This past weekend

Memorial Day weekend has become THE weekend for auto racing around the world. From the Grandaddy of them all, the Indy 500, NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte, the Grand Prix of Monaco…all the way to the local dirt tracks.

This weekend I visited three venues. I traveled to I-80 and Junction on behalf of the ASCS and took to Eagle on Saturday. As much as I wanted to attend the Alphabet Soup race at I-80 and the Bootlegger’s Run at Eagle the following two days, plans for the holiday and being gone three nights in a row sets my priorities…if you get my drift.

But I'll talk about what I did attend. First up the ASCS at I-80. On the card were Pro-Ams and NASCAR Late Models. Despite their best efforts, the big tires sealed up the track and it went dry and dusty. Makes for impossible picture-taking conditions, but what it did allow was me to watch some fantastic A features. Matt Boucher fought with Rick Negrete for what appeared to be second place as Jeff Joldersman cruised to the checkers. Joldersma’s DQ for weight gave the win to an ecstatic Boucher. Billy Koons swiped the Late Model lead late in the race to take his first Late Model win.

The sprint feature was the topper though as Chad Humston sliced and diced his way from the sixth row to take the lead and eventually the win, with Brian Brown and Don Droud Jr. putting on a “slide” show of their own. Racing throughout was furious – but then I’d be driving like mad if I were racing toward I-80’s victory lane reception too.

One thing I’ve noticed watching sprints at I-80, if the track goes to the top, the racing usually ends up fantastic. I’ll take a dry track there over a lock-down to the bottom tacky one any day. Hey, if there isn’t dust in the beer it ain’t racin’, right?

If you haven’t been to the recent sprint races at I-80, you’re really missing out.

Next day: JMS. Like Thursday it was above average temps with a breeze and a nice crowd visiting for what came to be a lovely late spring evening. Delmar Friesen has a knack of producing surprising tracks in the midst of the unfavorable conditions. The initial dust kicked up by the GOTRA hot laps scared me a bit, but they managed pretty well, with the occasional spritzing in between classes.

The respectable field of GOTRA vintage racers were a fitting backdrop to pre-race chats with historian Bob Mays, Wayne Dake, Joe Orth and others reminiscing about the past and discussing Bob’s new book, Big Car Thunder, Vol. II – which I’m reviewing for this site. I’ve really developed a soft spot for the GOTRA cars, I just wished they could really race ‘em.

Some tracks would tell a field of three cars, “sorry boys, load ‘em” but Delmar ran the show and I have to remember the fact that the poor compact count wasn’t the fault of the people who showed up, including winner Troy Hoffman. But the Vintage Lites (‘dwarf’ cars) brought a thick field with David Rafurty taking the feature going away – with visor up throughout most of the race!

A strong field of 26 sprints made up the field. Brian Brown’s turn four wheelie kicked off the 20-car Sprint A, Shane Stewart made his way up front quickly to  take the lead from Ryan Roberts, while Brown, Don Droud Jr and Gregg Bakker tried to out-muscle each other around the big 3/8 mile. Brown popped a right rear late in the contest, as did April I-80 winner Jonathan Cornell. Stewart cruised to the win, with Roberts rolling four bald tires across the line in second. Despite the abrasive A feature surface, it was a decent feature and once again, JMS kept the show rolling, (the stoppages were nothing worse than normal) and the facility continues to be one of the best around.

Eagle’s first fan appreciation night brought in a strong crowd at $5/head. The Beatrice move to Fridays has really raised the competition bar in the hobbies and modifieds with the southern drivers giving the Eagle boys more than a run. But with parity we often get a little too much pushin’ and shovin’ resulting in spun cars and banged up metal between talented, competitive and determined drivers. The hobbies had the threat of the clock calling an early end to their race, but fortunately they straightened out long enough for Rob Brown to take his first win since ‘06.

Chris Abelson raced down from Sioux City after a Park Jefferson rainout with no concern about the Beatrice / Eagle rivalry as he snatched the win in the Modifieds. Dave Tadlock became the fourth winner in four races in the compacts.

