf back into fourth, behind Macku, Kracht and Bond.
Despite many attempted passes, the top four positions remained the same
until the checkers flew.

Jordan Grabouski's #30 took the early lead in the IMCA Modified A, followed
by the 00C of Chris Mills and the 3 of Chris Alcorn. Mills spun on lap 7,
and was put to the rear of the field. At that time, the running order was
Grabouski, Alcorn, the V45 of Rik Gropp and the #13 of Doug Deterding. Late
in the race, Grabouski spun, and Alcorn dropped from the race shortly after.
That gave the lead to Gropp, with Deterding in second and the 95 of Dylan
Smith in third. Making a charge to the front after being sent to the rear,
Chris Mills came home in third spot behind Deterding and Gropp.

"We may not have been the best car out there, but we were as quick as any"
Gropp said. Gropp has been driving a modified since 1988, but hasn't brought
home a win since the 2005 season at Eagle Raceway. "I owe this win to my car
owner, Kevin Klein; Kevin also sponsors the car through Vermeer High Plains.
And just as much credit goes to my crew. Jeff Williams, Todd Sanford, Travis
Fox and 'DeVito' do a great job for me every week" he stated.

The Deery Brothers Summer Series IMCA Late Model feature was next on the
track. Mike Collins took the point at the drop of the green, with Todd
Cooney's #30 in second spot and the #21 of Corey Goldbeck in third. Collins
managed to hold off the competition in his #3, despite several charges by
Cooney and heavy lapped traffic all of the way around the speedway.

Collins, who calls Council Bluffs Iowa his home, said "I've only raced in 2
Deery Brothers races, and got my first win. I was really afraid of bad luck,
after winning the race at I-80 Speedway last night. But, I just held the
bottom of the track and kept a cool head." "I don't have the motor that a
lot of the drivers have. I'm using a $6500 motor that I just threw together
to go racing. But, I must be doing pretty good, because everyone asks how
I'm cheating. With the track like it was tonight, any more horsepower would
have hurt me a lot" he continued. "Actually, a lot of the credit goes to
Gary Winger. He does all of the setups on the car, and I think I called him
4 or 5 times tonight from the track. I told him what the car was doing, and
he told me what to change. In fact, he built both of my Rocket chassis
himself" Collins stated. Collins' sponsors include Charlie's Speed &
Machine, GW Performance, NC3 Properties and 5150 Race Car Trailers.

The evening's final event was the Budweiser 360 Championship Sprint A
Feature. On the initial start, Larry Pinegar III rolled the #44 in turn #4.
On the restart Terry McCarl took off from the pole position in the Mark
Burch 1M, with Gene Acklund's 14 in second spot, the 76 of Jay Russell and
Billy Alley's #22 in third and fourth. It took Alley only 3 laps to move
into third around Russell and five laps later he overtook Acklund for the
runner-up position. 2 laps later, Brian Brown drove his #21 sprinter around
Acklund to take third. McCarl was challenged several times by Alley, but
came home the victor; followed by Alley and Brown.

"I got lucky, drawing the #1 pill. But, that's happened before; drawing #1
and doing something to mess up and falling back. I kind of read Austin the
riot act for his mistake in the B Feature, and just hoped I didn't do the
same" McCarl stated. "Tonight I managed to do the right thing and take home
the victory" he continued. "Mark Burch gave me such great equipment, just
like he always does. His stuff is the top of the line, every time. So, I
took his advice. I stayed on the bottom and held on" Terry said. "To be
honest, I told Mark I wasn't going to race today when he called me this
morning at 10:30 this morning. I'd driven until 2:30 in the morning, getting
home from the World of Outlaws show in Pevely Missouri and was still asleep
when the phone rang. But, after I talked for awhile, I finally woke up
enough to say yes". "Eagle Raceway's a great track, and I love racing here;
especially for Mark" he finished.

