NASCAR Stars to Battle O’Reilly USMTS Modifieds at Iowa State Fair Speedway June 2
DES MOINES, Iowa (May 29) - When the United States Modified Touring Series invades the Iowa State Fair Speedway on Monday, June 2, the rugged road warriors will have some added incentive to find victory lane, and fans will have a chance to see two of the biggest names in stock car racing take on the biggest names in modified racing.
NASCAR stars Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace will strap on the helmets and stand on the gas as they compete with the O’Reilly USMTS National Tour on the Des Moines half-mile dirt oval for NASCAR Night presented by Karl Chevrolet. While they are best known for circling America's superspeedways with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, both are prolific dirt track racers with a pedigree.
They won't be looking for show up points, they'll be looking to win.
Ken Schrader: It was on the dirt tracks where Schrader's career began. He started out driving mostly open-wheel cars and won in every division he raced, including two USAC championships -- 1982 Silver Crown and '83 Sprint Car. Schrader is a veteran second-generation racer, and has 722 career starts in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Schrader's victory in the 1991 Budweiser 500 at Dover International Speedway was his last to date. He appears as a television analyst on Inside Sprint Cup on the SPEED Channel, and is also the owner of Ken Schrader Racing, which fields entries for himself in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and the Whelen All-American Series for Chris Bristol. Schrader is also the owner of I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Mo.
Kenny Wallace: Wallace currently drives part-time in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. He also works as an on-air personality for SPEED Channel on shows such as NASCAR RaceDay and NASCAR Victory Lane. He was also featured on the show NASCAR Drivers: 360 on FX. He has two brothers who are also current or former NASCAR drivers: Rusty Wallace and Mike Wallace. As a child, Wallace’s boisterous behavior earned him the nickname “Herman,” after a mischievous cartoon character named Herman the German. Last year, Wallace was voted in by fans to compete in the NASCAR Nextel All-Star Challenge at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

The Rain Date - My Take
So, what do you do with darn near no racing this season? Gas prices and a rough economy already made the 2008 season a challenge before the first green flag, but the weather has thrown promoters a change-up that NY Mets pitcher Johan Santana would be proud of.
With that in mind – there’s been talk of rescheduling shows along with possible and already scheduled rain dates. Most people realize that rain dates are usually bummers crowd wise and rarely do they meet the original show’s expectations on any level. In some cases they’re necessary – a large show like the World of Outlaws demands ticket holders get to see the show. Maybe it’s making up events or filling a sanction’s minimum requirements. Again, not much is expected and usually not much is received. That’s why I’ve been against rain dates for weekly shows.
But maybe there’s a way to make it work. But it involves having a plan, communicating that plan, and executing it through.
First, I don’t think any rain date should take place within a week after the rainout. In this day of planning for gas expenses, time off, fan considerations, etc. slamming a rain date the day after the show isn’t helping, especially teams that have to travel or fans that made other plans for the next day. Unless other scheduling considerations (end of season, etc.) are in play, even a pre-scheduled rain date of the day after the race is asking a lot. Move the day to some time when you can advertise it, and you need to advertise hard – it could pay off in the end. And, move it to a day when the HOBBY racers (that is 99% of your weekly show) can get some lead time with their employers if needed.
Second, get the rain date established quickly. We’ve seen the trend to making early rainout calls because of fans and team’s driving distance, track safety, etc. I’d like to see promoters start setting a rain date when they make the original schedule. Even though trying to work a track for hours was out of concern for people who already made the trip (and rightfully so), knowing there was a plan in advance, maybe the pain of a rainout would’ve been easier to deal with.
Third, if you’re going to fill with a mid-week date for weekly shows, get the word out now, and give it at least a week to soak it in. Get the word out to your fans, on the night they’re there, not running to the cars during a downpour. Do it on a nice night. Your announcers/advertising/web sites need to get that ingrained into the heads of fans, when they’re receptive – usually at the track. “Hey fans…we want to get in all the racing we can, so from now until the end of the season, any show rained out will be made up the following _____!”
Fourth, and most important: if you’re going to run mid-week GET THE SHOW STARTED ON TIME AND FINISHED QUICKLY! This isn’t the time to run your big special intermission brouhaha. This isn’t the night to get started late. By mid season, you can get away with 1-2 hot laps per session, not 5. You can trim things down; you can put on HARD TIME LIMITS on the show – my experience at Eagle showed that if racers know in advance the clock’s on them, they’re a lot more understanding. There will always be bitchers, but the majority of your die-hards will understand, and thank you.
I’m not saying that this is the key to rainout success, and a guarantee to make money, but it is the culmination of my experience dealing with rainouts, and discussion with fans and race teams over the years about the subject and if it needs to be done, it can be done without the promoter getting blasted in the wallet.