On the other hand, the sprints had their major incident occur when rookie Ian Eastman spun at the front of the pack, Eastman’s mishap resulted in four other cars coming to a stop in various states of disarray. Veteran Tadd Holliman consoled Eastman in the infield; it was obvious that the young rookie really wished he could have that one back. After a lengthy red-flag stop Mike Boston checked out from the field on the dry, fast-lane-up-top track with Jeff Griffis scrambling from the back of the field to run second.

My legs hurt, and I was glad to take it easy for the next two days. A great weekend.

Stewart Skewers ASCS Midwest at McCool Junction

Lonnie Wheatley, McCOOL JUNCTION, Neb. (May 22, 2009) – Shane Stewart took full advantage of one last tune-up for this weekend's $10,000-to-win Steve King Memorial in Kansas by racing to victory lane in Friday night's 25-lap American Sprint Car Series Midwest Region feature at Junction Motor Speedway.

The current Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters points leader raced past Ryan Roberts on the sixth round and led the rest of the way aboard Paul Silva's Wesmar-powered ProBilt Construction/Palmer Properties No. 57 A.R.T.

"I have to give it to Paul (Silva), he made the right call on the setup," Stewart commented in victory lane. "We figured it might get harder to pass later in the race so we had to get out front as quick as possible."

And, after gridding the field outside the second row, it didn't take the Oklahoma native long.

When pole starter Brian Brown bobbled at the drop of the green flag, outside front row starter Ryan Roberts gunned into the lead with Stewart battling into second soon after and setting his sights on the leader, who had fled to a six car-length lead.

Stewart closed in on Roberts by the fifth round and charged by for the lead exiting turn two on the sixth lap. After entering lapped traffic two rounds later, Stewart slipped away to nearly a straightaway advantage as Roberts, Brown and Don Droud, Jr., diced for position in his wake.

Jonathan Cornell soon joined the fray for runner-up honors, only to pop a right rear tire with 15 laps in the books after climbing to fourth. Four laps later, Brown surrendered a podium position after suffering a similar malady.

Roberts kept Stewart within striking distance on the final restarts, including a green-white-checkered dash to the strip after Jason Danley looped it in turn two, but was unable to mount a serious bid for the win.

Stewart flashed under the checkered flag with a four car-length advantage over Roberts, with Gregg Bakker taking the show position. Droud, Jr., crossed the stripe fourth, with Jack Dover rounding out the top five.

Lee Grosz was sixth, with Mike Chadd, Patrick Bourke, Eric Lutz and Johnn Cressman completing the top ten.

Droud, Roberts and Chad Humston topped heat race action for the 26-car field, with Cressman winning the "B" Main.

Humston Thumps ASCS Midwest on Thursday at I-80 Speedway

(click on images for larger pics)

Lonnie Wheatley, GREENWOOD, Neb. (May 21, 2009) – Chad Humston of Giltner, NE, kicked off the Memorial Day weekend of racing festivities for the American Sprint Car Series by racing from six rows deep to top Thursday night's 25-lap ASCS Midwest Region main event at Nebraska Raceway Park's I-80 Speedway.

Charging from eleventh, the 22-year-old raced into the lead on the 12th round aboard the Mark Burch Motorsports Engler Tool & Machine No. 1m Wolfweld and never looked back en route to his first career ASCS triumph.

While Humston began his drive from mid-pack, it was pole starter Ryan Anderson gunning into the lead at the drop of the green flag. The Charter Oak, IA, shoe paced the field for the initial handful of circuits before Brian Brown slid into the lead on a lap six restart.

Brown soon had company for the point when Don Droud, Jr., battled past Anderson for second and then slid by Brown for the lead to complete the eleventh lap. But it was short-lived, as Humston hooked up on the topside of the 4/10-mile oval on the lap six restart and blitzed from ninth all the way into the lead by the 12th round.

Humston waded through a pair of cautions over the final seven laps, fending off sliders on the restarts and then checking out to secure the win over the final five lap charge to the stripe.

Behind him, Droud and Brown slid back and forth for position in virtually every corner with Droud getting the nod for runner-up honors at the stripe. Brown settled for the show position, with two-time ASCS Northern Plains champion Lee Grosz and Missouri's Jonathan Cornell rounding out the top five.