Eagle Raceway's regular season opens in two weeks on April 19th. Featured in
the weekly show are the Championship 360 Sprints, the IMCA Modifieds, the
IMCA Hobby Stocks and the IMCA Sport Compacts. Gates open at 5 P.M., with
hot laps at 6:15 and racing at 7 o'clock. We look forward to seeing each and

Cooney, Dover, Busboom win Eagle Icebreaker Opening night

Mother Nature may have gotten the first word at the first day of the
Icebreaker Challenge, thanks to warm temperatures and a strong unforgiving
south wind; but the racers and fans definitely had the last say as the track
became racier as the event unfolded. Although the 12 heat races were dusty,
by the time the feature races were run, the fastest times of the night were
being run.

The IMCA Sport Compacts A Main was run first. Scott Lee took the early lead
in his #7 with Jake Sells' 21 in second place and Dan Rhiley in third in the
#2. It took Rhiley only 3 laps to pass Sells for second, but just 4 laps
later Rhiley and Lee's 7 made contact which eventually resulted in both cars
leaving the race. That put Sells in first, followed by Justin Busboom in the
#62 and the #26 of Derek Dreamer. Just 2 laps later Busboom took over the
point and held it to the finish line.

Although this is only Justin's 3rd year racing a Sport Compact, he has
already claimed the last two Icebreaker Challenges. "I need to thank my
father, who is my only help with the racecar" Justin said. "I really only
started this to have fun, and thanks to Roger Hadan and the fans, I have
that chance". Justin's sponsors are All Care, Reddick Plumbing and JCM
Electric.

The Budweiser Championship 360 Sprint cars were up next. On the second
attempt at a start the 9N car spun in turn 1, which resulted in the 32 of
Chris Roseland spinning also. Unfortunately Trevor Grossenbacher was left
with nowhere to go and ended up rolling his #35. Fortunately noone was hurt.
On the ensuing restart, two-time defending track champion Mike Boston
snagged the lead in his #51 with the 18 of Ryan Roberts and the 82 of Jason
Danley close behind. Roberts wasted no time moving around Boston as he took
over first place on the second lap with Danley also passing Boston on the
next lap. 2 laps later Jack Dover moved past Boston to snare 3rd. Two more
laps were in the books when a steering component broke on Roberts' sprinter,
causing him to spin and collect Danley. At that time, the running order was
Dover, the #1 of Eric Lutz, the 4 of Mike Chadd and the 51 of Boston. On the
restart Boston slowed in turn 1, moving the 23W of Winters into fourth
position. The next lap Chadd got around Lutz for second, only to be repassed
2 laps later. Chadd and Lutz continued to battle, exchanging positions
several times. On the 14th circuit Don Dround Jr. got around Chadd to take
over third spot. A few laps later Lutz bobbled in turn 4, allowing Droud Jr.
to garner second place. All the while, Dover continued unchallenged for the
win.

"I had a lot of confidence on the drive here, just a really good feeling
about tonight" Dover stated. "Even though we fought the track all night,
guessing on set-ups, we got lucky on the one for the feature and hit it
perfectly" he continued. "I love Eagle Raceway, and wish we could run here
more often. But, we've decided to not run any one track this year. We're
going to just travel quite a bit, giving me time on lots of new tracks. And
that's what I need to improve. We've already been to 7 different tracks this
year in fact" he finished. Dover's sponsors include ATV Motorsports, Keizer,

The final A Feature of the evening saw the IMCA Deery Brothers Summer Series
Late Models on Eagle's high banks. Mike Garland held first place in his G1,
followed by the #42 car and the #30 of Todd Cooney. Action was fast and
furious throughout the field, with 3-wide racing all over the track. On the
third lap #42 moved his car into first, and the next lap Andy Nezworski
moved his #7 into third. 2 laps later the 23R car also passed Cooney to grab
third. On lap 10, the 23R moved into second only to be overtaken by both the
7 and the 30. It took Cooney only 6 more laps to move into first, a position
he held to the end of the race. That did not mean that the racing was over,
because the 23R and the #14 of Dan McLaughlin fought to the bitter end, with
McLaughlin finally crossing the finish line in second place behind Cooney.

"I couldn't believe how well the track came in. By feature time, you could
run anywhere; high, low or through the middle. It just took patience, and I
lost mine in the beginning. I ended up hitting the wall because I tried to
go where I shouldn't have, and really I should have lost the race. But, I
backed off, settled down and just kept moving up."

