Kosiski And Foote Win On Last Lap At I-80 Speedway

(GREENWOOD NEB., 07/15/07) As the sun went down, the action heated at I-80 Speedway as two of the four "A" features were settled coming off of turn four on the final lap. Joe Kosiski, Randy Foote, Todd Hipnar, and Marty Steinbech all would pick up main event victories as Cookies BBQ presented the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series.

The 25 lap Dodge Super Late Model "A" feature event seen "The Mad Dog" Scott Koskovich take the early lead on lap one. Koskovich would loose the top spot to the #28 of Bill Leighton Jr as the first yellow of the race flew on lap 9 for a spinning Ed Kosiski. As the race resumed, Leighton would give up the lead to Al Humphrey who made a power move coming off turn four, meanwhile Joe Kosiski used the bottom side of the speedway to move through the field from his sixth row starting position. Lap by lap Kosiski would gain ground on Humphrey's #6, and as the white flag came out the race was shaping out to be another photo finish. When Humphrey entered turn one, the lap machine of Dave Hanke would hold him up for the slightest moment, giving Kosiski the opportunity he needed. Kosiski would hold a slight advantage going down the back straightaway and entering turn three. Kosiski would then drive off the bottom of the speedway and beat Humphrey to the line for his second feature win of the season. Leighton finished third, Mike Wallace came home fourth, and Leon Zeitner was fifth.

Randy Foote would take the point from the pole starting position in the 18 lap Modified feature. As the leaders entered turn four, second place runner Robert Brinkman would loose the handle on his #1m machine causing a six car pile up involving Dave Newton, Mike Goldfuss, Bill Bader Jr., Scott Carlson, and Bob Zoubek. As the race was restarted, Foote would once again take control of the lead, but the car on the move was the #96j of Johnny "The Jet" Saathoff. Saathoff would rim ride against the wall all the way to the runner up position. Lap 11 would see trouble for top 10 runner Matt Richards as he came to a stop on the track. When the green waved again, it was Foote running the bottom with Saathoff right in his tire tracks. This would prove trouble for the #96j. As soon as Saathoff went low, the #16 of Reese Coffee went high passing Saathoff for second. Coffee would then find himself getting passed by the #92 of Jeff Stephens. Stephens would pull along side of Foote for the lead, and the two would trade the top spot back and forth. As the white flag fell it was a coin toss to see who would win. Stephens kept it glued to the high side, Foote would be down low. Coming off of turn four it was a drag race between the two, and it was Foote winning by inches. Stephens, J.C. Wyman, Coffee, and Saathoff rounded out the top five.

The 20 lap City Weekly Grand National feature event would see a lap one accident involving Steve Farnsworth, Tony Leonardo, and Gary Leapley. Leapley would be able to continue, but his night would turn upside down later on. When the race got back under way, it was Rookie Matt Buller taking the early lead. Buller would lead the first couple of laps, but the car on the move was 15th place starter Todd Hipnar. Hipnar's #12 would be on a rail around the bottom of the speedway and he would work his way to top spot before the half way point. Lap 11 would see disaster for Leapley's #T3. Leapley would try to clear the #12m of Matt Mcatee when contact was made sending Leapley car rolling down the back straightaway. The #T3 machine would end up on its roof, but Leapley was able to walk away uninjured. As the racing action got back underway, it was all Hipnar who took his third feature win on the season. Dave Livingston finished second, Dave Doll was third, Ron Tex came from 19th to finish fourth, and point leader Dave Cook was fifth.

Marty Steinbech would come from the 12th starting position to win the 18 lap Certified Transmission Pro Am "A" feature. Denny Berghahn Jr would finish second with Shawn Bulin coming home third. Terry Cleveland and Rick Negrete rounded out the top five.

JMS Cornhusker Challenge Live Updates and Internet Coverage

Live updates of the 3rd Annual Cornhusker Midget Challenge at Junction Motor Speedway are being made available by www.MidwestDirt.com. The POWRi/USAC/SMRS co-sanctioned double-header is set for Tuesday-July 24th and Wednesday-July 25th. O'Reilly Auto Parts USMTS at Eagle July 17

The O'Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series roars back
into action on Tuesday, July 17, at the Eagle Raceway in Eagle, Neb., for a
$2,000-to-win Western Region showdown. Despite thermostats peaking at a
near-record 108 degrees for this event last year, more than 1,500 race fans
were on hand to witness a full field of cars and sizzling on-track action at
the historic 1/3-mile high-banked oval. With one of the largest weekly
Modified car counts in the nation, this year's Modified Madness presented by
94.1 FM is sure to be another classic.

Tuesday's clash at Eagle will be the first of 28 National Events in 52 days
that will wrap up the most exciting O'Reilly USMTS season ever and crown the
ninth O'Reilly USMTS national champion. Last year's winner, Kelly Shryock,
will look to add a second Eagle trophy to his collection as he seeks his
unprecedented ninth O'Reilly USMTS title.

More than 40 drivers from 10 States are expected, including last year's
runner-up, Zack VanderBeek, Jason Hughes, Al Hejna, Tommy Weder Jr., Jay
Poidinger, Steve Holzkamper, Corey Dripps, Scott Green, Jon Tesch, Jason
Krohn, Greg Skaggs, Mike Spaulding, Brent Bohmont, Mike Hejna, Tommy Myer,
Dean Mahlstedt, Mark Noble, Jake Neal, Jeremy Rasmussen, Jason Friesen and
many more.

Current Eagle Raceway points leader Chris Alcorn of Lincoln finished seventh
last year after qualifying for the main event through a Real Racing Wheels
"B" Main. Alcorn has been dominant this season and will likely challenge the
rugged O'Reilly USMTS road warriors for the $2,000 top prize.

Pit gates open at 4:30 p.m., while the grandstands will open at 5:30. Hot
laps begin at 6:45 with racing to follow.

The 2nd Annual Modified Madness presented by 94.1FM at Eagle Raceway in
Eagle, Neb., will be the 30th of 56 races on the 2007 NAtional Events
schedule for the O'Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring
Series -- the ninth of 10 scheduled events comprising the O'Reilly USMTS
Western Region slate. Hobby Stocks will also be on the card and racing for
$400 to win.

Top Midget Drivers Head For “Cornhusker Midget Challenge” July 24-25 at Junction Motor Speedway

Drivers will shoot for $5,000-to-win prize in second night of competition

MILLSTADT, Ill. ( July 8, 2007 ) – Brady Bacon (Tulsa, Okla.) flashed his teenage smile in victory lane during last year’s “Cornhusker Midget Challenge” at Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Neb. But that was last season. Bacon hopes to duplicate his efforts and win outright in this year’s two-race swing, which is scheduled for July 24-25. It will mark the third annual event for the O’Reilly POWRi National Midget Series, which is welcoming USAC as a co-sanctioning body for the first time. Both races will be 30-lappers.

