Jim Brennan
(Greenwood, Ne., 08/04/09) It was the first ever 2 Buck Tuesday at I-80
Speedway and IMCA Modified National Point Leader Dylan Smith picked up
another feature win.
Stacey Wilhelm got a great jump to the early lead of the 18 lap feature
event with Johnny "The Jet" Saathoff and Ricky "The Racer" Stephan in 2nd
and 3rd. Smith, who started 7th, was up to 2nd on lap 6 and took the lead on
lap 7. But Jeff Jones was the driver who stepped up to the plate to
challenge for the lead after taking 2nd on lap 10. A yellow flag with 3 laps
left tightened things up. On the restart Smith went to the bottom of the
track, where Jones was gaining on him and managed to hold him off for the
win. Wilhelm, Saathoff and Randy Foote rounded out the top 5. Wilhelm and
Smith won the heat races.
The SportMods saw a massive pileup coming to the flagstand on the opening
lap. This sent Jim Hendricks, Jason Fusselman and Bret Sheppard to the pits.
But Jesse Sobbing changed a tire and restarted at the tail end. Buddy Ray
Jones took the early lead. But on lap 2 he spun out in turn 4 giving the
lead to Laini Schwartz. Hank Dewild took the lead on lap 3 and held it until
lap 8 when he himself spun out in turn 2. This gave the lead to Joe Feyen.
But Sobbing was a man on a mission moving into 3rd on lap 8, second on lap 9
and taking the lead on lap 10. Sobbing went on to record his 6th win in his
rookie year in the class. Dennis Cook came on to finish 2nd ahead of Feyen.
Robert Tippery and Brian Kosiski rounded out the top 5. Sobbing is currently
2nd in Northern Region points.
The Crate Late Model feature saw Mike Morton Jr. lead from start to finish.
But Lindsey Yost made it interesting on the last lap as she tried to make
the pass for the win. But Morton held his ground and picked up his 3rd win
of the year. Yost won the heat race.
The Sports Compact feature was a family feud between the Fink Brothers, Alex
and Pete, Jr. Pete took the lead early from Kevin Zeitner and looked like
he would get the win. But Alex had other ideas and passed his brother with 2
laps left and went on to record the win. Ole Olson, Jake McCloud and Joe
Baker rounded out the top 5.
The Hobby Stocks made their first appearance of the year at I-80 and 19
signed in to do battle. Walnut, Iowa's Kurt Hansen took the early lead but
was immediately challenged by Adam Armstrong. Hansen and Armstrong battled
side by side until lap 5 when Armstrong took the lead. Tom Myers came on to
challenge for the lead in the closing laps but could not get the job done.
Hansen finished 3rd ahead of Blain Petersen.
