ASCS Midwest Region Ready for Rising City on Friday

for the American Sprint Car Series Midwest Region with another
critical Nebraska stop this Friday night as the series takes to Rising
City's Butler County Motorplex.

Entering the event, Lincoln, Nebraska's Don Droud, Jr., has climbed to
the top of the series championship point charts with a slim 12-point
lead over Missouri's Brian Brown.
Nebraska native Rick Ideus is just another 14 points back in fourth,
with South Dakota's Clint Garner and Kansan J.D. Johnson rounding out
the current top five. The balance of the current top ten includes
North Dakotan Natalie Sather and South Dakotan Chuck Swenson followed
by the Nebraska trio of Mike Chadd, Stu Snyder and defending series
champion Toby Chapman.
Three different drivers have reached ASCS Midwest Region victory lane
in as many events thus far in 2007, including Brian Brown, Chuck
Swenson and Garry Lee Maier. Maier, who topped this past weekend's
event at McCool Junction, won last season's ASCS Midwest Region event
at the Butler County Motorplex.
Friday racing action kicks off at 8:00 p.m.
The high-banked, 3/8-mile Butler County Motorplex dirt oval is located
in Rising City, NE, eight miles south of US 30 on US 81, then two
miles east on CR 38, then 0.7 miles south on CR C, then east. For

The ASCS Midwest Region 2007 slate consists of eleven events at seven
different tracks throughout Nebraska and the immediately surrounding
area.
The 2007 season marks the 16th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing

tracks throughout at least 30 different states and Canada.

The Pace Lap - May 29, 2007
I've got a cynical tongue today...
-Last week saw a lot of bent sheet metal at Eagle Raceway. Interestingly, this was the first week a Sport Compact didn't roll. Lots of fender banging, bump jumping action if you're into that thing. I'm not. Given the amount of rain that fell on the track, they were lucky to get the show off. They still are having issues with the track rutting up and after talking to Roger Hadan, he's very concerned about the issue. Anyone who thinks he's content with it is wrong.
A fix at intermission trying to roll in the ruts helped some, but they came back as the small-tired cars cut new ones in the track. I'm not placing blame on them though, but it did lead to a question that maybe the sprints should run their heats/features first in these situations. I'm sure there will some of the "premier class" fans whining but several racers and officials I talked to say it's better than the alternative.

-Let me preface this next comment by saying I do not blame Junction Motor Speedway or Delmar Friesen. I want to make that clear before I go on because I'm not going to be nice.
OK, here goes: the car count at the POWRi midget show on Friday was pathetic. Eleven cars went out for heats with 13 coming out for the A feature. That's awful and I place the blame on POWRi. I hope for JMS's sake that they have a clause in the contract that deducts from the sanctioning fee if a car count isn't met. And the thing is, that does no justice to the fans who paid a premium ($15) to see a two-class premier level show and got 1 1/2.
It's not the promoter's job to bring in these cars for other sanctioning bodies. As I've said over and over: it's like asking the mayor to provide the elephants when the circus comes to town.
My feeling is this: if it's your show be it weekly or your own special then yes it is the promoter's duty to bring the cars. But once you have to pay that magical sanctioning fee, that fee that one has to pay for the "privilege" of having that group come to your track, it becomes that group's responsibility to hold up their end of the bargain to the promoter. Anything less is not fair to the promoter and worse, not fair to the fans.
A red flag in the midget A feature brought a smattering of drama and created a nine-lap battle that partially redeemed the show. But as a fan, I'd be demanding something back. Maybe I'm too picky. Maybe three cars battling for nine laps is a good show to some midget fans.
But for a promoter, where the lion's share of the purse is in that top 15, it's a hell of a price to pay to fuel the fantasies of a few fans. I hope they appreciate what Delmar's done, sticking his head into a financial guillotine.
I swear that after the lights went down I saw someone in full Native American dress dancing in the infield chanting toward the sky and clouds started rolling in....
The ASCS/NCRA sprints represented well, with an ideal 36 car count. I just wish they'd invert at least a couple of rows in the A feature...the passing point lineup system is OK up until the fast guy sits on the pole. The racing was not great, but not horrible. Watching Toby Chapman race to the front in the B feature was fun. And Natalie Sather did a great job holding her own for a fifth place finish. She was also more than gracious to all the well wishers and fans wanting her autograph and picture afterwards.
I just wish that these sanctioning bodies would start to look to produce better shows for the fans. I CAN'T be the only one who thinks this?
-Speaking of car counts, there is much uncertainty regarding the first non-wing show at Eagle this coming Saturday, especially with the recent track condition. Will the fans accept the non-winged cars at a likely reduced car count? I know there is concern on the part of Eagle Raceway - but I have to give him credit for trying. He does have a sponsor commitment - if the show falls flat will it go on?
But what if it does succeed? What next? It will throw another variable into weekly racing's future. Either way there will be some tough decisions to be made for promoters.
-I spent my late hours Saturday night/Sunday morning in the race trailer of former driver, car owner, trailer race Grand Champion and all-around good guy Dennis Parker. One interesting question came up while our group was talking: of all the cars he's driven, be it stock, late model, sprint, or midget what was his favorite?
The answer: "A midget, by far."
I regret not asking why.
-The one night only World of Outlaws show is coming to Eagle Raceway next Saturday. My personal opinion is that if one looks at this in terms of supply and demand economics, this one-night, one-chance only show could be a blockbuster. If it's not, the question becomes how much interest in the WoO does this current Eagle Raceway market really have?
-Better news: Stu Snyder had a great weekend in the Beers' #2d sprinter this weekend with runner-up finishes in North Platte (Lincoln County) and Wakeeney, KS, finishing runner up to Garry Lee Maier, who swept the weekend's racing.
-Jay Russell has finished in the top three of the sprint A feature each week at Eagle Raceway, except for the night he flipped in his heat race. He picked up his first win of the season on Saturday night.
-I'm mad I missed the Alphabet Soup race at I-80 Sunday. Sounded like a hell of a show with much drama. Kelly Boen and Terry Phillips had a to-do on the front stretch with Boen getting tossed out and Al Purkey taking the win on the final lap. 66 cars made the trip. Regardless of which sanctioning bodies are part of the show, this has become one of the "must see" events on the racing calendar.