Many of USAC’s top teams will join with POWRi’s top drivers in the two-race clash. That list includes Bacon, who will look for his second straight win, this time with Kasey Kahne Racing. His teammate is Kevin Swindell ( Memphis , Tenn. ), son of former World of Outlaws champion Sammy Swindell.

And Kahne isn’t the only NASCAR Nextel Cup Series star fielding a team for the “Cornhusker Midget Challenge.” Two-time series champion Tony Stewart and his Tony Stewart Racing Enterprises two-car team will bring Levi Jones (Olney, Ill.) and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (Olive Branch, Miss.), the only driver this season to win in all three of USAC’s National divisions. Stenhouse won the POWRi-USAC co-sanctioned race May 12 at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt , Ind.

In addition, current series points leader Darren Hagen (Riverside, Calif.), defending USAC National Midget Car Series champion Jerry Coons Jr., Nine Racing teammates Dave Darland (Lincoln, Ind.) and Davey Ray (Davenport, Iowa) and 2005 USAC National Midget Car Series titlist Josh Wise (Riverside, Calif.) will look to top Bacon’s performance and earn the $5,000-to-win prize for Wednesday’s night triumph. Tuesday will offer $3,000 to the winner. Ray is a former race winner.

But USAC isn’t the only sanctioning body bring the names to McCool. O’Reilly POWRi Midget points leader Mike Hess ( Petersburg , Ill. ) will be back in his own car after securing an engine to run the rest of the season. Hess, who has three victories, has frequently competed in other cars but is expected to be back in his No. 51 Hess Motorsports machine.

Brad Loyet (Sunset Hills, Mo.), who has run among the top five in POWRi all season, has mended following a frightening accident at Knoxville (Iowa) Raceway and will continue his pursuit for the POWRi championship at McCool, as will Kuhn, currently second in the POWRi standings. Several top Southern Midget Racing Series (SMRS) drivers, including points co-leaders Gary Taylor and Matt Sherrell, both of Oklahoma , are expected to compete in the race as well.

The races mark the second and third co-sanctioned races between POWRi and USAC. POWRi also competed at McCool early this season, with Keith Rauch scoring his first career series win.

Trauernicht, Grabouski, Watts, Vanover and Dobrovolny/Becker take home wins at Beatrice Speedway

Dave Trauernicht of Beatrice took advantage of his front row starting
spot to dominate the IMCA Modified A Feature. He took the lead early and
ran away from the competition in his Belleville Motorsports, Reedy
Machine and Fab, Holtmeier Farms and Seneca Sanitation sponsored BMS
Modiifed. He was followed across the line by Bob Zoubek, Josh Carpenter,
Lance Borgman and Johnny Saathoff.

Jordan Grabouski of Beatrice filling in for Tyler Snyder in the 20
Limited Modified took advantage of a slip by race leader Craig Evers on
the last lap to take the win. He took the Blue Valley Door Co., Eyecare
Specialties, Extreme Motorsports, Halsey Auto Sales, Jordening Lawn
Service, Larry's Tire and Service, Lillian Fritch Insurance, Nebraska
Crop Insurance, RMF, Runza, Sam Minge, Side Trek Bar and Grill, and

Soll And Tex's Photo Finish Ends Exciting Night At I-80 Speedway

(GREENWOOD NEB., 07/14/07) With over 100 cars entered in the pit area,
the racing was as hot on the track as it was off. With the Great Clips
Crate Late Model feature coming down to a photo finish; Nick Deal, Scott
Carlson, Justin Soule, Steve Saunders, and Alex Fink all visited victory
lane as Ty's Outdoor Power Equipment presented the NASCAR Whelen
All-American Series.

The 25 lap Great Clips Crate Late Model "A" feature event seen the #50
of Brad Soll jump out to an early lead from his inside row one starting
position. With Soll out front by a large margin, the fourth place
starter Mike Svagera pulled into second. Svagera would chase down Soll
and challenge him for the lead when the yellow would fly for the first
time on lap 8 for points leader Jason Hobscheidt. With Hobscheidt in
the pit area with rear suspension failure, it was Soll taking the green
flag to restart the race. As the leader hit the back chute, trouble
struck for the #40 of Shawn Harker. Harker's car would climb the wall
and do a flip in the air. Luckily the car would land on all four wheels
and Harker was able to climb out uninjured. After the race got
restarted, the race would be halted another three times before the final
yellow on lap 15. Then it was on! By this point in the race the #8x of
Ron Tex Jr. had worked his way into the top five from his 15th place
starting position. With a half dozen laps remaining, Tex drove into
second and challenged Soll for the lead. Tex would have the advantage
through turns one and two, but Soll would make up the ground in turns
three and four. The two would cross the finish line side by side with
Soll holding the advantage by feet every lap. As the white flag was
displayed, Tex would lead his first lap of the race. The green and white
#8x would hold the lead going down the back straightaway and into turn
three. When it appeared that Tex had the race won, Soll would have other
plans. Soll's #50 would hook up on the outside groove and pull even with
Tex's machine. The two would then bump, and at the line it was Brad Soll
taking the win by a photo finish. Tex would settle for second. Dave
Livingston, Ron Tilley, and Todd Morgan rounded out the top five.

Nick Deal would take the early lead in the 18 lap Ty's Outdoor Power
Equipment Pro Stock "A" feature. Deal would stay out front as a host a
of yellows plagued the race. With veteran Scotty Hartman on his tail,
Deal would keep his orange #55 to the top of the speedway. Then as the
checkered flag fell, it was the youngster Deal taking win; his second of
the season. Hartman would finish second. Chad Sanders came home third in
his #49x machine. Shawn Bulin and Tim Podraza finished fourth and fifth.

The 15 lap Midas B-Mod "A" main event would see three caution flags
before one lap would be complete. Once one lap got knocked off the
board, the race became the Scott Carlson show. Carlson would drive from
the 12th starting position to the lead in less than a hand full of laps.
Jared Hoefelman would use a series of yellow flags to work his way to
the second position. As the white flag flew, Carlson would have a
comfortable advantage over Hoefelman's #15h. Then as Carlson was
completing the final lap, there would be a spin in turn four causing the
yellow flag to be displayed and setting up a green-white-checkered
finish. As the cars restarted Hoefelman would try to make a run on the
bottom side of the speedway, but Carlson was to much as he went on to
victory. Hoefelman, Jim Fritz, Jeremy Longmeyer, and Greg Tichy were the
remainder of the top five.

The Stereo West Auto Toys Pro Hornets feature event would see an action
packed first couple of laps as the cars raced three and four wide
throughout the pack. The early favorite in the race were Steve
Mcconnell, Joe Baker, and Ole Olson. As halfway approached, Olson would
make contact with Baker going into turn three, Baker then would make
contact with Mcconnell causing his #33 to get sideways in front of the
field. Some how all three drivers kept their cars going in the right
direction! With the the banging taking place, Baker would take over the
top spot. As the white flag was being displayed, Baker would loose the
lead to Justin Soule who started tenth. Soule would lead the final two
laps on route to victory. Baker, Olson, Austin Kurtzer, and Mcconnell
rounded out the top five.

