NASCAR's Schrader at JMS Spring Thaw
Optimism pt. I
While some people complained about the absence of ASCS Midwest events at Nebraska's
only weekly 360 Sprint track, it was shown last year that racer participation
was spotty. The ASCS sanctioned Nebraska Cup in September saw
a good car count, but so did the non-sanctioned Icebreaker. One could argue
that the races outside the core of the season and the higher payout were
bigger factors. It did give the previous Eagle management's reasoning, "I
have an ASCS show each week" some credence.
I'm not knocking ASCS here, I'm crediting the strength of Eagle's weekly
sprint show. Indeed, I think that the full potential of an ASCS regional show is
best realized at tracks that don't have a strong sprint program.
The 2009 schedule with Eagle being "ASCS-less" yet with four shows up the road
at I-80 and two an hour from Lincoln at JMS needs to be looked at with a different
attitude that somehow they're picking up where Eagle is missing out. I disagree with
that. In fact, I think it's the best of both worlds and seems to be the
best formula for the tracks, ASCS, racers and fans.
Think about it as a sprint fan. Instead of taking away weekly Saturday shows
at Eagle to run under the ASCS banner, there's even more shows to attend, at
roughly the same distance. I-80 & JMS host sprint shows without having to
run the weekly commitment, while Eagle doesn't have to add sanction fees, and
purse for what it already has.
What about two-day shows at one track? Having worked in the front office at
a racetrack, I can tell you that two day shows are rarely two, FULL, shows.
Usually the first day suffers.
While on paper, they seem to be the same I think being in the entertainment
business lets one see the intangible effect that doesn't show up on
spreadsheets. The effect of variety is hard to quantify but it's evident.
From experience in the office and experience traveling to many shows on a
race team and as a fan, it's been my observation that two similar shows at
two tracks tend to draw better overall than two identical shows at the same
track. Let's be honest, sprint shows at long tracks are different than shows
at small tracks. Not better or worse, just different.
But that can be a good thing.
Going to one place for two days and seeing the same people in the same
events is like ordering the same food two nights in a row, though some find
two nights of steak good, instead you have lobster one and steak the other,
both good but both different. It may be fine food, and it may be pricey, but
it's DIFFERENT food. So if one track can fulfill a demand, while the
'feeder' track doesn't need to incur more expense, it's a good thing.
To continue with the variety theme, it's also a good chance for people who
don't attend Eagle weekly to see something different too.
Any sprint car fan should be elated to have that kind of choice in this
economic climate.

Karl Chevrolet returns as title sponsor of IMCA's Northern SportMod division
of IMCA's fastest growing division.
The Ankeny, Iowa, auto dealership will provide a portion of the point fund
to be paid to top 10 drivers in final national standings for the Northern
SportMod class.
"Karl Chevrolet remains one of the premier Chevy dealers in America and your
best choice for new and used cars and trucks," noted IMCA Marketing Director
Kevin Yoder. "However, their service department combined with their GM
Performance Parts line and the crate engine program make them a big reason
why so many IMCA racers are choosing to do business with Karl, both on and
off the track."
The number of licensed drivers in the Northern SportMods surpassed the 250
mark in just the division's fourth season. Twenty-one tracks in six states -
Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin - have returned
contracts thus far to sanction the class in 2009.
Karl Chevrolet will also give a crate motor to a Northern SportMod driver
competing at the 2009 IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals.
Drivers are required to display two Karl Chevrolet decals on their race cars
during the regular point season and at Su per Nationals; they must compete
in at least half the weekly races at an IMCA sanctioned track to be eligible
for the crate motor drawing at Boone.

Which comes first?
On behalf of my real job (seriously), I was reading through marketing guru and author Seth Godin's blog today. I hadn't been there in a while, and I came across a post that piqued my interest.
In his post "Which comes first, the product or the marketing" Seth states the following:
"In fact, just about every successful product or service is the result of smart marketing thinking first, followed by a great product that makes the marketing story come true."
As much as it is a light hearted self-pat on the back, my point is that getting the word out, hyping up the event and delivering are all important and fundamental - and in THAT order...

