World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series At a Glance: Huset's Speedway & Eagle Raceway
WHAT
• The World of Outlaws head north to the upper Midwest to begin the Holidays weekend with a stop at Huset's Speedway in South Dakota on Friday, July 3 for the series only stop at the high-banked bullring this season after Mother Nature was victorious at the track in early May. The series then makes a trip south to Eagle Raceway in Nebraska on the Fourth of July for their only race of 2009 in the Cornhusker state. Craig Dollansky won both events at Huset's Speedway last season and also was victorious at Eagle Raceway. In the last eight events for the series at Huset's there has been seven different drivers pick up wins and five different winners in the last five events at Eagle.
WHEN
• On Friday July 3 at Huset's Speedway, the pit gates will open at Noon Central, with the grandstand gates opening at 5 p.m. Central and time trials set for 7:30 p.m. Central.
• On Saturday, July 4 at Eagle Raceway, the pit gates will open at 2 p.m. Central, with the grandstand gates opening at 4 p.m. Central with hot laps set for 6 p.m. Central and racing at 7:30 p.m. Central.
WHERE
• Huset's Speedway is located in Brandon, South Dakota. Take I-90 east of Sioux Falls to exit 406, then go south three miles on State Road 11.
• Eagle Raceway is located in Eagle, Nebraska. Take I-80 to exit 420 then travel 11 miles south on State Road 63.
TICKETS
• On Friday, July 3 at Huset's Speedway, adult tickets will be $35, with tickets for juniors (ages 8-14) just $5 and kids 7-under will be admitted free of charge. I-80 Results 6-28-09
(Greenwood, Ne., 06/28/2009) A record crowd on Fan Appreciation Night saw
some action packed racing at I-80 Speedway as Jesse Sobbing and Chad Dills
won the IMCA Sports Mod Twin features, Alex Fink and Jake McCloud won the
IMCA Sports Compact Twin features, Tyler Zander won the IMCA Crate Late
Model Feature, Dave Doll won the NASCAR Late Nodel feature and Rick Negrete
won the Pro-am feature.
In Sports Mod feature 1, it took Jesse Sobbing just 2 laps to get to the
front taking the lead when Ed McConnell spun out in turn 2. Rick Rohr had a
strong 2nd place finish but was disqualified for using an illegal rearend.
Kyle Harpster then inherited 2nd place ahead of Jeremy Longmeyer.
In the 2nd Sports Mod feature Denny Berghahn Jr took the early lead only to
lose it on the back chute to Dennis Cook. Chad Dills, making the long trip
from Harlan, Iowa, grabbed the lead on lap 3 and stayed out front as point
leader Robert Tippery fought with Cook for 2nd place. At the finish it was
Tippery in 2nd and Cook in 3rd.
In the Crate Late Model feature Shevi Collins took the early lead only to
lose it on lap 3 to Tyler Zander. Zander went on to record his 1st career
feature win.
In Sports Compact feature 1 Mark Lamer took the early lead. Joe Baker took
the lead on lap 2 and Pete Fink Jr. took over on lap 3. In the end it was
another stirring battle between the Fink brothers, but this time Alex
prevailed with Pete in 2nd.
In Sports Compact feature 2 Dave Christensen took the early lead and then
swapped it with Ole Olsen. Christensen took the lead back on lap 4 and
stayed there the rest of the way. But in the Tech area he refused a claim on
his car and was disqualified giving the win to 2nd generation driver Jake
McCloud.
In the NASCAR Late Model feature Brad Soll grabbed the early lead but lost
it before one lap was complete to Jason Hobscheidt. The battle behind
Hobscheidt intensified as Andrew Kosiski, Dave Cook,, Soll, Kent Schimenti
and Todd Hipnar battled for 2nd place. Restarts played a key role in this
race as Dave Doll worked his way to the front. Doll took the lead on lap 22
of the 25 lap feature. Hobscheidt held on to 2nd ahead of Cook, Kosiski and
Schimenti. For Schimenti it was his best finish of the year.
In the Pro-am feature Mark Zordel jumped to the early lead and held it til
lap 6 when Rick Negrete took over. Negrete then rolled to his first win of
the year over Adam Armstrong, Scotty Hartman, Chad Sanders, and the "Racing
Md." Nick Steier. Negrete is the defending point champion and is currently
leading this years point standings.