Greenwood, NE (May 21, 2008) - Some of the areas top outlaw late model
drivers will hit the dirt at I-80 Speedway for the 7th Annual Alphabet Soup
Race presented by Your Area Dodge Dealers on Sunday, May 25 in a 50
lap-$5,000 to win Late Model main event. The 50 lap race will showcase
drivers from four traveling late model series: World Dirt Racing League
(WDRL), Midwest Late Model Racing Association (MLRA), National Championship
Racing Association (NCRA), Topless Outlaw Racing Association (TORA) and the
Spec Late Model Racing Series (SLMR). Race fans will get a chance to win
NASCAR Sprint Cup Garage Passes from Dodge for the September 28 race at
Kansas Speedway.
Joining these four top late model series as support divisions for the annual
Memorial Day race will be the IMCA Great Clips Modifieds, IMCA Crate Models
and Ty's Outdoor Power Equipment Hobby Stocks.
"We expect the best of the best to be here on that Sunday with the return of
four of the top sanctioning bodies in late model racing," said track
promoter Ed Kosiski. "The WDRL, MLRA, NCRA and TORA are all well known for
their exciting racing action and we expect to see a great show with them all
combined in one big race."
Last year's exciting finish for the late model race saw Al Purkey pass
Jeremy Payne on the bottom coming out of turn four to take the checkered
flag by a car length. Race fans also saw Terry Phillips and Kelly Boen
tangle on the track, with Boen being spun out by Phillips causing him to be
hit by another driver, and knocking him out of the race. As the race was red
flagged, Boen leaped from his car and ran down the track after Phillips.
Track officials held back Boen, as Phillips drove to the flag stand where he
was thrown out of the race. Boen then made his way to the front straightaway
where he received cheers from the entire grandstands.
Race fans can pick up $5 off adult grandstand admission coupons from their
Area Dodge Dealers. Those Dealerships with coupons are:
Fans can enter the NASCAR Sprint Cup Garage Pass giveaway from Dodge with
the entry form printed on the back of the coupon. Fans must be 19 years of
age to enter. The Dodge coupons also include a $5 off admission to Adams
County Speedway in Corning, IA for Saturday, May 24.
Racing on Sunday starts at 5:55 p.m., with hot laps at 5:30 p.m. Pit Gates

The ASCS Midwest region opener scheduled for tonight, Friday May 23rd, at
Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, NE has been rained out.
Track owner Delmar Freisen said the track received over 1.5 inches of rain
overnight and as of 8:30 this morning is getting hit with heavy
thunderstorms making it impossible to expect any racing tonight.
A decision whether to reschedule this event will come at a later date.
The ASCS Midwest opener will now take place at Knoxville Raceway on Friday
June 20th when the ASCS Midwest region takes on the ASCoT National series at
the famed half mile oval in Knoxville, Iowa

USMTS Calls On Race Fans to Help Raise Money For Abused Children

Childhelp as the Official Charity of the USMTS and a principle recipient for
its fundraising efforts.

Variety of Letters Fill Up Seventh Annual Alphabet Soup Race

Greenwood, NE (May 21, 2008) - Some of the areas top outlaw late model
drivers will hit the dirt at I-80 Speedway for the 7th Annual Alphabet Soup
Race presented by Your Area Dodge Dealers on Sunday, May 25 in a 50
lap-$5,000 to win Late Model main event. The 50 lap race will showcase
drivers from four traveling late model series: World Dirt Racing League
(WDRL), Midwest Late Model Racing Association (MLRA), National Championship
Racing Association (NCRA), Topless Outlaw Racing Association (TORA) and the
Spec Late Model Racing Series (SLMR). Race fans will get a chance to win
NASCAR Sprint Cup Garage Passes from Dodge for the September 28 race at
Kansas Speedway.
Joining these four top late model series as support divisions for the annual
Memorial Day race will be the IMCA Great Clips Modifieds, IMCA Crate Models
and Ty's Outdoor Power Equipment Hobby Stocks.
"We expect the best of the best to be here on that Sunday with the return of
four of the top sanctioning bodies in late model racing," said track
promoter Ed Kosiski. "The WDRL, MLRA, NCRA and TORA are all well known for
their exciting racing action and we expect to see a great show with them all
combined in one big race."
Last year's exciting finish for the late model race saw Al Purkey pass
Jeremy Payne on the bottom coming out of turn four to take the checkered
flag by a car length. Race fans also saw Terry Phillips and Kelly Boen
tangle on the track, with Boen being spun out by Phillips causing him to be
hit by another driver, and knocking him out of the race. As the race was red
flagged, Boen leaped from his car and ran down the track after Phillips.
Track officials held back Boen, as Phillips drove to the flag stand where he
was thrown out of the race. Boen then made his way to the front straightaway
where he received cheers from the entire grandstands.
Race fans can pick up $5 off adult grandstand admission coupons from their
Area Dodge Dealers. A list is available at www.neracewaypark.com
Fans can enter the NASCAR Sprint Cup Garage Pass giveaway from Dodge with
the entry form printed on the back of the coupon. Fans must be 19 years of
age to enter. The Dodge coupons also include a $5 off admission to Adams
County Speedway in Corning, IA for Saturday, May 24.
Racing on Sunday starts at 5:55 p.m., with hot laps at 5:30 p.m. Pit Gates
open at 2:30 p.m. and front gate opens at 4:00 p.m. Ticket prices are $20
for adults, $12 for juniors 13-18 with ID, $2 for kids 5-12 and kids under 5
are free.
The following week is the "Out of School Concert and Car Show" presented by
Coca Cola, with NASCAR Whelen All American Series and IMCA Speedway Motors
Weekly Racing action.

