A Site For all Race Fans
Former Hawkeye Racing News editor Kyle Ealy and Omaha World Herald writer Lee Ackerman have put together a collection of articles from 10, 20, even 50 years ago, presented as a "this week in history" format, along with commentary about racing's past, so it's regularly updated with "fresh" material. It's a great approach to historical information.

Look back at a big weekend
Unfortunately, the 9/11 tribute race at Butler County Motorplex got off to a wet start. I, along with several others read the message boards in disbelief when the track reported only recieving sprinkles after a line of storms went through the vicinity. But, upon arriving at the track the reports were true as we kicked up dust in the pits. The news wasn't good, as I and others stared at their smart-phones watching the impending storm moving closer. The sky darkened, drizzle, then a slow soaking rain fell on the track. BCM promoter Jacy Todd was adamant about outlasting the storm, but practicality set in and the race was postponed to Sunday afternoon.
The $5000 to win Nebraska Cup greeted 52 sprinters, with a stellar field. To give an idea of the competition: the A feature was stocked with at least 15 A feature winners/championship winners/series winners in 2009 that I could name off the top of my head. Despite the actual number being iffy - the fact that the field was packed with talent is not. Here's another tidbit, ASCS N. Plains (and soon Midwest) champion Jason Danley, four-time track champ Mike Boston, former ASCS 360 Nationals, Eagle and Knoxville track champ Billy Alley and ASCS National Tour winner and 2008 NE Cup champ Jack Dover all had to qualify through B features! Nobody "lucked" into the A.
What I love about 360's, especially the likes of Eagle and BCM is that a dry track doesn't mean lock-down to the bottom. The surface was very racy and the slide-fest back and forth battle between eventual winner Tony Bruce, Jr. and Jesse Hockett left fans agape at the action. There was plenty of action throughout the field. Like this, and this, and this, and...well, as Bruce said, "What a race, if anybody here didn't like that one, then you're not gonna like any kind of racing."
THIS event showcased what 360's are capable of on the short track and harkened back to the halcyon days of the early 2000's with 40 cars and a dozen feature winners. Yes Virgina, Santa can run a wing. More on this later.
Let it be known, I'm not just sprint-centric. The Modified feature, as it usually is at Eagle, was pretty darn good too.
Butler County didn't disappoint. A PERFECT day greeted fans and racers, a 180 from Friday. A somber tribute to 9/11 victims and first responders was brightened by the "Husker Copter" owned by Midwest Medical Transport bringing in the trophies, and a flyover by vintage aircraft. Twenty-nine strong sprints were on hand. A dry track remained racy with the sprint heats coming off without major incident.
Topless Modifieds were on hand for a $911 winner's share. I like today's IMCA Modified. But I wish they'd always run without the lid, though according to some, the setup is quite different.
Unfortunately, things were delayed after a NASTY crash in turn four when a chain of sport compacts crashed into a stopped car on the track. The wreckage took some time to clear up.
Kyle Berck took out most of the front runners at Eagle Saturday with a rare mistake, he made up for it by pulling away to take the modified feature.
The A once again, saw a dry but racy track. Much like Saturday the action was furious throughout. Chad Humston dueled pole-sitter Brian Brown briefly until establishing a comfortable lead. The show was watching Brown and Mike Boston put slide after slide on each other dueling for the runner up spot. Tony Bruce, Jr. had to qualify from the B but worked his way up the field and finished fifth.
It was some of the most intense action I'd witnessed all season.
Thumbs up:
- Roger Hadan and Jacy Todd, let's not forget: without their willingness to "go big" this weekend wouldn't have happened. Both were willing to take a risk.
- The Nebraska Cup committee, headed by Lori Dover who worked hard to generate interest in the two shows. A bounty of contingency prizes awaited drivers, many of whom came as a result of committee encouragement. The first "Miss Nebraska Cup" contest elicited huge response from the fans.
- The BCM tribute to the soldiers, fallen, and first-responders was very fitting and well done.
- The drivers and teams who decided to forgo races closer to home to make the trip up to Eagle and face the competition. Tony and Chad took the money, but the fans were the winners this week.
- Well, the fans - a late arriving crowd turned an iffy count into a respectable one at Eagle, with a solid group making the trip to the cornfields of Butler County on a Sunday night. Good attendance both nights.
- The quick-responding Butler County safety crew. They were quite literally, on top of every incident within seconds of it happening.
- Jason Danley - claiming the Midwest Region championship along with his Northern Plains title. What's impressive is that unlike a lot of "touring" series, the Midwest region had 13 of 15 scheduled events. That's a full season at some tracks.
- The push trucks. Getting a 52-car show rolling like it did is no small feat. BCM races were kicked off in no time. The bunch that pushes off in Nebraska is one of the best anywhere and they do it with only a handful of trucks.
- The decision to go topless with the Modifieds. I really like those things. Each track running mods needs to do it once. It's great to see the driver work.
- What can be done with good competition. I tire of criticism of winged sprint cars. Yes, you can get lock-down nights like the World of Outlaws. But, seeing what a strong field can do on a multi-groove track like this weekend and the earlier races at I-80 should remind fans what these are capable of, and they race like NO other class on dirt. It also confirms my preference for a dry track come feature time.
- Tony Bruce Jr. just seems like one of the most amiable, friendly but tough as nails behind the wheel kind of guys out there. Count me as a fan.
- Chad Humston and Mark Burch putting the Banana Wagon at the forefront of 360 racing again.
Thumbs down (oh come on, you expect me to be nothing but sunshine?):
- Unnecessary delays. The Miss NE Cup competition was the chunk of a 47-minute Eagle intermission. The 40+ minute Butler County break was unnecessarily long, especially since the show got started late and was started early due to the Sunday night reschedule. I understand the unforeseen delays with the opening ceremony, and the compact wreck afterward was certainly beyond control. But, the intermission was something that should have been cut given the circumstances - 10 minutes to water the track then get going. While listening to the radio I could tell 26 compacts in the A at Butler were too much and it seemed to overwhelm the scorers at times causing delays. Maybe I care too much about that stuff - but it's my site.
- Accusations of "fixing" the aforementioned pageant. The bellyaching afterward was just silly and doesn't merit any further comm....
- Sprint drivers demanding tow money. I'm sorry, but NO 360 driver merits tow money.

What's Up - What's Coming Up
much lately, then I need to explain myself.
Obviously, this site isn't my day job. My day job involves a lot of sitting
in front of a computer, and it's related to colleges. So, I've been very
busy with the ramp up of fall semester. When I get home, about the last
thing I've wanted to do is stare at a computer screen.
But, things are settling down, and I've got plenty of stuff on my mind,
including a look back at what was arguably the biggest weekend for Nebraska
sprint car racing and a piece that details some other issues I've had
regarding updates.
I'm also going to ask for some input on the future of this site.
So stay tuned.