Eagle Results 6-27-09
Take a great crowd, add in a great car count and even greater racing and you have Freedom Fest, sponsored by Jack Daniels at “America’s Home Track” Eagle Raceway Saturday evening as we honored all military, fire & rescue and police personnel.
There was one minor incident in the heat races when Jeremy Noonan got turned coming out of turn 4 and ended up with an easy rollover and then backed into the front stretch wall.
The first lap of the Monster IMCA Modified Feature race was called back when Doug Deterding’s #13 and another car came to a halt in turns 1 & 2, bringing out the caution. As the first official lap was completed Justin Jurgens’ 22J, Bob Ruisinger in the 7, the S56 of Scott Bivens, the 27 of Clint Homan and Lance Borgman’s 76 were the top 5. The second lap saw Clint Homan spin out in turn 2 and Dan Nelson’s 94 get hooked to the 18 of Terry Richards and they came to a halt on the back stretch. Stacey Wilhelm used the restart to jump up to fourth. The next time around Johnny Saathoff’s 96J vaulted all the way up to the 3rd spot right behind Bivens who had moved up to second as Wilhelm also got around Ruisinger. Saathoff moved past Bivens on the next circuit, only to come to a halt in turn four with rear suspension problems. When Saathoff went to the pits it allowed Jordan Grabouski to advance to 4th. Dylan Smith was the next to make a big move as he leapfrogged both Grabouski and Wilhelm to garner third with Grabouski tailing him around Wilhelm to retain fourth. With 10 laps left Jurgens suffered a flat right rear tire and brought out the yellow flag. He hurried into the pits and was able to rejoin the pack at the rear before the green flew again. Grabouski needed two laps before taking second from Bivens as Smith also advanced to grab the lead. Borgman remained in fourth, setting the stage for the hardest fought contest of the race. With Bivens running high and Borgman taking the low line the two fought tooth and nail all the way to the checkers, neither one moving out of his line and swapping the two positions repeatedly. With two to go Ruisinger and Jurgens came to a stop in turn 1, resulting in Jurgens being black-flagged for his second stoppage of the action. The top four spots were unchanged at the finish with Smith winning, Grabouski second, Bivens taking third narrowly and Borgman having to settle for fourth. Smith and Grabouski are now tied for the points lead.
“The track was really different tonight, dry slick in one & two and tacky in three and four. I had to muscle the car in 3 & 4 to let it work in 1 & 2. I missed a few crashes and worked my way to the front, holding off Grabouski for the win” Dylan said. Dylan’s sponsors include Eckley Racing Engines, Jet Racing, Active Life Family Chiropractic. “I want to say thanks to Mike & Lisa Goecke my car owners, Kyle Schamp, and especially Mom, Dad, Grandma and Grandpa.
The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks were up next. Keith Dragoo lead lap 1 in his 77D with Josh Kennell’s 71K second, Joe Ryan’s 32 third and the 33 of Eric Hanson rounding out the top four. On the second lap Kennell took the lead, Hanson grabbed second and Roy Armstrong moved to third in his 6R. Lap three saw Nick Beckman’s 22 move up to fourth. The caution was displayed on lap 5 when Murray Haugen’s #8 spun out in turn two. Armstrong took advantage of the racers being bunched up to take over second on the restart lap and then snagged the lead the next time around. He and Kennell swapped positions for quite awhile before Armstrong managed to take a slight lead. There were 6 laps left when Hanson grabbed second and Beckman came up to third the next lap. There were 4 circuits remaining when the B4 of Ben Becher spun in turn 2. The order at that time was Armstrong, Hanson, Beckman and Kennell. Beckman moved up to second with 2 laps left as RJ Macku moved into 4th. After the white flag flew Dragoo spun out in 2 causing a green/white/checkered finish. On the last lap Macku came up to finish third. The finish saw Armstrong with the victory, Beckman in second, Macku in third and Hanson fourth. As the top 4 entered the tech area Derick Noonan claimed Armstrong’s engine. In order to keep the win and the points Armstrong accepted the claim.
“I’ve had bad luck the last two weeks here, not even finishing the A, and I figured that I had turned my luck around until I got claimed. When I headed here tonight I just wanted to finish the race, but I got a couple of breaks and got to the front” Armstrong stated. He concluded the interview by saying “I want to thank the Tuttle bunch for helping me out every week and the Borgman crew too. I was here alone tonight, but my friends here at the track really helped me out”. Armstrong’s only sponsors are his sister Bonnie and her friend Diane.
As the Auto Trans Matic IMCA Sport Compacts turned their first lap the right front tire came off of a racecar, forcing a complete restart. The 32J of Jeff Davis was the first to lead a lap with the 3s of Ricky Harris in second and Garrett Rech’s 55 in third. Rech grabbed the point on lap two. As the pack came around into the first turn on lap three Jack Prall III’s 45 was the meat in the middle of the sandwich as he had Joey Danley’s 14 outside of him and Harris was underneath him. All three cars came to a halt after Prall was forced up onto two wheels and Harris hit the wall hard. That made the running order Rech, Davis and Adam Vrbka’s 7V in third. With 11 laps left Vrbka moved past Davis and the next time around Elliot Halvorsen grabbed fourth. One more lap was in the books when Vrbka’s steering went out on him as he collected Rech. Vrbka’s racer hit the wall very hard and he left behind the tow truck with Rech joining him in the pits. Davis was in first, Halvorsen second, Mary Lenz’s 17 third and the 95C of Bob Cigelman in fourth. John Sedlacek snagged the fourth position with 7 left and Halvorsen took the lead on the next lap. At the finish it was Halvorsen, Davis, Lenz and Sedlachek.
“I want to thank my dad for helping me out every weekend, Ronnie Schwartman for getting me a new car and all of my family and friends for coming out every weekend. Also, thanks to my Grandma and Grandpa for helping build Eagle Raceway so we can have fun here, and Roger for keeping it open and doing a super job with it” Elliot related. Elliot’s sponsors are JBH Ag and the Corner Cafe.
Trevor Grossenbacher’s 35AB was the first Budweiser 360 Sprint Car back to the flag in the final A Feature followed by John Klabunde’s 77, the 8B of Bobby Becker and the 44 of Doug Lovegrove. Becker got around Klabunde on lap two and grabbed second. On lap 6 Mike Boston used the high side of the track in the #88 sprinter to pass Lovegrove. On lap 7 Adam Gullion spun the 96KX to the inside of turn 2 and the yellow flag flew. 2 laps later Boston moved up to third and then to second the next time around with Brad Krutz’s 91 following him into third. Grossenbacher and Boston were both flying around the top in turns 1 & 2 while Krutz used the bottom of the track to eventually get around Boston. Both the 35AB and the 88 were running so close to the wall in the first 2 corners that they bounced off of it several times and both were sucked into it coming around turn 2 but suffered only minor damage. Krutz used Boston’s misstep to grab second with 5 laps left, but Boston managed to nip him at the flag stand as the checkered flag flew. The top 4 at the finish were Grossenbacher, Boston, Krutz and Becker.
“This was my first 360 sprint car win, and I’m dedicating it to my friend Anthony Buis who passed away last October; his initials are the AB in my car number” Trevor said. “I knew Boston was behind me, and I knew I couldn’t let what happened last week happen again. I hit the wall in two several times, and the one time I hit it really hard and got sucked into it and ran against it until the backstretch it actually tore out a piece of the wheel lock on my right rear. I really wasn’t sure the car was going to hold together, and couldn’t believe that my right rear tire didn’t end up going flat” he continued. He finished the interview by stating “I want to thank my family and all of those others who supported me. Without them, racing here and winning just wouldn’t be possible”. Trevor’s sponsors include Stop ‘N Shop, GMS Wings, J & M Technologies and Agee Automotive.
After all of the Features were completed, the fans and racers were treated to one of the finest fireworks displays seen at Eagle in many years.
Next week the World of Outlaws make their only appearance at Eagle Raceway this year as Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum presents the Eagle Nationals. The show will also feature the Monster IMCA Modifieds and the Budweiser 360 sprints. Front gate reserved and general admission pricing is $35 for those 13 and up with a pit pass upgrade available for an extra $5, and it’s just $10 for those 6-12. However, advanced tickets for those 14 and older can still be purchased at Lincoln Hy-Vee stores for only $30, and they include a pit pass. Children 5 and under will be admitted for free, but must have 1 paid adult with each of them.
The pit gate will open at 2 P.M. and the front gate will open at 4 P.M. with racing beginning at 7:30. Pit passes for the 360 sprint and modified teams will be $25 with a limit of 4 passes per car entered. All other pit passes will be $40.
The regular weekly racing season will resume on July 11th as Colby Ridge presents Christmas in July, featuring the Auto Trans Matic IMCA Sport Compact, Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks, Monster IMCA Modifieds and Budweiser 360 sprints. People bringing one toy donation for the Toys For Tots will receive $5 off of an adult front gate admission.All children in attendance will receive a gift from Santa Claus.