Tenth-row starters Stuart Snyder and Mike Chadd raced to sixth and seventh, respectively, with Johnn Cressman, Bobby Becker and Jason Danley completing the top ten.

After advancing from "B" Main competition, current Lucas Oil ASCS National points leader Shane Stewart had charged from 18th to fourth when he looped it in turn four on the 21st lap after slight contact with Brian Brown. Stewart's night was done when he was clipped by Cornell, who then wrestled his way to the checkered flag minus a nose wing over the final five laps.

Droud, Tige Jensen, Cornell and Danley topped heat race action for the 33-car field, with Austin McCarl winning the 12-lap "B" Main.

Photos from May 16 are now online.

Eagle 5-16-09 Photos

Eagle Raceway 5-16-09

By Greg Soukup

Despite unusually cool May temperatures and a brisk north wind a good crowd
showed up for McDonalds Junior Fan Club Night at
"America's Home Track" Eagle Raceway. Each class had drivers close to the
track records all night as the action served to warm the crowd through the
evening.

The members of the McDonalds Junior Fan Club were featured during
intermission as a "Candy Grab" was held on the front stretch. Local area
dentists will be busy as every youngster walked away with quite a haul of
sweets.

The first A Main saw the Valentino's IMCA Hobby Stocks challenge Eagle
Raceway's high banked 1/3 mile. The early going saw a top 4 of Jeff Reed's
29, the 21 of Derick Noonan, RJ Macku in the 1R and Don Hall Jr. in the 92.
Defending track champion Kevin Anderson moved his 22K up to 4th by lap 4 as
Macku vaulted into the lead. As lap 5 began Hall Jr. spun out in turn 1,
bringing out the yellow flag. On the restart Adam Armstrong, last week's
feature winner moved up all the way to the third spot. On lap 6 Josh Kennell
moved his 71K up into the 4th position just before a car lost its right rear
tire in turn #4 for the second caution. During the slow-down Anderson was
penalized 3 spots. That made the running order Macku, Armstrong, Reed and
Kennell with Anderson now relegated to 5th. Anderson moved back to third on
lap 8 as Armstrong slowed to a stop in turn 3. That moved Anderson back into
second ahead of Reed and Kennell. On the restart lap Reed headed into the
pits with a flat tire, with Nick Beckman's 22 moving up to fourth. The
running order stayed the same until with 3 laps left Anderson passed Macku
for the lead. The pass was negated when Hall Jr.'s engine expired setting up
a 3 lap dash to the finish. Anderson did manage to pass Macku again with 2
to go and held on to take the checkers in first. After the IMCA officials
completed their inspections in the tech area however, Anderson was
disqualified for excessive engine setback. The results were Macku, Kennell,
Beckman and Roy E. Armstrong in the 6R.

Macku's first words were "I'll take a win at Eagle any way I can get it". He
continued by saying "I need to thank my dad first of all, and of course all
of my sponsors". RJ's sponsors are Wollen Racing, Pillsworth Remodeling, B &
B Lawn Service, World of Roofs and "The Handsome" Chad Fegley of The Shop
Inc.

Scott Bivens held the point in his #10 as the Monster Energy Drink IMCA
Modifieds came around the first time in their feature event. He was followed
by Justin Wulf's 86, the 94 of Dan Nelson and the 3W of Stacey Wilhelm.
Wilhelm brought out the first caution of the race when he spun out in 1 and
2. That moved Clint Homan's 27 into fourth. Wulf spun out in turn 4 on the
fifth lap, collecting 2 other racers, as Nelson was moved to the rear of the
field for the contact. That moved the 1R of Matt Richards to second as he
had passed Homan prior to the yellow coming out. He was followed by Homan
and Bob Zoubek's 5S. The next lap saw Homan drop back and Zoubek head to the
pits with a flat. Both Johnny Saathoff in the 96J and Sean Burkland in the
B9 moved past Homan. 3 laps later Burkland moved around Saathoff for third
and then passed Richards the next time around. Saathoff moved into third
with 9 to go, and Homan was sent to the rear after debris from his car
brought out the yellow on the next circuit. Dustin Anderson's 8A stopped in
turn 2 shortly after that. This caused a green/white/checkered finish as the
time limit for the race was fast approaching. The finishing order was
Bivens, Burkland, Saathoff and Richards the top 4.