Collins collects top Deery cash Sunday at Eagle

EAGLE, Neb. (April 6) – A first-time winner emerged from night two of
the Deery Brothers Summer Series doubleheader during Eagle Raceway’s
Ice Breaker Challenge weekend.

Mike Collins led all 35 times around the track to top Sunday’s IMCA J
& J Steel Late Model tour event, earning the $2,000 checkers ahead of
Saturday victor Todd Cooney.

After taking the initial green from outside row one, Collins edged
inside pole starter Ben Nading and set sail, sticking to the low
groove and bringing Cooney along into lapped traffic.

Scattered cautions flew throughout the race, with Collins holding
Cooney at bay after each re-start.

Mike Klinkhammer was third across the finish line, chased by 10th
starting Boone McLaughlin and Darrel DeFrance.

Andy Nezworski made the most progress through the field, from 22nd to
10th, after qualifying through his “B” feature.

After making its first-ever visits to Eagle, the series returns to
more familiar venues next weekend with an April 12-13 doubleheader at
34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, and at Quincy, Ill., Raceway.

Gates at 34 open at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, with hot laps at 6:30 p.m.
and racing at 7 p.m.

IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars are also on the Sunday program at Quincy,
where gates open at 4 p.m., hot laps start at 6 p.m. and racing is at
6:30 p.m.

Cooney captures Deery Series opener at Eagle

EAGLE, Neb. (April 5) – Todd Cooney proved up to the challenge in
Saturday’s opening night Deery Broth ers Summer Series feature for
IMCA J & J Steel Late Models at Eagle Raceway.

Cooney followed the top groove in catching leader Tom Darbyshire on
the 15th circuit, then led to the finish of the 35-lapper for a
$1,000 payday. The tour victory was his career fifth and headlined
the first of two Ice Breaker Challenge programs at Eagle this weekend.

“B” qualifier Boone McLaughlin made his way through the 24-car field
to finish second. Craig Roberts was third and Jason Frankel, another
qualifier from the “B” mains, ended in fourth.

Rounding out the top five was Mike Klinkhammer.

Mike Garland drew the pole and led the opening lap before giving way
to Darbyshire,

After a lap three caution, Darbyshire got settled into the fast lower
line but couldn’t shake Cooney, who found his way past on the high side.

The front pair got into lapped traffic before the second and last
caution of the contest came on lap 19. Cooney stayed in command
following the re-start and McLaughlin, Roberts, Frankel and
Klinkhammer mo tored by Darbyshire.

McLaughlin would get the edge in the battle for second but couldn’t
challenge Cooney in the race to the checkers. He’d finish a plus 18
spots on the night while Frankel moved up 13 places from his original
starting position.

Top prize for the Sunday Deery feature is $2,000. IMCA Modifieds,
IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks and sprint cars round out the program. The
Modified winner pockets $1,000 and joins the ballot for the 2008 Fast
Shafts All-Star Invitational.

Pit gates open at 11 a.m., hot laps are at 2 p.m. and racing starts
at 3 p.m.

Saturday’s race was the first at Eagle in the series’ 21-plus seasons.

Greenwood, NE (March 14, 2008) -Dirt racing fans in eastern Nebraska and
western Iowa will hear engines come to life at Nebraska's I-80 Speedway on
Saturday, April 5 with the $2000 to win premiere night of the Spec Late
Model Racing Series (SLMR). Joining the SLMR will be the IMCA Modifieds,
Northern Sport Mods and Hobby stocks for their opening IMCA point nights at
the track.

"This series will usher in a new era of local late model racing as top
drivers from the Midwest region compete at area tracks bringing more
opportunities for area race fans to see their favorite late model stars,"
said Ed Kosiski, track promoter. "The SLMR class combines the best of late
model drivers who have raced in such classes as local NASCAR Super Late
Model Series, IMCA Late Models and other touring series."

The SLMR season opener will feature a $2000 to win, 25 lap feature race. The
IMCA Modifieds, Northern Sport Mods and Hobby Stocks will race for their
regular weekly purse.

