2007 Holiday Horsepower Drive nets $25K for Omaha Children's Hospital

By Randy Lawrence

OMAHA, Neb. (December 16, 2007) -- The second annual Holiday Horsepower Drive took place on Saturday, December 15, 2007. The event organized by Modified driver Buddy Ray Jones and Rachael Lee brought together fifteen drivers from the eastern Nebraska region to benefit the Omaha Children's Hospital.

The owners of Quaker Steak and Lube in Council Bluffs, IA., graciously offered the use of a section of the restaurant for the drivers and volunteers to rap presents prior to the Children's Hospital visit. Boxes were filled with donated items including racing hats, T-shirts, die cast cars, decals, coloring books and much more.

Representatives from the Children’s Hospital were on hand at Quaker Steak and Lube and then accompanied the drivers and entourage back to the Children's Hospital. Four groups toured different floors and had the chance to meet and talk with the patients and present them with a holiday gift box.

Following the tour Buddy Ray Jones addressed the drivers and the hospital staff, "I'd like to thank you all for your time, help and donations." said Jones. "Sometimes we think we have problems in our life, but after seeing these kids and knowing what they are going through makes our problems seem small in comparison."

The total assessed value of the 2007 Holiday Horespower Drive was $24,789.26.

Mechanic files suit against track

Poor fencing, rules enforcement and driver age cited

By STEVE HORRELL , Edwardsville Intelligencer Today (Edwardsville, IL)
12/12/07

Man injured by flying tire at race

On the evening of June 4, 2004, Wayne Carson's life changed dramatically.

The 64-year-old diesel mechanic had been standing in the pit area at the Madison County Speedway in Highland when he was struck in the back of the head by a tire that had flown off one of the Hornet cars that had been racing on the oval dirt track

An ambulance nearby whisked him from the Madison County Fairgrounds at Lindendale Park down the road to St. Joseph's Hospital and for the next 33 days Carson split time between St. Louis University Trauma Center and St. Mary's Hospital.

The incident caused permanent brain damage, dizziness and memory loss, and Carson soon filed a lawsuit against the Madison County Fair Association, its treasurer and secretary Sue Zobrist and Charles DePew, who organizes and promotes races at the Highland track. The suit alleges that the 8-foot-tall fence protecting the pit area was not only in disrepair, it was too short to catch wheels and other car parts that might fly off during a race. During his opening statements, attorney Michael Bedesky countered that the fence was no different from pit fences at the region's other tracks in Godfrey, Greenville, Mount Vernon and Brownstown.

The race had been videotaped by a spectator, and Carson's attorney, Jon Carlson, showed the film to jurors on Tuesday morning, the first day of the trial. The film begins by showing several 4-cylinder Hornets jockeying for position around the quarter-mile track. About 2 1/2 minutes into the race, one of the cars loses its right front wheel. The video showed the tire spinning in the air to a height that experts later calculated to be 15 feet. The film did not capture the accident itself.

first place at the Pepsi is good for $10,000.

“We’ve got a good mix of stops at traditional tour tracks and first-
time visits to Eagle and later in the sum mer at Algona (Iowa)
Raceway,” said Yoder. “We’re also looking forward to returning to
Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa for the first time since 2003. I
think the schedule is very driver friendly and I expect the 22nd

Racing fans, make your voice heard!

From Nebraska Motorplex:

The future of the I-80 corridor region is underway. Your feedback is important!

The Nebraska Innovation Zone Commission (NIZC) has embarked on the first phase of a regional comprehensive plan for the six county Omaha and Lincoln metropolitan regions (Washington, Douglas, Sarpy, Cass, Saunders and Lancaster Counties). This plan will formulate a targeted growth strategy for the region to guide development in a manner that promotes the best interests of the region and the entire State of Nebraska.

As part of the planning process, several topic specific focus groups shared their ideas for the future of the corridor. Topics included: agriculture, city interests, county interests, economic development, education, environmental protection, land interests, recreation, tourism and transportation. This survey will allow for additional input into the future of the region. (Unless otherwise specified, assume ‘area’ refers to the entire six county region.)

A drag racing facility would be an important tourism destination and entertainment venue for the state of Nebraska along this corridor. This type of facility would add greatly to the existing attractions between Lincoln and Omaha which will promote new opportunities for business and economic growth.

Please take a moment to complete this survey. Your input will be very important for the development and planning on building a Drag Racing facility along the I-80 corridor.