ASCS Midwest Season Closes with a Bang This Weekend!
On Friday night, the ASCS Midwest forces invade Rising City's Butler County Motorplex for the $2,001-to-win Tribute to 9/11 "Race to Remember". Then, on Saturday night, the ASCS Midwest season championship finale takes place at Eagle Raceway's $5,000-to-win Nebraska Cup.
The lone ASCS Midwest stop of the year at both tracks, it marks the series return to the Butler County Motorplex for the first time since 2007 after a pair of tries last year were washed out. Springfield, Nebraska's Jack Dover topped last year's edition of Eagle Raceway's Nebraska Cup to put the wraps on the 2008 series title.
While a stellar field of competitors is expected for this weekend's pair of events in Cornhusker territory, Lincoln, Nebraska's Jason Danley will try to put the finishing touches on a second ASCS Regional championship for the 2009 season.
Danley finished off the ASCS Northern Plains slate at the end of July with a 33-point cushion over Sioux Falls racer Eric Lutz and carries a 100-point advantage over Giltner, Nebraska's Chad Humston into the Midwest season-ender.
Danley can safely put away the Midwest title by simply making the feature cut on both nights. However, any stumble against the stout field could open the door for Humston, who celebrates his 23rd birthday this week.
While Danley has built his advantage on the strength of seven top-ten feature runs in eleven events, Humston is one of just two drivers to post two Midwest feature wins this season along with Missouri's Brian Brown.
Humston picked off series wins at Nebraska Raceway Park's I-80 Speedway (May 21) and South Dakota's I-90 Speedway (June 26), while Brown added a win in the series most recent event at Sedalia's State Fair Speedway (August 23) to an earlier score at I-80 (July 2).
While Danley and Humston settle the top spot this weekend, Lutz enters the weekend ranked third in Midwest points with Lucas Oil Sprint Car Rookie of the Year contender Jack Dover in fourth. Two-time ASCS Northern Plains champion Lee Grosz of Harwood, ND, rounds out the current top five in ASCS Midwest points.
Friday's racing action at Butler County Motorplex goes green at 8:00 p.m., while Saturday's Nebraska Cup at Eagle Raceway fires off at 7:00 p.m.
The high-banked, 3/8-mile Butler County Motorplex clay oval is located near Rising City, NE, eight miles south of U.S. 30 on U.S. 81, then two miles east on CR 38, then 0.7 mile south on CR C, then east. For more information, contact the track at 308-940-1970.
The high-banked, 1/3-mile Eagle Raceway clay oval is located in Eagle, NE, off I-80 Exit 420, then eleven miles south on SR 63, then west. For more information, contact the track at 402-781-2243.
This weekend's Nebraska double completes a slate of 15 nights of competition for the ASCS Midwest Region at eight tracks throughout Nebraska and the surrounding areas of Missouri and South Dakota.
Thus far, 125 drivers have competed in at least one ASCS Midwest event in 2009 with nine different drivers reaching victory lane in eleven completed events. While Humston and Brown have each posted two triumphs, single wins have been recorded by Lutz, Jonathan Cornell, Billy Alley, Jesse Hockett, Shane Stewart, Bronson Maeschen and Gary Wright. Two events were rained out.
Past ASCS Midwest Winners at Butler County Motorplex:
6/15/07 – Mike Boston
7/28/06 – Garry Lee Maier
Past ASCS Midwest Winners at Eagle Raceway:
9/7/09 – Jack Dover
7/21/08 – Mike Boston
The American Sprint Car Series, in its 18th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing events, brings the best of Sprint Car racing to nearly 100 different tracks throughout 25 states and Canada in 2009. Poessenecker, Grabouski, Vrbka and Jordan win A Features at The Eagle Shootout
by Greg Soukup
The largest crowd in Eagle Raceway history was present for The Eagle
Shootout presented by Oriental Trading Company Saturday evening. A throng of
fans estimated at WELL over 10,000 filed through the gates of "America's
Home Track" to witness some of the best racing of the season. A beautiful
afternoon turned into an even better evening for racing as the track surface
improved throughout the card.
Before the races the fans were allowed to visit the pit area to obtain
autographs from the drivers, including NASCAR's Ken Schrader. They also were
treated to the sounds of "Booby Trap" who performed in the pits before and
after the races.
Heat races in all classes were run without serious incident.
After the Valentino's IMCA Hobby Stock heats were run the crowd in the
stands helped in setting a new world's record for the most whoopie cushions
sat on at one time. 8500 folks participated in the effort.
Shortly after 9:00 the first A Feature cars came out onto the high banks as
the Valentino's IMCA Hobby Stocks were the first feature. Lonnie Greten in
the 9X was the first one back to the flag stand, followed by Don Hall Jr. in
the #92, Mike Hansen's 94 and the 22JR of Dusty Poessenecker. Poessenecker
moved past Hansen on lap #2 followed by Nick Beckman who took over 4th in
the #22. Greten slowed the next time around with a flat tire, allowing Kevin
Anderson's 22K to grab the 4th position. 2 laps later Poessenecker jumped
all the way into the lead. On lap #8 Anderson advanced into the 3rd spot.
With 5 to go Anderson moved up another position to take 2nd. Hall Jr. spun
in turn 4 the next lap, allowing Anderson to take fourth and Beckman to come
up to third. Shortly after that Anderson got past Beckman and at the finish
it was Poessenecker, Anderson, Beckman and Hansen.
"First I want to thank Roger Hadan for a great night of racing. This was the
first time I've ever raced here at Eagle and I can't say enough about the
place" Dusty said. "I also need to thank my pit crew, Big Daddy Race Cars
and my wife because I couldn't win without them" he stated. Dusty's sponsors
include Dorcey Inc . Big Daddy Race Cars, D & J Machine and Jono's Race
Engines.
Dustin Andersen's 8A was in the lead at the end of the first A Main lap for
the Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds. He was followed by the 8C of Chad
Andersen, Brian Cuddly in the 57 and Clint Homan's 27. Chad Andersen grabbed
the lead on the 2nd lap and the V45 of Rik Gropp vaulted all the way up to
third. Gropp took only 2 more laps to take over 2nd from Dustin, but the
yellow flag flew when Scott Bivens' S56 stopped between turns 3 & 4. That
made the running order Chad Andersen, Dustin Andersen, Gropp and Cuddly.
Homan regained the 4th spot on lap 7 and 3 laps later Gropp again got past
Dustin for 2nd. Track modified point champion Jordan Grabouski moved around
Homan the same lap to snare the fourth position. There were 8 laps remaining
when Shane Stutzman's #22S spun in turn 4, causing the yellow to come out
again. Grabouski took advantage of the restart to get around Dustin. The
next time around Chad went very high, giving Grabouski the opening he needed
to take the lead and Gropp followed his lead by also passing Chad to grab
second. On the next circuit Doug Deterding moved up to 4th in the 13. The
final caution of the race came with 5 laps to go when Tyler Snyder's #20
spun out in turn four. The top four racers as the checkered flag flew were
Grabouski, Gropp, Chad Anderson and Doug Deterding.
Grabouski started the interview by saying "This is without a doubt the
hugest crowd that I've ever raced in front of and won in front of. I think
it made me race a little harder in fact." He continued by relating "We
downgraded in the engine department when we had to change after we lost our
main motor in the heat race, but it didn't seem to hurt us much." He
concluded by stating "We're going to be out here next week for The Nebraska
Cup to see if we can do it again". Grabouski's sponsors are Belleville
Motorsports,Twin Rivers Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge, Reedy Machine & Fab, Beatrice
Motor Mart, Redline Grafix, Sasse Farms, Vision Sports, Friend Freightways,
Novotny Construction, Booth Feed & Supply, Schmidt Machine, Side Trek Bar &
Grill, Filley Customer Powder Coating and FX Suspension.
The Auto Trans Matic IMCA Sport Compacts first lap was red flagged as a mess
was created between turns 3 & 4 after one of the cars lost a tire. Those
coming to a stop included Mary Lenz's #17, the A1 of Joe Jura, Jack Prall
IV's 45, and the 21P of Jeremy Peckham. After a complete restart Larry
Cronin's #5 led with the 95C of Bob Cigelman, Mike Simpson's 63 and the 7V
of Adam Vrbka behind him. Vrbka moved into the 3rd spot on lap #4 and the
lead changed the next circuit when Cigelman moved inside of Cronin. The
lineup was juggled again on lap 5 when Cronin again regained the lead and
Vrbka followed him into second, Simpson moved to 3rd and John Sedlachek
advanced the #93 to fourth. Simpson passed Vrbka with 4 to go, only to lose
the spot again 2 laps later when Vrbka got back around him and Sedlachek
again took over fourth. Cronin suffered a flat tire going into turn #4 on
the final lap and fell to fifth as Vrbka won, Simpson finished second,
Sedlachek took third and Cigelman settled for fourth.
"It was cool to get my third win of the season tonight. The track was really
good and it turned out just the way I like it in the feature" Adam said.
Adam's sponsors include Eagle Automotive, Big Dan's Auto Body & Paint and
Low Budget Customs.
The Budweiser 360 Sprints were the final A Main of the evening. Two
second-generation drivers help the top two position at the conclusion of the
first circuit. Jordan Boston, son of the 4-time track points champion Mike
Boston was in the lead in the #57 with Tige Jensen who is the son of sprint
racing legend Lonnie Jensen in second in the #71, John Klabunde's 77 third
and Jason Danley's 82 in fourth. Billy Alley had advanced his #22 all the
way to 13th after starting dead last, but his first time at Eagle Raceway in
quite awhile ended on lap #3 when he flipped in turn 4 after contact with
the wall. He was unhurt, but his racer was damaged too severely to continue
competing. Jensen used a slide job as the cars went into turns 1 & 2 on the
restart to momentarily snare the lead, but Boston used a crossover move to
regain the spot. The next time around Jensen made the slide job stick to put
Boston in second. The first caution of the race came out when Bobby Becker's
8B came to a stop between 3 & 4. Boston regained the lead with 12 down but
the yellow caution light was turned on when Adam Gullion's 96KX sprinter
slowed to a stop in turn 1. With 11 laps left Nick Bryan's #6 spun coming
out of turn #4 and he was sent off after he spun again in turn #4 with 10 to
go. Boston again got past Jensen on the restart but Jensen relegated him
back to second the same lap. Gullion's racer stopped again the next time
around for the final caution of the evening. With just 8 to go Boston took
the lead for good. Terry Holliman moved his #23 up to 4th with 7 laps
remaining setting up a fierce battle between his #23 and Danley. Holliman
and Danley fought tooth and nail right up to the checkered flag as Holliman
nipped him at the finish. The results showed Boston winning, Jensen second,
Klabunde third and Holliman rounding out the top 4.
Boston related "This is only my 4th time ever in a 360 sprint, but I've been
racing 600 mini-sprints for quite awhile now. In fact, I'm battling for the
track championship elsewhere and there's only 2 point separating me and
another racer. We heard that the Bogues had a car they weren't racing, so we
rented a motor for 3 nights to see if we could turn this into something for
next year". He finished by saying "I want to give a big thanks to Jeff and
Jay Bogue. I need to thank my dad, my mom and my whole family. Also my pit
crew and of course all of the fans in the stands".
Eagle Raceway's season continues Saturday September 12th as Budweiser and
Auto Trans Matic present The Nebraska Cup. Drivers from several states will
be on hand as the ASCS 360 sprints compete for $5000 to take home the A
Feature win and the non-sanctioned modifieds try to grab the winners share
of a purse that has a $1000 winner's share. The support class for the
evening will be the Auto Trans Matic IMCA Sport Compacts. The pit gate will
open to the racers at 2:00 and fans will be allowed through the front gate
at 5. Fans who show up early will be allowed into the pits from 3 until 5 to
get autographs, take pictures and even buy merchandise from the racers.
Front gate prices for adults are just $15, youngsters 6-12 are only $5 and
those 5 and under are free with an accompanying adult. Pit passes are only
$25. Come out and see some of the countries finest racers compete on the
high banks.
October 3rd will be the rescheduled Bootleggers Run Race of Champions as
several drivers from both NASCAR and Indy racing compete in Late Models.
Among those in attendance will be Casey & Roger Mears, Michael Waltrip,
Jimmy Spencer and there's rumors that a NASCAR superstar may show up also.