Lancaster County leaders have decided to hear a proposal for a drag strip
July 31, a week later than originally planned.

Lancaster County leaders have decided to hear a proposal for a drag strip
July 31, a week later than originally planned.
The County Board last week had decided to consider Greg Sanford's plans for
a quarter-mile strip off U.S. 77 between Branched Oak and Davey roads during
a July 24 meeting.
Board Chairman Bob Workman said Tuesday the commissioners agreed to push it
back a week because of a commissioner's scheduling conflict.
"We feel it is important for all of us to be there for that hearing," he
said.
Unchanged is a hearing for a amendment the board must hear before they can
consider Sanford's proposal.
The county's zoning code doesn't address motor sports. An amendment would
lay the foundation for regulations governing any separately-approved motor
sports facility.
Purkey Passes Payne; Boen and Phillips Tangle at I-80 Soup Race

(GREENWOOD NEB., 05/27/07) On a perfect night for racing, 66 late models
packed the pits at I-80 Speedway for the 2007 edition of the Alphabet Soup
Race presented by Dodge. From spills to thrills and everything in between,
the 50 lap feature would become an instant classic.
The Alphabet Soup Race started with Missouri driver Terry Phillips on the
pole. Phillips would jump to an early lead, but as lap one concluded the
"big one" occurred. Gary Stoble and Craig Preble, who started in the front
of the field, would both spin down the front straightaway. When it all came
to a stop over a half dozen cars sat piled in turn one including Colorado
driver Kelly Boen who was on top of another car. However with little damage
Boen would be able to return to the race starting in the rear.
When the green waved again it was Phillips who again took the point. As the
halfway point was reached it was still Phillips, but the car that was on the
move was Kelly Boen. Boen would charge through the field and on lap 39 pass
Phillips coming out of turn two. Entering turn three Phillips would hit Boen
causing him to spin, the #90 of Steve Kempt then had no where to go and
drove into the side of Boen's #07. As the race was red flagged, Boen leaped
from his car and ran down the track after Phillips. Track Officials would
hold back Boen and Phillips would drive to the flag stand where he was
thrown out of the race. Boen would then make his way to front straightaway
where he received cheers from the entire grandstands. As the race got back
underway it was Jeremy Payne who was in the lead, followed by Al Purkey and
John Anderson. Payne kept the lead until the white flag lap.
Purkey was on Payne's bumper when entering turn three when he drove to the
bottom. Purkey's #33 would stick and he would drive pass Payne coming off of
turn four and win by a car length. Payne was followed by Larry Clawson, John
Anderson, and Kyle Berck.
Kyle Berck would win the 30 lap $1000 to win Modified "A" feature. Berck
would be followed by Johnny Saathoff who won the first "B" feature. Jeremy
Rasmussen would finish third, Matt Richards came home fourth, and Greg Netz
finished fifth. Chris Spieker and Jason Friesen would make contact on the
final lap causing Spieker to spin down the back straightaway. Spieker
finished 10th and Friesen was put back to 11th for the contact.
Al Humphrey continued his dominance winning his third straight race and
second race of the weekend at I-80 in the City Weekly Grand Nationals.
Humphrey would take the lead a few laps into the race after starting sixth,
but halfway in the #9 of Dave Cook would take the lead from Humphrey.
Humphrey then found his groove, made it pass Cook and to victory lane. Cook,
Jason Hobscheidt, Ron Tilley, and Gary Leapley rounded out the top five.

Humphrey Wins Opening Night Crate Late Model Feature at I-80 Speedway

(GREENWOOD NEB., 05/26/07) On opening night of the Saturday NASCAR
Whelen All-American Series at I-80 Speedway, over 110 cars checked in
the pit gate in seven different classes, with the entire race program
being complete in a little over three hours. Al Humphrey, Scotty
Hartman, Scott Carlson, Trish Dover, Austin Kurtzer, Jase Kaser, and
Kenny Danley all visited victory lane on Cass County Night at the speedway.
The 20 lap Great Clips Crate Late Model "A" Feature event saw the #55 of
Al Humphrey drive from the sixth starting spot to victory lane. Humphrey
would pass pole sitter Todd Morgan for the lead near the halfway point
and never look back on route to the winners circle. Morgan finished
second followed by Jason Hobscheidt, Dave Doll, and Shawn Harker.
The Ty's Outdoor Power Equipment 18 lap Pro Stock "A" main event looked
to be in the bag for front row starter Larry Robinson Jr. Robinson would
jump out to an early lead, and would stretch it further as the first 15
laps went caution free. With five laps remaining the #48 of Robinson
would start showing smoke, and when the caution came out with three laps
to go Larry Jr. would pull into the pit area with a broken engine. With
the #48 out of the picture, that gave the race to the #88 of Scotty
Hartman. Hartman would finish out the event on his way to victory. Nick
Steier would hold off Joe Feyen for second, Shawn Bulin and Rich Steier
rounded out the top five.
The 15 lap Midas B-Mods seen veteran Scott Carlson take the win. Carlson
would battle the #48o of Greg Tichey, and the #21 of Jim Fritz in the
closing laps and would hold on after using the high line. Tichey, Fritz,
Harry Nixon, and the #z00 of Lacey Tuttle finished in the top five.
Trish Dover would win the 12 lap Midwest Lining 305 Sprint Car "A" main.
Dan Satriano would be the only other car to finish as three of the five
cars has mechanical problems.
The #57 of Austin Kurtzer would hold off Jeff Joldersma and Peter Fink
in the 12 lap Stereo West Auto Toys Pro Hornet "A" main. Over twenty
five cars would show in the highly competitive Pro Hornet division.
Rising sprint car star Jack Dover would win the first ever Novice Crate
Late Model "A" Feature. Steve Sanders would finish second followed by
Jase Kaser, Ryan Gladwin, and Lindsey Yost. However in post race
inspection both Dover and Sanders would have the wrong rev limiting
chip. With both drivers being disqualified, 14 year old Jase Kaser would
be declared the winner after finishing third.
"The Redhead Wonder" Kenny Danley visited victory lane in the 8 Lap
Stereo West Auto Toys Novice Hornet Feature event. Alex Fink would
finish second after contact with Thomas Liechti on the last last.
Liechti came home third.