The Novice Crate feature race would see a strange ending as the yellow
flag was displayed just before the checkered flag came out. After the
cars drove onto the scales, the entire seven car field would be sent
back onto the track for a two lap shootout. Steven Saunders would lead
the final two laps to win the event. Rob Kosiski and Lindsey Yost
finished second and third. Amanda Leonardo and Scott Keffer finished
fourth and fifth.

The 8 lap Stereo West Auto Toys Novice Hornet feature seen Alex Fink
drive to victory from his front row starting spot. Sarah Preble, Kennin
Colestock, Darrin Hoegren, and Dan Rasmussen rounded out the top five.

Familiar faces in Red Cloud's victory lane

RED CLOUD, NE (July 13)-Six familiar faces made their way to The Speed Bowl's
victory lane Friday night, July 13, in Red Cloud, NE.

Hometown driver Lonnie Schriner put on a show for the local fans in the IMCA
Modified feature, or should I say marathon. Schriner started 18th in the 19-car
field after missing his heat race to change a motor. Josh Carpenter led the
opening lap until the red flag flew one lap later when Jon Thompson rolled in turn
one, causing an 11-car melee. Thompson was okay but done for the night. Carpenter
led the field back to green as 16 cars were able to continue. Brandon Blochlinger
took over the top spot on lap 4 and built up a good lead at the halfway mark of the
20-lap race, with Carpenter, Tim Watts, Schriner and Micaah Johnson rounding out
the top five. But a caution on lap 13 bunched the field, and on lap 15, Schriner
took the lead and went on to record his fifth win of the season at Red Cloud.
Blochlinger held on for second, followed by Watts, Johnson and Carpenter. Heat
race winners were Carpenter, Troy Johnson, and Watts.


In the IMCA Stock Car feature, Cory Struckhoff of Kensington, KS, led all 16 laps
for his second win of the year. Matt Streit was glued to Struckhoff's back bumper
the entire distance, and Streit tried to make a pass several times but could not
make it stick and had to settle for second. Josh Hudson finished third, followed
by Brett Behrends and Nathan Glendening. Jason McCartney and Jared Remus were
victorious in the heat races.

Mike Shriver looked to be on his way to victory in the IMCA Hobby Stock feature,
but after leading the first 11 laps, Shriver developed a left rear flat tire and
stopped on the track to bring out a caution. That handed the lead over to hometown
driver 'Smokin' Joe McDole who was able to hold off Kyle Bond the final 3 laps for
his second Red Cloud win this season. Heat one winner Jeromy Wagner finished
third, followed by Rocky Zimmerman and Jim Buss. Shriver won the other heat race.

Adam Sidlo & E.J. Kothe of Hastings got under race-long leaders Drew Barry & Ethan
Vogler on the final lap to win their sixth Cruiser feature of the season at 'The
Bowl'. Heat race winners Josh & Chris Graczyk finished third.

After winning his heat race, Andy Sole of Nelson drove away for his 5th win of the
season in the 4-cylinder Young Gun division.
The regular five divisions return this Friday night, July 20. Racing begins at
8:00 p.m.

USMTS: Countdown to ‘The Hunt’ begins with 32 possible champions

Although ‘The Hunt’ for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship doesn't begin for another month, drivers are already positioning themselves for a run at the title and the opportunity to dethrone eight-time reigning O’Reilly Auto Parts United States Modified Touring Series national champion Kelly Shryock.

Shryock, however, holds the advantage right now and hopes ‘The Hunt’ will be yet another glowing entry in his coveted racing résumé. His eighth O’Reilly USMTS title last year moved him ahead of such legends as Richard Petty, Michael Schumacher and Dale Earnhardt, and put Shryock among some elite company in the business of motorsports title collecting.

Shryock, 42, enjoyed his career-best season in 2006, scoring 31 wins and a remarkable 51 top-10 finishes in 59 starts against the best Modified drivers on the face of the planet. During one stretch last summer, the second-generation pilot from Fertile, Iowa, recorded a Series record 11 straight wins.

He's been no slouch in 2007 either. With 29 National Events in the books, Shryock has 10 wins and 25 top-10s — 24 of which have actually been top-5s. He currently leads the standings in all four regions, as well as the USMTS Southern Series where he has notched an additional four wins in eight starts.

On Tuesday, July 31, the Cresco (Iowa) Speedway will host the final points race in the Yeager Machine Northeast Region and will award the first set of National drivers a spot in ‘The Hunt’ for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship. The first week of August will see the other three regional champions crowned, beginning with the Central Region finale on Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Pepsi Scotland County Speedway in Memphis, Mo. From there, the rugged O’Reilly USMTS road warriors travel to the Humboldt (Kan.) Speedway for the final event in the Southern Region. Drivers head north to the Beatrice (Neb.) Speedway on Wednesday, Aug. 8, for the final Western Region points race and the last event before ‘The Hunt’ for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship begins on Thursday, Aug. 9, at the Thunderhill Speedway in Mayetta, Kan.

The 2007 season wraps up with ‘The Hunt’ for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship — 16 races in 32 days, culminating with the crowning of the 2007 O’Reilly USMTS National Champion at the 9th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree at the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., Sept. 6-8.

‘The Hunt’ will be comprised of the final 16 races of the season, with qualifying through prior regional events. The O’Reilly USMTS National Championship points system will be used at all regional events, with the top-10 in the final standings of each Region earning 10 points for first place, 9 points for second place and so forth, descending to 1 point for the 10th-place finisher in the region. In addition, each driver who attended all events in a region will earn 5 bonus points. The total points earned for all regions will serve as the base points that each driver will start ‘The Hunt’ with.

USMTS Southern Series drivers are also eligible to qualify for ‘The Hunt’. Drivers may use their best points combination from the four National Event regions or a combination of three regions and the USMTS Southern Series as their base points to begin ‘The Hunt’ with.

After base points have been established, the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship points system will be used at the remaining events for the drivers in ‘The Hunt’ to determine the 2007 O’Reilly USMTS National Champion.

Created for the fans, the ‘The Hunt’ serves as a “playoff” for the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship. While handicapping gives a slight advantage to the drivers that compete on the entire National Events circuit, each of the top-10 drivers in any of the four regions or the USMTS Southern Series has a legitimate shot at capturing the O’Reilly USMTS National Championship.

Carl Edwards Looking Forward to His Second Appearance at I-80 Speedway July 22

Greenwood, Nebraska (June 25, 2007)-Returning to his dirt racing roots, Nextel Cup driver Carl Edwards will make his second racing appearance at I-80 Speedway, Nebraska’s only NASCAR track, on Sunday, July 22. The driver of the #99 Office Depot Ford Fusion will be racing in the Dodge Super Late Model division against drivers including his younger brother Kenny Edwards, Joe Kosiski, Al Humphrey, Leon Zeitner, Jay Stewart, Jason Hobscheidt, Rick Stolley and others.
Carl won the Prelude to the Dream at Eldora Speedway earlier this year and raced at I-80 Speedway last year in the Grand National division.