I-80 Season Championship Results
Greenwood, Ne., 09/06/09 It was Season Championship night at I-80 Speedway
on Sunday night with Mike Wallace winning the NASCAR Whelan Racing Series
Late Model feature, Rick Negrete winning the Pro-ams, Dylan Smith winning
the IMCA Modified feature, Jesse Sobbing winning the IMCA Sports Mod
feature, Steven Saunders winning the Crate Late Model feature and Joe Baker
winning toe Sports Compact feature. "Lightning Leon" Zeitner took the
checkers first in the Ed's SLMR class.
All championship features were started heads up by the point standings. Bill
Leighton and Mike Wallace started the Late Model feature on the front row
and Leighton jumped out front at the start. But on the back stretch Wallace
took the lead and never looked back in winning his first feature of the
year. Leighton kept going backwards and ended up in 7th place. This dealt a
huge blow to his outside chances for the NASCAR National Championship. Les
Siebert, who finished 2nd, never had a chance to close in on Wallace. Andrew
Kosiski, Todd Hipnar and Brad Soll rounded out the top 5.
The Pro-am Feature was all Rick Negrete who led wire to wire for the win and
also was crowned the track champion for 2009. Shawn Bulin won a hard fought
2nd place from Matt Boucher. Dr. Nick Steier and Chad Sanders rounded out
the top 5.
The IMCA Modified feature saw point leader Dylan Smith wire the field of 11
race cars. Jeff Jones came on to challenge Smith but was unable to pass him
using the low side of the track. Now Smith has to sit back and wait to see
how his competition does for the National Championship. Smith also won
Friday night at the Nebraska State Fair Championships and has 3 track title
at I-80, US30 and Albion.
Once again in the Sports Mod feature Jesse Sobbing was too hot to handle as
he won going away over Robert Tippery. Jim Hendricks Jr., Dennis Cook and
Joe Feyen rounded out the top 5. Sobbing also won 3 track championships at
I-80, Harlan and Des Moines, so he should be in good shape for a National
title. Hendricks is the Nebraska State Champion for IMCA.
The Crate Late Models came down to a last lap pass by Steven Saunders over
Tyler Zander. And with that win Saunders also took the track championship.
Saunders was in a borrowed car after wrecking his the week before. Lindsey
Yost, Shawn Lee and Steven Powell rounded out the top 5.
Track Point leader Pete Fink Jr. did not even compete in the season
championship Sports Compact feature which gave Jake McCloud an opening to
tie Fink for the points lead. But McCloud's early lead after the green flag
did not last long as Justin Soule passed him for the lead. And then Joe
Baker came on to challenge Soule. Baker took the lead on lap 9 and went on
to record his 1st feature win of the season.
Then it was time for the big boys in the Ed's Super Late Model Racing
Association. Veteran driver Al Humphrey took the eary lead only to lose it
on lap 2 to Jase Kaser. Kaser stayed out front til lap 13 when "Lightning
Leon" Zeitner passed him for the lead. Zeitner who said, "my car was dialed
in just right tonight" lead the rest of the way with a hard charging Mike
Wiarda taking 2nd over Kaser, Humphrey and Travis Dickes. Zeitner said now
he's even with his son Justin, who won a SLMRA race earlier in the year.
Zeitner, Robbie Andersen and Dickes won the heat races while Craig Preble
won the B-Feature.