Here's photos from this weekend's action at Eagle.
I'm going to do things very differently this year.
One, I've gone very very selective and adopted a "coverage" approach (like photos in the newspaper) as opposed to putting every guy turning left up there. Only the shots I like best will be put up. These will be where the lighting/subject worked, telling a story, etc.
Because of this I've gone to a strict media-only photo policy. No photos are for sale. I grew tired of the BS. The cut-throat, cut-rate market doesn't pay for that kind of hassle with limited distribution. By announcing this and making it public, no photographer can say I'm competing with them and I'm free to do what I want.
On the plus side, it allows me to pick what I like, edit, manipulate and do the best I can for each picture and show what I like in its best light. I may put up some larger images later in the year - kind of a "best of" gallery.
Two, I'm using a service designed for commercial clients called Photoshelter - it's something I'm going to be using for other non-racing photographic ventures down the road and for the intended media-only distribution. But this allows me to watermark, upload quickly, and add captions/licensing and other information.

Sather Opens ASCS Midwest Title Defense Friday at JMS

TULSA, Okla. (May 19, 2008) - Just over eight months ago, North Dakota's
Natalie Sather was crowned the first female champion in American Sprint Car
Series history. Now, with the 2008 season reaching full steam, the
23-year-old Fargo racer kicks off her ASCS Midwest Region title defense as
the series fires of at Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, NE.
Friday night's event atop the semi-banked, 3/8-mile Junction Motor Speedway
dirt oval marks the season opener for the ASCS Midwest Region after a pair
of scheduled April attempts at I-80 fell victim to Mother Nature.
With the legendary Kenny Woodruff fine-tuning the Shaver-powered Gateway
Chevrolet No. 94s J&J, Sather moved atop the ASCS Midwest Region point
charts in the latter portion of July and never looked back en route to
capturing the title with a 64-point advantage over 2006 series kingpin Toby
Chapman.
Among her top runs to the title was a fifth-place showing in last year's
Memorial Day weekend event at Junction Motor Speedway.
Sather will be joined on Friday night's card by a host of top contenders
from Nebraska and the surrounding area, including the likes of Brian Brown,
Jack Dover, Mike Boston, Jay Russell and many others.
Friday's action at Junction Motor Speedway is set to go green at 7:00 p.m.
Junction Motor Speedway is located in McCool Junction, NE, off I-80 Exit
353, then 5.6 miles south on US 81, then 0.3 miles west on CR 4, then north.

The ASCS Midwest Region is currently slated for 10 nights of action at eight
different tracks throughout Nebraska and the immediate surrounding area
stretching into Kansas, Missouri and Iowa.

American Sprint Cars on Tour National series, the American Sprint Car
Series' (ASCS) 17th year of activity will include approximately 250 nights
of racing at more than 100 different race tracks throughout 28 different
states and Canada.