“I’m looking forward to racing at I-80 Speedway again, especially being able to race against my brother Kenny,” said Carl. “He claims he’s going to beat me again this year, but we’ll see.” Last year, Kenny finished first in his heat race against his brother who finished second. Kenny finished third in the Grand National a feature and Carl finished 23rd because of an early wreck.
“This is a true battle between my brother and I, “said Kenny Edwards. “Ever since he started in NASCAR, I’ve been looking forward to taking him on and battling on the dirt!”

There also will be an autograph session from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. with Carl and Kenny, and fans will be allowed to bring only one item to be signed. Also, fans will not be able to have their picture taken with Carl or Kenny, but will be able to take pictures of them while waiting in line.
Carl Edwards is currently 6th in the NASCAR Nextel Cup standings and has five career wins. He also is currently leading the Busch Grand National Series points. Carl has been with Roush Racing since 2003 when he ran a full NASCAR Craftsman Truck schedule.

Kenny Edwards is currently 12th in the Dodge Super Late Model division in the NASCAR Whelen All American Series at I-80 Speedway, and is leading the rookie standings. He earned his first NASCAR victory on June 10, and followed it up with his second win just two weeks later. Currently a member of the Total Performance Parts Rising Stars, Kenny was the 2006 Grand National rookie of the year. This is his second year in the NASCAR Whelen All American Series.

Advance tickets are available for only $10 through Friday, July 20 and kids under 10 are free. Tickets prices after Friday, July 20 will be $15 and kids under 10 are free. Advance tickets can be ordered through the office, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tickets can be picked up at the office, or at the track “will call window.” Grandstand gates open at 4:00 p.m., hot laps at 6:00 p.m., and racing at 6:30 p.m. Pit passes without a NASCAR license are $30.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (July 10) – Lincoln County Raceway's ninth annual
Sandhills Shootout special is set for Friday and Saturday, July 20-21,
with top prizes of $5,000 for IMCA Modifieds and $2,000 for IMCA Sunoco
Stock Cars.

The Modified winner also joins the ballot for the 2008 Fast Shafts
All-Star Invitational. Second place is good for $2,500 and a minimum of
$200 will be paid to start the 24-car main event; the Stock Car
runner-up takes home $1,000 with a minimum of $100 paid to take the
green flag in that feature.

Feature purses are based on car counts of 50 Modifieds and 40 Stock Cars.

Sanctioned by IMCA for the first time, the Shootout will be a 51st
"bonus" race, allowing drivers in both divisions to apply points earned
at the North Platte show to home region as well as standings.

"The Sandhills Shootout is one of the premier events in the Midwest and
we're pleased to become associated with it," IMCA Vice President of
Operations Brett Root said. "We look forward to two outstanding nights
of racing."

Gates open at 5 p.m. and racing starts at 7 p.m. both days. Rain date is
Aug. 3-4.

Pit passes are $20. No one under the age of 14 will be allowed in the
pit area. Adult admission to the grandstand is $10 on Friday and $12 on
Saturday. A two-day pass will be available for $20.

Black Flags

Before I start, I'm not making any statement about current management, racers, the situation at hand regarding disgruntled drivers, etc.

Modified drivers Lucas Robinson (95r) and father Jesse Robinson (75r) are leaving Eagle. They've made it clear on the Dirtdrivers.com message board. It was another tough night in the modified division, with cars getting torn up and only nine of the 20 starters finishing the A feature.

Lucas spells the reasons out in his thread on dirtdrivers.com, entitled "Please return Cormack" (see user 'mod95r'). Angry about his treatment throughout the night, he's taking his team and heading out. I can respect that. He's putting his money where his mouth is. Where I've always loved the logic behind the saying, "that's why trailers have wheels and racetracks don't," it should never have to come to that.

I think communication between the officials and racers is important. It's also important to make sure you have the story straight and thought out. If a racer is being denied the opportunity to race they have a right to know why.

They may have some legitimate complaints.

But there is one thing I think should never go without penalty - ignoring the black flag. I was down in the Eagle Raceway infield and listening to the radio. Robinson made it clear that he saw and would not honor the flag more than once and didn't stop on the track until Roger Hadan came down there personally.

Who knows, it could have been a safety issue. Most drivers would head up to the work area to see what was going on and if it could be fixed so they can return.

If he were worried about going to the work area and being left out, he could have stopped on the track when prompted.

Ignoring the black flag so one can make a statement isn't fair to the other racers, who are burning fuel and it isn't fair to the fans who aren't interested in your issues. Take your beef with the promoter to the pits.

Again, I'm sorry to see them both go and adding to the list of drivers leaving out of anger. They've been steady fixtures at Eagle for several years. But if you got a problem with the promoter, don't try settling it on the track. It's only going to make things worse.

I'm not saying they don't have legitimate issues, but in light of last week's tragic accident showing emotion while behind the wheel of a car isn't the answer.

Sometimes you say more by NOT going on the track.

Nicholson Stays Smooth To Win Super Late Model Feature At I-80 Speedway

(GREENWOOD NEB., 07/08/2007) On a night where 90+ drivers braved the blistering summer heat to compete at I-80 Speedway; John Nicholson, Reese Coffee, Tim Podraza, Jesse Sobbing, and Rob Kosiski all visited victory lane as Shopko presented the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series and the annual Kids Bike Races.

The 25 lap Dodge Super Late Model "A" feature event seen the #77 of John Nicholson jump out to the early from his front row starting position. Just as lap one was being completed, the caution would fly for the #58 of Keith Mander Jr. who entered the spin cycle in turn four. When the green waved once again, it was still Nicholson out front with Rick Stolley and Alonzo Grosse close behind. The yellow would be displayed for the second time in the race when the #z62 of Justin Zeitner experienced a mechanical failure in turns one and two. With the field stacked up, it was easy to see that the two cars on the move were the #53 of Joe Kosiski and the #6 of Al Humphrey. By this time in the race the two had worked their way close to the top five after starting in the sixth row. On the restart Nicholson held his line on the top as Kosiski made his way into second using the bottom. Lap 19 would see the final caution period of the night as Troy Daly's #44 came to a slow on the back chute. The restart would give Kosiski a great opportunity to make the pass for the lead one final time, but it was John Nicholson driving as "Mr. Smooth" around the top of the track on route to victory. Kosiski and Humphrey finished second and third. Leon Zeitner and Al Zeitner rounded out the top five.

Jeremiah Sillman would lead the field to the green in the 18 lap Modified "A" main event. Sillman held the early advantage, but J.C. Wyman and Mike Johnson would apply pressure in the early laps. As a pair of yellows delayed the race on lap three, the car on the move was the #16 of Reese Coffee. Coffee would stick to the bottom rail of the track and work his way to the lead. Coffee would then keep the top spot on his way to victory, his 4th of the year. Sillman finished second, Wyman third, Jeff Stephens fourth, and Matt Richards fifth.

