(Greenwood, Ne., 08/02/2009) Sunday night at I-80 Speedway was a time to
honor the memory of 2 past track officials, Larry Protasky and Don Murcek.
And on this memorable night Les Siebert got his first career NASCAR Late
Model feature at I-80 in the 2nd of 2 feature events.
Siebert took the early lead after an opening lap yellow flag and never
looked back while holding off the challenges of Mike Wallace. Siebert, who
has been racing for roughly 25 years, had never won at I-80 before and was
glad to finally get that first one. Todd Hipnar came home 3rd ahead of point
leader Billy Leighton Jr and veteran driver Tom Svoboda. Clint Benson and
Rick Vanderheiden won the B-Feature events.
In the first Late Model feature Dave Cook grabbed the lead at the drop of
the green flag only to lose it on lap 13 to Clint Benson. A yellow on lap 17
saw Benson head to the pits with a flat tire giving the lead back to Cook.
Cook stayed on point until lap 22 when Leighton passed him and went on to
take the checkered flag 1st ahead of Andrew Kosiski. But at the post race
tech Leighton and 6th place finisher Matt Buller were disqualified for
illegal fuel. This gave Kosiski the win followed by Hipnar, Cook and Kenny
Edwards.
The NASCAR Pro-am feature saw Casey Cleveland take the early lead only to
give it up on lap 2 to Marty Steinbech. Despite several yellow flags
Steinbech was able to take the win over a fast closing Scotty Hartman. One
of the race stoppages came on lap 7 when Chad Sanders got upside down in the
4th turn. Sanders was ok but his car was not. Cory Dumpert finished 3rd
ahead of Matt Boucher and Greg Cooper.
The IMCA Sports Mod feature saw Bret Daringer take the early lead with Hank
Dewild following in 2nd. These 2 waged a spirited battle in the early going.
Dewild took the lead on lap 7, but Jesse Sobbing was in hot pursuit. Sobbing
took the lead on lap 12. But several cautions during the final 3 laps worked
to Chad Dills advantage and he grabbed the lead with one lap left and went
on to his 3rd win of the season. Sobbing, the Regional Point leader,
finished 2nd ahead of Dewild, Jim Hendricks Jr., and Dennis Cook. Dewild had
his motor claimed and sold it. Dewild, Sobbing and Mike Brown won heat
races.
In the first Sports Compact feature Brandon Hammons took the early lead and
held it until lap 3 when Dave Christensen passed him. Christensen then held
off Alex Fink for the win. Joe Baker, Pete Fink Jr. and Brett Smith rounded
out the top 5.
In the 2nd feature Tammy Clark took the early lead and held it til lap 2
when Kennin Colestock passed her. Colestock stayed out front until lap 7
when Justin Soule passed him. Soule then held off John Sedlachek for the
win. Ole Olson, Jamie Spanel and Andrew Cuva rounded out the top 5.
Steven Saunders won the IMCA Crate Late Model feature over Tyler Zander and
Michael Powell.
Next Sunday will be fan appreciation night at I-80 with every grandstand
admission only 5 dollars. Gates open at 4 with hot laps at 5:30 and the
first heat hits the track at 5:55.