Butler County Motorplex finally had opening night for the 2008 racing season
after Mother Nature took charge of the season for the past three weeks. Jacy
Todd was glad to get the new season started as he is the new promoter at the
speedway. All of the classes for the weekly shows this season are IMCA
sanctioned.
Mike Stearns took the first checkered flag of the season winning the first
of three IMCA Modified heat races with Kyle Berck, Brian Cudly and Mark
Kaspar rounding out the top four. Bob Zoubek won the second heat followed by
Chris Alcorn, Tom Svoboda, and Chey Hadan. Heat three found Scott Styskal in
the winners circle with Jim Krupicka, Mike Densberger and Terry Richards in
the top four.
Quinten Spragg won the first of two IMCA Hobby Stock heat races. Duane
Schroeder, Dusty Poessnecker and Brent VanDiest rounded out the top four.
Shane Hiatt won the second heat race followed by Nick Topil, Shane Schneider
and Mike Goldfuss.
Dan Rhiley and Shawn Turner were the heat winners in the IMCA Sport Compact
division. Benji Legg found the quick way around the speedway to win the
first of two IMCA Sport Modified heat races as Jesse VanLaningham Max
Harder, and Nick Hermsen rounded out the top four. The final Sport Mod heat
win went to Denny Berghahn Jr., with Rod Bronson second, Roin Karpisek third
and Steve Swarthout fourth.
Dan Rhiley took the checkered flag in the Sport Compact A feature Second
place went to Amanda Rhiley with Tony Rost challenging in third and Jeremy
Shanahan was fourth.
Denny Berghahn Jr. won the Sport Mod feature after Benji Legg lost his lead
due to mechanical problems in the race. Travis Runcie finished second with
Kyle Becker third and Jesse Vanlaningham fourth.
Hobby Stock dirver Shane Hiatt took advantage of the outside front row
starting position and led the feature for the win. Mike Goldfuss finished in
secont as Dusty Poessnecker battled his way to third with Quinten Spragg
finishing fourth.
Kyle Berck took the win in the IMCA Modified feature after starting in the
fourth row of the lineup. Berck had to work to get the lead as Chris Alcorn
and Scott Styskal were swapping positions with Berck throughout most of the
race. Alcorn finished second, Styskal was third and fourth went to Tom
Svoboda. There were several caution flags in the feature as mechanical
problems plagued some of the competitors. The final checkered flag was
displayed at 10:34 PM.

Eagle Raceway Russell, Smith, Hiatt and Miller Win Season Opener

After the first four attempts were spoiled by Mother Nature, Eagle Raceway’s regular season got off to a great start Saturday night as McDonald’s and 96KXsponsored McDonald’s Jr. Fan Club Night. A warm and windy afternoon set the stage for excitement as 165 cars signed into the pits. This lead to the great crowd being thrilled with 18 heat races and numerous feature events.
Heat races were problem free for the most part. The biggest exception being in the second Budweiser Championship 360 sprint heat race, where, on the second lap young Austin McCarl barrel-rolled down the backstretch after his left front wheel made contact with the right rear wheel of Mark Schmidt’s 9J. Thankfully Austin walked away from the incident, but his racing was over for the evening.
The A Features began when the Auto Trans Matic IMCA Sport Compacts took to Eagle’s high banks. Jason Miller grabbed the lead in his #77, followed by the 00 of Barry Kinnersley, the 62 of Justin Busboom and Jake Sells in the 21. It took Busboom only 8 laps to move around Kinnersley. The order remained the same to the finish.
The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks were next on the card. The 6A of Adam Armstrong was the leader at the end of the first lap with Shane Hiatt’s 21H and Kevin Anderson’s 22K close behind. On the 10th circuit, Armstrong spun in turn 2, handing the lead to Hiatt. At that time the running order was Hiatt, Anderson and Justin Wulf in the 86. The next lap saw Rob Brown roll his #42 in turn 4. From there to the finish, the front 3 racers were pressing each other at every opportunity. With 3 laps left, Anderson pulled alongside Hiatt. And on the checkered flag lap Anderson actually managed to move past Hiatt, only to be repassed in turn four coming to the finish line when Anderson bobbled. Anderson’s misstep also allowed the 22 of Nick Beckman to move around him, relegating Anderson to the third spot.
“I wasn’t sure I could get around Armstrong, until he went high in turn 2. I knew that the top was rough, and the bottom was good and tacky. So, I stayed low and that’s what allowed me to win” Hiatt said. Shane also said “I want to send out special thanks to the folks who help me out so much. Scott Bivens and Spyder Racecars built me an excellent car, and Jono’s Race Engines helped me put a great motor in it. I also need to thank my cousin Ryan, and Kloke for designing and painting the race car; and Design Shop for the graphics. Of course, I can’t forget my mom and dad; also Shawn, Nathan, Ryan, Kloke, TJ, Smitty, Mark Hiatt, Jim Sylvester, Darrin Adamy and Bill Steager”.