In the Auto Trans Matic IMCA Sport Compact race there is only a 12 point

Leighton, Jones, Sobbing, Steinbach, Soule & Fink Take I-80 Features
Greenwood, Neb. (August 23, 2009) - It was Certified Transmission Fan
Appreciation night at I-80 Speedway and everyone was treated to a fantastic
night of racing as Billy Leighton Jr., Jeff Jones, Jesse Sobbing, Marty
Steinbach, Justin Soule and Pete Fink Jr. picked up wins in their respective
classes.
The NASCAR Whelen Racing Series A-Feature saw Gary Joens Jr. take the early
lead. But by the end of lap 1 Brad Soll had the lead. Leighton, who started
10th, was on the move taking 4th on lap 2, third on lap 3, second on lap 4
and finally the lead on lap 6. Leighton proceeded to distance himself from
the rest of the field and was lapping cars about midway through the 25 lap
feature. Matt Buller took over second on lap 17, but could not catch
Leighton on this night as he won his seventh feature. Clint Benson finished
third ahead of Les Siebert and Dave Doll. Heat races were won by Leighton,
Buller and Rick Vanderheiden. The B-Feature was won by Mike Wallace and then
he charged his way to a 6th place finish in the A.
The Pro-am feature was the survival of the fitest as only 7 out of 18 cars
finished the race. Chad Sanders took the early lead only to lose it on the
back straight to Shawn Bulin. Matt Boucher took the lead on lap 6 and held
it until lap 15 when he hooked the back wall and went flipping side for side
about 3 times. The car caught fire, but the flames were extinguished
shortly. Another car hit Boucher and his roll cage collapsed. But Boucher
surprisingly didn't have to take a ride to the hospital. Jeff Joldersma took
the lead for a lap and then spun out giving the lead to Steinbach. Steinbach
stays in front the rest of the way over Terry Cleveland, Ray Dessel Rick
Negrete and the "Racing MD" Nick Steier. Heat races were won by Boucher and
Greg Cooper.
The IMCA Modified feature saw Justin Wulf take the early lead and stayed
there until lap 3 when Jeff Jones took over. IMCA National Point leader
Dylan Smith was moving to the front and took second on lap 5. But on lap 8
Smith went to high in the third turn and cut down a tire bringing out the
yellow flag. His crew got the tire changed and sent him back out in 16th
spot. Jones was not to be denied though and won his second feature in as
many nights, having won at Harlan on Saturday night. Smith raced his way
back to a second place finish ahead of Dustin Andersen, Lacey Tuttle and
Johnny Saathoff. Jones and Andersen won the heat races.
The IMCA Sports Mod feature saw Brian Florian take the early lead over
Jeremy Longmeyer. Jim Hendricks Jr. moved up to second on lap 3 and waged a
spirited battle with Florian. Hendricks took the lead on lap 10 but could
not hold off Jesse Sobbing. Sobbing took the lead on the white flag lap and
picked up the win. Florian came back to finish second ahead of Hendricks,
Longmeyer and Joe Feyen. Mike Brown and Florian won the heat races.
The IMCA Sports Compacts had 30 cars, so they were split in half for two
feature event. In the first feature Garrett Rech took the early lead. But on
lap two the red flag appeared as Martin Hansen flipped his car on the back
straight. On the restart Justin Soule took the lead and then held off a fast
closing Joe Baker for the win. Rech held on for third ahead of Steve
McConnell and Nic Hitz.
The second feature belonged to point leader Pete Fink Jr. as he took the
early lead and was never challenged. second and third was a battle between
Ole Olsen and Taylor Griffin. They swapped second and third over the next
couple of laps before Griffin spunout. Officials ruled that Olsen helped him
spin and he was set back four positions for rough driving. Jake McCloud came
on to finish second ahead of Steve Neiderhaus.

Humston returning to Burch 1M in 2010
With only seven events left on the schedule for 2009, Chad Humston and the
Mark Burch Motorsports team are already looking forward to the 2010 season.
With two ASCS wins under their belt, and a couple that got away, the team is
confident heading to their next race along with doing it all over again next
year.
"This year has been a great learning experience for me." Stated the young
driver Humston. Chad definitely has turned some heads this year, but a win
at Knoxville has still eluded the team. Team owner Mark Burch: "Knoxville
is one of the toughest places to win one race, let alone win consistently.
It just goes to show you the level of competition, along with the technical
aspect at those speeds, how tough it really is. We still have work to do in
many areas to improve there," added Burch.
Marvin Brees continues to be the driving force in our shop and at the track.
His efforts are unmatched and his dedication unparalleled. He is truly the
backbone of our organization. Dan Humston will also be returning as Vice
President of corporate operations, another vital part of our team.
Humston finished out the ASCS Northern Plains points in 3rd place after
missing one event due to a weekly Knoxville show. Chad is currently second
in ASCS Midwest points and ninth in Knoxville 360 points.
Mark Burch sums it all up: "None of this would be possible without the
support of our families and sponsors. We are all looking forward to
building those relationships and commitments in 2010. Having Chad back
behind the wheel again gives us that consistency that is so important. This
sport, like anything you do is all about the people. We have great people
involved with us on every level from the track to the truck! We are looking
forward to finishing out strong this season and returning to Knoxville in
2010."

Sprint Bandits TNT Ignites on Sunday!
just one week away. Each year, somewhere right around the middle of August,
the nation's top wingless Sprint Car drivers converge upon the nation's
mid-section for a full week of Sprint Bandits Tour 'N Topless competition.
This year is no different, with the exception that the wingless wars get
under way one night earlier with a Sunday night event (August 16) marking
the first of six nights of racing over a span of seven days.
A multitude of drivers hailing from the Hoosier State of Indiana and
surrounding "traditional" areas will take on the best the West can offer
atop a handful of tracks throughout Iowa, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Kansas that
only host the top wingless forces once a year, offering up some neutral turn
to determine the best of the best.
Indiana's Dave Darland is the reigning Sprint Bandits TNT champion after
posting five podium finishes in six events last year, including his second
consecutive series triumph at Nebraska Raceway Park's I-80 Speedway.
While Darland's consistency netted the title, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma's Brady
Bacon and California's Robert Ballou combined to win five of the six
features last August. Bacon, 18 years old at the time, strung together the
initial three wingless 410-ci Sprint Car wins of his career, while Ballou
topped Lakeside Speedway's $10,000-to-win wingless classic for the second
year in a row.
While Darland is the reigning TNT champion, Robert Ballou and Tim Kaeding
tied for top TNT Midwest Swing honors in 2007, Missouri's Jesse Hockett
earned the top spot in 2006 and Illinois' Levi Jones captured the inaugural
TNT championship in 2005.
This year's TNT swing opens at a new venue with Rapid Speedway in Rock
Rapids, IA, hosting the series on Sunday night, August 16. The following
night, it's on to Nebraska Raceway Park's I-80 Speedway for the Fifth Annual
TNT Husker Nationals.
After a travel day on Tuesday, action resumes at Oklahoma City's State Fair
Speedway on Wednesday, August 19, before moving up the Turner Turnpike to
Creek County Speedway near Tulsa on Thursday. The week then concludes with
the traditional $10,000-to-win two-night stand at Lakeside Speedway in
Kansas City, KS, on August 21-22.
Round One – Rapid Speedway (Rock Rapids, IA)
When: Sunday, August 16

Tama St. (at the Lyons Co. Fairgrounds)
Race Time: 8:00 p.m.
Track Phone: 712-472-3742
Notes: Just a stone's throw or two from Sioux Falls, SD, Rock Rapids
Speedway hosts the Sprint Bandits TNT for the first time with the opening
round of 2009.
Round Two – I-80 Speedway (Greenwood, NE)
When: Monday, August 17
Description: 4/10-mile semi-banked dirt oval

Notes: Annually the site of some of the most intense TNT racing of the week,
I-80 Speedway hosts the Fifth Annual TNT Husker Nationals on a Monday night
this year. Levi Jones topped an action-packed 2005 TNT feature, Robert
Ballou shocked the world with his first wingless win in 2006, Dave Darland
gave the Trucker's Team their first TNT win when he nipped Tim Kaeding at
the line by 0.052 seconds in 2007 and then backed it up with a repeat I-80
win aboard Scott Benic's entry last year.
Round Three – State Fair Speedway (Oklahoma City, OK)
When: Wednesday, August 19
Description: 3/8-mile slightly-banked clay oval
Location: At the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds near the intersection of N.W.