The 18 lap Certified Transmission Pro Am "A" feature seen Tim Podraza race from the fourth starting position to win the event. Shawn Bulin would start 10th and work his way up to finish 2nd. Dr. Nick Steier finished third, with Saturday nights Pro Stock winner Marty Steinbech finishing fourth. Chad Sanders drove his #49x to finish fifth.

The 15 lap Hobby Stock "A" feature event would start with Mike Mass rolling over on lap one. Mass would be uninjured as he quickly exited his car. When the race got back underway it was Jesse Sobbing jumping out to a huge advantage. Sobbing would drive to victory picking up the $50 Tom & Tiffs Family Restaurant bonus. Tom Myers came home second. Chad Bassinger, Jimmy Nichols, and Rick Munson rounded out the top five.

Rob Kosiski would start on the pole and win the 8 lap Novice Crate "A" feature event. Micah Brown would run a close second with Ryan Gladwin finishing third. 15 year old Jase Kaser finished fourth and Kortney Kosiski was fifth.

Kosiski Takes Exciting Crate Late Model Feature Win At I-80 Speedway

(GREENWOOD NEB., 07/07/07) As the blistering hot sun faded into a cool Nebraska night, the action heated up as Andrew Kosiski, Marty Steinbech, Scott Carlson, Nick Clifford, Dave Christensen, Rob Kosiski, and Kennin Colestock all visited victory lane as Stereo West Auto Toys presented the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at I-80 Speedway.

The 25 lap Great Clips Crate Late Model "A" feature event started out with Shawn Harker taking the lead in is newly bought #2v machine. Harker would ride the high groove as the "Jackhammer" Dave Livingston worked the middle towards the front. Caution would fly on lap 4 as Gary Joens Jr. made contact with the back straightaway wall. As the race got back underway the #2x of Andrew Kosiski showed strength by making it a three horse race for the lead. As lap 16 approached, a three way battle for the lead would take place. Harker, Livingston, and Kosiski would race three wide all the way around the 4/10 of a mile oval. The three would be glued side by side for three laps straight, which gave the #97d and the #1 of Jason Hobscheidt time to catch up. With the top five battling in a group, Kosiski took the lead for the first time on lap 19, then disaster struck for one of the top runners. Harkers #2v would come to a slow in turns one and two with a flat right rear tire. With six laps to go, the race would be set up for a wild west shootout between Kosiski, Livingston, Doll, and Hobscheidt. As the green waved it was Kosiski running the top with Doll and Hobscheidt following. Kosiski would strecth the lead as the laps ran down, but Doll would not give up. When the white flag was shown it was between Kosiski and Doll. Doll would trail by two car lenghts as the two made their way down the back chute. Doll would then make one last run for the lead, but he would come up short as Andrew Kosiski took the checkered flag. Hobscheidt would finish third behind Doll, Jeff Tilley ran fourth, and Livingston came home fifth.

Marty Steinbech would take the lead from the drop of the green flag in the 18 lap Ty's Outdoor Power Equipment Pro Stock "A" feature event. The race would not get one lap in the books before the caution flew. Once it flew, it flew often. Over seven yellow flags plagued the race, but through it all it was Steinbech staying out front. Steinbech's #5 would receive pressure from the #25x of Joe Feyen, but Steinbech held strong the entire race on his way to victory. Feyen, Rick Negrete, Denny Berghahn Jr., and Shawn Bulin rounded out the top five

The 15 lap Midas B-Mod feature race seen the #z00 of Lacey Tuttle jump out to an early lead from her outside front row starting spot. The yellow flag would also dominate this feature event, as it was displayed a hand full of time for incidents, including a hard impact by the #12 of Buddy Ray Jones in turn three. As the laps ticked off, it was veteran Scott Carlson and Rookie Jared Hoefelman working their way to the front. Carlson would make it to the lead with Hoefelman in his tire tracks. The race would end just like that, with Carlson taking the win. Howfelman would finish second, Jim Fritz third, Bill Bader Jr. fourth, and Nick Hermsen fifth.

The Midwest Linings 305 Sprint Cars would see a half dozen speed demons make their way to I-80 Speedway. The 12 lap feature would see a couple a cautions flags before the first lap was complete. The #99 of Matthew Stelzer would enter the spin cycle in turn three, and the #99c of Nick Clifford and the #3d of Ryan Voss would tangle in turn one. When the race got under way it was the #45 of Dan Satriano out front. The 99's of Stelzer and Clifford would pass the #45, and then Clifford made the final pass of the night on Stelzer for the victory with a few laps remaining.

The #74C of Dave Christensen would make his way from the fourth row to win the 12 lap Stereo West Auto Toys Pro Hornet feature. Pink Fink Jr came home second, followed by Justin Soule, Austin Kurtzer, and Cory Askeland.

Rob Kosiski would wheel his #52 to victory in the 8 lap Novice Crate "A" main. Kosiski would work from the third row to win by a comfortable margain. Lindsey Yost finished second, Steven Sauders, Amanda Leonardo, Scott Keffer, Ryan Gladwin, and Ben Bolte rounded out the field.

The 8 lap Stereo West Auto Toys Novice Hornet feature event would see the top two runners in Thomas Liechti and Jacob Brown get knocked out of contention for the win as contact was made with a few laps remaining in the event. That would give first time driver Kennin Colestock the oppourtunity he was looking for as he took the win. Darrin Hoegren finished second, Liechti third, Dan Rasmussen fourth, and Russell Johnson fifth.

Droud Jr, Alcorn, Wulf and Noonan Heat up the 1/3 Mile at Eagle Raceway

A hot and windy summer day at Eagle Raceway, America’s Home Track turned to a cool and breezy summer evening as the second night of Bud Light 360 Wingless Sprints arrived. Lots of fans took advantage of the $5 admission price by bringing a toy during Christmas in July night, presented by Colby Ridge.

The heats ran nearly without incident, and after intermission with the sun setting, the cooler temperatures took over just in time for the feature races.

In the Stereo West Auto Toys IMCA Sport Compact B main Ron Frank grabbed the lead in the 18R, followed by the #14 of Joey Danley, the #9 of Mark McKinney and Steve Shepard in the 20T. The running order didn’t change until 4 laps to go when McKinney moved under Danley to take over the 2nd spot. On the very next lap the #24 of Mike Rice also passed Danley to move into third. On the white flag lap Danley got back around Rice. At the finish line it was Ron Frank, Mark McKinney and Joey Danley.

Next up was the B feature for the Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds. At the start Dan Wayman got out front in his 5ST with Tim Pickens in the 00 in 2nd and the 12X of George Haney in 3rd. That was the order when the checkered flag flew.