Eagle Raceway 5-26 Results

Russell, Alcorn, Kropp and Prall Stir it Up at the High Bank 1/3 Mile
Eagle, Neb. (May 26, 2007) - KQBW-THE BREW’S Fan Appreciation Night at America’s Home Track, Eagle Raceway saw an extremely large crowd in attendance Saturday night. The fans were treated to 5 heats in the Monster Energy Drink IMCA modifieds, 3 heats of Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA sport compacts, 2 heats of Valentino’s IMCA hobby stocks and 4 heats of Budweiser Championship 360 sprints. In addition, Bobby Cox was on hand to entertain those in attendance with his slapstick style of comedy and stunts.
Although Eagle saw 2 inches of rain, the track was extremely fast and very racy. In the 4th heat of the Budweiser Championship 360 sprints, Mike Boston drove his 51 sprinter to within 1/100 of a second of his own track record.
The evening’s feature events started with the Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA sport compacts. Jason Tadlock broke out in front, with the 45 of Jack Prall IV and Maynard Kinnersley’s 18 in hot pursuit. The race featured 3 and 4 wide racing throughout. With only 10 laps to go, Prall moved into the lead. 2 laps later, Kinnersley took the point for a short time, followed by current points leader Kyle Schamp’s 2K following him into 2nd place. With just 5 laps left Schamp moved beside Kinnersley and the two swapped the lead until Schamp took over first with just 2 laps to go. At the finish line, it was Schamp, Prall, Kinnersley and the 0 of Rich White. Schamp’s victory was erased however, when he was moved back 2 positions for rough driving.
Afterwards, Prall said “I hate winning that way, but I’ll take it”. This was Prall’s second A Feature win in a row. “I’ve only been racing for 2 years, and last year I split duties in the car with my dad. He won the Nebraska Cup in it last year, then wrecked it in the sport compact Enduro” Prall stated. “He told me I could have it, and we worked all winter getting it ready for this season. Now, he tells me he wants it back; but he’s not getting it” Jack said. He related that “Even though the track was rough, all you had to do was find the smooth line and you were fast”. Jack’s sponsors include Peterson’s, Innovative Vinyl Design, Cut Rite Services, Beaver Lake Marina, and Ron’s Automotive.
On the very first lap of the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stock A, Rick Bradley’s cooling system was ruptured when he tangled with the 20 of Chad Borgman. On the restart, the 19 of Kyle Vanover jumped into the lead, followed by the 32 of Trevor Kropp and the 21 of Derick Noonan. Vanover held the lead until with just 9 laps left he suffered a flat right rear tire and spun in turns 1 & 2. This moved Kropp into first place and Noonan into second. With only 2 laps remaining Noonan retired. This moved the 1R of RJ Macku into second and Casey Moyer’s 38C into third. On the last circuit, Moyer got around Macku for 2nd, with Kropp taking the checkers.
“I really don’t know what to say” Trevor stated. “This is just my second feature win ever. My first was last year, and that was on Fan Appreciation Night too. I’ve only been racing for 3 years now, and I’m speechless.” he said. “I do want to thank my sponsors; Low Budget Chassis & Graphics, A & N Bar, Hair by Elle, Westside Wizard, Auto Shop Inc., TY’s Tobacco Corner, Murphy Distributing, www.warnerdist.com and Spady/Runcy Chevrolet & Cadillac. The Monster Energy Drinks IMCA Modified A Feature barely got under way when the B9 of Sean Burkland lost his left rear tire coming out of turn 4. This caused an 8-car pileup, directly in front of the flag stand. Cars involved were the 13, 95, B9, 55, 76, 1R, 11AA and 19J. When racing resumed, the Z62 of Dan McKeighan took the lead, followed by the 30 of Jordan Grabouski, Dan Nelson’s 94 and the 3 of defending track champion Chris Alcorn. Terry Hurt ran hard into the front stretch wall, sending him to the pits. Alcorn made short work of the cars in front of him after that, moving into 1st place shortly very quickly. He was followed by Grabouski, Nelson and McKeighan. With 15 laps left, the 76 of Lance Bergman passed McKeighan to take over 4th spot. With only 4 laps to go, Nelson moved into third, with Bergman in fourth and the B9 of Burkland moving into the fifth spot; having moved through the field after changing his tire. Due to time constraints, the race was shortened to a Green/White/Checkered finish, with Alcorn taking home the big check.
“The track was rough in spots tonight, and honestly I’m worn out” Chris stated. After starting
6th row outside position in the B Feature and 8th row outside in the A, Alcorn demonstrated why he is the defending Modified Champion. “I’m not complaining about the results” he said, “but I’d like to have an easier time of it once in awhile.” “This is the third week in a row we couldn’t finish our heat race, and had to come through the B,” he added.
The Budweiser Championship 360 Sprint A-Main saw 3 of the “Young Guns” at Eagle on the front row. Trevor Grossenbacher’s 35 and Jordan Boston’s 2 were in the front 2 rows for the event, along with another rookie, Frank Galusha in the 24B. Galusha took the lead on the initial start; but his lead was short-lived when Tige Jensen rolled between turns 3 & 4. On the restart, Galusha again jumped out front; but on the second lap he ended up running through the infield, coming out in second place. 2 laps later, Nick Bryan spun, and the 24B of Galusha was sent to the pits. By that time, Jay Russell had moved his 76 sprinter into third spot.
With 16 laps to go, Russell moved into 2nd position and 3 laps later into 1st. Russell was followed by the 19J of Jay Jordan and Mike Boston’s 51. As a testament to the track conditions, Boston ran a lap in the Feature only 6/10’s of a second off of his track record. With 8 laps left, Boston moved into second position; and eventually into 1st place with just 2 laps remaining. Jay Russell took his #76 under Boston on the final lap in turns 1 & 2 and held on for the win.
Russell, who makes a 2 ¼ hour haul to Eagle Raceway every
Saturday night, has been racing since he was 12 years old. “I started in go karts for 4 years, then spent 1 year in mini-sprints. Ever since then, I’ve been racing 360 sprints” Jay said. “Last year was my first full year at Eagle, after having run Osborn and Savannah, Missouri before that. My first Feature win here was last year on the Hall of Fame night, but this one is even better,” he stated. Jay also said “We’ve run in the top 3 every feature this year, with the exception of the night we crashed in our heat race. We’ve actually led every A-Main we’ve been in, but this is our first win this year”.
“We’re leaving here tonight and towing home before heading to California, Missouri’s XX Speedway tomorrow night to run with the WoW sprints. I’ve never run there, but I heard it’s a really racy place. I hope it’s as good as Eagle” he finished.