Eagle Raceway: Scout night wins go to Beckman, Grabouski, Danley and Boston
August 9th, 2009 - The hottest temperatures this year kept a few fans from
attending Scout Night, presented by Speedway Motors Saturday night at
"America's Home Track" Eagle Raceway. But the racing was even hotter on a
track that was racy throughout the evening's events. Several cars from the
GOTRA (Good Old Time Racing Association) were on display and also ran some
hot laps as a demonstration of part of what the fans will see next weekend.
All heat races were run with only a minor incident in the 2nd Budweiser 360
Sprint Heat. Terry Holliman's #23 slid up the track as he attempted to pass
the 33 of Terry Cadwallader. The two cars made contact, sending
Cadwallader's sprint into the turn 4 wall ending his night.
At intermission any youngster 12 and under who wanted was given a ride
around the track in the very race cars that were competing at Eagle. The
line was quite long, but the smiles on the kids' faces showed that they
thought it was well worth the wait.
Mark McKinney's #23 was first back to the flag stand on lap 1 of the
Valentino's IMCA Hobby Stock A Feature and had Earl Schmitt's 70, the 32 of
Joe Ryan and Chad Fegley in the 77F close behind. The second lap saw Fegley
and Nick Beckman in the 22 pass Ryan for third and fourth. Fegley took only
2 laps to grab second from Schmitt and then 1 more to grab the lead from
McKinney. On lap 6 Beckman moved up to third past Schmitt only to have the
53 of Don Kross spin out in turn 2. Kross retired to the pits and Beckman
moved back to fourth. Beckman wasn't going to be satisfied with fourth
however and grabbed third on the restart lap and then got around McKinney
for second the next time around. With 6 laps left Fegley slipped in turn 2,
allowing Beckman to take over 1st. That same lap RJ Macku vaulted all the
way into the third position. Fegley made a valiant effort to retake the lead
on the last lap, even coming alongside Beckman but he had to settle for the
runner-up spot. The top four were Beckman, Fegley, Macku and McKinney.
"It's been so long since I won here, and it feels so good to finally win
again. I really didn't think it was going to happen again this year, but I
somehow managed to do it. We've really been having a rough last few weeks"
Beckman said. Nick's sponsors are Kevin & Brie Mosier, Athey Painting,
Centerfield Construction, Miller Custom Cabinets, Terry's Body Shop & Sales,
Scott's Auto Detailing, Ramos Pizza & Buster's BBQ, Kadavy Restoration,
Dicky & Burham, Shepard Motorsports and Speedy Steve's.
Next up for their A Main were the Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds. Tim
Pickens held first after lap 1 in his 00 with the 4T of Jerry Trejo, Jan
Korth's 42K and the 81 of Mike Densberger rounding out the top 4. Lap 2 saw
Densberger take third from Korth with Doug Deterding also passing Korth the
next lap. Densberger spun in turns 3 & 4 on lap 5, collecting Ed Raines'
11AA and the 3W of Stacey Wilhelm. Also stopping were the 95 of Dylan Smith
and the S56 of Scott Bivens who were forced to start at the rear as Raines'
racer was hauled to the pits with severe damage to the right front. The
running order at the time was Pickens, Trejo, Deterding and the 21H of Shane
Hiatt. Trejo went extremely high on the restart falling back to the fourth
position as Deterding and Hiatt both advanced. Bob Zoubek brought his #5S to
fourth behind Jordan Grabouski's 30 who grabbed third with 10 to go and the
next lap he moved to second past Grabouski and Deterding and then to the
lead past Pickens, only to have Densberger and the 8J of Joe Borer both spin
in turn 4. At that point Pickens, Deterding, Jordan Grabouski and Zoubek
were the top 4. Grabouski and Zoubek used the restart lap to move to 2nd and
3rd. Grabouski got around Pickens with 7 laps left and Zoubek took second
from Pickens the next time around. Trejo spun out with 5 laps remaining to
bring out the final caution flag of the race. Dylan Smith, who held the
National IMCA Modified point lead going into the evening slid to a stop at
the entrance to the pits with 3 to go and was towed to the pits with
steering damage. The last lap saw John Saathoff's 96J moved all the way to
third. Grabouski held on for the win followed by Zoubek, Saathoff and
Pickens.
"It's always great to win here at Eagle with the tough competition. I want
to thank Bob Zoubek for racing me clean, because that's what makes racing
fun. Hopefully we can stay in the top four in points the rest of the year"
Jordan stated. He concluded by saying "I want to thank my car owners, Ben &
Melissa Novotny and also Darcy". Grabouski's sponsors are Belleville
Motorsports,Twin Rivers Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge, Reedy Machine & Fab, Beatrice
Motor Mart, Redline Grafix, Sasse Farms, Vision Sports, Friend Freightways,
Novotny Construction, Booth Feed & Supply, Schmidt Machine, Side Trek Bar &
Grill, Filley Customer Powder Coating and FX Suspension.
The Auto Trans Matic IMCA Sport Compacts then ran their A Feature. Melissa
Cronin's 5M, the 4X of Chad Bassinger, Larry Cronin's 5 and the 29 of Matt
Moyer were the first four to complete a lap. The 5 got loose on lap 2,
allowing both Moyer and the 7V of Adam Vrbka to pass him. Moyer grabbed the
second spot on lap 4 with the 16T of Tyler Saathoff taking over third and
Joey Danley taking fourth in his #14. Moyer took the lead from Melissa
Cronin with 9 laps remaining, but lost a tire in turn 3 and rolled in turn
4. Melissa also had suffered a flat tire and went to the pits for repairs.
After Saathoff had stopped short of the incident Adam Vrbka made extremely
hard contact with him and both cars went to the pits. As the field took the
green flag again it was Danley, the 55 of Garrett Rech, Jack Prall IV's 45
and the 93 of John Sedlachek in the top four. Rech snared the lead from
Danley with a pass to the inside with 2 to go, but Danley returned the favor
on the last lap to preserve the win. Rech, Prall IV and Sedlachek were the
other racers going to the tech area.
"The track was really smooth tonight, and after the first four cars dropped
out it made it easy to win" Joey stated. He finished the interview by saying
"I want to thank my Dad and Tim Horsham and of course my crew Kyle, Andrew
and Dane".
The Budweiser 360 Sprints concluded the A Mains for the evening's racing.
Ryan Kitchen's 21 held the first circuit lead followed by Mark Schmidt's 9j,
Bobby Becker's 8B and the X29 of Roger Sluka. Becker and Sluka both passed
Schmidt on lap 2 and Gage Dorr's 17 also got past Schmidt on lap 3 to take
fourth. Becker's night came to a premature halt as he lost his right rear
wheel in turns 1 & 2 when the center broke out of it. Rocky Klabunde spun
the #28 out in turn 3 on the restart to cause the caution lights to come on
again. When the green flag waved Adam Gullion moved his #96KX up to the
third spot, only to have his motor let go with 19 laps left, sending him to
the infield. That put Mike Boston's 88 in third. Boston moved up to 2nd with
16 to go. 11 laps remained when Trevor Grossenbacher advanced his #35AB to
fourth. Boston took over the lead with 9 laps to go and held on for the win.
The only other position change in the top 4 came on the last lap as John
Klabunde garnered a front stretch inspection by taking fourth.
Mike related "Roger and the track prep crew need to be applauded for doing
such a great job with the track tonight. Whenever you are still throwing mud
at the end of the last A and there's lots of passing lanes on a windy day
over 100 degrees, it makes for a great race for the fans". "I want to thank
everyone who makes it possible for me to race here every week; Rick and
Michelle Bowers my car owners, the Zoz family for these great motors and of
course my sponsors" he finished. Mike's sponsors include Trackside Bar and
Grill, E & K Drywall and Eckley Racing Engines.
Next week's event will be "Mod Madness" on August 15th. The Budweiser 360
sprints will take a week off to allow the teams and their fans the
opportunity to attend racing elsewhere, but there will still be plenty of
racing and excitement to see. The Monster Energy Drink IMCA Modifieds will
be joined by the IMCA Sport Modifieds, the Valentino's IMCA Hobby Stocks and
the Auto Trans Matic IMCA Sport Compacts. The Good Old Time Racing
Association (GOTRA) will return to Eagle to race also, and local racing
legend Bill Wrich will have his vintage #16 race car on hand. Kids, don't
forget to bring your water guns so that you can take part in "Water Wars"
against the racers.
August 22nd will be McDonalds Junior Fan Club Night, with a money grab for
the youngsters at intermission.
August 29th will be the season points finale, sponsored by Jack Daniels.
Don't forget to mark Saturday September 12th on your calendar as Eagle
Raceway "America's Home Track" presents The Nebraska Cup featuring the 360
Sprints vying for $5000 to win, the A Modifieds compete for $1000 to win and
the Auto Trans Matic IMCA Sport Compacts as the support class. For details,

