The Midwest Tri-Fecta: Sprint Cars, Super Late Models and A Mods

One of the most anticipated races of the season is coming to I-80 Speedway on Friday, July 1. The Midwest Tri-Fecta brings together Super Late Models, ASCS Midwest Sprints and A Mods. The Super Late Models will be racing for $3,000 to win and will be sanctioned by the Corn Belt Clash (CBC), Lucas Oil Midwest Late Model Racing Association (MLRA) and the National Championship Racing Association (NCRA).

For the Super Late Models it will be another chance to earn a starting spot in the upcoming Silver Dollar Nationals. The Silver Dollar Nationals (SDN) to be held at I-80 on July 21-23 pays $25,000 to win and $1,000 to start. The winner of the SLM portion of the Midwest Tri-Fecta will earn a guaranteed starting spot in the SDN. Brad Looney of Republic, Missouri earned a guaranteed starting spot by winning the Spring Meltdown in April and Chad Simpson of Mt. Vernon, Iowa got his free pass to the SDN by winning the Alphabet Soup Race on May 29. Terry Phillips of Springfield, Missouri is the defending late model champion of the Midwest Tri-Fecta.

Chad Simpson of Mt. Vernon, Iowa leads the CBC point standings followed by Chris Simpson, Tim Isenberg, Denny Eckrich and Jason Rauen. Al Purkey of Coffeyville, Kansas leads both the MLRA & NCRA point standings. In the MLRA he is followed by Kyle Berck, John Anderson, Jesse Stovall and Terry Phillips. In the NCRA following Purkey in points are Corey Zeitner, Dean Moore, Joe Kosiski and Steve Kempt.

The ASCS Midwest Sprint Car Series will be making their fourth appearance of the year at I-80 Speedway with $3,000 going to the winner. Brian Brown of Grain Valley, Missouri has registered two wins this year at I-80 and is the defending champion of the Midwest Tri-Fecta. Seth Bergmann of Snohomish, Washington won the other ASCS event. Wayne Johnson of Oklahoma City is the current ASCS Midwest point leader. He is followed by Jack Dover, Brian Brown, Jordan Boston and Bryan Gossel.

The A Mods will be making their third appearance of the year at I-80 with the winner picking up $2,000. Jake Neal of Ft. Calhoun and Kyle Berck of Marquette have won the previous A Mod features at I-80 this year. Entry fee is $20.

Finally a lucky fan will have a chance to win $1,000 by picking the winner of all 3 features. A tie-breaker will be used to decide the winner. All entries must be turned in by Intermission. Winner will be notified by July 7, 2011. Pit gate opens at 3 pm, Grandstands open at 5:30 pm with racing at 7 pm. Grandstand Admission is $20 for Adults, Juniors (6-15) $5 with Kids 5 and Under Free. I-80 Alphabet Soup Race May 29

A Memorial Day weekend staple returns to I-80 Speedway on Sunday, May 29 with the running of the annual Alphabet Soup Race. This year’s soup is a mixture of CBC (Corn Belt Clash), MLRA (Midwest Late Model Racing Association), and NCRA (National Championship Racing Association). The 50 lap feature will pay $5,000 to win.
The winner of the soup race will receive a provisional into I-80 Speedway’s Silver Dollar Nationals. If that driver qualifies for the SDN through the heat or last chance races of the SDN, (earning a higher starting spot in the SDN), then the highest finisher of the Soup race not qualified for the SDN will receive the provisional from the Soup race and a guaranteed starting spot in the $25,000 to win Silver Dollar Nationals on July 21-23. The Silver Dollar Nationals will be the biggest race in Nebraska Racing History.

Last month at the Spring Meltdown, Brad Looney of Republic, Missouri picked up the win and became the first driver guaranteed a spot in the Silver Dollar Nationals. In 2010, Kelly Boen of Henderson, Colorado won the Alphabet Soup race. In the 2009 version of the Soup Race, after a rain delay, John Anderson of Omaha won one of the most exciting races ever held at I-80 after dueling with Chad Simpson and Kyle Berck.
While mother nature has prevented the CBC from holding a race this year, Chad Simpson of Mt. Vernon, Iowa is the defending series champion. An early season point battle is shaping up in the MLRA between 7-time series champion Al Purkey of Coffeyville, Kansas, Jesse Stovall of Galena, Missouri and Kyle Berck of Marquette, Nebraska. Purkey is also the current NCRA point leader as a result of his win this past weekend at the Sunflower State Showdown.