When asked for comments Scott stated "I really don't know what to say; this
is the first time you've been here to interview me". When reminded of all of
the times he was forced to load a wrecked car, or had to drop out of a
feature race Scott said "I really wasn't expecting to get my first win at
Eagle this year, due to all of the competition we have here. Honestly
there's probably 20 guys capable of winning any night out here. I just can't
believe it". Bivens' sponsors include Circle Track Magazine, Bert
Transmissions and The Fuel Sports Bar.

The next A Main was for the Auto Trans Matic IMCA Sports Compacts. Brett
Saathoff took the lead in his #11B followed by Mary Lenz in the 17, Amanda
Rhiley's 51 and the 5 of Larry Cronin. Adam Vrbka wasted no time as he moved
his 7V all the way up to third on lap #2 and Cronin passed Rhiley to remain
fourth. The yellow came out on lap #4 as Trevor Noonan lost his right rear
off of the #66. The order remained unchanged until with 7 to go Vrbka got
around Lenz, following it up by taking the lead the next go-around as
Saathoff fell back. Lenz moved to 2nd with Cronin taking third. Cronin
advanced into second with 4 laps remaining and followed Vrbka to the
checkers with Lenz in third and Jack Prall IV grabbing fourth on the final
lap.

"My car handled really good tonight. I was disappointed last week, because I
thought that I should have won. So, I had to make up for it tonight" Vrbka
said. Adam's sponsors include Eagle Automotive, Big Dan's Auto Body & Pain
and Low Budget Customs.

The Budweiser 360 Sprints were the last feature to be contested on the
night. The worst incident of the evening occured as the field came around
through turns 1 and 2 on lap #1. Ken Klabunde's 28 went through a series of
flips through turn 2, causing the red flag to fly. Thankfully, Klabunde was
unhurt. As the cars came to the line after a complete restart Tadd
Holliman's 23R was at the point with Jack Dover having made a fantastic
charge around the top to grab second, Gage Dorr's 17 in third and the 3 of
Jeff Griffis in fourth. Dover grabbed the lead from Holliman on lap #2.
Griffis moved up to third on the 5th circuit. The yellow was displayed on
lap 6 as Regan Kitchen's 21 and the 44 of Doug Lovegrove came to a halt in
turn 4. One lap after the green flew again Jason Danley came up to fourth.
Two-time defending track champion Mike Boston was on the move also, taking
his 51 sprinter into third with 11 to go as Dover had checked out to over a
1/2 lap lead. That made the running order Dover, Holliman, Boston and
Griffis. Three more laps were in the books when Boston passed Holliman for
second, but before the leaders passed the flag stand Danley spun in turn
four after contact with the 9J of Mark Schmidt. Danley's racer was
sufficiently damaged that it was taken to the pits behind a wrecker. The
restart had 4 lapped cars between Dover and Holliman, giving him clear
sailing. With 7 laps left Josh Riggins advanced his 4J to fourth as Boston
got past Holliman to garner 2nd. Riggins also moved around Holliman on the
last lap as Tige Jensen completed his run from the back, having come from
the B Feature to finish 4th. At the checkers it was Dover, Boston, Riggins,
Jensen and Holliman.

"I want to thank Greg McCormack, Alex Johnson and especially my wonderful
mother and my dad for all of their hard work this weekend. We finished
second behind Terry McCarl last night up in Jackson, Minnesota and then
hauled all the way home so we could run at Eagle tonight. "The car was
really, really good tonight; actually, it was perfect. And the track was in
good condition, considering the wind all day" Dover said. Jack's sponsors
include Thorpe's Body Shop, Homepride, Trail Powder Coating, Eckley Engines,
Eagle Chassis, Butler and Keizer.