6th row outside position in the B Feature and 8th row outside in the A, Alcorn demonstrated why he is the defending Modified Champion. “I’m not complaining about the results” he said, “but I’d like to have an easier time of it once in awhile.” “This is the third week in a row we couldn’t finish our heat race, and had to come through the B,” he added.The Budweiser Championship 360 Sprint A-Main saw 3 of the “Young Guns” at Eagle on the front row. Trevor Grossenbacher’s 35 and Jordan Boston’s 2 were in the front 2 rows for the event, along with another rookie, Frank Galusha in the 24B. Galusha took the lead on the initial start; but his lead was short-lived when Tige Jensen rolled between turns 3 & 4. On the restart, Galusha again jumped out front; but on the second lap he ended up running through the infield, coming out in second place. 2 laps later, Nick Bryan spun, and the 24B of Galusha was sent to the pits. By that time, Jay Russell had moved his 76 sprinter into third spot.
With 16 laps to go, Russell moved into 2nd position and 3 laps later into 1st. Russell was followed by the 19J of Jay Jordan and Mike Boston’s 51. As a testament to the track conditions, Boston ran a lap in the Feature only 6/10’s of a second off of his track record. With 8 laps left, Boston moved into second position; and eventually into 1st place with just 2 laps remaining. Jay Russell took his #76 under Boston on the final lap in turns 1 & 2 and held on for the win.
Russell, who makes a 2 ¼ hour haul to Eagle Raceway every
Saturday night, has been racing since he was 12 years old. “I started in go karts for 4 years, then spent 1 year in mini-sprints. Ever since then, I’ve been racing 360 sprints” Jay said. “Last year was my first full year at Eagle, after having run Osborn and Savannah, Missouri before that. My first Feature win here was last year on the Hall of Fame night, but this one is even better,” he stated. Jay also said “We’ve run in the top 3 every feature this year, with the exception of the night we crashed in our heat race. We’ve actually led every A-Main we’ve been in, but this is our first win this year”.“We’re leaving here tonight and towing home before heading to California, Missouri’s XX Speedway tomorrow night to run with the WoW sprints. I’ve never run there, but I heard it’s a really racy place. I hope it’s as good as Eagle” he finished.

(May 25, 2007) - Keith Rauch of Edgewater, Colorado captures his first O’Reilly POWRi National Midget Feature on Friday night on the fast semi-banked 3/8-mile Junction Motor Speedway dirt oval in McCool Junction , NE. Rauch was driving the Tony Rossi Spike/Gaerte midget on this evening. Ryan Durst, Brad Kuhn, Chad McDaniel and Mike Hess rounded out the top 5.

Maier Masters ASCS Midwest Region at McCool Junction
Lonnie Wheatley, McCOOL JUNCTION, Neb. (May 25, 2007) – Garry Lee Maier added yet another American Sprint Car Series feature win to his resume by posting by an impressive victory in Friday night's 25-lap ASCS Midwest Region main event at Junction Motor Speedway.
The first ASCS National champion in 1992, Maier added his second ASCS Midwest Region feature victory to 37 National wins and several other Regional wins with a wire-to-wire drive aboard the Wesmar-powered Lubbock Wreck Service No. 11x Maxim.
Maier gunned into the lead at the outset, opening up a half straightaway lead in the opening three rounds. His pace was not deterred even when he hit lapped traffic after 14 laps, as he sliced through lapped traffic and ultimately took the checkered flag with a straightaway advantage over Brian Brown, who took the runner-up position from Derek Drown at the midway point.
With Brown, the winningest driver in ASCS Midwest Region history, taking second, Drown took show honors. Gregg Bakker crossed the stripe fourth, with Natalie Sather rounding out the top five.
Don Droud, Jr., moved atop the ASCS Midwest Region point standings with a sixth-place run, with Ryan Anderson, 2005 ASCS Midwest Region champion Billy Alley, J.D. Johnson and defending series champion Toby Chapman completing the top ten.
Anderson, Marc Robe, Brown and Maier topped heat race action for the 37-car field, with A.J. Selenke winning the first "B" Main before Chapman charged from the rear of the field to win the second "B" Main.