The first A Feature saw the Stereo West Auto Toys take to the track. Jeremy Noonan took advantage of his front row starting position to grab the lead. The 51 of Amanda Riley and the 00 of Barry Kinnersley followed him. With only 2 laps down Mike Rice had moved his #24 all the way up to 3rd place, after transferring from the B. He followed that by taking over 2nd place on the very next lap, followed by the #2 of Dan Riley. Riley took over 2nd from Rice with 8 laps left, after a back-and-forth battle around the track. Riley held his position for only 2 laps however, retiring with a flat tire. With 6 laps to go it was Noonan, Rice and Kinnersley. Noonan held off his competitors to take home the victory.

Jeremy is still in his first year of competition in a race car, and this was his very first A Feature win. “I was lucky enough to start on the front row, and just held on to win it,” he said. “Last week, we got disqualified for having the wrong tire in the wrong place on the car. We fixed that this week and managed to win,” he continued. “The track was really fast tonight, it was great to get the win. I want to thank everyone who has helped out, but especially all my fans in Section C” he finished.

Next on the track was the Valentino’s Pizza IMCA Hobby Stocks. Brad Schreiner pulled into the lead in his #10 followed by the #93 of Thorn Marsh, the #21 of Derrick Noonan and Nick Beckman in the #22. With 12 laps to go Beckman got around Noonan for third place. On the very next lap Noonan dropped rapidly back through the field on the backstretch and came to a halt at the very top of turn #3. Nearly all the cars managed to bypass him, but the #94 of Mike Hansen slammed hard into Noonan’s rear bumper, bringing out the red flag. Both cars were forced to return to the pits. On the restart it was Schreiner, Marsh, Beckman and the #86 of Justin Wulf in fourth. On the very first lap after racing resumed Beckman moved into 2nd position followed by Wulf who took over the 3rd spot. Shortly thereafter, Shane Hiatt in the #21H moved into 4th. Wulf then Moved around Beckman for 2nd place with just 3 laps to go. On the white flag lap Schreiner slowed, allowing Wulf to take over the lead. At the checkers it was Wulf, followed by Beckman, Hiatt and the #14 of Ron Novak. This was Wulf’s third feature win of the year, after having won the Hobby Stock Championship last year.

“This was definitely my kind of track tonight, I liked it a lot. I started outside of the 6th row, and am thrilled with the win,” Wulf stated. “We broke an axle at Rising City earlier this week, and maybe that was lucky. Because, if it had been here it would have been a lot worse,” he continued. He finished by saying “I want to thank everyone on my crew, and all the others who help me get out on the track. Also, I want to thank all of the fans for coming out every week. The Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds then moved onto the 1/3-mile high banks. The 22J of Justin Jurgens grabbed the lead with the 28N of Daniel Neeman in 2nd, followed by the #51 of Cliff Turner and the 10K of Dan McCown. On the 2nd lap Neeman got around Jurgens, relegating him to the 2nd spot with McCown grabbing 3rd and Norm Ziegenbein taking over 4th spot in the 1Z. Doug Deterding in the #13 and Ed “Doc” Raines in the 11AA got together going down the back stretch, resulting in a very hard crash by Deterding into the retaining wall at the back stretch pit entrance. Deterding’s car was too badly damaged to continue. On the restart Raines moved into the 4th position, but Cliff Turner spun in turns 3 & 4 also collecting the #12X of George Haney. Again, both cars were taken to the pits. The running order on the restart was Jurgens, Neeman, McCown and Raines. By the time there were 16 laps to go, defending track champion Chris Alcorn had advanced all the way up to 5th place in his #3. On the next lap he moved into 4th and 5 laps later he momentarily got all the way up to the #2 spot before a yellow flag moved him back to 3rd. On the restart Alcorn got around Neeman for the runner-up position and Raines moved back up to 4th. With 7 laps remaining McCown came into contact with another racer and rolled numerous times past the flag stand as his left side tires dug in after he spun sideways. He ended up coming to a rest on his roof, but crawled from the car relatively uninjured. After the decision was made to cut the race to a Green, White, Checkered finish due to time constraints the running order for the restart was Jurgens, Alcorn Neeman and Raines. As the cars came around to take the white flag Alcorn moved under Jurgens at the flag stand and held on for the win. The finishing order was Alcorn, Jurgens and Neeman.

“We started outside the 5th row because of some penalties in the heat races. The car felt pretty good in our heat, but we made a few changes for the feature and I guess they worked” Alcorn stated. “We had to go out with a flat on the very first lap of the feature, but managed to work our way back to the front after starting again at the very end of the field. It was a pretty good track tonight; with racing lines at the top, in the middle and on the bottom. We just went where ever the car in front of us wasn’t running and got around them,” he added.

The Bud Light Wingless 360 Sprints were the last A Feature of the night. Ryan Kitchen moved his #21into the lead after several false starts. He held it until he spun coming out of turn #4 while leading. Luckily, only 1 car was collected and they were able to restart. Kitchen’s evening was over however, as he was towed to the pits with a broken front axle. The race restarted single file with the #4 of Eric Shulz on the pole with the 96KX of Adam Gullion in second and the #51 of Doug Martens in third. On the very first lap Gullion and Martens moved around Shulz for the #1 and #2 positions. Don Droud Jr., winner of the first night of wingless sprints had advanced all the way to the #3 spot in his #2 with only 3 laps down, and took over 2nd from Martens just 3 laps later. He then set his sights on Gullion. Using all the skills he’s learned from many years in winged and wingless sprints as well as midgets he moved under Gullion after Gullion was held up by a lapped car with 6 laps remaining. As the came across the finish line for the checkered flag it was Droud Jr., Gullion and the #77 of John Klabunde.

“It was just a matter of a fast car on a good track tonight” Droud Jr. said. “I want to thank all my sponsors, including Rasmussen Auto Supply, Schmeiding Concrete, Harris Decals, Lincoln Drywall and Erickson Chiropractic. Also, a big thanks to my father, brother, brother-in-law, nephew and especially Dawn. Without them, I couldn’t be out here. They make it possible for me to win” he added.

The finale of the night’s racing was a 3 lap Challenge Race between Chris Alcorn and Justin Jurgens. Jurgens won the right to take on Alcorn by finishing 2nd in the A Main. Jurgens took advantage of his inside starting position to hold Alcorn off until Alcorn passed him at the flag stand at the completion of the first lap.

Fourth win for #4 at Red Cloud

RED CLOUD, NE (July 6)—Hometown driver Lonnie Schriner, driver of the #4
IMCA Modified, picked up his fourth feature win of the season at The
Speed Bowl in Red Cloud, NE, Friday evening, July 6.

Brandon Blochlinger led the first 4 laps of the 20-lap feature before
'The Red Cloud Rocket' powered his way around the top side to take
command. Schriner then pulled away from the field to win by a
straightaway over Tim Watts and Blochlinger. Troy Johnson and Micaah
Johnson rounded out the top five. Heat race winners were Schriner and
Watts.