Editorial: A successful giveaway only happens once
I can't think of a time when I've seen this. But these times (I wouldn't say 'desperate') call for those measures. And by that, I mean things that haven't been seen before.
Now, let's get something clear. With all apologies to my 8-and-under readers (yeah), there's no such thing as Santa Claus at Christmas and he ain't there in the summer either. Despite all the terms used for similar promotions in the past: "Fan Appreciation," "Family Appreciation," "Salute to the Fan," and whatnot, this has nothing to do with giving back to the fan. Your contributions in the past are appreciated, but your continued help in the future is even more appreciated!
These events are a tool. One that has more in common with drug dealing - the first hit's free - than it does with charity.
The goal of course is to try to hook someone onto racing who have been held back by the admission price. Hopefully removing this hurdle gives the potential fan, or the part-time fan a reason to finally go.
It's advertising and marketing pure and simple. For the expense of the die-hard's front gate money, like buying an ad, they're spending that money on trying to bring in more people. As the saying goes, it doesn't cost anything to give away an empty seat. And the more empty the seats (again, I'm not saying it's 'empty'), the less the risk.
But, this isn't a bad thing! Applied judiciously this can be an effective marketing tool. Ideally, the increased fan count gives you that captive audience that is receptive to your other promotions. It can be very effective. And, if you hook them, you have a diehard happy to pay the $8-10 to get in each week. And contrary to some people's belief, you want the promoter to make money so say...rent, taxes, repairs, purse, payroll, upgrades, etc. get paid. What a concept.
As always, though there are those who ask, "why not do this every week?" Well, read above again and you'll see why not. You don't "make it up in beer and hotdogs." C'mon - do the math. Even if you made $2 per beer, it would take 5 beers/person to make that $10 lost at the front gate up, not to mention the extra labor to sell all that extra beer. Perhaps you brought a friend, but you still need to get to drinkin', remember you started $10 in the hole. And you better hope it isn't a cold night, or you need to roll out the Starbucks cart...and even a coffee-holic like me can't drink enough lattes to make up for that.
Another reason: you devalue the show. Why go on the $10 night when the $5 night is next week? Contrary to some fans' belief, the average attendee at any track that isn't pulling in just the friends and family of the racers is only there twice a month. If you went twice a month, do you go on the two weeks at $10 or one at 10 one at 5?
No track paying its own rent can afford that. Nor can they use backgate only revenue to bring you the big shows, with the big purses. And, as the back gate becomes the source of the money, who pays? The racers. Have you seen how many more races come with 'entry fees?' With that often comes more support classes paying less and less purse for the same amount of pit fee...sound familiar?
The REAL race fan will not whine for more of these discounts, they'll pack in as many people as they can to get them coming back out each week. The sport depends on it. Think of it as a stimulus package. But like the current attempt by the government, it comes at a price. The well can't be tapped too often.
Ideally, you would have to do this kind of promotion ONCE. Because once you have the demand why do it again? Why turn away the money? In the real world, you'd run it just enough to give those on the fence a kick off it and to your track, and nothing more.
Once the demand is there, you don't need more incentive.
Want an example of what demand for a good product does? What kind of discount do loyal customers get on the new iPhone? Zero. Because they'll buy it anyway.
And is Apple running off customers? The line outside the Apple store isn't the one going out.

Purses Raised for the Midwest Tri-Fecta at I-80 Speedway
In I-80 Speedway's quest to put on the biggest show possible for its fans the standard pay will be raised for all 3 classes racing July 2nd! We are also adding into the point fund for the 3 days of late model racing.
The 40 lap MLRA/NCRA race will pay $4000.00 to win
The ASCS sprint cars will receive $2000.00 to win
The IMCA type modified race will be $1000.00 to win
All classes will utilize a pill draw start and passing points to determine the feature line-up.
Archer Perdue Suzuki will be putting up $1,000.00 to the fan that can pick all 3 feature winners for that night. Ballots will be handed out to everyone entering the pits or grand stands and must be put in the ballot boxes by intermission. (exact details at the track that night!) Due to the large amount of ballots we will receive, the payoff will not be given the night of the race however we will contact the winner(s) of the $1,000.00 the following week.
Last but certainly not least, a special star will be competing in the late model class that night the 2008 NHRA Funny Car World Champion, Cruz Pedregon. Cruz will be competing in his own dirt late model, sponsored by Advanced Auto Parts and Patrick M. Pinney, this is the same car he uses to compete in the prelude to the dream.
With so much excitement packed in to one night we hope to see a packed house to join us for the start to an amazing 4th of July weekend!