In the Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds, Dylan Smith nabbed the point in his #95 with the 7B of Chris Burk and Scott Bivens’ S56 in hot pursuit. On lap #4, Rik Gropp moved his V45 around Bivens bringing the 3A of Aaron Pella along. By the 9th lap, defending Modified Champion Chris Alcorn had advanced from his 6th row outside starting position to third; and a lap later passed Burk for 2nd. From there to the checkers it was a back-and-forth battle between Smith and Alcorn with Smith emerging victorious.
“I was watching the first 2 A Mains” Dylan said, “and I noticed that the Sport Compacts and Hobby Stocks tore the track up a little. So, we loosened up the car and it worked great”. “I managed to grab the lead early, and ran great until the last lap. I hit a rut, and couldn’t believe that Alcorn didn’t take advantage and pass me” he continued. “We were so close at the end. I’d pull away a little, and then he’d come back a little” he finished.

The last A Feature was for the Budweiser Championship 360 Sprints. On the initial start, Chris Roseland spun his #32 in turn 1 bringing out the yellow. The 2nd attempt saw the 28 of Ken Klabunde flip in turn 1. The next try saw Larry Pinegar lose the right front wheel off of his #44. When the race finally began Jeff Griffis took off from the front row in his #3 sprinter, followed by the #77 of John Klabunde, Tige Jensen’s #71 and the #76 of Jay Russell. It took Russell only 1 lap to move around Jensen into third and just 1 more lap to take over second from Klabunde. Shortly thereafter, Jensen also passed Klabunde to move into third position. By this time, however, Griffis had pulled off to a straightaway lead. On lap #9, Brad Krutz got past Jensen for third. With just 8 circuits remaining, Griffis got caught behind a lapped car and Russell dove low in turn four to snare the top spot. After the leaders had completed the lap the #14 of Josh Riggins and the 24B of Frank Galusha tangled, bringing out the final yellow flag of the evening. On the restart, Krutz used a textbook slide-job in turns 1 & 2 to get in front of Griffis. The finish was Russell, Krutz and Griffis.
“This car was one that we put together after wrecking one at Lake Ozark Speedway 3 weeks ago. We had planned on using that car here at Eagle, but the rainouts forced us to run other tracks. We’ve run 5 times this year now, but there’s no place we’d rather race than right here at Eagle” Jay stated. “In case no one has noticed, I love a dry-slick racetrack and running the cushion. That’s what got me up to second, and carried me to the win after I took the lead” he continued. He finished by saying “I really don’t think I could have gotten around Jeff if it wasn’t for the traffic. He was running really great, and even pulling away a little”.

After the first four attempts were spoiled by Mother Nature, Eagle Raceway’s regular season got off to a great start Saturday night as McDonald’s and 96KXsponsored McDonald’s Jr. Fan Club Night. A warm and windy afternoon set the stage for excitement as 165 cars signed into the pits. This lead to the great crowd being thrilled with 18 heat races and numerous feature events.
Heat races were problem free for the most part. The biggest exception being in the second Budweiser Championship 360 sprint heat race, where, on the second lap young Austin McCarl barrel-rolled down the backstretch after his left front wheel made contact with the right rear wheel of Mark Schmidt’s 9J. Thankfully Austin walked away from the incident, but his racing was over for the evening.
The A Features began when the Auto Trans Matic IMCA Sport Compacts took to Eagle’s high banks. Jason Miller grabbed the lead in his #77, followed by the 00 of Barry Kinnersley, the 62 of Justin Busboom and Jake Sells in the 21. It took Busboom only 8 laps to move around Kinnersley. The order remained the same to the finish.
The Valentino’s IMCA Hobby Stocks were next on the card. The 6A of Adam Armstrong was the leader at the end of the first lap with Shane Hiatt’s 21H and Kevin Anderson’s 22K close behind. On the 10th circuit, Armstrong spun in turn 2, handing the lead to Hiatt. At that time the running order was Hiatt, Anderson and Justin Wulf in the 86. The next lap saw Rob Brown roll his #42 in turn 4. From there to the finish, the front 3 racers were pressing each other at every opportunity. With 3 laps left, Anderson pulled alongside Hiatt. And on the checkered flag lap Anderson actually managed to move past Hiatt, only to be repassed in turn four coming to the finish line when Anderson bobbled. Anderson’s misstep also allowed the 22 of Nick Beckman to move around him, relegating Anderson to the third spot.
“I wasn’t sure I could get around Armstrong, until he went high in turn 2. I knew that the top was rough, and the bottom was good and tacky. So, I stayed low and that’s what allowed me to win” Hiatt said. Shane also said “I want to send out special thanks to the folks who help me out so much. Scott Bivens and Spyder Racecars built me an excellent car, and Jono’s Race Engines helped me put a great motor in it. I also need to thank my cousin Ryan, and Kloke for designing and painting the race car; and Design Shop for the graphics. Of course, I can’t forget my mom and dad; also Shawn, Nathan, Ryan, Kloke, TJ, Smitty, Mark Hiatt, Jim Sylvester, Darrin Adamy and Bill Steager”.