Grabouski, Behrends among Red Cloud winners

RED CLOUD, NE (May 25)—With only two caution flags all night long, the
racing action went quickly at The Speed Bowl in Red Cloud, NE, Friday
evening, May 25.
Beatrice's Jordan Grabouski found his way to victory lane in the IMCA
Modified feature. Hometown driver Lonnie Schriner was reeling in
Grabouski but had to settle for second. Troy Johnson, Brandon
Blochlinger and Brian Calhoon rounded out the top five. Heat race
winners were Johnson, Schriner and Blochlinger.
Brett Behrends of Webber, KS, passed race long leader Chad Wulf in the
final turn on the final lap of the IMCA Stock Car feature to win by a
nose. Heat race winners Martin Newlin and Jared Remus finished third and
fourth, followed by Wayne Walker.
Blue Hill's Jim Buss scored his second IMCA Hobby Stock feature win at
the 3/8-mile oval as he beat Rhett Kingsbury to the checkers. Heat one
winner Delbert Selvage finished third, followed by Rocky Zimmerman and
Wade Wagenblast. Buss won the other heat race.
Josh & Chris Graczyk of Elm Creek picked up their first Cruiser feature
win of the season at Red Cloud. Heat race winners Adam Sidlo & E.J.
Kothe were second, followed by David Theer & Troy Himmelberg.
The regular five divisions return this Friday night, June 1. Racing

NCRA Sprints Roll into Junction Motor Speedway
PARK CITY, Kan. – In addition to picnics and barbeque, Memorial Day weekend
at Junction Motor Speedway means action with the O'Reilly NCRA Sprint Car
Series, presented by ICM/Ethanol, as they make their first-ever appearance
May 25 on the McCool Junction oval.

Two different drivers have taken the NCRA's first two checkers of the
season. Lincoln's Don Droud Jr., driving for Ochs Racing out of Jetmore,
Kan., won the May 12 Steve King Memorial Race at Dodge City (Kan.) Raceway
Park, their last show.
It was Droud's first-ever NCRA victory, allowing him to move in front of
second-place finisher Chuck Swenson and take over the point lead by 10
markers. Swenson won the April 12 season opener at Nebraska Raceway Park,
with Droud in the runner-up spot.
Two-time defending series champion Garry Lee Maier, seeking his fourth title
overall, was ninth in the opener but collided with Lincoln's Mike Chadd on

Update: NCRA's Boen cleared to race this weekend
According to Kelly Boen's website, he's been cleared to race this weekend at
Mid Nebraska and I-80 Speedway. Earlier reports indicated that the two-time
defending NCRA Late Model champ would miss this weekends races due to an
injury suffered in an April 28 crash at Lakeside Speedway.

"Double Points" Memorial Day Race Weekend on the fast semi-banked, 3/8-mile
Junction Motor Speedway dirt oval in McCool Junction, NE. The POWRi Midgets
are coming off a big weekend, which saw Tony Stewart's Driver Rick
Stenhouse,Jr top a stellar field of 52 entries at Tri-State Speedway in an
event co-sanctioned with USAC .
POWRi points leader Mike Hess leads the way into Friday's event with a

ASCS Midwest Region Tunes up Friday at McCool Junction

O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series in just over three
weeks, the stars of the American Sprint Car Series Midwest Region will hone
their skills with an outing at Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction,
NE, this Friday night May 25th.

The card marks the third event of the season for the ASCS Midwest Region
after kicking off the year with a double versus the ASCS Northern Plains
Region at Nebraska Raceway Park's I-80 Speedway on April 14-15 when
Missouri's Brian Brown and South Dakota's Chuck Swenson split victory
honors.
Brown has collected one of his seven career ASCS Midwest Region feature wins
at Junction Motor Speedway, with other series winners in McCool Junction
including Jake Peters and Jason Danley.
Swenson holds the series early lead, with other Nebraska racers among the
top ten including Don Droud, Jr., Rick Ideus, Mike Boston, Jack Dover and
Mike Chadd.
After capturing the series title in 2006, Lincoln's Toby Chapman hopes to
rebound from a rough opening weekend that finds him 17th in current points.
Friday's action at Junction Motor Speedway gets under way at 7:00 p.m.
The semi-banked, 3/8-mile Junction Motor Speedway dirt oval is located in
McCool Junction, NE, off I-80 Exit 353, then 5.6 miles south on US 81, then

The ASCS Midwest Region 2007 slate consists of eleven events at seven

least 30 different states and Canada.

live dirt track race from Echo Valley Speedway in West Union, IA on May 26
and then from Dubuque on May, 28. PolyDome, of Litchfield, MN, the premier

Short Track World and a major supporter of dirt track racing.
For the first time, viewers can watch dirt track racing live either on their

NCRA Late Models Expected to Open without Boen

PARK CITY, Kan. (May 20, 2007) - NCRA officials do not expect two-time
defending series champion Kelly Boen to race Memorial Day weekend. That's
when the O'Reilly NCRA Late Model Series, presented by ICM/Ethanol, kicks
off its 2007 season with a Nebraska twin bill.
Boen flipped his racecar April 28 at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan.,
and fractured a vertebra. The original diagnosis could have kept the
Henderson, Colo., driver out of action for up to five months.
A visit with a specialist in Denver left open the possibility of returning
sooner. At this point Boen won't know anything more until his May 23 medical
exam and X-rays.
Regardless of Boen's status, the NCRA late model season opens May 25 at
Mid-Nebraska Speedway in Doniphan, Neb., before heading east May 27 to I-80
Speedway at Nebraska Raceway Park in Greenwood, Neb.
These two shows attracted a huge number of quality drivers last year - 52 at
Mid-Nebraska and 79 at I-80. Last year, Steve Kosiski swept the weekend en
route to four feature wins and a second-place finish in the standings.
However, the veteran from Papillion, Neb., has since retired from driving.
Both tracks expect another large car count this weekend, which makes it
difficult to predict who will win. With Boen out of commission, 2002 series
champion Kyle Berck emerges as a front-runner. Berck, of Marquette, Neb.,
plans to run for a second crown this season.
A couple of drivers from the Cornhusker State recorded top five finishes at
these shows in each of the past two years. Al Humphrey from Giltner had a
second and a third at Mid-Nebraska, while John Hampel of Union had a third
and a fourth at I-80. They are just two of many drivers who could contend
for the checker at either track.