Anderson, Smith, Cronin & Boston victorious at Eagle's Father's Day Tribute
EAGLE, NEB (June 21, 2009) - Although some fans gave in to the threat of
rain Saturday night, Mother Nature held off long enough for all events to be
completed during the Father's Day Tribute at "America's Home Track" Eagle
Raceway. The last feature finished at 9:55 and the liquid moonlight began
shortly after.
Dan Jackson's #98 held the lead as the Valentino's IMCA Hobby Stocks
completed the first lap of their A Feature. He was followed by Keith Dragoo
in the 77D, Don Hall Jr.'s 92 and the 9R of Charlie Bartels rounding out the
top 4. Nick Beckman came up to 4th on the second lap in the 22 and then
moved past Hall for third on lap 3. He advanced to 2nd two laps later. With
10 laps remaining Dragoo spun just short of the flag stand and as RJ Macku
came around he was not able to avoid Dragoo and made hard contact with him,
causing heavy damage to the front of both racecars. That moved Rob Brown's
#42 up to the fourth position. 2 laps after the restart Beckman and Jackson
made contact, with Beckman ending up in the infield and Jackson dropping
back. That allowed Brandon Johnson in the 45 and defending track champion
Kevin Anderson in the 22K to move to third and fourth respectively. There
were just 6 circuits remaining when the yellow flew again as Jackson spun
out in turn 4 and as Johnson came around, his engine expired. At that time
the order was Hall Jr., Brown, Anderson and the 21 of Derick Noonan. Hall
Jr. went extremely high in turns 3 & 4 with 4 to go, relinquishing the lead
to Anderson with Brown grabbing second. Hall recovered enough to retake
second the next time around. The finish showed Anderson winning, Hall Jr.
the runner-up, Brown in third and Noonan in fourth.
"That was an awesome track, with a good cushion" Anderson said. "I'm glad we
got the whole show in for the fans. I was thrilled to see how many folks
showed up with the threat of rain. We have such great fan support here, and
that shows just how great Eagle Raceway is" he stated. Kevin's sponsors are
Auto Connection, The Garage Sports Bar and Lincoln Lawn Guys.
The Monster IMCA Modifieds were up next. Roger "Chevy" Hadan's #4 led the
pack back to the flag stand followed by the 12X of George Haney, Doug
Deterding's 13 and the 8A of Dustin Anderson. Anderson lost his position to
the Z00 of Lacey Tuttle on lap 2, and Tuttle gave up the spot to Dylan
Smith's 95 2 laps later as Clint Homan's 27 and the 7 of Bob Ruisinger made
contact with Ruisinger spinning in turn 3 bringing out the caution flag.
Homan retired to the pits with a broken right A-frame. Tuttle also went
pitside with a flat left rear tire. With 7 laps complete Deterding moved to
third and then to 2nd, only to have Smith overtake him for the second
postion; Jordan Grabouski had come up to the fourth spot the same lap in his
yellow #30. Smith got past Haney the next lap and Grabouski moved ahead of
Deterding. Johnny Saathoff's 96J made contact with Deterding on lap 10 and
limped to the pits, but not before the yellow flag flew. Smith was still at
the point with Hadan, Grabouski and Deterding pressuring him. Dan Nelson
came up to fourth in the 94 on the restart lap, but gave up the spot to the
5S of Bob Zoubek 3 laps later. The caution lights came on again 2 laps later
as Nathan Landauer's 11N spun to the infield. Haney spun to the infield on
the restart after contact with the 16B of Randy Brown and again the yellow
came out. Zoubek moved up to second on the restart lap as Hadan fell to
fourth after going extremely high in turns 3 & 4. Hadan's troubles continued
as he spun into the infield on the final lap. At the checkers it was Smith,
Zoubek, Grabouski and Nelson.
Smith stated "The track was slick and smooth tonight, and I just avoided
everyone's problems and moved to the front as others screwed up. I knew that
Zoubek was coming and I am sure that with a couple more laps he would have
gotten me". He concluded the interview by saying "I need to thank Mike &
Lisa Goecke, Kyle Schamp, Damian, Grandma and Grandpa and of course Mom and
Dad". Dylan's sponsors include Jet Racing, Active Life Family Chiropractic,
Eckley Racing Engines and Cappy's Hot Spot Bar and Grill.
When the Auto Trans Matic IMCA Sport Compacts completed their first lap last
week's winner Brandon Thornton was in first in the 21T with Ole Olsen's 23
in second, Larry Cronin's 5 in third and fourth spot going to the 97 of John
Irvine. Cronin got past Olsen on lap 2 and then took the lead on lap 4 with
Irvine coming up to the third spot that same lap. Olsen returned the favor
by retaking third the next time around. Jason Danley's 14 took the fourth
spot with 8 to go. 2 laps later Ricky Harris' 3S spun and Danley was black
flagged during the yellow for excessive smoke. At that time it was Cronin,
Thornton, Olsen and Irvine. As they had been for some time, Olsen and Irvine
continued to battle for third and Irvine took the spot on with 6 to go, only
to give the position back to Olsen 2 laps later. As the white flag flew to
show 2 laps remaining Garret Rech took fourth from Thornton. The next lap
the yellow flag was displayed as Harris came to a halt. The running order
remained unchanged during the green/white/checkered finish as Cronin won,
Thornton was in second Olsen in third and Rech in fourth.
"It's kind of funny" Cronin said. "I won last year, and then got my first
win of the season just now and both times it was a couple of weeks after I
rolled. The one this year really scared me though. It's one thing to just
roll over, but when you're flipping in the air..THAT'S scary". He concluded
by stating "I need to thank so many people; my sponsors are CJ's Paint Ball,
Cheryl Dittmer, Scott's Auto Detailing, Troy's Automotive, W & J Crafts and
Lincoln Laminating. Of course there is my mother-in-law Cheryl, Tracy Harr
for doing my video taping, my wife and kids, Thomas, Ricky, Tommie and
Jason. Last of all, I want to thank all of the fans".
The final A Feature was for the Budweiser 360 Sprints. The 35AB of Trevor
Grossenbacher led the first lap, followed by Nick Bryan's 6, the 44 of Doug
Lovegrove and Tadd Holliman in the 23R. Lovegrove got around Bryan on the
fourth circuit. Lap 6 saw the 51X of Gary Paulson spin out, causing the
yellow flag to be shown. Jeff Griffis got past Holliman on the restart only
to be repassed by Holliman the next time around. Holliman would be set back
though when the yellow came out as Bryan spun coming out of turn 4. Mike
Boston took advantage of the restart to pass Holliman and then overtook
Griffis the next time around with Holliman following him into fourth. Boston
got past Lovegrove on lap 7 as the 99C of Nick Clifford moved to fourth. The
caution lights came on again on lap 10 as Bobby Becker's 8B spun in turn 4.
Boston used a textbook slide job in turns 1 & 2 on the restart to snag the
lead. The best battle of the evening was for fourth though as Nick Clifford
ran the cushion and Holliman hugged the inside berm and they traded the
position all the way to the end. A caution came out shortly after that when
Terry Holliman's 23 came to a halt after spinning high in turn 4 and Mike
Chadd spun low in the same corner in the #4. The battle for fourth went to
Holliman with 7 circuits remaining, only to lose the position yet again to a
caution when Josh Riggins' 4J spun coming out of turn 4. It was an exciting
last few laps as Boston, Grossenbacher and Clifford were running the ragged
edge with the cushion nearly to the wall and Lovegrove and Holliman using
the bottom groove. As the race ended it was Boston, Grossenbacher, Lovegrove
and Clifford.
"It was a really good weekend for us, because we've been having trouble the
last few weeks. The worst was struggling with fueling problems, but I hope
we may have them solved now. This win belongs to my crew. Thanks to all of
their work during the week we can win on the weekend" Mike said. Boston's