October 3rd is the rescheduled date for the Bootleggers Run Race of
Champions. Racing celebrities Roger & Kasey Mears, Jimmy Spencer and Michael
Waltrip will be racing along with an unnamed NASCAR driver to be announced
later.

Random Bits
- Congratulations to Mike Boston on his 2009 Eagle Sprint Championship. What? Do the math...Mike would have to get hit by a bus, kidnapped by pirates or vanish into a black hole - THIS WEEK, to not win. A green flag in the A feature anytime in the last three races guarantees it. Taking a green in a heat only would require a miracle to beat him. Second place Nick Clifford must win the last three A features, in a row (his first three to boot) to even have that minuscule chance if Boston takes a green and runs dead last in a 24 car 360 Sprint A (which hasn't taken place in recent memory) or fails to make the A. Don't talk about mathematical possibility, I'll take Boston over your mathematical possibilities and give you 10 to 1. I'll give you 1000 to 1... Stick a fork in it, it's done.
- With that in mind, will Boston forgo this week's racing for the possibility of a Knoxville 360 Nationals title? Probably not as he said during his post-race interview that their luck on big tracks left something to be desired. I don't know if he'll finish out the season at Eagle, but I've always had respect for drivers who still give it their all (or at least show up) even when they have the title locked up.
- I-80 Speedway, according to a quote in the Lincoln Journal Star is having its best year ever under the current ownership. I have no reason to think otherwise, with specials such as the free admission night, Nitro Circus and Midwest Tri-Fecta adding plenty to the track's coffers. Interesting how in these down times, the realization that there's some good entertainment out there for cheap is bringing the fans in. Who would think that (last paragraph)?
- Earlier this week I made the trip out to Junction Motor Speedway for the "alphabet soup-" sanctioned Cornhusker Midget Classic. Most of the big dogs were in attendance as Brady Bacon dueled with Brad Loyet throughout the latter half of the A feature with Bacon finally pulling away by just enough as the Loyet's high line faded away. It was an unseasonably cool night and any plans I had for Wednesday's finale were squashed by a splitting, cold-related headache that I still have remnants of even this week. Brad Kuhn of Avon, IL topped the field on Wednesday to take home the Crystal & Chrome trophy.
- The fact that so many sanctions teamed up together for the show is a great example of cooperation. It's also a great example of necessity. The Belleville Midget Nationals, once the premier Midget event saw car counts under 40 on the final night. The scary-fast 5/8 mile oval has been criticized for being just too much on motors. I agree. Midget purists and those who hold the speedway dear will violently disagree, but the race is an anachronism. The biggest midget race, in cars and crowd is the January Chili Bowl in Tulsa, OK, and has been for quite some time. Numbers don't lie.
The (outdoor) midget nationals need to be moved up north - any of the three tracks in SE Nebraska along or near I-80 will do, the track off Hwy 77 will do as well. You could include Butler County if they had a couple thousand more seats (to seat ticket buying people to pay for the show), bigger parking and pits, a paved road to HWY 81 and more hotel space in Columbus. These aren't digs on anyone, just facts. But the racing at BCM has been great.
- You never pick on Eagle! Oh bulls**t. But in case you don't want to click on the archives, here goes: I agree with the message board posters: please, please, please...the Bootlegger's Run has been rescheduled. The rescheduled date is on your own website. Please change the opening news item to something like...the Nebraska Cup?
- I hope the Nebraska Cup is a smashing success and becomes Eagle's showcase event. Why? The once semi-prestigious "Eagle Nationals featuring the World of Outlaws" ® TM, etc. have become merely another race on the World of Outlaws infinite schedule and really means nothing. Crowds are "good" at best. If Roger dropped it, I wouldn't like it, I'd miss it, but I'd could give him the benefit of the doubt for letting it go. But, I would like to see a show that features a class, synonymous with many of Nebraska racing legends - that is - Sprint Cars. Yeah, I like sprint cars, so what? I spent my summers around them for 20 years! Anyone that would spend all their formative years around something either likes it a lot, or never wants to see it again. This site alone should tell you how I feel.
I would like to see a race that means something to a still vocal and loyal group of race fans around here. It may end up being a $5000 payday to some ASCS hotshot, but I think the locals have more than a fighting chance - unlike the June Eagle "Nationals." All told, I hope that the support is more than recent iterations of the Neb. Cup, or the short-lived Backrow Challenge. I think though that the late-season, BIG money nature of the show will be a bigger draw...it has done well in before, especially during less affluent times when bang for the buck counted. I-80 seems to have something with their Alphabet Soup - essentially a local show with outside flavor mixed in since most of the racers also make regular if not weekly appearances there. JMS is starting to build a foundation on its Cornhusker Classic Midget show (though it isn't local) and it's "Cool McCool 100" (local). Eagle needs a new signature event.
- Nicey nice time. What can be said about Rhonda Bryan's kid's night promotion that hasn't been said already? Look at the stands to see what can be accomplished by the racing participants, fans and tracks when they band together in a common effort. Yeah, maybe there were people there only hoping to get free bikes - but they paid their $10 bucks and maybe you had more than a few converted fans in the process.
Props to the crew spearheaded by Lori Dover to promote and raise some public interest in the upcoming ASCS 9/11 tribute race at Butler Co. and the NE Cup. It could be a great weekend for Sprint fans and ANOTHER good example of what the racing community can do to promote itself.
- I'm likely home-bound this weekend. With temps forecast to be in the upper 90's...can't say I mind, but I had given my wife the idea I was staying home last week and went out to test drive the new camera. Given the upcoming flurry of events in the next few weeks, I'm planning to bank some good karma at home.
- The future! I'm starting to get plans together to change this site up a bit if not move on to something different. In the past few weeks I've done some soul-searching, some discussion and some analysis and determined that trying to be all things to all people maybe isn't the best solution. As the saying goes, "if you try to please everyone, nobody will like it." Things will remain status quo for the time being - but I'm about 85% sure that my focus will change for 2010.
IMCA Modified Point Leader Dylan Smith Wins Again At I-80
(Greenwood, Ne., 08/04/09) It was the first ever 2 Buck Tuesday at I-80
Speedway and IMCA Modified National Point Leader Dylan Smith picked up
another feature win.
Stacey Wilhelm got a great jump to the early lead of the 18 lap feature
event with Johnny "The Jet" Saathoff and Ricky "The Racer" Stephan in 2nd
and 3rd. Smith, who started 7th, was up to 2nd on lap 6 and took the lead on
lap 7. But Jeff Jones was the driver who stepped up to the plate to
challenge for the lead after taking 2nd on lap 10. A yellow flag with 3 laps
left tightened things up. On the restart Smith went to the bottom of the
track, where Jones was gaining on him and managed to hold him off for the
win. Wilhelm, Saathoff and Randy Foote rounded out the top 5. Wilhelm and
Smith won the heat races.
The SportMods saw a massive pileup coming to the flagstand on the opening
lap. This sent Jim Hendricks, Jason Fusselman and Bret Sheppard to the pits.
But Jesse Sobbing changed a tire and restarted at the tail end. Buddy Ray
Jones took the early lead. But on lap 2 he spun out in turn 4 giving the
lead to Laini Schwartz. Hank Dewild took the lead on lap 3 and held it until
lap 8 when he himself spun out in turn 2. This gave the lead to Joe Feyen.
But Sobbing was a man on a mission moving into 3rd on lap 8, second on lap 9
and taking the lead on lap 10. Sobbing went on to record his 6th win in his
rookie year in the class. Dennis Cook came on to finish 2nd ahead of Feyen.
Robert Tippery and Brian Kosiski rounded out the top 5. Sobbing is currently
2nd in Northern Region points.
The Crate Late Model feature saw Mike Morton Jr. lead from start to finish.
But Lindsey Yost made it interesting on the last lap as she tried to make
the pass for the win. But Morton held his ground and picked up his 3rd win
of the year. Yost won the heat race.
The Sports Compact feature was a family feud between the Fink Brothers, Alex
and Pete, Jr. Pete took the lead early from Kevin Zeitner and looked like
he would get the win. But Alex had other ideas and passed his brother with 2
laps left and went on to record the win. Ole Olson, Jake McCloud and Joe
Baker rounded out the top 5.
The Hobby Stocks made their first appearance of the year at I-80 and 19
signed in to do battle. Walnut, Iowa's Kurt Hansen took the early lead but
was immediately challenged by Adam Armstrong. Hansen and Armstrong battled
side by side until lap 5 when Armstrong took the lead. Tom Myers came on to
challenge for the lead in the closing laps but could not get the job done.
Hansen finished 3rd ahead of Blain Petersen.