In the Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds, Dylan Smith nabbed the point in his #95 with the 7B of Chris Burk and Scott Bivens’ S56 in hot pursuit. On lap #4, Rik Gropp moved his V45 around Bivens bringing the 3A of Aaron Pella along. By the 9th lap, defending Modified Champion Chris Alcorn had advanced from his 6th row outside starting position to third; and a lap later passed Burk for 2nd. From there to the checkers it was a back-and-forth battle between Smith and Alcorn with Smith emerging victorious.
“I was watching the first 2 A Mains” Dylan said, “and I noticed that the Sport Compacts and Hobby Stocks tore the track up a little. So, we loosened up the car and it worked great”. “I managed to grab the lead early, and ran great until the last lap. I hit a rut, and couldn’t believe that Alcorn didn’t take advantage and pass me” he continued. “We were so close at the end. I’d pull away a little, and then he’d come back a little” he finished.

The last A Feature was for the Budweiser Championship 360 Sprints. On the initial start, Chris Roseland spun his #32 in turn 1 bringing out the yellow. The 2nd attempt saw the 28 of Ken Klabunde flip in turn 1. The next try saw Larry Pinegar lose the right front wheel off of his #44. When the race finally began Jeff Griffis took off from the front row in his #3 sprinter, followed by the #77 of John Klabunde, Tige Jensen’s #71 and the #76 of Jay Russell. It took Russell only 1 lap to move around Jensen into third and just 1 more lap to take over second from Klabunde. Shortly thereafter, Jensen also passed Klabunde to move into third position. By this time, however, Griffis had pulled off to a straightaway lead. On lap #9, Brad Krutz got past Jensen for third. With just 8 circuits remaining, Griffis got caught behind a lapped car and Russell dove low in turn four to snare the top spot. After the leaders had completed the lap the #14 of Josh Riggins and the 24B of Frank Galusha tangled, bringing out the final yellow flag of the evening. On the restart, Krutz used a textbook slide-job in turns 1 & 2 to get in front of Griffis. The finish was Russell, Krutz and Griffis.
“This car was one that we put together after wrecking one at Lake Ozark Speedway 3 weeks ago. We had planned on using that car here at Eagle, but the rainouts forced us to run other tracks. We’ve run 5 times this year now, but there’s no place we’d rather race than right here at Eagle” Jay stated. “In case no one has noticed, I love a dry-slick racetrack and running the cushion. That’s what got me up to second, and carried me to the win after I took the lead” he continued. He finished by saying “I really don’t think I could have gotten around Jeff if it wasn’t for the traffic. He was running really great, and even pulling away a little”.

I-80 Kids Club VIP Party Plus 2nd Annual Mark Wyman Big Wheel Shootout

Greenwood, NE (May 13, 2008) - Junior race fans at I-80 Speedway who belong
to the Ralston Dairy Queen Kids Club will be treated to a special VIP party
before the races on Sunday, May 18 featuring food, activities and drivers.

Dover Ready For Return To Knoxville

SPRINGFIELD, Neb. (May 14, 2007) -- Coming off his first
career ASCS National Tour triumph aboard Mark and Lori
Dover's Eckley-powered 3D Auto Transport No. 53 Eagle last
Friday night at Oklahoma City's State Fair Speedway, Jack
Dover is ready for his return to Knoxville Raceway this
Saturday.
Dover competed as a rookie in the 410 division at
Knoxville in 2007 and finished 14th in the Championship
Cup Series points. Team Dover Motorsports owners Marc and
Lori Dover were presented the 410 Car Owners of the Year
at the 2007 Knoxville Raceway awards banquet.
Last weekend Dover increased his ASCS heat race win total
to seven, a series best taking heat race wins at State
Fair Speedway and Devil's Bowl Speedway. Following a sixth
place feature finish at Devil's Bowl on Saturday, Team
Dover made the 12 hour trip back to Nebraska to attend
Jack's High School graduation.
With 15 races in the books so far in 2008, Saturday night
at Knoxville will mark the first 410 race for Team Dover
this season. A previous trip to Knoxville for the World of
Outlaws and the Outlaw shows at Huset's Speedway and US 36
Raceway were on their schedule but all three fell victim
to Mother Nature.
Knoxville Raceway is located on the Marion County
Fairgrounds in Knoxville, IA, thirty miles southeast of
Des Moines. From south Des Moines take the Highway 5
bypass to the Knoxville exit which will take you through
the city of Carlisle. Follow Highway 5 to the first
Knoxville exit (if ongoing road construction exists take
the Highway 14 exit then turn left at that stop). From the
first Knoxville exit proceed on what is Pleasant Street
turning left at the first stop light onto Highway
14/Lincoln Street. The track is about 3-4 blocks to your
left.