Wallace To Take On USMTS National Tour Thirteen Times In 2009
but the 45-year-old driver, racetrack owner and television personality is
still looking for his first win with the USMTS National Tour after 15 starts
the previous two seasons.
Modified fans will have an ample number of opportunities to catch "The
Hermanator" in action in 2009 as he has penciled-in thirteen dates with the
USMTS National Tour.
Wallace's first stop will be in one month as the USMTS National Tour makes
it's inaugural visit to the Caney Valley Speedway in Caney, Kan., on Friday,
March 13. Wallace will also join the field the following night at the
Humboldt (Kan.) Speedway.
Wallace won the first race he ever entered in 1982, and the youngest member
of the racing Wallace family, a longtime mechanic and crew member for his
brothers Rusty and Mike, had a shot at driving a racecar of his own in the
Illinois Street Stock State Championship. Kenny's win in that race would be
the first of many in his racing career.
In September of 1988, Dale Earnhardt gave Wallace the seat for his
first-ever NASCAR start. He finished seventh in his first Nationwide Series
(formerly Busch Series) start at Martinsville, Va. The following year,
Wallace raced the full Nationwide Series schedule in a car owned by brother
Rusty, earning the 1989 Rookie of the Year award and finishing sixth in
driver point standings.
Wallace's Busch Series accomplishments include nine wins, 10 poles, and
eight seasons in the top-10 in driver points. In fact, Wallace has finished
in the top-10 in every full Busch Series season he has ever run, including a
second-place run in 1991 that ended just 74 points shy of the championship
in what is still one of the closest points battles in series history.
Wallace drove the #78 Furniture Row Racing Chevrolet in the NASCAR Nextel
Cup Series in 2007, and was voted by fans to compete in the NASCAR Nextel
All-Star Challenge at Lowe's Motor Speedway in May.
In addition to his driving duties, Wallace also works as an on-air
personality for SPEED Channel on shows such as NASCAR RaceDay and NASCAR
Victory Lane. He was also featured on the show NASCAR Drivers: 360 on FX and
is part owner of the Macon (Ill.) Speedway.
The following thirteen USMTS National Tour dates are part of Wallace's 2009
schedule:
Fri Mar 13 . Caney Valley Speedway, Caney, KS
Sat Mar 14 . Humboldt Speedway, Humboldt, KS
Fri May 15 . Midway Speedway, Lebanon, MO
Sun May 17 . Monett Speedway, Monett, MO

Shelby County Gearing up for '09
your place to be on Saturday Nights! We appreciate all of our racers, crews,
sponsors and fans. We look forward to the best season yet in 2009.
Number Registration and Reserved Parking
We are gearing up for our third season and would ask you to consider getting
your registrations and parking reservations in early. Those who had reserved
parking last year will have first shot at keeping their spot for the 2009
season. This is not automatic; however, we need to hear from you. These
spots will be held until March 31st and if we have not heard from you --
they will be available to others to reserve. Number Registration will remain
at $35 for all cars with the exception of the Sport Compacts whose number
registration is waived. Reserved parking is $75 for front row with access to
electricity and all others $50.
NOTE Change for 2009: Only open trailers will be allowed to park in the
corners. Signs will be posted and this will be enforced. This is being
implemented to facilitate better corner visibility for both track officials
and the fans in the stands. Enclosed trailers will be asked to park either
in the front row, center row or the backstretch straightaway. Big haulers
will be pitted in the back pit area outside of the racetrack.