19th Annual ASCS Knoxville Nationals This Weekend
The three-night Lucas Oil Sprint Car Series presented by K&N Filters event, including full preliminary cards on Thursday and Friday followed by Saturday night's championship feature events, has already attracted 116 entries from 22 different states as well as Australia and Canada.
With nearly $100,000 in purse money to be doled out over the weekend, Saturday's $10,000 to win main event will be third of five Lucas Oil Sprint Car features to pony up $10K or more for the winner over the course of the 2009 season.
Jack Dover pocketed $10,000 at the Jetmore Motorplex' Steve King Memorial on May 24, while Travis Rilat collected $10,092 in the Third Annual Fred Brownfield Memorial at Washington's Grays Harbor Raceway on July 18.
After Saturday night's $10,000-to-win tilt at Knoxville, a season-high $15,000 awaits the winner of I-30 Speedway's 22nd Annual Short Track Nationals in Little Rock, AR, on October 31, with another $10,000 winner's share to complete the season at USA Raceway's 42nd Annual Western World Championships on November 21.
Among the current 116 entries for the 19th Annual ASCS Knoxville Nationals are all 17 drivers that have competed in each Lucas Oil Sprint Car Series event thus far in 2009, including current points leader and reigning champion Jason Johnson of Eunice, LA. The lone representative from Louisiana, an ASCS Knoxville Nationals title is about the only premier event missing from the "Ragin' Cajun's" resume.
Oklahoma's Shane Stewart, an ASCS Knoxville Nationals winner in 2007, is just 26 points off Johnson's lead pace in the $60,000 championship chase, with 1998 Knoxville winner Gary Wright of Hooks, TX, 54 points out of the lead in third.
Other Lucas Oil Sprint Car title contenders include Travis Rilat (Forney, TX), Tim Crawley (Benton, AR), Paul McMahan (Hendersonville, TN), Tony Bruce, Jr. (Liberal, KS), Danny Wood (Norman, OK), Jack Dover (Springfield, NE), Jesse Hockett (Warsaw, MO), Sean McClelland (Tulsa, OK), Gary Taylor (Snohomish, WA), Kenneth Walker (Sapulpa, OK), Darren Long (Elida, OH), Chad Corken (Highlands Ranch, CO), Seth Bergman (Snohomish, WA) and Gavin Punch (Collinsville, OK).
A half-dozen past ASCS Knoxville Nationals winners are among the current entries, including two-time winners Wayne Johnson, Billy Alley, Dennis Moore, Jr., Terry McCarl and Garry Lee Maier along with Shane Stewart.
Wayne Johnson captured his second ASCS Knoxville Nationals title last year by besting a field of 111 competitors.
All three nights of the 19th Annual ASCS Knoxville Nationals competition will be taped for later broadcast on the VERSUS Network.