Next week's event is Freedom Fest, sponsored by Jack Daniels. Besides great
racing by the Budweiser 360 sprints, Auto Trans Matic IMCA Sport Compacts,
Monster IMCA Modifieds and Valentino's IMCA Hobby Stocks there will be a
fireworks extravaganza following the racing. All military, police and
fire/rescue personnel in uniform or with a current government issued ID will
receive free front gate admission. The Big Car Racing Association will have
a display and put on an exhibition at intermission. Front gate opens at 5:30
P.M. and the pit gates open at 4.
The Eagle Nationals sponsored by Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum and featuring the
only visit this year by the World of Outlaws Sprints will be held on the 4th
of July. Supporting the 410 sprints will be the Budweiser 360 sprint cars
and the Monster IMCA modifieds. Advanced discount general admission tickets
with a pit pass combo are available at HyVee grocery stores for only 30
dollars and also either at the track or by contacting the Eagle office at
402-238-2595. Pit pass combo upgrades are available for those 14 and up for
an additional $5. Day of event general admission will be $35 for those 13
and up and $10 for those 6-12 years old. Children 5 and under will be
admitted free; limit 1 with an adult admission.

Purses Raised for the Midwest Tri-Fecta at I-80 Speedway
In I-80 Speedway's quest to put on the biggest show possible for its fans
the standard pay will be raised for all 3 classes racing July 2nd! We are
also adding into the point fund for the 3 days of late model racing.
The 40 lap MLRA/NCRA race will pay $4000.00 to win
The ASCS sprint cars will receive $2000.00 to win
The IMCA type modified race will be $1000.00 to win
All classes will utilize a pill draw start and passing points to determine
the feature line-up.
Archer Perdue Suzuki will be putting up $1,000.00 to the fan that can pick
all 3 feature winners for that night. Ballots will be handed out to everyone
entering the pits or grand stands and must be put in the ballot boxes by
intermission. (exact details at the track that night!) Due to the large
amount of ballots we will receive, the payoff will not be given the night of
the race however we will contact the winner(s) of the $1,000.00 the
following week.
Last but certainly not least, a special star will be competing in the late
model class that night the 2008 NHRA Funny Car World Champion, Cruz
Pedregon. Cruz will be competing in his own dirt late model, sponsored by
Advanced Auto Parts and Patrick M. Pinney, this is the same car he uses to
compete in the prelude to the dream.
With so much excitement packed in to one night we hope to see a packed house
to join us for the start to an amazing 4th of July weekend!

Series Midwest Region gets back into the swing of things by taking to the
lightning-fast high banks of U.S. 36 Raceway in Cameron, MO, for Friday
night's annual Budweiser Sprint Car Shootout.
Grain Valley, Missouri's Brian Brown holds the slimmest of leads in the
points chase as the series takes to a track that has featured five different
ASCS Midwest winners in as many events.
Defending ASCS Midwest champion Jack Dover, a Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car
Series Rookie of the Year contender, topped last year's Midwest event at
U.S. 36 Raceway with other past series winners at the track including Jesse
Hockett, Chris Morgan, Toby Chapman and Johnny Anderson.
Brown, who finished third in last year's ASCS Midwest event at U.S. 36 and
second in 2005, carries just a two-point lead over Lincoln, Nebraska's Don
Droud, Jr., into the event, with Sedalia, Missouri's Jonathan Cornell
another ten points back in third.
Lincoln's Mike Chadd enters Friday's action ranked fourth, with Aurora,
Nebraska's Ryan Roberts rounding out the current top five. The balance of
the current top ten includes Jason Danley, Chad Humston, Lee Grosz, Mike
Boston and Ryan Anderson.
The ASCS Midwest Region has featured four different winners in as many 2009
main events including Billy Alley, Cornell, Humston and Shane Stewart.
The ASCS Midwest Regional forces will take on the Winged Outlaw Warriors in
Friday night's Budweiser Sprint Car Shootout.
Friday's racing action atop the high-banked, 3/8-mile U.S. 36 Raceway clay
oval is set to fire off at 8:00 p.m.
U.S. 36 Raceway is located 50 miles northeast of Kansas City on I-35 to Exit
54, then 6.3 miles west on U.S. 36, then 0.1 mile north on SR 33. For more

The ASCS Midwest Region is slated for 13 nights of competition at a half
dozen tracks throughout Nebraska and the surrounding areas of Missouri and
South Dakota.
The American Sprint Car Series, in its 18th year of sanctioning Sprint Car
racing events, brings the best of Sprint Car racing to nearly 100 different
tracks throughout 25 states and Canada in 2009. Anchored by the Lucas Oil
ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters, ASCS also consists of
a dozen different Regions throughout the nation.