Butler County Motorplex Sport Mod issue
From Butler County Motorplex
Like Beatrice the Sports Mods are IMCA at Butler. IMCA has allowed for
Beatrice "for this year only" to include the B Mods that were there
previously. The main differences being IMCA has a 9 to 1 engine rule and the
B Mods have a 12 to 1 engine.
We were told by IMCA Vice President of Operations Brett Root that the ones
that aren't IMCA legal do not have to buy the license, so they will have
none of the benefits of being IMCA.
They will not receive State or National points, only track points. Butler
County is thinking of going strictly IMCA, but if you have any comments
about this or have an interest in us doing differently, fill free to contact

Update (May 14, 2008): Butler County will run the Beatrice Sport Mod rules this year and will be strictly IMCA next season.

The Pace Lap - May 8, 2008
I figured I'd get back to doing this, even with some tracks getting shows in
it still seems like a slow week in the racing world. Plus, I don't have
enough wind to write a full blown editorial this week and sometimes bits and
pieces are better anyhow.

So, let's start:
After fighting rain throughout April, the opening weekend of May was good to
most tracks.
-Shelby County Speedway got off its scheduled season opener with 127 cars in
6 classes packing the pits. That's great news to a group trying to restore
the facility to its previous stature.
-Despite rain on Friday, Beatrice got off its show Saturday. There was
universal praise for the track and the 100+ car turnout/3 hour show
certainly had to please the fans in attendance.
-I-80 clicked off a show on a very different track than the first two weeks.
A dry surface was probably a welcome change from the wet rough track before.
Fans were still going nuts long after a thrilling ProAm contest when Jeff
Joldersma edged out Rick Negrete.
-With Eagle canceled, a few of the sprint drivers headed out to parts far
and wide. Larry Pinegar rolled out with Lovegrove Racing only to be unable
to start the B at Knoxville. Defending Eagle Champ Mike Boston took the new
team to Dodge City and the NCRA season opener and finished eighth. Eagle
part timer Mike Chadd came home sixth, with Stu Snyder finishing 13th after
causing a late race caution. Lincoln's Don Droud Jr. won the A feature, his
third with the NCRA.
-I welcome the change in attitude and the amount of "forgiveness" given to
promoters this year for not wanting to race in the cold versus a very
hostile attitude few years ago. People realize what promoters are up against
and know that tracks that lose piles of money die...quickly.
And for those still crying foul, no promoter wants to rain out - canceling a
show that is a likely big loss is only the least of two evils. Don't equate
that with "making money." Canceling just means you lose less. You still have
to pay the rent, order the food (and hope you can return it), pay for the
ads, get the track ready during the week only to have that go for naught
when it rains, etc., etc.
-Brad "IBRacn" Brown mentioned on his rumors page that there's talk of a
Midwestern-based 410 Sprint Series. Before getting all wound up, Brad will
be the first guy to tell you to take it for what it's worth. My question is
this, did we forget about the (original, winged) Sprint Bandits from 2004?
It was the spec-headed 410 series that produced a unique qualifying format
still in use by the wingless version. The winged series folded after a year.
There's three reasons I can think of that anyone would even think of getting
behind such a thing: 1. The eternal complaint about lack of money at the
track level and greener pastures abroad, 2. Fear that rumors of Knoxville
ending weekly 410 racing would come true, or 3. perhaps there are teams who
can run 410s, but money dictates a limited schedule. Number three is perhaps
the only option that makes any sense to me, given some former WoO teams move
to the All-Stars. Maybe the poor economy could actually be a benefit to a
traveling series.
-Without any evidence to back up my claim, I believe that the 360 sprint
cars are the next division in the area to follow the Super Late Model
example of a hybrid touring/weekly series (SLMR), especially if the economy
in the area continues to flounder for the next 2-3 years. I would envision
an extended ASCS Midwest series, with frequent stops at a few tracks and
occasional visits to others. Not having the burdens of a high purse each
week could ease some of the pressure from...well...Eagle. Again, I have no
evidence, no conversations, nothing whatsoever, it's purely hypothetical.