Next week will be the first Family Appreciation Night this year with $5
admission for those 5 and up. The U.S. Air Force Monster Truck will be on
display with the Air Force Honor Guard also in attendance. Front gates open
at 5:30 with hot laps at 6:30 and racing at 7. The Budweiser 360 Sprints,
Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds, Valentino's IMCA Hobby Stocks and Auto
Trans Matic IMCA Sport Compacts will be featured.

And be sure to come out on Memorial Day May 25th as NASCAR stars Casey
Mears, Dave Blaney, Jimmy Spencer and Rusty Wallace join Casey's father
Roger Mears of Indy 500 fame to compete in 2 Late Model races. Complete
event information can be found at http://www.eagleraceway.com/?page_id=1288

Berck, Leighton, Joldersma, Cook, and Kurtzer Pick Up I-80 Wins

From I-80 Speedway

I-80 Speedway kicked off its regular season in grand fashion Sunday evening
May 3, 2009, treating fans to 5 classes of stock car racing on a nearly
perfect dirt racing surface. The .4 mi high banked oval started off tacky,
graduating to a smooth as glass dry slick racing surface on what turned out
to be a cool, cloudy evening; weather that was very race engine friendly.

The touring SLMR Series headlined the 5 classes, with another stellar
performance by Marquette, NE's Kyle Berck, who wrestled the lead of the SLMR
25 lap A Feature from pole-sitter Mike Wiarda with 6 laps remaining. Wiarda
in his # 1w used the low side of the track to lead 19 laps, but Berck's
flying # 14 was able to grab the lead in turn 4 after Berck tried a higher
line. Most of the high-powered, high revving Super Late Models ran the low
side, with several good battles for position throughout the 24 car field.
Lightning Leon Zeitner came away 3rd, with son Justin Zeitner right behind,
finishing 4th. 5th was Travis Dickes in the 21t. Al Zeitner, brother of
Leon, Uncle of Justin brought his yellow # 76 home in 6th.

There is no question that the 2009 SLMR field is as tough as any Late Model
field anywhere. For those who may doubt this, there were 2 B Features, both
of which contained drivers who could be and have been A Feature winners.
Dave Livingston of Blair was on his way to a good run in the first SLMR B
Feature, at least a top 3 finish that would have advanced him to the A
Feature, but mechanical problems took the # 17 to the pits early. Brian
Kenkel of Elkhorn took the win, followed by Blair's Jay Stewart, and the 5x
of Mike Marushak. The top 3 finishers of the second SLMR B Feature were the #
6 of Giltner, NE's Al Humphrey, Massena IA's Chris Speiker, and Jason
Hobscheit piloting the 1j. In a most rare occurrence, the red # 53 of Joe
Kosiski ended up 4th, 1 spot shy of advancing to the A, thus Kosiski's night
was over. There were several other A Feature caliber cars/drivers that had
to load up after the SLMR B Features, including Scott Koskovich & Mel
Zeitner.

The SLMR series will appear at I-80 again Sunday May 24, as a part of the
Alphabet Soup race.

Bill Leighton Jr of Omaha piloting the missle-diguised-as NASCAR Late Model
# 28 blasted off from his outside front row starting position in the 24 car,
25 lap NASCAR Late Model A Feature, not only leading every lap, but
scorching the competition, lapping no less than 14 cars en route to the most
dominating win of the evening. Clint Benson's # 00 ran 2nd, followed by the
43 of Matt Buller. Mike Wallace, Andrew Kosiski, and Les Siebert rounded out
the top 6. Early in the race, it appeared veteran Ron Tilley's 56T was
headed for a good run, but Tilley pulled out early.

The 18 lap Pro Am A Feature displayed an excellent battle for the lead
between the #5 of Marty Steinbach and the #66 of Jeff Joldersma. Both used
the low side of the race track, but it was Joldersma who prevailed for the
win. Joldersma's 1973 Chevelle Malibu, in spite of its longer wheel base,
was smooth and impressive en route to victory. Joldersma took the lead from
Steinbach on lap 7, surviving a caution flag/single file restart with 6 laps
remaining. Stienbach challenged Joldersma the entire rest of the way,
finishing a strong second, followed by the 72 of Rick Negrete, Chad Sanders
in the 49x, and the #8 of Nick Steier.