The A Modifieds will also be race at the Soup Race running IMCA type rules with a 30 lap feature paying $2,000 to win. Many of these drivers will be returning in July for the USMTS portion of the Silver Dollar Nationals. Finally the mighty Hornets will be racing led by 2010 track champion and NASCAR Division IV National Dirt Champion Jamie Spanel. Pit Gates open at 3pm, Grandstands at 4:30 with racing at 5:55. Grandstand Admission is $20 for Adults, Kids (6-15) $5 and Children 5 and Under Free.

On Friday, July 1 the three series (CBC, MLRA and NCRA) will return to I-80 for the Midwest Trifecta and one last tune up before the Silver Dollar Nationals. That race will also see another driver earn an automatic starting spot in the Silver Dollar Nationals.

SLMR Series Kicks off May 8

On Sunday, May 8 the SLMR returns to action at the I-80 Speedway near Greenwood, NE. The series will join the four NASCAR Weekly racing series divisions for a special program for Mothers Day. Racing actions will get underway at 5:55pm. Tickets are $15 for Adults, $5 (Ages 6-15) with children under 5 free.

This will be the second race of the 2011 SLMR season. Lightin’ Leon Zeitner of LaVista won the season opener at the Spring Meltdown on April 1 at I-80 with a last lap pass of Travis Dickes. Following Zeitner and Dickes in SLMR points are Leon’s son Justin, Mike Collins and 2009 series champion Mike Wiarda. Kyle Berck of Marquette is 2010 and defending SLMR champion.

On Saturday, May 14 the series moves to the Junction Motor Speedway near McCool Junction for round 3 of the 2011 SLMR racing season. Racing action starts at 7pm. All SLMR features pay $1,000 to win and $1,050 for second place. Also for the upcoming Silver Dollar Nationals, the two highest drivers in SLMR points that do not qualify for the Silver Dollar Nationals feature through qualifying or last chance races will receive provisionals to start the Silver Dollar Nationals.

The exciting SLMR series, now in its fourth season recently signed the Park Jefferson Speedway in Jefferson, South Dakota for an event on Friday, June 10. Then on Saturday, June 11 the series moves to the Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa.

Rodney Droud to return to action

Two-time Eagle Raceway Sprint Car champ Rodney Droud will return to driving soon, he announced on his Facebook page. Details are forthcoming, including his schedule. It'll be nice seeing a familiar face back in the sprint car scene, when it needs all it can get.

 Update: I got a message from Rodney saying that he wasn't driving a sprint car this season, but will be in Dwarf Car action. 

Bummer. 

I'll admit, he didn't say WHAT he was driving, but I assumed, and you know what they say about the word assume... :-)

Blackbird Bend returns for action in 2011

We have leased the track for the 2011 season. Well known race team owner, Mark Godberson will be the financial backer and be in charge of operation of BBB Speedway. We need input on who will be supporting our racetrack and what classes you want to run. Racing will be run on Fridays. All operations will be run by our group: concessions, beer stands, track preparation and maintenance.

We need workers for all positions. We prefer past or present help from Blackbird, Park Jefferson, Interstate, other area tracks. We also need concession and beer stand managers. The sanction will probably not be available from IMCA until next year because of past experience at the track. Mark said "to make sure everyone knows that payout will be the best in the area." Little Sunset Speedway Gets Facelift

Little Sunset Speedway at Nebraska Raceway Park has had a facelift and it has taken on a whole new look. The track is wider and higher banked and will be home to some exciting racing this year. In addition to the tracks facelift, a number of other changes have been made with a new pit entrance, pit shack and fans entrance.

The 2011 season at Little Sunset will kick off on Sunday, April 3 and again on Sunday, April 10 with go kart races (non-point races). Gates open at Noon with racing at 2pm. Entry fee is $15, Pit Passes $15, Cold Passes $10 and Grandstand Admission $5.

Then on Saturday, April 16 and Sunday, April 17 Little Sunset will be hosting two exciting nights of racing. Mini Sprints, Hornets, Dwarf Cars, Motorcycles, 4 wheelers and B Mods will be racing both nights. Go Karts will also be racing on April 16. Entry Fee is $15, Pit Passes $15 and Grandstand Admission $5. Pits open at 3pm on Saturday with racing at 5pm. On Sunday pits open at Noon with racing at 2pm.

