Passing of Gary "Smitty" Smith

Many remember "Smitty" as the Wavelink Raceway Park flagman as well as his
time atop the stand at Eagle and I-80.

Gary Edward Smith 71, Lincoln, died peacefully at home Friday (01/25/08).
Owner Geier's Bakery 1961-1995; Lincoln High School Graduate; Lincoln High
School Athletic Hall of Fame; Nebraska Athletic Hall of Fame (Team
football), 1954; Minor League Chicago Cubs, 1956-1958; Los Angeles Dodgers,
1958-1961; coached Leon's Midget Football, American Legion Baseball, and
Little Fry Basketball; flagged car races at Eagle Raceway & Waverly Raceway
Park; loved playing golf & flying radio controlled airplanes. Gary's
grandchildren were the greatest joys of his life.

Survived by: wife, Diane P.; son, Gary Kevin & wife, Julie, Lincoln;
grandchildren, Ryan Smith & Sarah Smith; daughter, Kimberly Brown & husband,
Stephen, Phoenix; daughter-in-law, Jonna Smith, Lincoln; brothers-in-law &
spouses, Richard & Rae Geier; David & Sherri Geier, all of Lincoln; Donald
Geier & Barbara Johnson, Overland Park, Kan.; nieces & nephews. Preceeded in
death by his son, Randy; and parents, Edward & Helen.

Memorial Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday (01/30/08), Butherus, Maser & Love
Funeral Home, Lincoln. Burial: Lincoln Memorial Park. Visitation: 9 a.m. - 9
p.m. Sunday through Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers,
memorials suggested to JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation); HoriSun
Hospice; or Southeast Nebraska Cancer Center. Condolences may be left @