Eagle: Fegley, Grabouski, Noonan and Boston win at Fan Appreciation Night II
August 2nd, 2009 - The second Fan Appreciation Night of the season was
brought to "America's Home Track" Eagle Raceway Saturday night by the
Nebraska Lottery. A nearly cloudless sky and unseasonably cool temperatures
greeted a near capacity crowd, and set the stage for a heavy, very fast
track.
The only incident in the preliminary events occured as the Budweiser 360
Sprints were running their buzz laps prior to the second heat. As Terry
Holliman brought his #23 sprinter into turn 1 he hooked a rut with his right
rear tire, sending his racer bouncing and eventually flipping through turns
1 and 2. His car was damaged significantly enough that Terry's evening was
over before it really got started.
The Valentino's IMCA Hobby Stocks were the first one to compete in an A
Feature. Chad Fegley's 77F was first back to the flag stand on lap 1,
followed by the 23 of Mark McKinney, Justin Busboom's 62 and the 33 of Eric
Hanson. Hanson advanced to third on the 4th lap, and Busboom also was passed
on lap 6 by RJ Macku's 1R. The top four spots remained unchanged, with spots
2 through 4 being fought for tooth and nail for several laps. As the race
drew to a close Nick Beckman spun his #22 in turn four and the yellow flag
flew. On the restart lap defending track champion Kevin Anderson moved his
22K past Macku to grab fourth. Hanson took second from McKinney with just 2
laps left as Macku regained 4th. Fegley was unchallenged throughout the
contest, pulling away at times to a nearly straightaway lead at times.
Second through 4th positions were Hanson, McKinney and Macku.
"I had planned to bring my sprint car out tonight, but after Tadd's accident
last week I decided to wait until Larry Pinegar could drive it for me. That
gave me time to concentrate on my hobby stock. We've been changing things
every week to try and get the car feeling better for me, and it seems like
we finally did it. Now I need to be able to win from mid-pack" Fegley said.
He added "I need to thank Keith Dragoo and my wife and kids". Chad's
sponsors include Big Johnson Chassis, Red Robin, The Shop Inc. and Velocity
Indoor Karting.
The #73 of James Oaks led the first lap of the Monster Energy Drink IMCA
Modified A Main. The 19 of Scott Anderson, Dan Nelson's 94 and Mike
Densberger's 81 held the second through fourth positions. On lap 2 Anderson,
Nelson and Densberger all passed Oaks and the following lap Densberger spun
to the infield on the backstretch. That allowed the 8J of Joe Borer to move
into the top 4. On the restart attempt Oaks spun in turns 1 and 2, moving
the 5S of Bob Zoubek up to fourth. Nelson moved past Anderson as the green
flag flew again, and the next time around Zoubek snared third. On the fourth
lap Dustin Anderson lost the driveshaft from the 8A at the entrance to turn
three, bringing the yellow out again. On the restart lap Borer moved into
second and the 7 of Bob Ruisinger advanced first to fourth and then to
third. Points leader Jordan Grabouski moved into the top four during the
next circuit. Shortly after that, more debris was spotted in turn four,
slowing the cars under caution yet again. That moved Grabouski back to fifth
and Anderson back to fourth. Grabouski again got around Anderson on the
restart. Clint Hummer's 41 caused the next caution as he spun in turns 1 & 2
the following lap. The running order at that time was Nelson, Borer,
Ruisinger, Grabouski and the 95 of Dylan Smith. Grabouski moved up two spots
on the restart lap. Smith got past Ruisinger with 12 laps left, but was
moved back as Densberger spun again in turns 3 & 4. Grabouski snagged the
lead for good as the green lights were turned on again. Smith leap-frogged 2
spots to grab third the next lap. The yellow came out one last time on the
next circuit as a car spun to the infield on the front stretch. Doug
Deterding moved his #13 up to the fourth position on the restart lap, only
to lose the spot to the 96J of Johnny Saathoff with 6 to go. The race
finished under green as Grabouski was the winner with Nelson, Smith and
Saathoff behind him.
"It feels really good to win at one of the toughest places to compete that I
ever raced at. And it's great to do it on Fan Appreciation Night. It's so
cool to the the stands packed like they were tonight" Jordan stated. He
finished by saying "I want to say thanks to all the people who help me out.
We couldn't do it without them, especially my car owners Ben & Melissa
Novotny". Jordan's sponsors include Belleville Motorsports,Twin Rivers
Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge, Reedy Machine & Fab, Beatrice Motor Mart, Redline
Grafix, Sasse Farms, Vision Sports, Friend Freightways, Novotny
Construction, Booth Feed & Supply, Schmidt Machine, Side Trek Bar & Grill,
Filley Customer Powder Coating and FX Suspension.
The initial attempt at a start for the Auto Trans Matic IMCA Sport Compact
Feature was called off when point leader Joey Danley lost the right rear
tire from the #14. When the cars finally completed an official lap Melissa
Cronin's #5M held the point with Trevor Noonan's 66, Tyler Saathoff's 16T
and the 21T of Brandon Thornton. John Irvine's 97 took fourth from Thornton
on lap 3 as Noonan moved even with Cronin. The two battled back and forth
until with 8 to go Noonan lost a tire in turn 1, coming to a rest against
the wall in turn 2. The 45P of Jack Prall IV was collected in the incident
and also was forced to drop from the race. That made the running order
Cronin, Saathoff, Irvine and the 33 of Jeremy Noonan. Shortly after that
Satthoff and Irvine got together, bringing the caution flag out. That moved
Noonan into second, Thornton into third and Garrett Rech's 55 in fourth.
With just 4 laps left Noonan edged out Cronin, setting up one of the best
races of the year so far. The two of them were either door to door, or were
swapping first place by inches. As the checkered flag flew Noonan held the
lead with Cronin, Rech and Thornton in second through fourth.
"That was one of the biggest fights I've ever had" Noonan said. "I just kept
trying my hardest and finally got the win. I want to dedicate this win to
Grandma Deanna Ferguson" he stated. Jeremy finished the interview by saying
" I want to thank my parents, my pit crew and my girlfriend Keri". Jeremy's
sponsors include Ron Fox & Sons Service, Nebraska Machine & Tool, Tracy's
Collision Center, Longoria's MMA Academy and Suds & Scissors.
Nick Bryan's #6 led the final A Feature of the night, which was for the
Budweiser 360 sprints, followed by the 11E of Ian Eastman, Bobby Becker in
the 8B and the X29 of Roger Sluka. Two-time defending track champion and
current points leader Mike Boston had advanced from his starting position
near the back of the field on lap three to pass Sluka and then Becker to
move into third. The 99C of Nick Clifford flipped on the front stretch on
lap 5 and the red flag was displayed. Clifford was alright and his car was
pushed to the pits so that repairs could be attempted. Unfortunately the
damage was severe enough that he could not continue. When the green flag
flew Boston and Becker both advanced a position to snag 2nd and 3rd. Adam
Gullion brought his 96aKX to fourth the next time around as Boston took the
lead from Bryan. There were only 9 laps left when Becker also moved past
Bryan who spun three laps later, moving the 14 of Gene Acklund to fourth. As
the yellow flag was placed back in it's stand Dean Chadd spun the #33
completely around which resulted in a caution although he managed to keep
the engine fired and drive away. Mitchell Moore took the fourth position
from Gullion who had gone extremely high in turn four and Gullion dropped to
sixth. The final caution of the evening came out the next time around as
Jeff Lowery's steering failed on his #45. From there the race was run under
green as Boston won, Becker finished second, Moore placed third and Gene
Acklund was fourth.
Boston began his interview by stating "The car was good tonight. The problem
with a heavy, narrow track like this is that everyone's fast". He continued
with "We changed gears before the feature, and that was the difference for
us. I also got a couple of lucky breaks while I was moving up". His
concluding words were "I want to finally thank the Zoz family, who own my
motors". Mike's sponsors include Trackside Bar and Grill, E & K Drywall and
Eckley Racing Engines.
Next Saturday night will be Scout Night, presented by Speedway Motors. All
scouts will receive free front gate admission if they are wearing their
scouting uniform. The evening will feature kid's car rides during
intermission. The scouts will be able to camp out all night at the track,
but all children must be accompanied by an adult. It will also be Driver
Appreciation Night. Pit gates open at 4 and front gates open at 5:30.
Keep the 12th of September open as Eagle Raceway presents The Nebraska Cup
featuring the local 360 sprint drivers competing against the best in the
country for $5000 to win the ASCS A Feature and the Modified drivers vie for
$1000 to win their feature. The support class will be the Sport Compacts.
Front gate admission will be just $15 for this huge show.