I-80 Speedway to be Double Sanctioned in 2008

For more information contact:

Danielle Jensen, Director of Operations and Marketing

(402) 342-3453

Greenwood, NE (December 11, 2007) – I-80 Speedway is pleased to announce a
co-sanctioning for the 2008 Season featuring seven classes of cars racing on
Sunday nights. The 4/10 mile track will continue its NASCAR Whelen All
American Series sponsorship with NASCAR Late Models, Modifieds and Pro Ams.
Joining other area tracks, I-80 Speedway will host IMCA sanctioned classes
including: IMCA Crate Late Models, Northern Sport Mods, Hobby Stocks and
Sport Compacts. The Super Late Models will be part of a Touring Late Model
Series called Spec Late Model Racing (SLMR).

The 30 date season will follow the 2007 tradition of rotating classes
running on Fridays for the first three weeks and switching to Sunday nights
for the rest of the season, giving each class a couple of weeks off
throughout the year. Last year, drivers enjoyed being able to plan vacations
with their families, or even just attending the races to watch.

This year's NASCAR Late Models will be the Grand Nationals, with a Crate
Engine option. Junction Motor Speedway will run the same division on
Saturday nights in the NWAAS, giving area drivers two tracks to chase for
state and national points within Nebraska.

"We are very excited that Junction Motor Speedway is joining the NASCAR
family," said Ed Kosiski, managing partner for Land Developers Inc. (LDI).
"This gives us an increased opportunity to have joint ventures, and to
ensure that Late Model Racing in the area is kept affordable."

The NASCAR Late Models will be the premiere division, Modifieds will be the
1st Charger Division and Pro Ams will be the 2nd Charger Division.

Monday, December 10, 2007 will go down in the history books of I-80
Speedway, as on that date an agreement was reached with IMCA to sanction
four classes. The IMCA Crate Late Model Class will be the same as the
Novice Crate Late Models in the fact there will be no age restriction. The B
Mods are now the Northern Sport Mod class, and the Pro and Novice Hornets
will now be combined to make the Sport Compact Class.

"By joining IMCA, we open up our gates to more area drivers in the Crate
Late Models, Hobby Stocks, Northern Sport Mods and Sport Compacts," said
Kosiski. "Because the rules are uniform in these classes for IMCA, drivers
will have a more fair advantage and another facility to race at."

The SLMR will race seven times at I-80 Speedway and five times at McCool
Junction Speedway. Park Jefferson Speedway in Jefferson, SD is considering
hosting two nights. Discussions with Iowa's Adams County Speedway in
Corning and Shelby County Speedway in Harlan, as well as Mid Nebraska
Speedway in Doniphan and Lincoln County Raceway in North Platte are
currently underway to add dates at these tracks for the SLMR.

Top area Late Model drivers including Kyle Berck, Mike Wiarda, Eddie Moore,
Chad Humston, Bo Eggers and Steve Kempt have committed to run in many of the
"$1200 to win" SLMR series races, when other regional touring series
schedules allow them. The total weekly payout for each night of this series
will be $7475, with a $10,000 point fund.

Information regarding IMCA Class rules can be found at www.imca.com.

NASCAR
class rules, as well as information about season passes, licenses, number
registration and schedules will be released soon. Ed Kosiski will take over
duties as managing partner for Land Developers Inc., and Danielle Jensen
will continue in her role as Director of Operations and Marketing.

Drivers, crews and fans with ideas, questions or concerns about the upcoming
year should call Ed Kosiski after 5:30 p.m. at (402) 492-3535. Ed will not
be taking phone calls between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., as he works at the
family salvage yard during that time. He also will not be answering
questions on any racing forums.

"I look forward to speaking with people directly about the 2008 season,"
said Kosiski. "The owners, as well as Danielle and I, welcome input on ideas
and would appreciate hearing from people."

Omaha 12/5/07

The shootings in Omaha hit close to home today. When I lived there this summer, I lived just a few minutes from Westroads. Why some sick individual thinks it's right, it's "stylish" (according to their note) to kill innocent people in the name of...whatever...is beyond me. These people were SHOPPING! Who cares about some class issue at an upscale department store, maybe they can afford it, maybe they were looking around, maybe they were working trying to earn an honest wage.

Nobody ever deserves to go out like that. And for many people who were there that day, saw what happened, suffered injuries or lost friends and loved ones, Christmas will always be a tragic memory to them.

I don't know if God will have mercy on this person for what he did, but I pray for mercy for those who didn't indulge in the sick luxury of suicide and must spend their time on Earth scarred by the events of today.