I-80: Berck a Perfect 5-for-5 In The SLMR Series

Greenwood, NE (June 14, 2009) - The SLMR Racing Series for Late Models is
only 5 races into the season and Kyle Berck from Marquette, Nebraska is
perfect at 5 for 5, with his late win coming Sunday night at I-80 Speedway.
Jerry Warner and Justin Zeitner battled for the early lead in the feature
with Zeitner taking control out of turn 2 ob the opening lap. Warner hung
with him until lap 6 when Mike Wiarda took over 2nd place. Berck, who
started this feature in the 5th position was steadily moving forward and
grabbed 2nd on lap 12. On lap 14 Berck passed Zeitner(the son of Lightning
Leon) for the lead and never looked back Zeitner held off Wiarda for 2nd and
Leon Zeitner finished 4th ahead of his nephew Corey Zeitner. The next SLMR
Series race is at Butler County Speedway in Rising City, Nebraska on Friday
June 19th. They will be back at I-80 on Sunday, July 19th.
In the NASCAR Late Model feature two-time defending champion Todd Hipnar
started on the pole and took command of this race at the drop of the green
flag. But several restarts were costly to Hipnar as Matt Buller managed to
catch and pass Hipnar with on lap 13. Point leader Billy Leighton Jr. ran
into some bad luck early on as he and Brad Soll got together going into turn
3 with Leighton's car hitting the wall. His pit crew did a super job of
gettung him back on the track with some front end damage. But late in the
race he blew the radiator and was done for the night. Les Siebert finished
2nd ahead of Billy Koons Jr., Clint Benson and Hipnar.
The Pro-Am feature after one aborted start saw Casey Cleveland take the
early lead. But Jeff Joldersma and Scotty Hartman were on the move from
there 6th row start. Joldersma took the lead on lap 5 while Hartman moved
into 3rd. Hartman running the high groove in the corners was able to take
the lead from Joldersma on lap 11. But Joldersma kept Hartman in his sights
but could net retake the lead. At the finish it was Hartman with his 2nd
straight feature win ahead of Joldersma, Ray Dessel, Rick Negrete and Don
Mohr.
The Crate Late Model feature belonged to Mike Morton Jr, who picked up his
2nd straight feature win. Steven Saunders and Tyler Zander finished 2nd and
3rd.
Dave Christensen led the 1st 4 laps of the IMCA Sports Compact feature
before Alex Fink passed him on lap 5. This race boiled down to a battle of
the Fink Brothers, Alex and Pete Jr. Pete would pass Alex on the last lap
coming out of turn 4 for the victory. Rounding out the top 5 were
Christensen, Taylor Griffin and Justin Soule.
Next Sunday will be I-80's Fathers Day special featuring the NASCAR Late
Models, the Pro-Ams, the IMCA Modifieds, SportMods and Sport Compacts.