USMTS Implements Stimulus Package
1933, Franklin Roosevelt told a nation in the depths of the depression that
"the only thing we have to fear is fear itself."
For racecar drivers, the list may be a bit longer. Volatile fuel prices and
the escalating costs associated with parts and repairs are just the tip of
the iceberg when it comes to the material needs of today's competitors. From
the most well-funded teams in NASCAR to the pure stock driver from Anytown,
USA, the rising cost of racing is enough to strike fear in anybody's
checkbook.
"Obviously there's an uneasiness about the economy right now," said USMTS
president Todd Staley. "Everybody from sponsors and team owners to track
operators and race fans are tightening their belts and watching their
balance sheets closer than ever. We've been extremely blessed with enormous
support from sponsors, drivers and fans during these past ten years, so we
wanted to add some stimulus of our own to the extended USMTS family.
"The USMTS offers one of the best values in all of motorsports. For that
reason, we feel that the fans will continue to include USMTS events as part
of their entertainment budget so long as the product on the racetrack
continues to be the best of the best."
More than 800 different drivers from 23 different States took part in USMTS
events in 2008 as the rugged road warriors staged nearly 80 events at 45
unique venues in 14 different States throughout America's heartland.
Therefore, by unanimous bipartisan consent of the congress of the United
States Modified Touring Series, the following stimulus package shall be
immediately implemented for the 2009 racing season:
ARTICLE I: For the third straight year, the USMTS is holding the line on
ticket prices for fans attending USMTS National Tour and USMTS Southern
Series events. For most shows, the recommended adult ticket price will
remain $15, with discounts for kids and free admission for young children.
Furthermore, the USMTS will be offering new ways for fans to get discounts
on tickets, contests to earn season passes and more.
ARTICLE II: Drivers will see no increase in 2009 for the cost of entry fees
or a USMTS license. There is no requirement to purchase a USMTS license to
compete in any USMTS event. Benefits enjoyed by licensed drivers includes
higher event purses and bonus payouts, increased tow money, discounted entry
fees, contingency awards, points funds, provisional starting spots,
increased media recognition, a personalized driver profile page at
www.usmts.com and more.
ARTICLE III: However, drivers will see an increase when they visit the pay
window after each event. For instance, fourth place was $800 and will now be
$900 for licensed drivers, while seventh through tenth in each USMTS
National Tour main event will also see an increase in prize money. All
licensed drivers that qualify for the Holley "A" Main will be guaranteed at
least $300, up from $250 last season.
ARTICLE IV: The 2009 race season will see two track provisionals at all
USMTS races during the 2009 season. On nights when there are 40 or fewer
cars entered, 20 will qualify through the heat races and Real Racing Wheels
"B" Mains. Two USMTS provisionals will be awarded, along with two track
provisionals to create a 24-car Holley "A" Main starting field. On nights
when 41 or more cars check in, 22 qualifiers will be joined by two USMTS
provisionals and two track provisionals to make up a 26-car starting field.
Track provisionals will generally be awarded based on track points, but
drawings or other means may be used at the discretion of the promoter.
ARTICLE V: The Top Dog bonus will remain in effect for both the USMTS
National Tour and USMTS Southern Series in 2009. Beginning with the third
event in each region of the USMTS National Tour, drivers will be guaranteed
a minimum of $400 at each event where that driver is among the top-10 in
points for that region. USMTS Southern Series drivers will be guaranteed a
minimum of $300 at each event where that driver is among the top-10 in
points, while drivers ranked 11th through 15th will earn a minimum of $200.
ARTICLE VI: Finally, for the fourth straight season, the Casey's General
Stores Hunt for the USMTS National Championship will crown the USMTS
National Champion. Eighteen events make up The Hunt for 2009, with all
single-day events paying $3,000 to win. The Sept. 18-19 doubleheader at the
North Central Speedway in Brainerd, Minn., will pay $2,000 to win on Friday
and $3,000 to win on Saturday. The 11th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree is
set for Sept. 24-26, with $2,000 going to the winner on Thursday, $4,000 on
Friday and $6,000 on Saturday.
God bless America.
Beginning its 11th season in 2009, the USMTS is the ultimate playground for
America's hottest Modified drivers. To learn more about the United States
Modified Touring Series, call the headquarters at (515) 832-7944 or visit

Three IMCA divisions run at South Dakota's Raceway Park
at a different South Dakota venue this season.
Raceway Park at Jefferson opens on April 19, with Sunday programs featuring
the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods, IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars and IMCA
Sunoco Hobby Stocks continuing through Sept. 6.
New owner Tom Reed and promoter Ron Jensen are also looking at a handful of
Friday night events, contingent on schedules at other area tracks.
"There are a lot of SportMod and Stock Car drivers in the area who will be
able to race here for points," Jensen said. "We had very good car counts of
14-16 Hobby Stocks last year and we hope to see even better numbers because
of drivers chasing points."
Stock Cars and Hobby Stock points earned at Raceway Park will apply in the
Jet Racing Northern Region for the respective divisions.
Idle for all of 2007, the former Interstate Speedway hosted a full schedule
of non-sanctioned races last year.
Bleachers were rebuilt before the first green flag of 2008. Plans for the
upcoming season include completion of permanent restroom facilities,
construction of an infield concession stand and installing new scales in the
infield.
Jensen, a two-time Hobby Stock track championship at Jefferson during his
own racing career, also said purses would be maintained from 2008, and that
drivers would be paid after each 2009 race program is completed.