In the IMCA Stock Car feature, heat two winner Jason McCartney took the
lead at the drop of the green and led the first seven laps before heat
one winner Matt Streit of Guide Rock took the top spot coming to the
crossed flags at the halfway mark of the 16-lap race. 'The Hammer' Josh
Hudson then dove under Streit in turn 2 on lap 12 to take the lead,
which he held to the checkers for his second in a row at Red Cloud.
Streit finished second, followed by Brett Behrends, McCartney, and
Nathan Glendening.

Rocky Zimmerman of Ayr won his first IMCA Hobby Stock feature at 'The
Bowl' this season. Mike Shriver took the lead at the drop of the green
of the 14-lap race, which was red-flagged on lap 3 when Joe McDole
rolled and was hit by Brent Vanous. Both drivers were okay but done for
the night. Shriver led the field back to green, but was passed by
Zimmerman on lap 10. 'The Z Man' led the final laps for the victory.
Jerry Hudson finished second, followed by Shriver, Kyle Bond, and heat
two winner Delbert Selvage. Jared Lewis won the other heat race.

Terry Gradig & Jeremy Teselle of Downs, KS, were able to hold off heat
race winners and point leaders Adam Sidlo & E.J. Kothe to score their
first Cruiser feature win of the season at Red Cloud. Josh & Chris
Graczyk finished third.

After winning his heat race, Andy Sole of Nelson drove away for his 4th
win of the season in the 4-cylinder Young Gun division. Joshua Bodenus
was second, followed by Troy Porter.

The regular five divisions return this Friday night, July 13. Racing
begins at 8:00 p.m.

Pace Lap? - Random thoughts and other junk

I guess this will suffice for my editorial. Things are going crazy lately and they also involve me moving BACK to Lincoln! Not to say I mind though and yes, everything's all right.

I appreciated the nice comments about my piece on Mike. Fortunately Mike's doing better.

What continues to impress me is that when times are down, the community steps up and takes charge for the greater good. Guys like Dr. Ed Raines are an example. The safety crew was all over the incident as they are each week. Eagle is fortunate to have them around.

Unfortunately, I'm a little angry about safety. So, I'll just sum them up in random bites:

-Why has every instance of a throttle sticking at Eagle seem to happen in turn 1 going into the pits? It never sticks in turns 2, 3, or 4. I'm not saying it was stuck throttles or anything like that contributing to Mike Cacak's accident, but that seems to be the going excuse when someone comes into the pits hot. And, I am glad that people haven't come down on the driver of the modfied that hit Mike. I'd hate to be in his shoes. Remember that this accident was just that - an ACCIDENT.

-On the other hand, I think some of the attitudes (myself included) in the pits regarding safety have become a bit lax. People run around too much, they stand in places that say "no standing" and need to have common sense and a pit awareness. That's why I've always been against spectators in the pits.

-On the third hand - track owners need to enforce the rules and crack hard on the FIRST instance, not the one where someone gets hurt. Flooring it, whipping donuts out of anger, standing where you shouldn't and such should be dealt with immediately, not when someone gets hurt.

Earlier in the year I was defending the "bouncy boxing" match between RJ Macku and Rick Bradley. Now I still think it's a fun and interesting idea if the incident stayed on the track...but given that Macku hit a car driving in the pits, well I'm going to change my tune a little. I admit I was wrong for part of it and say that the incident in the pits should've been dealt with as a separate incident, with a penalty that can't be "fought" out of.OK, enough of that.

Other random thoughts:

-Is anyone else getting scared at the number of tracks closing/switching hands/etc. in mid season?

-Can we see a good ASCS race on a track bigger than 1/3 mile?

-Is a $5000 to win Hornet race just going to create another class that starts to outprice itself?

Here's one for you...Ever seen one of those "East Coast" 358 modifieds? You may want to get used to them, that's all I can say.

JMS Cornhusker Midget Challenge Fans & Teams to Tour Museum of American Speed

With Bill Smith's blessing, Junction Motor Speedway has arranged a tour of
the "Museum of American Speed" formerly known as The Smith Collection
Museum. The tour which is available to all JMS/Cornhusker Midget Challenge
Fans and Race Teams will take place on Wednesday-July 25 from 10AM to 12
noon. The Museum of American Speed is located at 531 Westgate Blvd. in
Lincoln, Nebraska. The museum consists of 3 floors of racing history,
numerous auto displays and the world's largest collection of antique racing
engines. Tour participants will need to provide their own transportation to
and from the museum. Guides will tour participants in groups of fifteen.

Junction Motor Speedway will need a 'head count' no later than noon
Tuesday-July 24th so that the museum may plan accordingly. Generally there
is a $10.00 per person charge for this 2 hour tour. 'Speedy Bill' will NOT
charge an admission fee for the JMS/ Cornhusker Midget Challenge tour
groups. Participants MUST be at the museum by 9:45 AM on the 25th to tour at
no charge. Any arrivals after 10AM will have to pay the $10.00 to tour on
another day. The Museum of American Speed is located approximately 40
minutes east of Junction Motor Speedway.

Further Suspensions at I-80

From I-80 Speedway:

Way too early this season, many battles have erupted and tempers have flared between I-80 Speedway drivers, crew members and car owners on the race track and in the pit area. I-80 Speedway Race Officials and Management will not tolerate the behaviors exhibited this past weekend, June 30th and July 1st, as this behavior gives our great sport a black eye and the race fans an embarrassing spectacle to witness. Effective immediately, I -80 Speedway has rendered the following penalties for last weekend:

For June 30, 2007:
#1s B Mod driver, Scott Carlson is being assessed a 75 point penalty and a $100 fine for misconduct in the tech area, including physical contact with another driver and physical contact with a NASCAR official. Carlson will not be disqualified for the June 30th incident as it occurred after the race during post-race technical inspection.

For July 1, 2007:
#99 Hobby Stock driver, Jesse Sobbing is being assessed a 25 point penalty and $25 fine for intentional contact after the race was concluded,
#00 Super Late Model driver, Clint Benson is being assessed a 25 point penalty and $50 fine for intentional contact after the race and for intent to start a physical confrontation ($25 for contact and $25 for the intent),
#55 Grand National driver Mike Merrill is being assessed a 14 day suspension, effective immediately, for a second violation of intentional rough driving, and the penalty is assessed on the driver only.
#4k Grand National driver Josh Krug is being assessed 75 point penalty and a $100 fine for the following misconduct: driver, owner and crew members on the track and entering or approaching the pit area of another driver and attempting to initiate a verbal/physical confrontation.

Humphrey & #55 DQ and Suspension at I-80

From I-80 Speedway:

Jul 03 2007 - BLACK 55 DQ’D FOR 6/30; SUSPENSION AND FINE IMPOSED.
The following penalty is being assessed after post tech for the Crate Late Model division on Saturday, June 30:

#55 Crate Late Model driver Al Humphrey is being disqualified for the June 30, 2007 Crate Late Model heat and feature race for failure to pass the fuel test conducted during post-tech. This technical violation will result in a 30-day suspension from the Saturday Crate Late Model program for driver Al Humphrey, car owner Mike Merrill, and the black #55 Crate Late Model race car/team. In addition, a $1,000 fine has been assessed for violation of the rule listed below.