Preble Wins Feature At I-80 Speedway, But Carl Edwards Steals The Show

(GREENWOOD NEB., 05/20/07) On a night where NASCAR Nextel Cup Star Carl
Edwards entertained the crowd at I-80 Speedway during intermission; Craig
Preble, Todd Hipnar, Jeff Joldersma, and Tom Myers all visited victory lane
as week two of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series action was concluded.
Edwards was on hand to watch his younger brother Kenny Edwards race in the
Dodge Super Late Model division, and lent his pit reporting skills at
intermission.
The 25 lap Dodge Super Late Model "A" main event saw the #22 of Craig Preble
jump to an early lead. The race would be slowed on lap 2 when Don Droud and
Vance Tonack tangled in turn three. Preble would keep the top spot for
another five laps until the second yellow of the race flew for Tonack who
made contact with the turn three wall. When the race restarted it was still
Preble, but the #6 of Al Humphrey would challenge Mike Wallace for second.
Wallace would keep Humphrey in his tire tracks, as #53 Joe Kosiski pressured
the #1H of Chad Humston for fourth. As the race was nearing the end, the
yellow would once again fly, as last weeks winner Jay Stewart slowed on the
front stretch. A green-white-checker finish was on hand. On the restart
Humphrey would try for second, but could not make the pass. Craig Preble
would go on to win the event, followed by Wallace, Humphrey, Kosiski, and
Humston.
Tony Leonardo would grab the early race lead in the 20 lap City Weekly "A"
feature. Lap five, the #T3 of Gary Leapley would become race leader, but he
would soon loose it on the following lap to Todd Hipnar. Hipnar would keep
up front for the next seven laps, but Leonardo would loose control of his
#96 and bring out the yellow with seven to go. On the restart was Hipnar
pulling away from the field followed by Ron Tilley who started 19th. Heavy
action was from 3rd on back, where after the restart Andrew Kosiski would
race from 5th to 3rd. Just as soon as Kosiski took the spot, the #55 of Mike
Merrill would make contact with Kosiski, the field would stack up, but all
drivers would keep going. As the checker flew it was Hipnar taking the win.
Tilley was second followed by Merrill, Kosiski, Dave Cook, and Ron Tex Jr.
Speedway Officials would send Merrill back four spots for over aggressive
driving, giving him a seventh place finish.
The Certified Transmission Pro Ams would see Rising Star Denny Berghahn Jr.
take the early lead. A third of the way through the 18 lap race, the #66 of
Jeff Joldersma would pressure Berghahn for the lead, but hope for the pass
would diminish after Joldersma slid high in turn three and four. After a
caution on lap eight, Joldersma would take the lead from Berghahn at the
halfway point. Denny Jr. did not give up, he would follow Joldersma until
the final lap when he made a run on the bottom. Berghahn pulled even with
#66 coming off or turn four, but it was Joldersma who went across the finish
line first by a car length. Joe Feyen finished third, Terry Cleveland
finished fourth, and Rick Negrete finished fifth.
Tom Myers took the lead on lap two and went on to win the 15 lap Hobby Stock
"A" main. Chad Bassinger would finish a close second, followed by Jesse
Sobbing, Josh True, and Jesse McNeal. Since Myers won the race, this weeks
Tom n Tiffs Family Restaurant bonus rolls over to next week, making the
winners purse over $200.
During intermission NASCAR Nextel Cup Star Carl Edwards would make his way
up to the front of the grandstand area. As the racing action came to a halt,
Carl would use his commentary skills announcing the big wheel race between
pit reporter Mark Wyman and two lucky young fans.
Saturday May 26th, opening night of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series
Saturday night program at I-80 Speedway gets under way with Crate Late
Models, Ty's Outdoor Power Equipment Pro Stocks, Midas B Mods, Stereo West
Auto Toys Hornets, Midwest Linings 305 Sprints and Novice Crates. On Sunday
the 27th, Your Local Area Dodge Dealers presents the sixth annual Alphabet
Soup Race featuring the cars and stars of the MLRA, NCRA, MARS, and CLMA.