Eagle: Hanson, Smith, Thornton and Dover take home wins

Saturday night was “Fan with a can” night at “America’s Home Track” Eagle Raceway, and the track was lightning quick thanks to the diligence of Eagle’s track prep crew following yesterday’s rains. As a testament to that Trevor Grossenbacher broke the track record set just 1 week before by Tige JensEn. Grossenbacher turned a lap on the 1/3-mile high banks in 11.815 seconds in the first Budweiser 360 sprint heat.
Mike Simpson was unable to back up his win the previous evening at Beatrice as his night ended when his #63 IMCA Sport Compact rolled in turn 2 during his B Feature.
The first A Feature saw the Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks competing. Eric Hanson was at the point in his #33 at the end of the first lap followed by the 23 of Mark McKinney, Josh Kennell’s 71K and RJ Macku’s 1R. The first of 4 yellow flags flew on lap 2 when the 6B of Travis Burger stopped on the entrance road to the pits. Kennell was sent to the rear of the field for having spun McKinney to the infield that lap. Hanson was still in first with Macku in second, Joe Ryan’s 32 in third and the 94 of Mike Hansen in fourth. On lap 6 Dan Jackson’s 98 slowed to stop in turn 1 and the yellow flag was displayed, but not before Kevin Anderson moved up to the fourth spot in his #22K. Anderson overtook Ryan on the restart. There was another yellow as a car stopped sideways in turn 2 on lap 9. With 6 laps left Jesse Vanlaningham came up to fourth in his #72. The next lap the 12 of Dan Noonan brought out the last yellow of the race when his #12 stopped on the entrance road to the pits. Despite heated battles for the top four positions, they remained unchanged to the finish. Hanson managed to hold the lead to the checkers with Macku, Anderson and Vanlaningham close behind. Hanson had to be taken to the tech area as he lost a tire on the cool-down lap.
Hanson could not be located for an interview.
The Monster IMCA Modifieds were next on the track. Dustin Anderson’s 8A was first back to the flag stand with the S56 of Scott Bivens, Lance Borgman’s 76 and Dan Nelson in the 94 in hot pursuit. Lap 3 saw Bivens snare the lead and Nelson move up to third. The next circuit Borgman overtook Nelson, only to relinquish the spot back to Nelson on lap 6. Bob Zoubek also passed Borgman that lap to grab fourth. Dylan Smith shot past both Borgman and Zoubek on lap 7, making the running order Bivens, Anderson, Smith and Nelson. The race’s first caution happened on lap 9 as the 07 of Tony Orender spun in turns 1 & 2. Smith used the restart to grab second and then went past Bivens for the lead the next time around. Zoubek moved up to third on the next lap and Jordan Grabouski advanced to fourth the lap after. Doug Deterding’s 13 lost a wheel & tire on the front stretch with 6 to go and the yellow flag was out again. Zoubek and Grabouski both moved up a spot on the restart. Nelson got back to fourth with 5 laps left. The yellow came out again with 3 to go as the 16B of Randy Brown, Mike Boston in the 30B and Justin Wulf’s 86 spun coming out of turn #4. Grabouski moved around Zoubek on the restart lap and the top 4 remained unchanged to the checkers.
“I just missed all the spins and wrecks and moved up to the front slowly. I managed to hold on for the win even though my right upper A-arm broke with just a few laps left. Thanks for this win go to Grandpa and Grandma, Mom and Dad, my car owners Mike & Lisa Goecke, Damian & Joni and all of my sponsors” Dylan said. Dylan concluded the interview by relating “Roger and the crew gave us another good, fast, racy track tonight”. Dylan’s sponsors include Jet Racing, Active Life Family Chiropractic, Marquardt Plumbing, Cappy’s Hot Spot Bar and Grill, KRE Enterprises and Eckley Racing Engines.
The Auto Trans Matic IMCA Sport Compacts took to the track next. John Irvine’s 97 held the lead on the first lap, Jeff Davis’ 32 was in second and Brandon Thornton’s 21T and the 18K of Barry Kinnersley rounded out the top 4. Thornton, Kinnersley and Matt Moyer’s 29 all passed Davis on lap 2, moving up to 2nd through 4th. Bob Cigelman’s 95C stopped in turn 2 on the 3rd lap for the first caution. Elliot Halvorsen’s 22 spun in turn 2 with 12 laps left. After the laps reverted it took Thornton just 2 laps to snare the point as Jeremy Noonan flew up to fourth in the 33. 2 laps later Garrett Rech’s #55 hit the turn 1 wall and the yellow came out again. Noonan passed Kinnersley for third with 10 to go and Kinnersley fell from the top 4 two laps later when Joey Danley advanced his #14 to fourth. With 5 to go Noonan got around Irvine for second and Danley also passed Irvine 2 laps later. At the finish it was Thornton, Noonan, Danley and Irvine. Noonan was disqualified after the IMCA techs found that he did not have 4 matching wheels during the post-race inspection. The DQ moved Kinnersley up to fourth.
“I need to thank my wife and kids first of all. My son can’t think of much besides that big check. It’s nice to get things together after flipping early in the year and then missing the feature the last 2 weeks” Brandon related. “Also, I want to thank Roger and the crew for giving us a great track to race on tonight” he continued. When asked about sponsors Brandon stated “I don’t have any, but in case there’s anyone out there looking to sponsor a car we’d be thrilled to have them”.
The A Main for the Budweiser 360 Sprints finished out the evening’s festivities. The racing was brought to a quick halt shortly after the green when the red flag flew after Bobby Becker’s 8B got together with the 3 of Jeff Griffis coming to the flag stand, resulting in Griffis flipping along the front stretch wall. Becker’s car was able to be pushed to his pit, but Griffis’ racer was damaged too severely to continue. Gage Dorr in the 17, Trevor Grossenbacher’s 35, Ken Klabunde’s 28 and the 14G of Gene Acklund held the top 4 spots. The action was again halted on the restarted lap 2 when Jay Jordan spun the 19J to the infield in turn 2. Grossenbacher began his charge when he passed Dorr on the restart and set sail, moving to nearly a straightaway lead. Lap 6 saw Dan Wayman’s #5 get high going into turn 1 and hit the wall hard, resulting in a rollover. Grossenbacher came around as Wayman’s sprinter came to a stop on it’s wheels, but was unable to stop before hitting Wayman. The new track record holder’s sprinter was damaged too severely to be repaired and he was through for the evening. That put Dorr back in the lead with Klabunde second, Acklund third and the 23R of Tadd Holliman in fourth. Jack Dover had come up from his 6th row starting position to grab fourth from Holliman with 12 to go. Dover advanced to third the next lap and then to 2nd the next time around. It took Dover only 2 more laps to grab the lead from Dorr, a lead which he would not relinquish to the end of the race. The final finish was Dover, Klabunde, the 88 of Mike Boston who had to come through the B and Dorr.
“Knoxville had a lot of rain yesterday, so we made Eagle our back-up plan in case they rained out and they did. My beautiful mother’s birthday is tomorrow, and all she wanted for a present was to see me win tonight. I guess I didn’t have much choice but to give her what she wanted” Jack said. He concluded by stating “I owe this win to my crew, Alex Johnson and Greg McCormick. And I need to thank my mom and dad again, for making all of this possible”. Jack’s sponsors include Trail Performance, Thorpe’s Body Shop, Home Pride, ATV Motorsports, Eckley Racing Engines and Eagle Chassis.
A Father’s Day Tribute will be held next Saturday night at Eagle with a present to the first 300 fathers through the front gate. There will also be spectator drags at intermission. Pits open at 4:00 with the front gate swinging open at 5:30 and racing at 7:00. The Auto Trans Matic IMCA Sport Compacts, Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks and Budweiser 360 sprints will be racing.

Eagle Kid's Night 2009
It's that time of year, and we are excited to get this season's event kicked
off! We have begun our annual 2009 Kid's Night mission! This year's event
will be held at Eagle Raceway on Saturday, July 25, 2009.
Once again, Roger Hadan has kindly challenged ALL DRIVERS for every two
bikes they buy, Roger will buy one. The cost per bike is $42.80 and the
deadline for purchasing is July 17. Special arrangements can be made if
needed.