I-80 Spring Thaw April 1-2

The 2011 season at I-80 Speedway starts Friday, April 1 with Modifieds racing for $2000 to win. Late Models, B Mods, Pro Ams and Hornets will join the lineup for a non points weekly show.

Pit Gates open at 4 p.m. and grandstands at 5:30 p.m. Hot laps are at 6:30 p.m., and the first green flag of the season drops at 7:00 p.m.

The second action packed night will feature the stars of the MLRA battling it out for $3000 to win, along with Modifieds racing for $2000 to win, and Hobby Stocks racing for $500 to win. Pit gates open at 3:00 p.m. and grandstands open at 4:30 p.m. Hot laps start at 5:30 p.m., and racing action is underway at 5:55 p.m.

IMCA Announces New Claim Rules

New engine claim procedures for next season aimed at following intent of original IMCA rules


VINTON, Iowa – New guidelines for engine claims made at IMCA sanctioned events in 2011 are designed to follow the intent of rules introduced along with the Modified more than three decades ago.

Drivers will have to purchase a 2011 competitor’s license by April 1, or accept a claim to receive a claim card. No engine claims can be made on the first two track point nights and drivers will not be allowed to claim following the second night if they have not competed at all previous weekly sanctioned events.

Any driver who initiates a legal claim must compete the following week at the same facility or they’ll be issued claim refusal penalties specific to their division.

The exception to that rule is if the next sanctioned event is a special race at which no points are awarded or those specifically identified as such in a release or releases sent by IMCA.

“All these changes have justification. We’ve put a lot of research into this since suspending the existing claim rules during the 2010 season,” explained IMCA Vice President of Operations Brett Root. “It continues to be our belief that most drivers who make engine claims do so under the original intent of the rule, to discourage unnecessary spending on engines and to prevent engine costs from becoming so high they can’t afford to be competitive.”

“When you have drivers who buy licenses in July or August, race twice, claim a motor and then never come back, it’s hard to justify the intent of the rule,” he added.

While taking a hard look at the number of claims made in recent seasons, another driving force behind the revised procedures was the Internet.

“When the first claim rules were established in the late 1970s, things like the Internet and auction sites like eBay didn’t exist. It was more difficult to turn the claim into a revenue source,” Root said. “The claim was never meant as a way and means to buy and sell engines. It was and should be intended to keep costs down and make the sport more affordable for the greatest number of drivers possible.”

Not allowing claims the first two weeks of the point season is intended to eliminate confusion as to who can claim, particularly when the track is newly IMCA sanctioned or ran under a different sanction the previous year.

“Our rules had allowed claims to be made on opening night, by drivers who had finished in the top 20 in points at that track the previous year,” Root said. “Unfortunately, there were several instances where claims were allowed to be made when they should not have been. The new procedures should prevent that from reoccurring.”

Also of note:

•No driver may claim the same driver more than once during the current calendar year.

•Should one or more of the initial top four finishers be disqualified, no driver advanced into the top four can claim or be claimed.

•Drivers making claims must present their claim card; a receipt for a license purchased by April 1 cannot be substituted.

•No claims can be made on season championship night.

•IMCA reserves the right to refuse to issue a claim card, to revoke a claim card or claiming privileges, or deny a claim when deemed necessary to do so.

Dollar amount of cash claims for Modifieds is $1,050, and $550 for Stock Cars, Hobby Stocks, Northern SportMods and Southern SportMods. Those dollar figures go up to $1,550 and $1,050 at designated specials.

Hobby and SportMod drivers both have crate or claim engine options next season.

WRP Sold - Racing Operations to Cease

We just wanted to let you all know of the pending sale of WRP. We have accepted an offer on the property and are expecting to close the sale in mid January. The intention of the buyer is to use the land for purposes other than racing. All of the equipment, bleachers, guardrail, fence, etc will be sold. If you are interested on purchasing any of these items, please give Mike a call.

We were certainly hoping for a buyer interested in keeping the property as a racetrack, but unfortunately this did not happen. Thanks again everyone for your support for 22+ years. There will probably be sold signs placed at the racetrack sometime this week and we wanted you all to hear this information from us. If you have any questions, please let us know.

Good news - with a warning

- Good news Jack Dover is doing well and according to the Facebook page where regular updates have been posted, (viewable whether you have an account or not) he’s cleared to race.