WRP will have an open practice this Wednesday (5/7/08) from 7-9:30 p.m.,

Free Flower for Mom at I-80 Sunday
From I-80 Speedway:
Greenwood, NE (May 6, 2008) - This coming Sunday, May 11, Taylors Flowers
will be giving moms a free flower at I-80 Speedway in celebration of
Mother's Day, and members of the Ralston Dairy Queen Kids Club will get to
make cards for their moms!
Racing action slated for the night includes the return of the Spec Late
Model Racing Series (SLMR), as well as IMCA Crate Late Models, Great Clips
IMCA Modifieds, Midas IMCA Northern Sport Mods, and IMCA Sport Compacts.
Racing on Sunday starts at 5:55 p.m., with hot laps at 5:30 p.m. Pit Gates
open at 2:30 p.m. and front gate opens at 4:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $8 for
adults, $5 for juniors 13-18 with ID, $1 for kids 5-12 and kids under 5 are
free.
Next week, on Sunday, May 18th fans will get a chance to win tickets to the
Alphabet Soup Race presented by Your Area Dodge Dealers in the 2nd Annual
"Mark Wyman Big Wheel Shootout.".

I-80 Close finish in ProAm feature
Greenwood, NE(May 4, 2008) – The finish of the first night of the NASCAR Whelen All American Series belonged to the 66 of Jeff Joldersma in the NASCAR Certified Transmission Pro Am feature as he battled the 72 of Rick Negrete in a 2 lap shootout to the checkered flag.
With 12 laps remaining, Negrete had nearly a half-straightaway lead until a yellow came out with only two laps to go, giving Joldersma the chance to pull out the win on the inside.
The first four laps were filled with cautions in the Dodge NASCAR Late Model feature race because of several car failures, but the 28 of Bill Leighton Jr. \managed to take the lead with 13 to go and held on to it to take the checkered flag.
JC Wyman (4) led the Great Clips Modifieds feature race until he broke an r bar and his car died with 11 laps to go giving the 7n of Jay Noteboom the lead. With two laps to go, the 16 of Reese Coffee almost made it a run for the money, but Noteboom pulled it out with one lap left and took the checkered flag.
The IMCA Midas Northern Sport Mods feature race saw the 2007 IMCA Northern Sport Mod National Champion Chris Abelson in the 1x visit victory lane.
The 23 of Ole Oleson led the feature race for the IMCA Sport Compacts from green to checkered flag.

Trauernicht gets Monkey off his back at Beatrice

What an opening night after 3 rainouts in a row, Beatrice Speedway got night #1 of the 2008 Regular race in the books and what an exciting night. With over 100 cars in the pits. The crew and the racers ran off a very entertaining and timely show completing hte show in 3 hrs from the drop of the green flag in the first heat race. The 2008 race season looks to be an excitement filled show each and every week.
Dave Trauernicht took home the win in his BMS Mods, Seneca Sanitation, Friend Freightways, Holtmeier Farms, Body-n-Balance Massage, Reedy Machine and Fab, K & B Tobacco and Brown's Shoe Fit sponsored IMCA Modified. He took the lead about 3/4 of the way into the feature after chasing down Lance Borgman and Jordy Nelson from the 12th starting postion. Borgman and Nelson were waging quite the battle and then it became a 3 car battle with Trauernicht getting the lead and eventually holding of Borgman too take home the win. Borgman, Jordan Grabouski, Jordy Nelson and Dan Nelson followed him across the line.
Adam Armstrong dominated the Factory Stock A Feature too take home the win in his Denny's Hot Rod Repair and Neapco sponsored Armstrong Chassis. Neal Mittan, Gary Laflin, Jeff Shew and Dustin Schmidt rounded out the front 5.
Benji Legg of Beatrice Took the top honors in the IMCA Sport Mod A Feature in his Spady-Runcie, Extreme Race Signs, The Buss Stop, Jet Racing and The Rail sponsored IMCA Sport Mod. He took the lead from his cousin Craig Evers and then they waged a "family feud" till the end with Legg taking the win and Evers finishing in the Bridesmaid position. Evers, Mark Saathoff, Max Harder and Ricky Rohr completed the top 5.
Chad Borgman of Beatrice took home the win in the IMCA Hobby Stocks in his Griffith transmission and Joel "The Beer Guy" sponsored Intimidator Chassis. Borgman held off a challenging Robby Marsh, Murray, Haugen, Matt Fralin and RJ Macku. Dan Rhiley of Bennington in his 2 Men in Shop sponsored IMCA Sport Compact. Rhiley held off Amanda Rhiley, Ron Frank, Monte Fralin and Scott Parde.

Wavelink Kart Races postponed
The Go-Kart races scheduled for Saturday, May 3rd have been postponed to
Sunday May 4th.