Joldersma donated his winnings to Hannah, a young girl battling illness from
central Nebraska. He also gave his winning trophy to a delighted young fan
in the grandstands.

Look for the Pro Am field to be strong and competitive for the entire 2009
season.

The ever growing IMCA Sport Mod division at I-80 produced an exciting A
Feature finish. Dennis Cook of Missouri Valley, IA bested the 24 car field
in the 15 lap A Feature. Cook used the middle-to-upper groove of the race
track for the majority of the race, appearing to have a sure victory tucked
away until a caution flag with 4 laps remaining brought the field together
for a single file restart. An excellent 3 car battle ensued with the z00 of
Brad Tuttle, the #99 of Jesse Sobbing, and Cook dicing back and forth,
trading positions for the final laps. Cooks' #45 prevailed for the win.
Sobbing was second followed by Tuttle, who, rather than finishing third, was
found to have a carburetor that failed post race inspection, thus was
disqualified. Hence, Kyle Harpster wound up third followed by Jim Hendricks
and Mike Swarthout.

The 4 cylinder IMCA Sport Compact 22-car A Feature was led from start to
finish by the yellow #57 of Austin Kurtzer of Nebraska City. Kurtzer was
challenged by Pete Fink Jr. and brother Alex Fink; both driving black Dodge
Neons. Kurtzer's Chevy Beretta answered all challenges. Kenin Colestock
wound up fourth followed by Jamie Spanel, Ole Olson and Joe Baker, in the
blue 9x Acura.

Dover, Smith, Macku and Moyer Win Eagle Season Opener

Story by Greg Soukup

Although Mother Nature cancelled the first 3 nights of racing this year, the
rescheduled Season Opener presented by Pepsi won out on a night of cool
temperatures, fast cars and three-wide racing throughout at "America's Home
Track" Eagle Raceway.

A large car count thanks to numerous Beatrice regulars taking advantage of
the new combined points fund between Beatrice and Eagle provided thrills for
the great crowd who showed up to quench their racing thirst.

The heat races went off without major incidents, setting the stage for the 4
A Features.

The first main event was for the Valentino's IMCA Hobby Stocks. On the very
first lap the 6A of Adam Armstrong rolled in turns 1 and 2 after making
contact with the 6 of Michael Elliot. As the cars came around to finish
their first lap the 22 of Nick Beckman held the lead with the B4 of Ben
Becher, the 1R of RJ Macku and the 94 of Mike Hansen close behind. It took
Macku only 3 laps to vault into second. With 10 laps left Kevin Anderson
moved his 22K into the 4th spot and 2 laps later jumped into 3rd. With just
5 laps remaining Mike Hansen's car slowed to a stop in turn 1. On this
restart Macku took advantage, grabbing first as Anderson also passed Beckman
moving into the second spot and the 6R of Roy Armstrong taking 4th. The
running order remained the same to the finish, despite numerous challenges
in the top 4.

"I really didn't think that I had a chance to win, starting 11th. But,
thanks to a really nice track I had moved up to 7th before the first
caution. Then I started to think about taking Beckman's line over after the
last caution, and that's what I did to get the win" RJ said. "It was funny,
because before the race I went over and told Kevin Anderson that I was going
to pay him back for beating me at the end of one of the races last year" he
continued. He added "I really like this new Friday/Saturday deal with
Beatrice. I love racing at both tracks and racing with the Beatrice
drivers". RJ finished by saying "I want to thank my Dad, my fiancé Stacy ,
Chad Fegley and most of all the fans for their great support". RJ's sponsors
include B & B Lawn Service, Pillsworth Remodel, World of Roofs and The Shop,
Inc.

The Monster IMCA Modifieds were the next feature event of the evening. As
happened in the Hobby Stock A Main the first lap wasn't completed as the 5s
of Zoubek, the 94 of Dan Nelson and the 22J of Justin Jurgens were involved
in a melee at the flag stand as they came to it for the first time. Since
the leaders had completed the lap the running order held with Sean
Burkland's B9 at the point, Johnny Saathoff's 96, the 27 of Clint Homan and
Dylan Smith's 95 holding down the top 4 spots. On the restart lap Homan
moved into 2nd and Smith also passed Saathoff to take over 3rd. The running
order did not change until with 10 laps to go the KY19 of Kyle Vanover spun,
collecting Ed Raines' 11AA.