Book Review: Big Car Thunder, Vol II by Bob Mays
I’m choosing to start with Vol. II first. Reason being, it’s brand new (the first volume was released four years ago), and this book stands quite well on its own.
The book covers the “Big Car” era (Sprints as opposed to the supermodifieds that ruled the bullrings of the time) from 1963 to 1982, most of the volume covering the early portion of the time - when the form over function roll bars where lower than the driver’s crew cuts, IMCA sanctioned sprints and briefly midgets (!) and big state-fair half mile tracks hosted mega-shows with crowds in the tens of thousands, crowds larger for one race than many tracks today see in a year!
What’s inside: over 500 photos from tracks throughout the Midwest featuring racers like Joe Saldana, Jerry Richert, Thad Dosher, Gordon Woolley, Lloyd Beckman, Jan Opperman, and on and on. If they raced then, they’re there.
You’ll get great writing about the events, from the heydays of the BCRA and IMCA, to the eventual demise of the two groups as well as the other players such as the Mississippi Valley CC and the NSCA (that’s Natl. Speedways Contest Association to those weaned on sprints after 1985). Mays gives a recount painstakingly researched from archives, libraries, historical societies, all with the touch of a skilled writer and a passionate fan.
When Bob handed me the books, he asked for an “honest review.” Those who know me know I’m never at a loss when it comes to critique, so why will this review will sound like an ad?
Because it’s just that good. I don’t have a fault. Of late, I’ve become a jaded fan. But this book made me giddy, made me a fan again.
If you’ve seen any of Mays’ books, the first feeling that comes to my mind when picking it up is one of reverence. These books are works of art, texts bordering on sacred to the race fan. This is not the paperback, flimsy overviews of racing history stuffed between endless ghost-written NASCAR biographies in the local big-box bookstore. It’s far above that. The binding, paper, printing…all ooze quality and is the only appropriate presentation worthy of the painstaking research put into this 300+ page tome. You’re not holding a book, you’re holding history.
When I cracked open the book, my ADHD-riddled mind couldn’t figure where to start: the lavish amount of photos or the text written in the manner Mays is known for – one of meticulous detail livened by his love of the sport.
It doesn’t matter. The captions accompanying each photo are as informative as the anecdotes and accounts preceding them in the text. Black and white photos lend to the nostalgia while multiple color galleries give life to many of the characters recounted in the book.
And…I would pick up this book and tell you to start at any page…find the pictures of cars you recognize and start there. Don’t worry, you’ll go back to the beginning and read through like a normal book – you’ll have to, you’ll WANT to.
But here’s what happened to me and why I think your first pass through the book can begin anywhere. My happenstance start toward the back drew me into the entire world Mays recounts. Seeing a photo of Sonny Smyser’s 1982 NSCA victory at Eagle grabbed me for one reason – I WAS THERE! And, I wanted to go back. If you are young or new to the sport, don’t worry – you’ll make the connection quickly as many of the names are still active in the sport today.
That’s the magic of this book above all other historical accounts I’ve read: the photos, the text, it grabs you emotionally. Pick that point and learn the previous history and recount the time after. The beauty of this book (and Volume 1) is that through Mays’ work, many of us who weren’t around for this, or only for a small part, as in my case, it gives a connection to history, it gives an understanding to the passion of the race fan, the continuum that links all of the dirt-track racing culture together.
The sport has changed, but what Mays does is not lock us into the sentimental, but instead takes us through the evolution of the sport, and he recognizes and explains the reasons behind the evolution. To those who don’t get the passion of the sprint car fan, read this and you’ll understand.
ANYONE, whether you are a stock car, NASCAR, road-racer or any race fan needs to read this book, needs to buy this book and re-read it. Time machines don’t exist, but this is the closest I’ve ever been to experiencing the screaming Offy’s, knobby tires and the electricity of days gone by.

College student makes sure she has time for IMCA racing
Brad Tuttle talks about his daughter Lacey as always being a "girly girl"
who, when she was real young, was particularly fond of wearing dresses.

IMCA Mach-1 Sport Compacts new at US 30 Speedway
part of Thursday night programs at US 30 Speedway.
Mach-1 Sport Compacts will run weekly at the 1/3-mile Columbus clay oval
through Aug. 20. The class had previously been called the hornets, with
rules extremely similar to the Sport Compacts.
"Our rules were so close that almost all the cars were already IMCA legal,"
promoter Sam Ganskow said. "The only thing a couple drivers had to add was
one bar in the roll cage."
Designed as an entry-level class, Sport Compacts are front wheel drive,
compact cars powered by three or four cylinder engines. First sanctioned in
2006, the division is on weekly cards at 16 tracks at five states.
Ganskow is optimistic that the local car count will go up, bolstered by
regulars from Butler County Motorplex or Beatrice Speedway on Fridays, Eagle
Raceways on Saturdays and I-80 Speedway on Sundays.
"If they're chasing national points, we're the only game on Thursday night,"
she said. "We could get some drivers from Iowa, too."
IMCA Modifieds have run at US 30 since 1994.
"We've enjoyed a long association with US 30 and the Sport Compacts are a
great addition to a first-class facility," IMCA Vice President of Operations
Brett Root said. "I expect to see even more tracks in our ButlerBuilt
Central Region add the class next season."

7 Features Saw 6 Winners At I-80 Speedway Sunday Night
(Greenwood, Ne., 05/31/09) There was a lot of action at I-80 Speedway on
Sunday night as 7 features were run with 6 different drivers.
The IMCA Sports Compacts started the night with a makeup feature from last
week. And that feature saw Justin Soule take the checkers over a fast
closing Pete Fink Jr. Fink is the current point leader and started back in
the field. With 2 laps left he passed Jamie Spanel for 2nd but ran out of
laps trying to reel in Soule.
In the 2nd feature Dave Christensen took the early lead and held it til lap
3 when Austin Kurtzer passed him. Kurtzer held the lead until lap 8 when he
hit the front stretch wall and Soule inherited the lead and held on for his
2nd win of the evening. Kennin Colestock finished 2nd.
In the 3rd feature Will McConnell took the early lead with Steven Neiderhaus
in 2nd. Neiderhaus was trying to pass McConnell on lap 3, when he lost
control out of turn 2 hitting the infield guard rail and flipping his car.
Neiderhaus was ok but was done for the night. Jamie Spanel inherited the
lead at this point, lost it on lap 7 to Ole Olsen and then regained it with
one lap left.
The Pro-am A-Feature saw Scotty Hartman take the lead from the pole position
and then wired the field for the win. There was quite a battle for 2nd thru
4th for the rest of the race, with Rick Negrete finally settling into 2nd.
But Jeff Joldersma was a man on the move after starting 20th. In the end he
won a stirring battle from Negrete to finish 2nd. Negrete finished 3rd ahead
of Greg Cooper and Terry Cleveland.
The IMCA Sports Mod feature saw Josh Blumer and Dustin Thayer battling for
the early lead. By lap 2 Blumer had the lead which he held thru lap 7 when
Robert Tippery took over. Tippery held off Kyle Nordquist for the win with
Blumer taking 3rd ahead of Joe Feyen and Denny Berghahn Jr.
The Crate Late Models lost 2 of seven cars at the start of the race as
Michael Powell and Steven Saunders got together in turn 1. On the restart
Joe Simpson took the early lead and held it til lap 2 when Mike Morton Jr.
passed for the lead. From that point on it was all Morton as he outdistanced
Tyler Zander, Simpson and Shevi Collins.
The NASCAR Late Models closed out the evening with Brad Soll battling wily
veteran Ron Tilley for the lead. The 2 traded the lead until lap 7 when Soll
took command and then held off another veteran Les Siebert for the win, his
1st of the year. Billy Leighton came on strong to finish 3rd ahead of Clint
Benson and Mike Wallace.