Racing action is slated to get under way at 7:00 pm with hot laps at 6:30
pm. The pit gate opens at 3:30 pm and the grandstands open at 5:30 p.m.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for juniors 13-18, $1 for kids 5-12, and
under 5 are free. Entry fee for SLMR drivers is $50 including pit pass, $20
for all IMCA drivers, and $20 for all others entering the pits.

The next SLMR show is scheduled for Sunday, April 20 at I-80 Speedway. Other
tracks on the schedule for the series include: Park Jefferson Speedway,
Junction Motor Speedway and Boone County Speedway with other tracks to be
added soon.

I-80 Practice Canceled

Friday's (April 4) practice night is cancelled due to rain.

Saturday (April 5) night's races will depend on how soon we can get back on
the track to get it properly prepared for our racers so we don't tear up
race cars. We are trying to reschedule practice night.

1) Cars will be allowed to arrive beginning at 8 AM
2) All tow rigs will enter at Uncle Ron's East Parking lot located at the
second driveway after N 1st St from Westbound Cornhusker Hwy.
3) You will then proceed through the lot Westbound up the alley to Uncle
Ron's main Parking lot.
4) You will then be directed where to unload for your display. (There may be
several ahead of you so please be patient).
5) Please let us know if you are racing at 5PM so we can put you in the area
designated for early departure. This applies to Late Models, Sprints and
Sport compacts only.
6) Once you are unloaded, your tow rig will proceed out Uncle Ron's West
driveway, and turn left onto NW 4th St.
7) You will then hit Cornhusker HWY again. Turn left and proceed Eastbound
back to 1st St.
8) Turn right on 1st, and proceed South to where you will be directed where
to park.
9) There will be a shuttle vehicle to bring drivers back to the display
area.

Getting the word out and false marketing

Marketing is the process of determining customer wants, fulfilling those wants and move customers to your product.

Advertising, public relations, research, retailing, etc. are all REQUIRED parts of the equation.

Regardless of the time available to conduct all this, if you aren’t meeting all these expectations, you are not marketing.

If you are limiting your communication about future events to message boards or niche sites (like this one!) and hoping that others spread the word for you, you are not advertising. No press? Buy ads. Can't afford ads? Go to places personally. Can't get out there? Get someone who can.

If you aren’t communicating with your fans (your customers), your racers (your customers), about the things you’re doing that aren’t just promoting the next event (that’s advertising) then you are not practicing public relations. If you aren’t managing ALL your channels of communication (print, online, radio and TV), then you aren’t doing public relations. Bad press? Get the word out. Poor image? Communicate the positive. Always reacting? Be proactive. Can't write? Find someone. Can't find anything positive? You got bigger problems.

If you are not looking at your previous events and seeing what works and what didn’t, what shows did well and what do not, what makes money and what doesn’t and you aren’t looking for feedback from your customers, then you aren’t doing research. Have a show that doesn't get crowds? Ask why and be honest, think about why YOU would want to attend. Put yourself in the customer's shoes, ask the customer. Ask the POTENTIAL customer as well.

If you don’t know how to accommodate your customers with a pleasant experience, access to your goods and services (like seats, concessions, pit space, hell – the PA system), then you are not retailing. Weather killing your shows? Look at your scheduling. People leave early? How long is your program? Concessions not selling? Look at your prices and product.

If you are just doing a few of these things, you aren’t marketing.

If you do small parts of these things, and still don’t have the crowd and the cars, you aren’t marketing hard enough.

You need to grow beyond message boards, niche sites, pretty pictures, gladhanding buddies at racing events. If this is all you do, you aren’t marketing, at the best, you are performing small parts of the components of marketing and if you can't do it all, you aren't doing anything.

The old saying goes, "one finger pointing at me, three pointing back at you." The press didn't give you empty grandstands, the TV didn't give you a bad track, the message board didn't run off your cars. YOU didn't put on a show worth seeing, YOU didn't get the word out, YOU didn't give a reason for cars to attend, YOU and only you didn't overcome the obstacles presented.

The difference between the ‘Field of Dreams’ and ‘Field of Reality’ is that the ghosts were already in the field of dreams. The rest of the world has to bring them to the park.