Russell to Take on Knoxville
Jay Russell Enters 360 Mix in 2009!
1/30/2009 - (Bill W) "Jaybird" Jay Russell will put his hat in the ring for
360 Rookie of the Year honors in 2009. The native of Elwood, Kansas has been
involved in racing his entire life. Jay competed in the go-kart starting at
the age of 12. He moved on to mini-sprints and then the full-size sprint
cars at the age of 17 in 2000.
His sprint career has included top ten point runs at the Savannah Speedway
and the US36 Speedway near Cameron in Missouri. In 2006, he towed to Eagle
Raceway on Saturdays, earning "Most Improved Driver" honors there, and
grabbing his first sprint feature win. In 2007, he was 10th in points at
Eagle, and in 2008, finished third in the points there. He also competed in
several ASCS-Midwest shows, finishing seventh in points with that series. He
has three career wins, all of them at Eagle Raceway. Jay was running third
in a May 2008 feature at Knoxville when his motor expired.
Regional Alignments Revealed For USMTS National Tour
WEBSTER CITY, Iowa (Jan. 31) – Regional alignments have been announced for
the USMTS National Tour, officials announced today.
For the 11th straight season, the rugged road warriors of the USMTS National
Tour will thrill race fans in America's heartland with an aggressive 2009
campaign which features 61 events at 39 different venues in 10 different
States.
The schedule is highlighted with return engagements to 31 facilities that
hosted an USMTS National Event last season, one facility returning to the
line-up after a two-year hiatus and seven new venues encompassing some of
the most exciting dirt ovals in America.
For the sixth straight year, the USMTS National Tour campaign looks to kick
off with a doubleheader at the Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction,
Neb. The 6th Annual Nebraska Spring Thaw is slated for Friday and Saturday,
March 6-7. Friday's event will pay $2,000 to win while the victor in
Saturday's main event will pocket $3,000. More than 70 entries are once
again expected for the annual lidlifter at the 3/8-mile high-banked clay
oval for the first race in the Great Plains Region.
The following weekend will find the USMTS touring titans at the Caney Valley
Speedway in Caney, Kan., for the first time ever on Friday, March 13,
followed by a Saturday date at the Humboldt Speedway in Humboldt, Kan., on
Saturday, March 14. Both shows will be the first points races in the
always-tough Mo-Kan Region.
The Central States Region will begin on Tuesday, May 19, at the Southern
Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
Two days later on Thursday, May 21, the first event in the Yeager Machine
Upper Midwest Region takes place at the Cresco Speedway in Cresco, Iowa.
Tim Donlinger is the defending titlist in the Yeager Machine Upper Midwest
Region, while eight-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock captured the
other three regional crowns in 2008. Donlinger went on to upset Shryock in
the Casey's General Stores Hunt for the USMTS National Championship, sealing
the deal with a thrilling victory on the final night of the Featherlite Fall
Jamboree at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn.
This year, The Hunt will start on Tuesday, Aug. 11, at the LA Raceway in La
Monte, Mo., and wrap up back at Deer Creek with the 11th Annual Featherlite
Fall Jamboree on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24-26, where the 2009
USMTS National Champion will be crowned.
Past USMTS National Champions include Shryock (1999-2006), Jason Krohn
(2007) and Donlinger (2008).

The Casey's General Stores Hunt for the USMTS National Championship will be
comprised of the final 16-18 races of the season. The USMTS points system
will be used at all regional events, with the top-10 in the final standings
for each of the four regions earning a spot in The Hunt. In addition, any
driver who has perfect attendance in a region will also be qualified. After
the completion of the regional schedule and base points have been
established, the USMTS points system will be used at the remaining events
for the drivers in The Hunt to determine the 2009 USMTS National Champion.
For the fans, the The Hunt serves as a "playoff" for the ultimate prize in
Modified racing. While handicapping gives a slight advantage to the drivers
that compete on the entire USMTS National Tour circuit, any of the qualified
drivers have a legitimate shot at capturing the crown.
To learn more about the United States Modified Touring Series, call the
headquarters at (515) 832-7944 or visit www.usmts.com online for the latest
news and information from the USMTS.