SECTION 1: CRATE ENGINE RULES
F. Gasoline can be premium grade unleaded pump gas or a spec racing fuel to be announced. No alcohol, ethanol or oxygen bearing additives allowed.
A representative from the #55 has notified the office that they will be protesting this ruling.

I-80 this weekend: Gold Rush and Bike Races

(GREENWOOD NEB., 06/28/07) As the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series hits the
dirt of I-80 Speedway for the first full weekend in July, all the attention
will be focused on the biggest kids weekend of the year thus far!

Saturday July 7, Stereo West Auto Toys presents the Kids Gold Rush Money
Grab. All kids 12 and under will make their way to the front straightaway
during intermission where hundreds of dollars in coins will be spilled
throughout the dirt of I-80 Speedway. Plus all Otoe and Washington County
residents will receive FREE grandstand admission with I.D. Gates open at
5:30pm with hot laps at 6:30 and racing at 7:00pm. Grandstand admission is
$8 for adults, $7 for seniors (62 and older) and juniors (11-17), Kids 10
and under are FREE.

On Sunday July 8, Shopko presents the annual Kids Bike Races. Kids 12 and
under will take to the speedway for high paced bicycle action. Each age
division will have one kid walk away with a brand new set of wheels courtesy
of Shopko. Plus all adults will be entered in a drawing for a brand new
colored TV. Gates open at 5:00pm with hot laps at 6:00pm and racing at
6:30pm. Grandstand admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors (62 and
older) and juniors (11-17), Kids 10 and under are FREE.

Next weekend, Douglas County Residents with ID will be admitted free on
Saturday, July 14, and all Boys and Girls Scouts in uniform will be admitted
free on Sunday, July 15.

"Adversity doesn't build character. It reveals character." - Vince Lombardi

Last Saturday was particulary hard on me. To those who don't know, Eagle Raceway official Mike Cacak was struck by a modified as the car entered the pits. Mike suffered severe injuries to his legs and was airlifted out of the racetrack.

Fortunately, he exited surgery and it appears his legs will heal. But he's got a long road ahead of him with rehabilitation and likely will not walk the same again.

I couldn't stand to get close to the scene, and out of respect for the safety crew kept my distance. There was an understandably heavy mood in the air the whole night. I spent the evening taking pictures, but always looking over my shoulder and thinking about the family, all of them I've known for over 20 years.

Mike drove for my father, Dean Orth in the early 80's when my dad stepped out on his own as a car owner in the #30D Domino's Pizza car. They've been friends since, going to Knoxville together, and being part of the "New" Eagle Raceway when Craig Cormack and my father took control of the place in 1997. Mike's been a fixture at Eagle Raceway for many years. His wife Betty is the heart and soul of the kitchen operation and is a tireless worker at the track, often being the first employee to arrive and the last one to clock out. Daughter Christine has worked in the kitchen and now up in the scorer's tower, and son Justin mans the beer windows.

None of them needed the money, they're all successful outside of the racetrack. It's a testament to their love of the sport and their work ethic.

The Cacak's are the definition of "good people." They've always lent helping hands and are genuine folk. These are the kind of people who offered my wife and me shelter from the storm that produced the Hallam tornado in their home near the track instead of driving into the heart of the torrent going back to Lincoln. They work hard and they are generous.

So it pained me to see the grief on their faces as one by one they rushed to the scene. I was shellshocked. When people ask, "why do bad things happen to good people," this is what they mean.

They've all got a long road ahead of them but knowing their dedication to each other and their commitment to following through on the job makes me know that everything will be all right. And in tradition with their giving spirit, they'll provide inspiration on family strength and working through difficult times.

Humphrey Ends Independence Weekend With A Win At I-80 Speedway

(GREENWOOD NEB., 07/01/07) With Independence weekend coming to a close, it
was Al Humphrey, Reese Coffee, Dave Cook, and Jimmy Nichols all visiting
victory lane as Waste Management presented the NASCAR Whelen All-American
Series at I-80 Speedway.

The 25 lap Dodge Super Late Model "A" feature event seen veterans Joe
Kosiski and Al Humphrey lead the field to the green flag. Humphrey would
take the early advantage using the high line of the track to lead lap one.
The race would be halted three times during the event, and each restart
Kosiski would challenge Humphrey for the top spot. Kosiski would pull along
side of Humphrey's #6 on a few occasions, but "The Hombre" was to strong. Al
Humphrey would take the double checkered flags for his first Super Late
Model win of the year. Kosiski was second. Leon Zeitner finished third,
followed by Scott Koskovich and Jason O'Brien. With the win, Humphrey will
pad his lead in the Nebraska State Points standings.

Reese Coffee would start in the 6th row and charge through the field to win
the 18 lap Modified "A" feature. Coffee would use the bottom side of the
speedway to launch his #16 to lead. After that it was smooth sailing, as
Coffee took his third win of the 2007 season. Matt Richards would finish
second after starting 8th. Bob Zoubek, Jeff Stephens, and J.C. Wyman rounded
out the top five.

The 20 lap City Weekly Grand National "A" feature was the excitement race of
the night. ARCA series driver Josh Krug would jump to an early lead in his
#4k machine. With Krug out front, all eyes were on the #55 of Mike Merrill.
Merrill would drive from the 12th starting position through the field and
would make his way to second by lap 14. With the yellow flag flying on lap
14, the stage was set up for a marvelous finish. When the green waved it was
Krug taking the high line through one and two, and Merrill hugging the
bottom. Merrill would then slide up the track where contact was made between
the #55 and #4k. Krug's car would climb the wall as Merrill went spinning
down the back chute. Third place runner Todd Hipnar would enter the spin
cycle as the entire field weaved through the carnage. All three of the top
runners would be taken out of the race. With Krug, Merrill, and Hipnar out
of the picture, that handed the lead to the #2 of Dwane Pospisil. Pospisil
would lead the field to the green, but it was Dave Cook who grabbed the top
spot and took the checkered flags. Dave Doll finished second, Pospisil
third, Ron Tilley finished fourth with Curt Drake coming home fifth.

Josh True would be the dominant car early on in the 15 lap Hobby Stock "A"
main event. True would stay out front with Jesse Sobbing close behind. The
two drivers would run first and second until a few laps remaining when the
yellow came out. On the restart, Sobbing would try and pass True on the
outside, but Sobbing's #99 would run out of real estate and make contact
with True's #2 on the front straightaway. The slight contact would open the
door for the #6 of Jimmy Nichols. Nichols would drive from third to first,
and after taking the lead he would never look back on route to his first
win. True would finish second, Rick Munson third, Chad Bassinger fourth and
Tom Myers fifth. Nichols would pick up the Tom & Tiffs Family Restaurant
bonus for winning the feature event.