And the way to bring them in is with marketing - REAL marketing.

IMCA Stock Car state champs take home TCI awards

ASHLAND, Miss. (April 1) - TCI Automotive expands its contingency
program again this season, with new awards for state champions in the
IMCA Sunoco Stock Car division.

Each state champion in the class will receive a $150 product
certificate from the Ashland, Miss., transmission and drive train
components manufacturer.

TCI will also give more than $4,000 in contingencies based on final
national point standings for the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod,
Southern SportMod, Stock and Hobby Stock classes.

First place in each division pays $500, with $250 for second, $125
for third, $100 for fourth and $50 for fifth.

Drivers must compete with a TCI-made transmission, valve body or pump
drive (or torque converter for Hobby Stocks), display two TCI decals
on their race car and return a sign-up form to the IMCA home office
by Aug. 1 to be eli-gible.

"With brand new sign-up forms in the Karl Chevrolet Northern and
Southern SportMod divisions this year, we will be able to track TCI
awards as we have done in other divisions in the past," IMCA
Marketing Director Kevin Yoder said. "In addition, by adding more
Stock Car awards TCI continues to strengthen its position with IMCA
racers in each class."

JMS Test and Tune April 5

Test and Tune Day will be at Junction Motor Speedway this Saturday April 5th
from 1 to 5 PM. Pit gate will be $15. Pit gates will open at Noon.

“Super Hi-Intensity Action Truck” class coming in 2009
Omaha, Neb (March 31, 2008) – Track owners and promoters from Eagle Raceway, I-80 Speedway, and Junction Motor Speedway have introduced a spec, touring series of All-American pickup class that will begin racing in 2009. The class will be sanctioned by a joint body of the promoters, the name to be decided by a fan vote, to be held at the opening night of each track’s weekly season.

The Super Hi-Intensity Action Truck class will combine high-horsepower, spec motors with heavily modified, late-model pickup chassis in a tightly-controlled and highly competitive class.

In a joint statement, the promoters believe that this class will create a new example of twenty-first century racing. From the joint statement: “We need to get with the times. The pickup is the vehicle of choice amongst our fans, and it’s the only true rear-wheel-drive vehicle left on a mass-production basis. It will finally settle the question if whether or not ‘that thing’s got a hemi’ really matters.

“More importantly,” the statement continued, “we’ve looked at the state of premier classes such as Super Late Models and 360 Sprint cars. Nobody can agree to anything about the rules, the costs and so on. Why continue down this path?

“The new class will be heavily policed and monitored. It will create even more opportunities to get more racers on board with so much competition that fans will swear winning comes out of blind luck or that it's fixed. Of course, we're following the NASCAR model which has been the only way racing can really be run anymore.”

The pickups will maintain the basic designs of the Dodge Ram, Chevy Silverado and Ford F-Series, with significant competition and safety modifications. Powering the rear-wheel drive trucks will be spec, manufacturer specific motors, guaranteed to dyno ‘over 700 horesepower’ according to the promoter coalition.

Also featured on the trucks will be World of Outlaws Sprint Car style wings, with a 30-square foot rule, to accommodate the larger wheelbases of the pickup trucks. Other unique features include a cut out bed to allow for open rear wheels, driven by spec-wide bodied tires, to be designed by Hoosier – a respected name in racing tires. At this point the coalition is deciding whether or not to run without roofs, to give a better view of the driver.

In the prepared statement the promoter coalition felt that the time has come to create a new class of vehicle unlike any other and one that will finally bridge the gap between open wheel and stock car fans. As a bonus the huge body panels of the truck and wing will allow for huge amounts of “rolling billboard” space for sponsors.

To begin the series, a unique blend of cooperation has come forth with each track taking a rotating schedule of shows. Also, fans will be treated with an incentive to come see the new trucks, when each track will offer free front gate admission on nights when the class is running.

According the promoter coalition, they feel they can make up lost gate revenue from fans “in pit gate fees, concessions and alcohol sales.” The first race at each track will also feature a prominent NASCAR Sprint Cup Series star behind the wheel, in full competition.