5/19/2007 - Junction Motor Speedway Results

Junction Motor Speedway welcomed the Future Farmers of America to the track this past Saturday. The grandstands were filled with chapters from area high schools. At intermission, some of the chapter leaders spoke of the importance of agriculture in our state. Each Saturday holds its own excitement and this night was no different.
The Feature races started with the Stock Cars and a battle for Andy Wilkinson (York) & Mel Franz (Henderson) fighting for 1st & 2nd. Andy Wilkinson took the lead for 5 laps before Mel dropped to the inside to regain the lead. Then a struggle went on for 2nd with the Wilkinsons, Andy and Jason, going side-by-side before Jason took over and tried taking the lead from Mel with two laps to go. A caution was thrown to stop the race and influenced the outcome. When the green flag was thrown again, Mel lost the lead in traffic to fall back to fourth and Jason Wilkinson (Neligh) claimed the victory.
The Holiday Inn Four Cylinders were going well until the yellow flag came out and #50 Andy Sole (Nelson) rear-ended the leader Chuck Wergin (Milford). Last weeks feature winner, Jeremy Foos, was in the 6J car right behind him. Wergin had a bulls-eye on him as Foos took a turn at bumping him, which sent Foos to the rear of the field. The penalty allowed Troy Hofmann (Sutton) in the 10T and the # 2 of Lance Hiebner (Henderson) to pick up 2nd and 3rd. The race finally finished in that order after a total of four cautions were thrown.
One lap into the A-feature race of Cruisers there was already a caution. After a restart, a wheel went flying off of the 21g car of Chris and Josh Graczyk to cause another restart. Following such a painful start, 68 Stacey Orlando and Brent Hager (Henderson) held the lead until the 42b of Greg Ekeler and John Miller (Exeter) bumped them over to take the lead. But it was not over as the 69j of Vic and Josh Jacobitz (Nelson) started battling the 42b for the lead until Ekeler and Miller lost a wheel to give Vic and Josh the win.
From the fourth row of the Modifieds, Wade Cross moved up quickly to claim third. Justin Bell (Omaha) ran strong and built a lead on the pack. After a car spun out, the first caution was thrown. Justin Bell didn’t want to see that color because he held a strong lead on Wade Cross (Phillips) and now would have a hard time holding him off. After the green flag, Cross immediately took the lead from Bell in the back straight away. Bell fought for the lead but spun out with 3 laps to go to end in the back. Scott Styskal (David City) tried challenging Cross for the lead but was unable to take it. Justin Bell was able to claw his way all the way back up the pack to finish fourth.
Denton Buller (York) started off on the inside of row one of the Late Models, but he quickly gave up the spot to Don Smith Jr. (Norfolk) The front six cars made it around to the back straight away when John Bridges (Columbus) took the lead. The 5x of Mike Marushak (David City) was holding second until he slowed down and ended up going to the infield. Chad Humston (Giltner) kept working his way, from the fourth row where he started, toward the front until the caution flag waved in the wind. There were four cautions in a row with various issues taking place before the last six laps could be completed. Humston repeatedly tried to take the lead in the corners but could never close the deal. Bridges was able to hang on to win the A-feature for the second consecutive week.
The Hobby Stocks finished up the night of racing due to greeting fans under the grandstands at the beginning of the night. With three laps in, the familiar flag of the night, the yellow one, came out for a flat tire for the leader, Jared Timmermans (Grafton). Wade Wagonblast (Deshler) assumed the lead followed by Levi Gunn (Superior). Brent Kassik (Milligan) made a huge move from the back of the traffic to take fourth. Gunn started contending for 1st running side-by-side with Wagonblast. Gunn took the lead with five laps to go and held on for the win.
Junction Motor Speedway presents two nights of racing on Friday and Saturday, May 25 &26, with the POWRi Midgets coming to town. ASCS and NCRA 360 Sprint Cars will run with the POWRi Midgets on Friday evening. POWRi Midgets return Saturday night with the weekly racing series less Late Models. Eagle 5/19: Krutz, Alcorn, Keaton and Prall Win McDonald's Jr. Fan Club Night
From Eagle Raceway:
A large crowd turned out for McDonalds Junior Fan Club night at
America's Home Track, Eagle Raceway tonight. They were treated to a
great night of racing as 145 cars passed through the pit gates.
After all was said and done, there were a total of 16 heats; with 6 in
the Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds. Those were followed by 3 heats
of Valentino's IMCA Hobby Stocks and 3 heats of Stereo West Auto Tuners
IMCA Sport Compacts. Last for heats were 4 sets of Budweiser
Championship 360 Sprints.
As a tribute to the diligent efforts of Eagle's track prep crew, most of
the heats were run with times only ½ second off of the respective track
records. Despite the tacky track there was only one incident of note in
the heat races when second generation driver Ryan Kitchen rolled his
sprint in between turns three and four. Ryan suffered no ill effects and
managed to get his racer repaired in time to come out for the B Feature.
There was also one mishap in the Budweiser 360 Sprint B Feature when 2
more young drivers, following in their father's footsteps tangled on the
backstretch. Jordan Boston and Trevor Grossenbacher got together coming
out of turn 2 and Grossenbacher struck the backstretch wall and rolled
over. Again, the only damage was to the cars.
The sprint B Main was captured by the 32 of Chris Roseland, followed by
the 96KX of Adam Gullion, the 8B of Bobby Becker and Terry Holliman in
the 23.
Kyle Vanover came in first in the Valentino's IMCA Hobby Stock B
Feature, with the 20 of Chad Borgman finishing second, the S53 of Scott
Robinson third and Travis Runcie's 33 in fourth.
The first Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modified B Main event saw Josh
Carpenter's 3X come home the victor over Bob Ruisinger's 7 and the 75J
of Jesse Robinson. The second B Main ended with defending track champion
Chris Alcorn in the front, the 4JR of David Jewett Jr second and Brent
Schlake's Z34 finishing third. Bob Zoubek brought the 5S home for the
win in the third and final Modified B with the 24 of Dan Bohlmeyer
second and Ed "Doc" Raines in third in his 11AA.
Dan Rhiley won the Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sport Compact B Feature,
followed by Rich White in the 0, Jack Prall III in his 44, Jake Brinson
in the 3X and the 26 of Derrick Dreamer.
The Sport Compact A Feature saw the 4 of Jeff Creek take the early lead,
followed by the 33 of Jeremy Noonan and Joey Danley in the 14. Midway
through the race Mike Rice rolled his number 24 racer in turn 4. After
it was righted, Rice drove it back to the pits. Jeff Creek, Danley and
the 45 of Jack Prall IV traded positions back and forth as the 18 of
Maynard Kinnersly moved into 4 and the 62 of Justin Busboom took over
5th. With only 6 laps left, Jeff Creek spun. Prall IV took over the
point with Danley moving to second and Kinnersley to third.
With 3 laps left, Jeremy Noonan had his right rear tire buckle under,
causing him to flip through turns 1 and 2. From there the race went
green, white, checkered with Prall IV winning, with Busboom edging
Kinnersley for second place in a near photo finish.
The Valentino's IMCA Hobby Stock Feature event saw Dan Noonan's #12 take
the point early on, followed by the 10 of Brad Schreiner, the 3K of
Jerry Keaton and the 28B of Rick Bradley. Keaton moved into first place
with just 8 laps left, followed by Noonan, Bradley and the M70 of Rick
Munson. Keaton managed to maintain his lead as the race was shortened
due to time limitations.
"I've been racing Hobby Stocks for 4 years now, 2 in Bakersfield,
California and the last 2 years here. After all that time, I managed to
finally win my first Feature race. It's been a real struggle all 4
years, but this makes it all worth it" Keaton said. "The track was nice
and tacky tonight, just the way I like it. I started in 6th, but just
kept moving forward" he added. "I want to thank all my sponsors,
including Ron & Sons Automotive, Jack's Machine Shop in Hooper where I
work, Impressive Signs and the Sodbuster Saloon" Jerry said. Keaton also
thanked his pit crew; Lee Kracht and Carla Keaton his wife. "It's about
time I finally got a win, it's a great feeling. It's lots and lots of
work to get out here every week" he stated.
"Last of all I want to really, really thank Roger for all his help. This
is a great track, and I want to thank him for all he does for racing and
the racers" Keaton said.
The Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modified Feature began with Brian
Schmidt's 22 in front, with Jeff Spring's 1X in second, Sean Burkland's
B9 in third and the 1R of Matt Richards in fourth. By the 2nd lap,
Burkland had moved past Spring. Burkland then moved around Schmidt for
the lead with 13 laps left, followed by the #3 of Chris Alcorn. Alcorn
then passed Burkland in heavy traffic with just 6 laps left. A caution
came out, causing officials to shorten the race.
After a green/white/checkered finish, Alcorn held off Burkland with the
27 of Clint Homan ending up third followed by Schmidt in fourth.
"We started outside the 7th row after coming from the B Feature. Even
though the track was tacky and fast, I'd rather see it the way it was
last week. When you have a dry-slick track, everyone has to slow down
and think. If it's tacky, the inexperienced drivers don't take their
time, so they have no time to think" Alcorn said. This is Chris' second
year back at Eagle Raceway, after having run here a number of years in
the 1990's under both the Beecham's and Craig Cormack. Chris stated "I
hope you can interview me again this year, so I have a chance to work on
what I have to say". Chris' sponsors include Doctor John's, Heavy
Company, Spanel Engines, L & L Motorsports, The Alley Bar, ATH
Motorsports and Independent Equipment. "I want to thank my crew also.
They're Jeff, Jim, Phil, Lonnie and Sarah" he added.
Frank Galusha took the early lead of the Budweiser Championship 360
Sprint A Feature from the pole position in the 24B, with Jay Jordan's
19J and Mark Pace's 31 in close pursuit. His lead was short-lived,
however when his sprinter slowed in turns 1 and 2 of the second lap.
This moved Jordan into the lead, which he held until 4 laps down as he
spun in turns 3 and 4. That put Pace's 31 in the lead, followed by Jay
Russell in the 76, Tadd Holliman's 23R in third, Brad Krutz in the 91
fourth and defending track champion Mike Boston's 15 in fifth.
Just 3 laps later, Russell and Krutz moved up into first and second. 1
more lap saw Boston in third. The next few laps saw Boston and the #3 of
Jeff Griffis battling tooth and nail for position. With 11 laps left,
Krutz moved into second place behind Russell with Griffis in fourth
behind Boston. 2 laps later, Boston jumped the berm in turn 1, allowing
Griffis to pass him. With just 6 laps left Russell's right rear tire
began losing air, causing him to drop back. This put Krutz in first and
allowed Griffis to take over second place on the last lap. Krutz
maintained his lead to the finish with Griffis second, Russell third and
Boston coming home fourth.
Asked about his victory, Krutz said "This is actually my second A
Feature win. I had one a couple of years ago in Gary Swenson's 24B.
After that year, I sat out a season and ½ when we had our daughter. I
only ran about 6 or 7 times last year with an old car of Brent Morris'."
"The track was a little too moist for my liking tonight, and a little
rough in spots. I figured I had to just 'cowboy up' and find the line
that the car liked" he added. "I want to thank my car owner Brent Morris
for giving me this new car this year. I really don't have any sponsors,
other than Brent; but Cori Eckley helps out an awful lot," he stated. "I
really had fun tonight. Racing with Mike and Jeff definitely makes you
sit up in the seat" he said.
Don't forget to come out next week for Eagle Raceway's first "Fan
Appreciation Night", with General Admission tickets just $5. There will
also be a stunt airplane show, featuring Bobby Cox.