Remember that the issue of whether or not a doctor’s clearance was given was a subject of discussion locally and on message boards across the country after Jack returned to racing one night after suffering head injuries on June 11. They plan on making it to two ASCS Races at Granite City, IL and Little Rock, AR to “start and park” for points. He’s planning to run the Nebraska Cup at Eagle on Sept. 12th.

I’ll just say this and not speak of this again: Eagle dodged a bullet in June when questions remained unanswered, or unwilling to be addressed when the issue of medical clearance came up. But I’m not condemning anyone - it would be hypocritical for me to point an accusing finger when I gladly stayed and watched. If I had enough issue with it I should have left. I didn’t.

Yes, there are plenty of stories told over beer about dirt track heroes racing with banged up heads, broken limbs, and an IV bottle hanging from an iron lung with a motor strapped to it and lapping the field (yes I’m exaggerating).

But that was then.

All that legend means nothing in today’s society when a lawsuit can turn racetracks into lakes, housing developments, or weed-infested patches of unused ground faster than Sammy Swindell’s lap around Eagle.

Hey, while you and I may agree with Shakespeare’s take on attorneys from Henry VI - "Kill all the lawyers!" our opinion isn’t worth squat in the real world. Whether or not anyone signed waivers or the law is on your side, your rights are only as good as your ability to defend them. All too often he with the most lawyer wins and sometimes winning the good fight might as well be a loss because of the heavy cost to defend oneself.

When these decisions are made it no longer affects one person. It can affect the racing community as a whole. In this day of sensationalistic, twenty-four hour media, uninformed opinion and hearsay ruling the air and cyberspace, lawsuits, insurance, and sick opportunism, we need to take the time to ask if maybe it isn’t a good idea to have all the i’s dotted and t’s crossed, for everybody’s sake.

But if that is done, fine - let the critics be damned and on with the show.

Dumpert Receives Fine and Suspension

GREENWOOD, NE (June 16,2010) NASCAR has suspended Cory Dumpert from racing till December 31, 2010. In addition to the NASCAR penalty I-80 Speedway has issued Cory Dumpert a $500 fine and a one year suspension ending June 16, 2011 with one year probation till June 16, 2012. Probation will include any on or off the track incidents occurring at the I-80 Speedway facility.

I-80 Speedway also has issued a $400 fine to Chad Sanders which I-80 will use the fine to increase the Pro Am purse the first week after the fine is paid. Once fine is paid we will pay $400 to Win in the following Pro-Am Feature Race, which Chad Sanders will not be eligible to win the $400.

Eagle Nationals This Weekend for Lucas Oil ASCS

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (June 7, 2010) – Tony Bruce, Jr., raced at Eagle Raceway’s Nebraska Cup last September and liked the racy, high-banked, 1/3-mile clay oval so much that he decided the storied Nebraska track needed its own ASCS National event.

That’s exactly what’s in store for the rabid race fans in Nebraska this coming weekend, as TBJ Promotions brings the Lucas Oil ASCS presented by K&N Filters to Eagle, Nebraska’s Eagle Raceway for the first time ever with this weekend’s Eagle Nationals on Friday and Saturday.

Two full nights of competition, both under the lights of the VERSUS and MavTV cameras for later broadcast, featuring 50 or so of the nation’s top Sprint Car drivers will unfold atop the Eagle clay, with Saturday night’s Eagle Nationals victor taking the $6,000 winner’s share.

Both nights of competition also award points toward the 2010 ASCS Midwest Regional championship as well.

Leading the way into the weekend is 20-year-old Broken Arrow, OK, competitor Brady Bacon, who will try to pull off a feat that has only happened once before in series history; extend a winning streak beyond three races.

After sweeping the Second Annual Steve King Memorial at the Jetmore Motorplex over Memorial Day Weekend for his initial pair of Lucas Oil ASCS National triumphs, Bacon added a third series win in a row this past Saturday night at I-30 Speedway.

Only once in the series 577 National feature events dating back to 1992 has a driver posted four or more consecutive wins, that taking place in 2005 when Gary Wright reeled off five triumphs in a row.

With his three race victory run along with finishes of second and third in another pair of events, Bacon has extended his lead in the series $60,000 point chase to 63 points over 2008 series champion Jason Johnson of Eunice, LA.