Smith took full advantage of the restart to move into first. At that time
the running order was Smith, Burkland, Homan and Saathoff. With 5 laps left,
Bob Zoubek moved into the third position ahead of Saathoff. Shortly
thereafter Homan slowed to a stop in turn four, bringing out another yellow
flag. With just 2 laps remaining Jordan Grabouski garnered the 4th position
in his #30. At the finish it was Smith, Burkland, Zoubek and Grabouski.

"There's not a lot to say tonight. I got a good starting spot for the A on a
fast track and the car worked really good" Smith stated. Among Dylan's
sponsors are Active Life Chiropractic, Jet Racing and Eckley Racing engines.

The Auto Trans Matic IMCA Sport Compacts then rolled out to compete. The
completion of the first circuit saw Brian Haller's #32B in first, followed
by the 55 of Garrett Rech, the 29 of Matt Moyer and Jack Prall IV as the top
four. On the restart Moyer jumped past Rech, as did Prall IV. The next lap
Haller made hard contact with the turn 2 wall, sending him to the infield
with extensive front-end damage. That put Moyer in first, Prall IV in
second, Rech in third and the 7 of Matt Fralin in fourth. At the finish it
was Moyer, Prall IV, Fralin and the 94m of Brock McDougal.

"That track was awesome. I feel privileged to come out to Eagle and live the
dream. I want to thank the safety crew and most of all Roger and Michelle"
Moyer said. Matt's sponsors include Kinnersley Grading, Hemmer Towing and
General Siding.

The last race of the evening on Eagle's high banks was the A Feature for the
Budweiser 360 sprints, and it was what many said was the best race at the
track in a long time. As the racers came to the flag stand the first time
Mike Chadd led in his #4, followed by Jack Dover's #53, Mike Boston in the
51 and the 44 of Doug Lovegrove. Dover wasted no time, making the first of
what be numerous passes throughout the race between several drivers to take
first. Chadd returned the favor on lap #3, coming to the flag stand in the
lead as Kevin Danley flipped his sprinter in turn 3. After 2 more laps were
run Tige Jensen took over the fourth spot. With 7 laps in the books Dover
again regained the lead. 15 circuits remained when Mike Boston got around
Chadd to move into second. Shortly after that Trevor Grossenbacher lost the
handle on his sprinter, coming to a sideways stop in turns 3 & 4. Bobby
Becker, having nowhere to go struck him broadside ending Becker's night.

Grossenbacher was able to head to the pits and return to racing. When racing
resumed Chadd again moved into the lead. Three more laps had been completed
when the 91 of Brad Krutz invaded the top 4. This brought about yet another
fierce battle as he and Jensen fought back and forth for the position.
Meanwhile the contest for the top 3 raged on. Boston and Chadd traded
positions with Boston taking second and then passing Dover for the lead.
With 6 left Gene Acklund's 14 spun in turn 2, again jamming up the field.

Nick Clifford used the restart to move up into fourth, but spun out the next
lap. Clifford kept his sprinter going, so no caution was thrown. This put
Krutz back in the fourth spot. Dover, having been passed by Chadd again got
back by with 4 to go.

As the field came around for the last time Adam Gullion spun his #96KX in
turns 1 and 2. That set up the final run to the checkers with the running
order being Boston, Dover, Chadd and Krutz. As the green flew Dover slid
under Boston, only to have Boston retake the position around the top. The
confrontation continued with Dover on the bottom and Boston outside of him.
Coming to the finish Dover took the point for good, moving under Boston
again making slight contact with him. Boston bounced off the front stretch
wall but managed to finish second.

"The track slicked off, and to be really honest Boston had the better car.
On the last corner I slid up in front of him, doing what I had to do to win
and it worked" Jack stated. He finished by saying "I need to give special
thanks to my wonderful Mom and also my Dad; also Alex, who was most of my
crew tonight since Dad has a broken arm". Jack's sponsors include ATV