Kansas drivers cash in at Red Cloud

RED CLOUD, NE (May 18)—Three of the six feature winners at The Speed
Bowl in Red Cloud, NE, Friday evening, May 18, hailed from the
neighboring state and found their way to victory lane.
Troy Johnson led the opening lap of the IMCA Modified feature before the
yellow flew on lap 2 for a two-car tangle. While under caution, Johnson
pulled into the pits and did not return. Jordan Grabouski inherited the
lead on the restart, but the jinx on the leader continued as Grabouski
lost power on lap 6 and had to pit. That gave the lead to Jason
Schoenberger of Gorham, KS. Schoenberger was chased by Tim Watts, Lonnie
Schriner and Johnny Saathoff but no one could catch him. Watts finished
second in the 20-lap race, followed by Schriner, Dusty Blake, and
Saathoff. Johnson, Grabouski, and Schoenberger won the three heat races.
Jason McCartney of Smith Center, KS, led all 20 laps of the IMCA Stock
Car feature but really had to earn it. Five cars chased McCartney the
last half of the race, including heat one winner Matt Streit, Brett
Behrends, Wayne Walker, Jason Smidt and Josh Hudson. The top six stayed
nose-to-tail but McCartney held on to the checkers. Walker finished a
close second, followed by Streit, Behrends, and Smidt. Martin Newlin won
the other heat race.
Mike Shriver of Hastings led all 12 laps of the IMCA Hobby Stock feature
to pick up his first win of the season at the 3/8-mile oval. Rocky
Zimmerman kept Shriver in sight but could not make a pass and had to
settle for the runner-up spot. Heat two winner Jim Buss placed third,
followed by Wade Wagenblast and Joe McDole. Shriver was victorious in
the other heat race.
Adam Sidlo & E.J. Kothe of Hastings won their third Cruiser feature at
The Speed Bowl this season, leading from green to checkered. Heat race
winners Josh & Chris Graczyk were second, followed by Drew Barry & Ethan
Vogler.
After finishing second to Andy Sole in the heat race, Matthew Ford of
Juniata came back to win the 4-cylinder Young Gun feature.
The Mod Lites made a special appearance, and the veteran Bud Lee of
Salina, KS, put a thumping on the field. After easily winning the heat
race, Lee led all 10 laps of the feature. Brandon Gray finished second
and Travis Smith third.
The regular five divisions return this Friday night, May 25. Racing
begins at 8:00 p.m.