Racer/promoter Tony Bruce, Jr., of Liberal, KS, who topped last September’s Nebraska Cup after a spirited duel with Jesse Hockett, is just another ten points back in third, with defending Lucas Oil ASCS champion Shane Stewart of Bixby, OK, and three-time ASCS National champion Tim Crawley of Benton, AR, rounding out the current top five.

The balance of the current top ten in Lucas Oil ASCS National points includes Brodix Rookie of the Year contender Kyle Hirst of Loomis, CA, 20-year-old Jack Dover of Springfield, NE, Danny Wood of Norman, OK, 20-year-old rookie contender Matt Covington of Glenpool, OK, and Zach Chappell of Talala, OK.

The Lucas Oil Sprint Car Series presented by K&N Filters is currently slated for 36 nights of racing action at 18 different tracks throughout the nation, with the country's top Sprint Car drivers set to battle it out for their share of the $250,000 points fund.

In its 19th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing, the American Sprint Car Series brings the best of Sprint Car racing to approximately 100 different tracks throughout 30 states and Canada. Anchored by the Lucas Oil Sprint Car Series presented by K&N Filters, ASCS also consists of ten different Regions throughout the nation.

Beatrice, JMS Cancel Saturday/Sunday Programs

Both tracks announced via dirtdrivers.com that Saturday's races have been canceled due to weather, and neither track will use Sunday as a rain date.

IMCA Modifieds headline October Fest at Beatrice

BEATRICE, Neb. (Oct. 5) – IMCA Modifieds headline the big late-season
show at Beatrice Speedway this Friday and Saturday, Oct. 9-10.

Both October Fest features for the open wheeled division pay $1,500
to win and are qualifying events for the 2010 Fast Shafts All-Star
Invitational ballot.

Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMods and IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks both
run for $400 to win each night. Friday’s Mach-1 Sport Compact feature
will pay $150 to win.

An open practice session for all classes will be held from 6-9 p.m.
on Thursday, Oct. 8.

Gates open at 4 p.m., hot laps are at 5 p.m. and racing starts at 6
p.m. on Friday. Gates open at 3 p.m. on Saturday, with hot laps at
5:30 p.m. and racing at 6:30 p.m.

Pit passes are $25 each day. Grandstand admission is $14 for adults
and $5 for kids $10 and under.

Eagle Bootlegger's Run Oct. 3

The final event of 2009 at "America's Home Track" Eagle Raceway, the Bootleggers Run Race of Champions, will be held on Saturday October 3rd.

The fastest 1/3 mile dirt track in the country will host NASCAR icons Casey Mears, Michael Waltrip, Bobby Labonte and Jimmy Spencer competing in two eight-lap Late Model races.

As a bonus attraction, "The King" Richard Petty will also be in attendance. Mr. Petty does only a handful of appearances each year, so this is very possibly a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see him.

The support classes for the evening will be IMCA Modifieds, Sport Mods and Hobby Stocks. There will be a draw for starting positions.

Reserved seating is available at just $20 for those 6 and up, but will be limited to the first 3962 requests.

General admission seating will be only $15 for those 6 and older.

Tickets can be ordered by calling the office at (402) 238-2595 (a $2 processing fee will apply) or by visiting participating NAPA stores. Prices for "day-of" tickets are $25 for reserved seating and $20 for general admission seating.

Children 5 and under are free with a paid admission (1 child per paid admission).

Autograph vouchers will also be sold for $5 each, but will be limited to 1200 total autographs and will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Purchaser will be guaranteed one of five driver autographs per voucher using a lottery based system. The autograph session will run from 5:30 to 6:30 (rain or shine).

Pit gates open at 2:30. Pit passes are just $20.

The front gates will open at 3:00. There will be live music from 3:00 until 5:00.

A press conference will be held from 4:30 until 5:30 (rain or shine).

Hot laps for the IMCA Modifieds, Sport Mods and Hobby Stocks will begin at 5:30 with heat races for those classes starting at 6:30.

Hot laps for the Race of Champions will be at 6:55 and the feature races start at 7:00. Post race interviews, photos and etc. will be done immediately following them.

Feature races for the IMCA Modifieds, Sport Mods and Hobby stocks are scheduled to take the green flag at 7:15.

Drivers and times are subject to change due to NASCAR scheduling or flight delays.

Evening rain forced the postponement of Friday's 9/11 Race to Remember featuring ASCS Sprints, Topless Modifieds and Sport Compacts. The race has been rescheduled for Sunday Sept. 13, with racing starting at 5:00PM.
